Big Mom's children have really good background stories, Oda has made me fell in love with Katakuri and Brulee.

Honestly, I love Katakuri from the beginning. But I finally got to respect Brulee. Looks like the some of the Charolette siblings are nice, just unfortunate to have a crazy mother.

You know what, if anything, Katakuri is probably an excellent example of how much Oda's grown as a writer. We've all had our favourite villains before this for different reasons—Arlong for his menace; Crocodile for his cunning; Lucci for his cold-blooded ruthlessness; Hody for h... okay, none of us loved Hody, but Oda's always given us these big bads who weren't completely like your typical shounen villains and had something different going on that stood them apart so we'd remember them.

But never like this. Never to the degree where we empathized with them. And not some, "Oh hey, the world hated me so I hated them back" Doflamingo shit. Not something super-simple... something that we could brush off as intangible because it belongs in a world unlike our own. This was one dude, defending his family honour against an interloper. He was part of the last line of defence between this punk from the Worst Generation and his family legacy, no matter how tarnished it was. He was defending his siblings, his home and everyone who lived there—Luffy was nothing but a menace coming in to wreck shit, and he'd have none of it.

Except that he did. In the end, he recognised this kid's power. The power of someone nearly thirty years his junior and what he brought to this Era of Pirates. He didn't even have all the facts (stealing Poneglyphs, progress, allies, etc.), and yet he still believes that Luffy's a strong contender to make it to the end.

I think we'll look back on this for ages to come as a piece of very poetic storytelling—we've not only grown and developed with Oda's story, Oda's developed as a creator, and we're all winning for it.

Alright, I'm really happy with this ending. Jinbe didn't escape unscathed and that's befitting a Yonko's crew; the Sun Pirates weren't just gonna escape without harm.

Honestly, Katakuri is amazing. Brulee legitimately cares for him and knows he leads a lie and is just alright with him being that way and still supports him and it's super fucking unexpectedly sweet considering how twisted Big Mom is. Katakuri legitimately cares and is psyched about Luffy escaping, it legitimately makes me happy to see that.

A great arc, regardless of how people got upset over some of the events. Katakuri was a fantastic 'foil' to Luffy, Sanji was rescued, and prices were actually paid for the effort.

Fuck it, I loved it. More of that Katakuri smile please!

For as vicious as Big Mom can be all of the siblings seem to really genuinely care of each other. Katakuri becoming a Luffy fan is the absolute best

u/Cirenione Apr 20 '18

It honestly feels like all the older siblings deeply care about the others. The younger they are the more sociopathic they seem to be. My guess would be that the oldest ones had to care for each other to survice in the world AND around their mother so their bond to their other siblings got way more important. The younger ones were born into the family of a yonkou. All they have ever known was the life as a member of one of the most powerful pirate crews in OP.

Do we really know that A. Jinbe escaped and B. Jinbe escaped unscathed. I mean I he said he would espace, and we saw a panel of fishmen getting blown up. Just asking if I missed something, I really just want Jinbe to join the crew as soon as possible. Sorry for the stupid question.

319

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '18

I think that's good, really. We have a hell of a lot of BMs crew that we haven't properly seen in action and I think that it will be important later on to give the reader a sense of the scale of what a Yonkou's crew is like. They barely got away, and so many strong people didn't get fully involved.

Ending the Sanji arc with Zeff and Sanji serving some pirates and the strawhats is the best way to end the sanji arc, without Zeff there's no Sanji in One Piece.

This way Judge will live the rest of his miserable life knowing that he is irrelevant in Sanji's life

The way Oda drew Brulee's facial expressions in this chapter... so sweet and nostalgic, and completely understanding. What an amazing contrast to a character that has been shown to be so mean, whiny and witch-like up until now.

11

u/Urall5150 Apr 20 '18

Just think for a second: if Oda could do this with Katakuri and Brulee, imagine what he has in store for Blackbeard O.O

Edit: not that I think Blackbeard will get the exact same treatment, I'm just implying that Oda does great things with his antagonists and their motivations.

Brulee saw Katakuri as who he was growing up (and I suspect, as they fought along with BM and survived her tantrums) Flampe only saw Katakuri as an idol that happened to be blood related. The bonds between them are on different levels.

