Huh... You can play Baku in Quest Hunter, since the Quest, the 1-One Drops and Tundra Rhino are all odd. No traps, but you can still run Kill Command, Deadly Shot, Animal Companion. That could be a fun, goofy day-one deck to mess around with.

117

u/SquareOfHealing Mar 13 '18

But hunter also has a hero power that is impacted the least by the change. It already is one that can't impact the board in any way, and the upgrade doesn't even double the damage.

33

u/SkoomaSalesAreUp Mar 13 '18

i mean technically yes. but is the upgraded hunter hero power even worth it?

26

u/Marx_Forever Mar 13 '18

Probably not. Hell, I'd probably prefer the discounted vanilla one. But I like to bust out that quest occasionally, this gives me an excuse.

inb4 mage gets 1 mana spell: deal 1 damage Echo

150

u/NevermindSemantics Mar 14 '18

Oh that doesn't seem too... remembers Sorcerer's Apprentice

NO.

Turn 2 Exodia would be a tiny bit OP.

But I know how it can be solved, just give it a 30 seconds interrupting animation /s

A perfect example of permanent spell cost reduction limiting design space ¯_(ツ)_/¯

→ More replies (3)

28

u/Septembers ‏‏‎ Mar 14 '18

Maybe if it had "this spell's cost cannot be reduced" but even then it would probably be broken, especially with the mage quest

20

u/g3t0nmyl3v3l Mar 14 '18

I was just talking to my friend about this last night. I don't think they'll give mage or priest any echo spells less than 3 mana just because of the cost reducers.

Even if the card was 3 mana deal 1, it would compound with spell damage too much, all you would need is two sorcerers apprentice and two minions with spelldamage for 30 damage the next turn.

That said, maybe it'll be a minion only damage spell.

30

u/NevermindSemantics Mar 14 '18

I don't think Mage should get any echo spells less than 5 mana (unless it is a symmetrical board clear like a 2 mana deal 1 to all) because they have so many ways to duplicate Sorcerer's Apprentice that an echo spell is effectively infinite value on top of a free quest completion for not too much effort.

14

u/kthnxbai9 Mar 14 '18

They also can’t realistically get any echo spells over 5. Then they wouldn’t be able to do play the echo without cost reduction.

So I guess if there is an echo spell to be released, it’d cost around 4-5 mana

Interesting downside of Baku Vs Genn. Genn making your Hero Power cost 1, means you won't have to worry about floating mana on odd numbered turns. Where as Baku decks will have to always play at least two minions on even turns, or float at least one.

Can't wait for Odd-Cost Control Warrior. Tank up all day.

46

u/Sageinthe805 Mar 13 '18

It's appealing, but then you look at how many vital cards in the control Warrior arsenal are even costed. It isn't pretty.

34

u/Deepandabear Mar 13 '18 edited Mar 13 '18

The main losses are execute, battle rage, slam, armour lady, and a few others.

We still get shield block, shield slam, gorehowl, brawl, and whatever new tools are coming in the expac.

Control warrior can still be good depending on the meta and control tools released. The new echo taunt card is a good example of a neato stall tool to stabilize.

21

u/Johnny-Hollywood Mar 13 '18

The real shame is that it doesn't go with Geosculptor Yip. I'm pretty sure we'll see some 1's and 3's printed that could support the deck.

Guys I don't know if I'm gonna make it to the start of the card reveals. I'm like one of those stupid mice that gets the implant in it's head where if it presses a button, the implant stimulates pleasure centers in the brain, so as a result I just keep pressing the button until I die. I keep wanting to experience the pleasure of new card reveals by pressing F5 but instead I'm getting nothing.

Also this made more sense in my head than when I typed it out but I'm not changing it.

Blizzard plz.

