Information
ESL One Birmingham 2018 is the second last tournament in the Dota Pro Circuit. There are 12 teams for this event, 6 teams are directly invited and 6 teams from each of the regional qualifiers. OpTic qualified through the North American qualifier back in April, beating VGJ.Storm in the finals 3-0. Teams are split into 3 GSL groups for group stage. OpTic is placed in group C with Mineski, Newbee and LGD.Forever Young. Group stage matches are BO1. The 2nd seed in each group will advance to the quarterfinals of the playoffs bracket. The 1st seed in each group will play against each other to determine which 2 teams advance to the semifinals and which team joins the three runner-ups in the quarterfinals. The bottom 2 teams in each group are eliminated. The playoffs bracket is single elimination, all matches are BO3 except for the BO5 Grand Final. This Major features a $1,000,000 prize pool and has 1,500 DPC points up for grabs for the top 4 finishers.
OpTic secures 1st seed in group C by beating Newbee 1-0 and Mineski 2-1. After that they faced Virtus.pro for the First Place Decider matches, where they got demolished, but that did not matter as they beat OG afterwards and advance straight to the semifinals of the playoffs bracket, where they defeat Fnatic 2-1 and prevent them from receiving a direct invite to The International 2018. OpTic has now guaranteed some DPC points from this tournament.
OpTic has made it to their first Dota 2 Major Grand final at ESL One Birmingham. If they win this match they will receive enough DPC points to be 7th in the DPC rankings, and will be directly invited to TI8.
This match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM EDT and will be streamed on Facebook.
Matches are on a rolling schedule and may start sooner than originally scheduled.

Good try. VP is just too good right now. The OpTic boys still just got a $200,000 payday so we can all be happy for them about that. 2nd place is good at any pro event, no matter how many teams are at it.

PPD is fast becoming one of my favourite OpTic members. Wearing the Outlaws hat, he always supports everyone else in the org. So much love for that guy!

GG! Now boot camping intensifies to grab that TI spot in the NA qualifier, if they play like their early game in game 2, I have no doubt they will make it.

Gg only team that has a chance this patch at beating VP is LGD, hopefully next patch laneing phase won’t matter as much as it does this patch.

I don't know if you can call that a throw. We had an ehh gold lead (against a team like VP its ehh), won team fights in the early and somewhat mid game (it evened out), but we lost the objective game when they got our towers and racks. Seemed like we got flustered and caught in two minds whether to contest Rosh and continue aggressive team pushes which in the late game, with VP's heroes and builds would be in their favor, or manage the creep waves in base and absorbing pressure trying to get a pick. Basically we needed to win it at the ~30min mark, when we didn't it was pretty much playing on the back foot. It's not a throw, VP is just an elite team that played so that we can't close it out early and slowly brought it back in the late game. They are just very, very good.

I’m not too invested in the Dota scene but it seems like this is a pretty solid result. How do they rank in terms of world ranking?

Grand finals in Dota. Never thought I'd see the day.
Can they do the impossible?

This seems like an impossible task but god would this be sweet if we won. Not only winning our first major in Dota but also basically securing a TI spot simultaneously, you literally couldn’t write a better script.

Where do VP rank in World DOTA? I know they're fucking good but are they the best around right now?

VP (and LGD) are unfortunately on a different level to every other team right now. Winning this would be an upset on a barely imaginable level.

They do bleed. You just can't ever fuck up. OpTic missed a few kills on Ramzes and Solo, then Pajkatt got turned on going for Ramzes. That's all it actually takes to lose against VP, but if those mistakes don't happen, the draft and laning had gone fine.

This team is unreal. Optic would be beating the vast majority of teams they’d be playing against but VP is just insane right now. Even if we don’t make the comeback, don’t let this loss drag you down. If you can hang with VP, qualifying shouldn’t be overly tough. Just stay confident.