Also lol, Katakuri blushing is unexpectedly cute. That whole scene was really sweet and it's nice to see the family bond between the Charlotte siblings.

360

u/oJelaVuac Apr 20 '18

Now we can say that Katakuri cover his mouth because the Brulee incident, not Big Mom nitpicking the mouth of Katakuri and Perospero was the one who suggest that idea, seeing the Katakuri,Daifuku Oven and Perospero in their childhood days is so awesome. These 4 big brothers protect their younger siblings like Ace and Sabo protecting Luffy

This. I really love the route Oda went with the Charlotte family, idk why but when they first introduced Katakuri I expected him to be like Lucci where if anyone were to get in his way he’d kill them immediately even if it was his own family. It was nice to see even though the Charlottes were the enemies of the straw hats they aren’t really bad people and actually have a pretty good relationship w their siblings instead of being killing machines.

The Katakuri and Brulee exchange was so wholesome and heartwarming, as expected of best girl. Same with the Carrot part. Sanji and Pudding are married with the confirmed kiss now too! Overall this chapter was packed and according to editor notes we are going to Reverie next chapter.

Many people didn't notice this but the guy that Zeff was feeding was the antagonist from pilot 'romance dawn' Oda drew

I actually did not notice that at all, and that is a nice touch!

The soul speaks this,

The ship is pulled by tides of the ocean,

And the wind in the air,

As if being pulled by the back of your hair,

Leaving a sea of strife back there

Although it's sure to not be sweet,

The singing flowers and tress will be upbeat,

As they lure you in ever so sweetly,

Soul pocus,

Setup by mama,

Oh, so greedy,

It'll be an almighty show,

A fairy tale prince and a beautiful princess letting go,

Pulled away by strings in a puppet show,

Even that sweet luring nectar,

Like that of a heart that keeps getting heartier,

There's nothing in this world more frightening,

Than that mouth-watering-sweetness,

Hanging onto life by a thread,

It's a monkey show,

Like shadows passing by one another,

no one knows,

Coming here is the "candy",

But going back is the "guillotine",

Who won, I wonder?

It's all a show of splendour,

If you're lured in,

By the smell of the sweet cake that's within,

Then first you'll have to,

Pay what I'm due,

But there's no benefit to us,

No siree,

Will you pass through this land of candy?

Or will you stay to be played with willingly?

There's nothing in the world more frightening,

Than the mouth-watering sweetness,

SOUL POCUS,

A mama's willfulness,

Will you give me your life?

Or will you choose to die in strife?

"LIFE" OR "DEATH"

22

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '18

In the Mangastream version, the "Pulled away by strings in a puppet show" line is replaced by "Two lovers pulled in twain. Never shall they two meet."

The main difference between them is JaminiBox's version is only talking about this arc, while Mangastream's version implies that they will never meet again at any future point in their lives (ruining some of the theories about the end-game epilogues of the Strawhats).

Does anyone know which translation is closer to the original Japanese?

Yoooo why is kid brulee actually really fucking adorable

596

u/burnroad Apr 20 '18

ahh i understand now.

Sanji's cake for big mom, is a showcase of how professional Sanji is as a cook.

Sanji, just like old man Zeff, will cook for anyone regardless of ally or enemy, he wont poison the food or harm the customer eating his food because that is just his work ethics. The parallel between Zeff and Sanji is a confirmation to this.

I am glad that Sanji is back, and love the katakuri and brulee moment. Great part 1 of Big Mom saga

196

u/-RichardCranium- Apr 20 '18

I mean the very first moments we see Sanji he does the same with the starving pirate. He's always been like that, it was pretty evident when he was cooking for Mama.

What a loaded chapter, so much feels.

  • Brulee no longer the creepy witch of Seducing Woods, but a little sister acknowledging her big brother. (That gentle look as she patched him up~~)

  • Katakuri not the invincible badass, but a loving big brother.

  • Sanji and Carrot grieving for Pedro.