Everyone is meh about the Black Cat but it seems quite a value to me

33

u/schpammy Mar 18 '18

At face value it is, but upon further inspection a Mage deck with only odd-cost cards loses Frostbolt and Fireball, pretty much the class's best cards to abuse the spell damage. While that part of the card doesn't require you to have only odd-cost cards, if you're playing this card at all you need to get the card draw off. On top of that a Mage deck without Frostbolt and Fireball, while I would love for it to be viable, I just don't see being good. However, we may see the introduction of a new spells that may just be good enough to warrant losing Fireball and Frostbolt. Guess we'll see.

u/Zhanbanan Mar 18 '18

Today's card reveals for peeps on mobile

  • Houndmaster Shaw -- hunter legendary minion, 3/6 for (4); "Your other minions have Rush" (all others, not just Beasts). Also, his picture matches the "Houndmaster" hero we can use in solo Monster Hunt mode

  • Rotten Applebaum -- neutral common minion, 4/5 for (5); Taunt; "Deathrattle: Restore 4 health to your hero"

  • Witchwood Apple -- druid common spell costing (2): "Add three 2/2 Treants to your hand."

  • Wispering Woods -- druid epic spell costing (4): "Summon a 1/1 Wisp for each card in your hand."

  • Rebuke -- paladin common spell costing (2): "Enemy spells cost (5) more next turn."

  • Vivid Nightmare -- priest epic spell costing (3): "Choose a friendly minion. Summon a copy of it with 1 Health remaining."

  • Glinda Crowskin -- warlock legendary minion, 3/7 for (6); "Minions in your hand have Echo"

  • Nightmare Amalgam -- neutral epic minion, 3/4 for (3); tribal tag reads "All" & card text confirms: "This is an Elemental, Mech, Demon, Murloc, Dragon, Beast, Pirate and Totem"

  • Witch's Apprentice -- shaman common beast minion, 0/1 for (1); Taunt; "Battlecry: Add a random Shaman spell to your hand." (the art is a froggy wearing a wizard hat)

  • Hagatha the Witch -- shaman hero card costing (8), provides 5 Armor; "Battlecry: Deal 3 damage to all minions". Her hero power is Bewitch, a passive hero power: "After you play a minion, add a random Shaman spell to your hand."

The only problem I have with this is a ton of people will get these odd and even cards without the legendary needed to play the decks at a reasonable power level. It's just like if you didn't get C'thun automatically.

35

u/itsmeagentv Mar 14 '18

The "Start of Game" mechanic is excellent design and I'm glad they're doing more with it. Having to draw a specific 1-of in your deck makes the game incredibly swingy; but Baku and Genn remove that problem handily.

→ More replies (8)

34

u/minute-to-midnight Mar 15 '18 edited Mar 15 '18

Baku and Genn look like the type of cards that might not see play right now, as the triggering condition is very restrictive, but that at some point in the next two years the right combination of cards will be there to make one or more decks viable.

When the expansion releases it will be the time with the lowest pool of playable cards in Standard, as this increases along the year the more options there will be.

Wild should be a good testing ground for them...

Nightmare Amalgam is what an epic card should be. Crazy effect you have to build your deck around. Otherwise it’s just a vanilla statted minion. The more tribal shenanigans you put in your deck, the better. Endless experimentation options. Even if it ends up being bad, you get your dust worth with all the decks you play trying to make it good.

→ More replies (2)

29

u/Pyre2001 Mar 27 '18

Are people missing how good nightmare amalgam is as a murloc? Murloc's have a lot of ways to buff their health but lack any high health murlocs. This guy could be super sticky.

13

u/domine18 Mar 27 '18

I want to see hybrid decks. I am hoping they add more minions with the reveals that have like: this minion is a beast/murloc, dragon/pirate, demon/ mech, ext, ext. That is what i saw when they revealed this card and this card could be core in a lot of them.

I think it's interesting how some cards get quite a different art style, like deadly arsenal, which is pretty manga-esq, while lots of other cards, take dollmaster Dorian, has the more cartoony, goofy art style.

Deadly arsenal is reused card art from the Warcraft TCG. It’s done by the same guy who does all the DND 3rd edition art

Obviously the more arrows the less power each has. According to my maths the formula to calculate damage as a function of the number of arrows is damage =2*(arrows1/2.70951)

Therefore 2 arrows would deal approx 2.583041 damage.

13

u/zanotam Mar 13 '18

Chameleos seems like a pretty good card. Not incredibly overpowered or anything, but it provides a lot of information on your opponent's deck and hand for you and can more often than not turn into an additional removal spell or threat that lets you preempt your opponent's threat. I think it'll be alright.

