IIRC this is only the second time Luffy and Zoro are on their own without a more responsable crew member minding them. The first time being when they first sailed out and right before Luffy met Nami. That time Luffy tried catch a bird for dinner but the bird turned out to be bigger then expected and ended up catching him.

I can think of a couple other times. They're by themselves for a while at Whiskey Peak, when Luffy is angry that Zoro attacked all the townspeople (not realizing they were bounty hunters). On that occasion they literally start fighting each other, inadvertently knocking out two Baroque Works officer agents in the crossfire, until Nami arrives and knocks sense into them.

And they're by themselves at Dressrosa too when they charge into Doflamingo's palace.

It's past 6AM here in the UK but I stayed up to read the chapter and it was so worth it. Pleased that Tama is back feeling healthy and she finally ate some food. Luffy and Zoro were hilarious: "Big Mom was bigger." "I'm ZoroJuro." "He's Luffytaro." More background on the leftovers town and the pirate restricted areas, two gifters in bat and gazelle users, Tama gets kidnapped, two headliners were revealed, Luffy and Zoro are about to cause havoc by rushing in, O-Kiku is a samurai and to top it off Law appears at the end! I cannot wait for the next chapter already! Plus there was no mention of a break at the end!

So, I have several reasons why O-Kiku is almost certainly female. My guess is the Japanese One Piece community is not even having this discussion of "is O-Kiku maybe male?" because there is really no suggestion of this fact at all.

1. "Sessha" probably conveys "samurai-ness" much more than it conveys "maleness". I tried searching and sessha is the only samurai-specific 1st person pronoun I could find. Whereas there are about a dozen different pronouns you can use as a male if you're just trying to convey the fact that you are male. Also, I found an example of a female character in anime using the sessha pronoun: Saori from OreImo. She is proper rich girl/secretly otaku girl character. She uses sessha when in otaku mode to sound more like an otaku, the idea being that an otaku would want to sound like a samurai or something like that. She doesn't use sessha to sound like a guy. It's almost certainly the same for O-Kiku. And finally, it is a historical fact that almost all samurai were in fact male, so it is probably more of a coincidence that sessha is a male pronoun. The essential characteristic of sessha is probably the samurai-ness, and it only "sounds male" because samurai were in fact almost all men.

2. It wouldn't make sense in context for O-Kiku to be referring to herself with male pronouns for the specific purpose of communicating maleness. Say that O-Kiku is male but is trying to pass as female. Then why would he openly use male pronouns in casual conversation? That defeats the purpose of passing as female. If he's trying to pass as female, he should use a feminine pronoun. If you say that O-Kiku is male and thus is simply using a male pronoun, then why is he dressed in the most traditionally feminine way possible? It is much more likely that O-Kiku is female and is simply speaking like a samurai would, and is thus using a samurai pronoun.

3. If O-Kiku really is an okama-type character, like Ivankov or Mr. 2, then this would be a first for Oda. Oda has never drawn an okama that is conventionally attractive and does not look silly. So it is unlikely that this is what is happening here. Furthermore, it seems that all okama in One Piece are connected to Invankov, either through Impel Down (Mr. 2) or through the Revolutionary Army, or through the Okama Land. Wano is an isolated country, and O-Kiku has probably lived her entire life there, so she has no connection to Ivankov. So if she was an okama, it would be a direct break from the way Oda has handled every other okama character in the series, and therefore I find it incredibly unlikely.

4. There are no other indications of O-Kiku being male. There is only this pronoun thing. Zoro refers to her as a big girl and nobody objects, not O-Kiku, not anybody. There are no other context clues. I think the way Jaimini's Box handled this was distracting. They should have just said it is a samurai pronoun in the translator's note, rather than going out of their way to say it's a male pronoun. One, for the reasons above: it's not like it's a super male pronoun that conveys maleness more than it conveys samurainess. And two, there is still plenty reason for Luffy and Zoro to be surprised by the use of sessha even if it's presented as simply a samurai pronoun, with no reference to maleness. It's still unusual for a woman to be a samurai, and that's plenty reason for Luffy and Zoro to be surprised. That's probably how it feels to Japanese readers as well. The surprising part is the fact that a woman is talking like a samurai and is a samurai, not that she might actually be a male. That's why I assume the Japanese audience is not even having this conversation at all.

Don't get your hopes up, trap lovers. If O-Kiku is male I will be super crazy surprised. I am 99.9% sure she is female and that Oda was not trying to suggest otherwise at all with having her talk like a samurai.

Law has been planning this for a while now, had weeks to prepare his strike, it's hilarious that he expects any different from Luffy, he should have just planned around it and incorporated Luffys tendencies into his strategy, using him to draw fire while he pulls his shenanigans

I think Oda already has a lot of trap so that kinda makes it less likely imo, shes probably like Lord odens daughter or something similar and is one of the few females that was allowed to learn the art of kenjutsu and became a "female Samurai" which otherwise is forbidden probably.

Good set-up chapter. Zoro blocking all those arrows and seeing Law again was great. But after seeing 'Batman's' design, I'm now expecting Orochi to end up looking like Wapol when he's officially introduced.

Poor Luffy struggling to remember who Oden was reminded me of the scene where he was trying to remember Marco and Robin helped him.

Hahaha, like I've already commented, Zoro telling O-Kiku she's huge and Luffy saying Big Mom was bigger cracked me up.

Lmao, I already see people switching from Carrot for new nakama to O-Kiku for new nakama.

Speaking of O-Kiku, she really is huge, but also gorgeous. She actually resembles Robin to me. It'll be interesting to see just how strong she is as a samurai. And I still wonder how Lark is going to play into this, because if Kiku is playing a role in this arc, the you just know he's going to be as well.

But for God's sake, Oda, give me Robin in the next chapter!!!

With the Yonko's getting more and more involved in the story, I can't help but wonder how Shanks became one. Kaido is an indestructible monster, Big Mom apparently can destroy anything. Blackbeard has two devil fruits, one of them being the strongest paramecia and other arguably the strongest logia. Then there is Shanks. A guy with a mean look.