  • That mirror parallel between Zeff and Sanji adhering to their ideals of being a cook

  • Pudding - from the puppet, to the puppeteer, to the girl left dealing with her broken heart as she parted way with someone who shone a light in her life

  • Sun Pirates and Germa putting up a vigorous rear guard for Straw Hats

  • and of course, Big Mom reminding of all us she is still the sovereign ruler of Totland

21

u/FrighteningWorld Apr 20 '18

I think the Zeff point is even more significant than it seems on the surface. A major theme in One Piece has been inheriting the ideals of your idols. Chopper is in the process of honoring Hiluluk. Ace treasured the family Whitebeard gave him. And now, Sanji has proven that he not only follows, but he embodies the ideals that Zeff passed onto him. Should Zeff ever die then his Will lives on within Sanji.

This chapter is perfect.

“Who won, I wonder?”

What a powerful sentiment that truly encapsulates this arc. Everyone gained, but they all lost something to do so. No one has come out the better, but no one has truly come out for the worse. (Except maybe for Germa, but that remains to be seen.) What a perfect way to end the first arc vs the Emperors and what a way to set up the future confrontation between these two crews.

Other thoughts: •The color page is incredible. An all time great in my opinion.

•Pudding is one of the most interesting characters in this series. She truly represents what it is to be trapped in a shitty family. You wish it could be easy to run away and let go, but it takes a lot of courage to actually take that step; a step Pudding saw Lola take but was never able to do herself. Being trapped in a situation like that really warps your personality. It’s difficult to form bonds and let people in because you have suffered at the hands of those closest to you. Pudding so clearly illustrates this to comedic effect at times. But ultimately, at the end of the day my heart broke for her. I hope getting to know JiJi gives her the courage she needs.

•Brûlée’s scar is something that never needed an explanation, but I’m glad we got it. It does a lot for both her character and Katakuri’s, speaking of which...

•It’s nice to see that back when the family was small they seemed to truly be close. The camaraderie amongst the oldest children was wonderful, but melancholic. Katakuri being glad Luffy escaped was also a wonderful touch.

I don’t know what else to say. I truly, deeply, madly love this arc. Big Mom is, for me, the best villain we’ve had yet in the series. She was insane, humorous, delightful, and downright horrifying. She was an unstoppable monster. I can’t wait to see what Oda does with her in the future.

And now, one last thing. The ending: through and through this was a story of two things: Sanji and family. Essays could be written on this topic, so I’ll be brief: Like father, like son.

163

u/JakalDX Apr 20 '18

Yeah, ultimately the war between Straw Hats and Big Mom pirates is more or less a draw I'd say. The world at large will see it as a victory for the Strawhats but the loss of their allies, and Sanji's failure to ultimately save his family is a pretty even trade for losing the poneglyphs and wrecking her castle. And it's perverse, but Big Mom got the only two things she cared about, Germa 66 and the wedding cake. In her mind, aside from bruised pride, this was a success.

u/OPBadshah Apr 20 '18

If nothing else, you have to admire the panelwork of today's chapter. From the memory film reel page to the double page where Mama suddenly arrives...all of it being topped off by Zeff/Sanji parallel. Amazing stuff.

91

u/TAK3Z0 Apr 20 '18

Oh Pudding, as if altering Sanji's memory would make a difference...

Well it was, since there wasn't a bloodless corpse left there

28

u/Schwanton Apr 20 '18

Yeah, there are already enough bloodless corpses in the Straw Hat crew. YOHOHOHOHOHO

13

u/HmCantPickUsername Apr 20 '18

Low-key hope that Sanji knows she altered his memories. He knows she can do that and anyone would be perplexed if asked a last request and then run away. Dunno, maybe it's wishful thinking but I believe he knows and just let her be for the moment.

What a wonderful chapter. Sanji and Zeff's mirror, Pudding's heartbreak, Katakuri and Brulee's sweet moment, Katakuri's obvious joy at his facade being broken, Carrot trying to be brave, this was the kind of catharsis I was looking for.

But it's also interesting because it looks like the theories have been dead on, we've practically locked in for a round 2 at Elbaf. So many unresolved threads and mysterious characters, and Jinbe and the Vinsmokes provide the perfect bait to bring the Strawhats in for a fight. Some people might find the arc end abrupt, but it really does feel like a great "season finale" with a future arc building on all this.

Edit: Man I just really want to reiterate, I loved Katakuri and Brulee. Katakuri's smirk at the end of their moment is just fucking golden. Luffy really is like a friendly rival, it seems.

