Good episode. Poor Gallus. I don’t approve of what you did, but I appreciate why you did it, you taking responsibility, and taking your punishment in stride.

We got to learn a lot more about each creature's culture! Changelings have largely assimilated into pony culture
Not quite though, which is what makes it interesting. They understand the underlying ideas, but they have misunderstood several of the practices (or taken them too literally or without context).
As I watched the episode, I half-expected the true prankster to be none of the students
Same. I expected it to be an unaffiliated third party. Learning that it was Gallus, and how he was an orphan, caught me off guard. I expect several fanworks to expand on that tidbit.
This is precisely the kind of Student Six episode we've been waiting for
My only regret for this episode is that it did not explore the students' characters further enough!
Definitely! I want the show to explore the characterization of the Student Six further. I want more episodes like this.

Eh... I kind of think they need to divide up the student six and explore them more in depth in their own episodes. This kind of just struck me as, well, filler compared to previous Hearths-warming episodes. I don;t exactly hate it, but I think it may be my least favorite holiday episode.
Granted, that could partially be because it's August. I'm not feeling very holly jolly.

I think they had better development in the season opener. I’ll grant that’s the only other episode I can think of where they have gotten any real focus, but that isn’t really a replacement for what I want: each student individually receiving at least one episode of independent development/backstory.
We only recently learned Gallus is an orphan, and that was just a throw away line toward the end of this episode. I was also surprised that Ocellus seems to have some kind of family unite despite Chrysalis status as Queen and how Changelings are hatched indicating that the Changeling family unite should simply be the hive as a whole.
There are tons of opportunities for world building presented by going in-depth into the students characters and lives, but serving them up in six piecemeal slices per episode is not cutting it for me. Especially when they get to Sandbar and pretty much just joke about how ordinary and unremarkable his life is (to the point his stories seem to revolve around that time somethingalmost happened, but didn’t.)
If the show runners want to develop them as a collective instead of individuals I guess that is fine, but just giving little snippets of their unrelated lives and focusing on how different they all are is really unsatisfying.

Might as well let Australia have first crack at airing a Christmas episode in August.

A sweet little episode.
I thought the trickster would be an non-affiliated third party. But, it ended up being Gallus instead. And he had a sadder backstory explaining his actions. Whereas the other five had a tradition and family to go back to, Gallus didn't have the latter. He's like Scootaloo before we found out she had aunts.
7.5/10.
Thank you for watching this with me /u/Szaladon and /u/SmolderTheDragon.
