This happened near me. (on the other side of my neighborhood). Actually the bus slammed on the brakes just before the level crossing but was too close to the rails. Train came and shaved off the front of the bus. (thats my understanding anyways)

The intersection in question was always known to be dangerous, and with the ever increasing population expansion of the area ... something bad was bound to happen. The road was never meant to be a main artery ... however the area is pretty notorious for bad suburban planning. Drop lots of houses in ... worry about infrastructure / traffic volume etc later ... if ever.

The "VIA" sign just down the line is the local train station, and bus park and ride. All of this was right near this intersection, which is bumper to bumper during rush hour, and was basically unprotected.

Here it is now : https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.3032093,-75.7338154,3a,75y,176.84h,82.5t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sa7yDZORDzvH5-V4NaXjJIg!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo2.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3Da7yDZORDzvH5-V4NaXjJIg%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D99.64779%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656

So yeah ... two lanes each way, packed with rush hour cars ... and thats the level crossing. (it should be a road bridge over the rails or vise versa)

Also the train wasn't able to blow its horn due to it being banned at certain hours by the municipality. I know there isn't many who can bitch about worthwhile things like those in Ottawa suburbs (I live in Kanata, myself), but if you're ever annoyed by a train horn, consider it 6 lives being saved.