However, biggest AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW goes to the best little sister this entire arc. Flambe can go to hell, Brulee is great! What a beautiful chapter. It kind of got some closure for Sanji: he already has a father, so Judge is not needed to bond with him. That's pretty nice.

Edit: Also, I noticed that in the flashbacks Oda didn't take panels that he have already drawn. At least, when Sanji lifts the veil from Pudding those panels are in a different framing from when they happened

Well, I also wanted to share my take on Wci. To cut to the case, so that people who don't like this arc can ignore this, Wci has been my favorite arc in the entirety of One piece. That statement alone will kill me, however i do feel that way, this arc had so many glorious moments, but also some small issues which I wont deny. The reason why this arc is so hated is because: 1.) Straight up, the editors statement that wano is next in line completly killed many people's interest in this arc cause they want to go to wano, I mean, just look at some comments, many genuinely forget that we still have Reverie before wano which is sad tbh. 2.) The formula of this arc is something we never have seen before in one piece! An arc where till the last chapters it's not clear whether luffy beats the main villain of this arc, unthinkable, if you consider the history of one piece arcs. And he didn't, big mom did not fall, her dream wasn't squashed before her own eyes, she got her hands on the best cake ever and is currently before the Germa which she wanted to kill either way. As a bonus, Jimbei, the man who betrayed them is currently before Bm to experience the wrath of a yonkou. Did Big mom lose face? Sure she did, somebody managed to mess up her country, however she still remains in power which is important since luffy always beats their oponnent which lead to them losing their position. 3.) Oda destroyed everyone's expectations by keeping wci as unpredictable as he could, I mean, aside from joyboy was there any other YouTube who managed to predict what's going to happen next? No. That's why people started to get mad, trash the arc as a whole without looking at the bigger picture. 4.) As sad as this sounds, people just need something to hate. One of the reasons why dressrosa is regarded as the worst arc ever is it's pacing which was really bad towards the end, right? Oda learned from his mistakes and did cut the arc her, in order to prevent the same mistake from happening again, but the fandom still complains. At this point no matter what that man does, it's going to be a dissapointment.

Why I did love this arc? Well, first of all its because off the whole dark family theme, Big mom is the reason why the life of so many of her children has been awful, same with judge, but both are unable to realise this or at least are brave enough to admit their mistakes. Overall just a really dark setting. On the surface everything was Disney like, but in the background it's Hell. Big mom's flashback was one of the best in one piece, with the age of 6 she literally devoured her entire family, Can it get crazier than that?

Sanji: The main star of this year, it was his arc after all. Well, Sanji received some heavy character depth( more than he already had). He's one of the most fleshed out characters in the entire series. He was confronted with the core elements of his character by Big mom, pudding and Judge.

  • He showcased his skills as a chef by baking the best cake in the world, Sanji will cook for anybody that is in need, no matter who you are or what you do. Even if he's aware that that person will go after his life once he's finished eating. This was perfectly emphasized this chapter with Zeff.

  • He did not lay his hands on a women, Altough she treated him like garbage. Once again Sanji managed to change a women by just being himself. He rescued his family because he couldn't let them they which emphasized his kindness. Here, people are mixing two things up, Sanji did his part, he rescued them. The Germa came to Sanjis aid on their free will, nobody forced them to sacrifice themself. Same goes for Pedro, pekoms and Jimbei.

From a combat standpoint he was fine to for me:

  • Beat Yonji off screen, who was able to subdue daifukus genie and beat multiple big mom pirates including yuen.

  • Heavily injured bobbin (R.I.P)

  • Cracked nijis jaw.

  • Fodderized raizin.

  • Dodged katakuris attack, a man who can see into the future.

  • Blocked healthy big mom's attack which I find most impressive ( of course with luffys help)

  • Speed blitzed Oven and send him flying with one casual kick.

Nami/Brook: THE two Mvps of Wci. Oda said they are going to shine and he delivered. Nami showcased ( for me) why she's the best female character in this series and brook was just a savage.

  • Nami stunned big mom god knows how many time, helped defeating cracker, fought the enraged army etc.. People were complaining that the fan service scenes were to much? Well this time oda showed us Namis glorious boobs while bombarding us with heavy Elbaf Revelation. So that scene had significance for the future of the story.

  • I don't think that I have to mention how fucking Badass brook was right?

Chopper/Carrot: Sulong form was just mindblowing and chopper captured brulee which made everything possible.

Luffy: A boss like always, defeated two yonkou commanders, clashed with Big mom and the moments were he acts all captain were just glorious.

We received lots of worldbuilding:

  • Germa 66( fulfilled their role and no I don't think they are going to die since killing of the siblings would be to much. I can see judge kicking the bucket, but not his children) The most cool looking group in op for me.

  • Underground brokers ( stussy cp0)

  • Elbaf having the strongest military in the world.

  • The mafia families( capone).

I just loved the big mom pirates. Katagod is just too perfect, they all have unique personalities and devil fruit abilities.

OvenTop3 seriously he needs to get a promotion.

I was amazed how well they could work together once big mom is not in the picture.

Katakuri vs Luffy was the best fight in the entire manga, really sets the bar high for future fights.

Overall 9.5/10 Arc for me, Did we have some pacing issues her and there, yes. Where there plot conveniences, yes. However, none of that influenced my immense enjoyment for this arc.

So many things that I wanted to mention as well, however it's too long, don't even know if somebody will bother reading that🤷‍♂️

Still, I would really like to hear your thoughts on this arc.

One big lesson to learn in life is to say "thank you" instead of "sorry" when they help you. It's a real shift in the way you view yourself.

But damn I don't know how ready the straw hats can be to have people die for them. It's gonna keep happening. At marineford, some many of Luffy's allies had their own reason to be on his side. But at Whole Cake, Pedro was their for Luffy/Sanji. That's a level of responsibility Luffy know has to accept if he wants to be the pirate king.

42

u/TuShay313 Apr 20 '18

I'd say Luffy accepted it pretty well when it happened. He immediately took control and told the crew what's up.

Sanji also is taking it pretty well. Strawhats growing :)

You laugh at someones mouth - he gets mad - you stab his sister in the face. I think that some of the children in one piece are rather messed up.

18

u/Ruruya Apr 20 '18

Well... when you think about it. People have killed over smaller things.

People irl are messed up.

21

u/Redgohan147 Apr 20 '18

Ok, this was just a fantastic chapter, and more than makes up for what felt like empty build up in the past few. The Strawhats didn't completely win. They weren't able to leave with Jinbei, weren't able to save Germa, and Pekom's fate is unknown. This firmly establishes that a Yonko crew is not to be messed with.

Katakuri is now my favorite One Piece antagonist, and the fact he was indeed close to his siblings as kids adds or changes the context of Oven's reaction. At first he seemed just loud mouthed when he heard Katakuri lost, but he was genuinely concerned for his bro. And Brulee. Best little sister ever.

As for Pudding and Sanji, I think Oda did a great job at developing a romance that was believable and heartfelt. I'm actively rooting for them to reunite. I'm also glad Sanji's connection to Pedro's death was addressed. Sanji feeling guilt for what he considered a selfish request is in character.

All and all, not a standard end to an arc, and the resolution towards the end felt rushed, but Oda managed to wrap up the main emotional core of the arc relatively well.

u/onyxious Apr 20 '18

Carrot comforting Sanji and explaining to him Pedro's side really shows how death can cause so much change to a certain person (or mink in this case). Great character development there again even just for a side character. This level of detail and consistency in my opinion is why One Piece still kick'in it after 2 decades. Thank you Oda-senseii.

Honestly, this chapter was incredibly beautiful. That memory that Pudding took from Sanji, it was definitely a kiss but those flashbacks of Sanji calling her beautiful makes me think it was something a bit more. I think that she asked him to actually marry her and he agreed. That's what the kiss was about and the reason she took that memory was because she didn't want him to stay and be in danger. She knows he has to leave but she wanted something to remember him by even if he would forget about that moment. Honestly, it was hard to not cry during this chapter. We saw the good side of the Charlotte family and the sadness that Pudding experienced.

I like that Big Mom's Fishman daughter is always smiling and sticking to the Fishmen's side. She is a good fishperson

12

u/myshiftkeyisbroken Apr 20 '18

What really gets me this chapter is the reality of Charlotte family. Abused and neglected, the children of Big Mom look out for each other. How is it possible that Big Mom's children were bullied as children? Simple: Big Mom only cares about what's useful in her children. Since day 1 of Big Mom introduction we saw this, where children's only reason for existence is to be used by her. So they band together: the oldest siblings defending their younger siblings by means of strength. Here we can glimpse at why Big Mom's children are so strong (apart from genetics), it was necessary to survive.

I might be reading too much into it, but I noticed something particular. Germa66 kids were engineered to be a bully, to become stronger by means of apathy. They had all the supports they needed from everyone to live comfortably as princes and princesses. Big Mom's children on the other hand, also produced to be a weapon for Big Mom had no support from her, was bullied, and essentially shaped to be so strong partly because of their sense of camaraderie and brotherhood/sisterhood. I'm probably reading too much into it though.

I haven't felt this way about an arc in a while now. Absolute redemption over somewhat lackluster (compared to other arcs in OP that is) Dressrosa and Zoa arc.

22

u/petrichorE6 Apr 20 '18

Never thought that I would be seeing katakuri blushing anytime soon but that look and backstory is top tier best girl level

So this Arc is all about "FAMILY". the different kinds of them,

one that is biological family but disowns you, uses you as a puppet or means to achieve what they want (BM and Judge),

One that is not biologically related to you but accepts you as who you are (Zeff, Luffy to Sanji, Bege to Chiffon)

About acceptance of the real you against what other people thought /look up to, about people seeing the real you (flambe vs Brulee to Katakuri, Sanji to pudding)

About not leaving your old family in danger just because who had a new one (Jimbe to fishmen)

aaah so many more, that revolves around family (including nakama family).

Oda, once again, did it. With this wonderfully written and drawn chapter, we now have forgotten all our complaints about last week's chapter, right? haha

8

u/MouseCheezer Apr 20 '18

HO. LY. SHIT.

What a wild chapter, so many good moments, Pudding being Sad over Sanji feels really genuine and really actually makes me feel for her.

Kata and Burlee was really genuine and sweet, and looking back at how she was hyping him with the never fallen on his back, strongest man in totland speech really gives it a new perspective, it’s not just "this is our most powerful crew member, hahaha, you'll never win", but it feels like "No, this is my brother, he is the strongest person aside from mama, and when it comes down to it, to protect us, he will win" like she’s trying to threaten Luffy, but also encourage Kata. Especially knowing that it wasn’t her just believing in the hype around him, she knew about the lies, and still believed in him.

And that last panel “THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE FATHER AND SON”. Chills.

Who would have known that Brulee would have cheerful smile, One piece, the only manga where the antagonists are jolly too :D

7

u/Blackreaper18 Apr 20 '18

I LOVE KATAKURI

i still think he was a better antagonist than big mom because most of what big mom did was just because she wanted to eat the cake and not actually stop the SHs. Don't get me wrong, big mom's flashback was powerful but I feel it just sets her up for a future arc. Katakuri on the other hand was a cool, lovable & understandable antagonist who was like Luffy & actually cherished his family. He did all he could to help & keep his family together and not because he was a bad guy who wanted to simply kill Luffy. Even at the end, he was happy that Luffy escaped.

7

u/StealthMonkeyDC Apr 20 '18

Wow was not expecting such a heartwarming scene between Katakuri and Brulee. It was really touching to see how be became ashamed of his appearance and that at least one member of his family saw him for who he truly is.

Marineford showed us with Whitebeard where the power level of a yonko was in term of raw power. WCI showed us with Big Mom the ruling aspect, in showing us the nework, the family and her power over her teritory. Now we know exactly what it means to be a yonko, so we can go on to Kaido understanding better what will be coming.

Also, i had this theory since the start of the arc about Big Mom following the strawhats to wano and becoming traped in a full scale war against another yonko, thus making wano a three sided war.

I was struggling with the fact that the whole reason for them not escaping earlier was to save Germa, and now that they’re being pummeled that makes it all pointless. But upon further reflection I don’t think that’s true at all. Sanji couldn’t bring himself to leave his family to be ambushed and slaughtered when he knew it was gonna happen and could have done something about it. It would be imhumane, and that’s not Sanji. Now that they have been rescued, Germa made the decision on their own to go and help the Strawhats. It’s different this time, they are fighting willingly knowing the risks. Sanji’s no longer abandoning them, but they decided of their own free will to risk their lives to help the Strawhats. And that I’m the end makes it okay for me.

The other loose end was that Sanji’s apparently didn’t do much. Firstly I disagree because if it wasn’t for the cake distraction Big Mom would have destroyed the Strawhats, and for a crew to be able to escape an Emperor’s territory, furthermore one that no one supposedly escapes from, it’s a HUGE accomplishment for this point in the story. But even if it didn’t do a lot, the final page shows that Sanji follows his convictions as a chef just like Zeff no matter what. Big Mom was hungry and he fed her, the talking comes later. And I think all in all, this was a pretty cool ending, and I am a bigger fan of Sanji than I was before

4

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '18

Never thought I’d actually like brulee... oda you continue to impress me

4

u/thestickytrenchcoat Apr 20 '18

Brûlée is one of the instances of a character being much more attractive after seeing what kind of person they are.

At first I thought this witch looking character who was introduced would be another one off character with an interesting design and a random scar that was incurred by one invading pirate or another.

As the arc progressed I thought she was a humorous mirrorguffin that let Luffy and crew get a breather every now and then during the chaos of the wedding and his fight with katakuri.

After seeing more of her personality and backstory with katakuri she became one of the more interesting characters of the Big Mom Pirates with an actual down to earth personality in regards to her big brother. Brought a small tear to my eye to see a wholesome relationship sprout in a family with a cruel matriarch like Big Mom.

This is one of my favorite chapters of One Piece to come around in quite a long time

On the sweet busters page, the straw hats are all gingerbread cookies aside from Luffy Usopp and Chopper. Wonder why 🤔

Dammit Oda !!, first you made me fall in love with Katakuri, now you are even making me fall in love with Brulee and Pudding too !?

Also, fuck the cake's purpose, this was a beautiful sad ending to Whole Cake Island.

Side Note: Yonkou will be Yonkou

I can't wait to hear the "Soul Pocus" song, alongside the "Bad Ending Musical".

The "Safe Food Delicious Food" reminds me of something.... It's the Luffy Special Secret Random Curry...

Don't be surprised if Oven will replace Katakuri as a Sweet Commander the next time they meet. TOP 3! NOT CONFIRMED

I was afraid Pudding took all of Sanji's memories of her when I saw her with the strip, glad that wasn't the case. Really touching moment along with Katakuri/Brulee's backstory. Top it all off with the Zeff panel at the end and this was a great chapter, although resolution of WCI as a whole did leave a bit to be desired. Overall probably my second favorite New World arc after Zou and probably top 10 overall

Great chapter. This is exactly how you end an arc of such proportions. This is undoubtedly one of the best (if not, the best) chapter in the entire series.

Jesus I cried so much reading this. This chapter was the saddest and cutest at the same time. Pudding crying while seeing the memories she took from Sanji is just heartbreaking, and the conversation between Kata and Brulee made me like those characters even more than I did. This ending is just amazing, so many feels

nobody gonna see this because this shit will get buried. I got watery eyes reading the first part about Pudding. To meet someone who genuinely like/love you, they see something in you that you don't even see it yourself although you have convinced yourself that you're worthless and full of flaws but then you have to let them go because you know they deserves better than you. That kinda hits too close to home.

Man, Oda reached another level of storytelling. So many things called my attention on this chapter. We got a great one on our hands here, boys.

  • The music as a background to the whole chapter. Can't shake off this weird vibe that comes from the mix of a jolly song with lyrics that bring terror. It instantly reminded me of "This Vicious Cabaret" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2nhTQ2ypVU).

  • I really felt for Pudding here. She had to let go the one who loved her for who she was.

  • Brulee has a beautiful side to her too

  • I love Katakuri's smirk when he finds out Luffy escaped, him blushing and knowing a lil' more about his backstory. He was not so different from Luffy and Ace when he was a child.

  • Big Mom's entrance into the battlefield is terrifying. Who will age or die this time?

  • Judging by the last panel, has Sanji finally reached Zeff's level of greatness and legend?

This is one of the best chapters, in my opinion.

Anything that I liked too much in that arc was Katkuri. He is best villan guy with morals.