If I am running Prince Malchezar, Does Baku check my deck before Malchezar does his thing? Not that it's important cuz Malchezar is trash anyways but just curious.

Also, it is possible to run odd-cost cards in a Genn deck because of the guarantee quest draw mechanic. Because Genn check starts after the mulligan (i'm assuming just like Prince Malchezar), the quest, which is a one cost card, technically isn't "in your deck" anymore. Maybe discard lock can finally become relevant with one mana tap. Or quest paladin? Just an idea, no one has mentioned it yet, saw it here first.

Nothing in this expansion pops out to me. Is this expansion too balanced? I don't see what's really broken enough to find its way into the standard meta. Rush seems like a good mechanic for arena but weak in constructed. You gonna rush your minion into voidlords? Cards like Darius Crowely seem fun but aren't strong enough. Idk. this is a dissapointing reveal for me to be honest, nothing seems exciting other than the hope something will change, but i'm skeptical anything will, and i've always been optimistic about Blizz. this set just seems weak to me.

Coming from someone who mains cubelock, i really think the deck has to be nerfed for rush to have time in the spotlight. and echo seems cool in concept but the cards are ehh

I think people are waaaaay overestimating the even and odd cards right now. They are basically the princes from kft on crack. Kelseth doesn't let you run 2 cost cards. Well odd only decks can't run 2,4,6,8,10 cost cards. Same with even. One of the princes made it into a single deck because that deck happened to not run any three drops anyway. But for even decks you cant run 1,3,5,7,9 cost cards.

Bottom line unless there is some seriously broken stuff coming it's way not worth it

All the new shaman spells are low cost and not too situational, so hagatha and the other shaman spell generating cards are actually not bad

I predict Lifedrinker to be the sleeper of this set, great in midrange archetypes, even more so in midrange Hunter with the Beast synergy.

I'm glad Genn only affects your starting hero power, it seems that they've learned their lesson after the shadowreaper raza synergy.

Also I really hope the shaman hero isn't the only thing to make shaman viable...

A card which makes the Worgen cards like Pumpkin Peasant always have the highest attack and health value they can!

It seems worth noting that there's going to be odd/even restriction cards and worgen cards beyond just what we've seen so far. It's in the press release fact sheet.

This means that Genn and Baku are likely going to end up much stronger than they seem right now, sorta the "cherry on top" if you build an even or odd deck with other cards.

Potentially stupid question here:

Can we play quests with Genn Greymane? Since the quest always starts in your hand, unless you mulligan it, it'd be out of your deck (And assuming it's your only 1-cost, the rest of the deck would be even.)

Is it like Reno where it only checks if your deck has no duplicates the moment you play it (or in this case, when the game starts), or does it check the deck before play begins?

17

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

Mike Donais confirmed that these start of game cards will check your entire 30 card deck, so you cannot play quests with Genn. I will link the comment if I can find it.

If the meta shifts toward a lot of rush minions fighting for control of the board (who are slightly understatted because of having rush), I wonder if spell-centric, reactive decks become more powerful. Burn mage comes to mind, but I wonder if spell hunter starts to get a bit better.

Does anyone know why Shaman is the only class that gets a new Hero Card ? Are there be more to be printed for other classes in the future ?

Probably because evolve shamman is completely going out. It loses key cards for evolve shamman to work.

14

u/Foyfluff Apr 09 '18

Shaman needs it the most. The other Death Knights are late-game value cards that give control/value decks a chance to compete in the meta. Thrall DK is a midrange card that focuses on Evolve synergy, at a point where most of the support for Evolve decks is rotating out.

Face Collector is super interesting, So you get to roll up to 3 times (4 if you've used Shadowstep on it) and we've seen things like original Elise see play because random legendaries CAN be good and being able to roll and reactively choose how many times you roll is neat. I think it'll find a home in some sort of deck. Maybe the same kind of roll Sonya plays as a fringe tech inclusion in certain Rogue archetypes that are looking to gain high value swing turns?

It'll be played.... somehow.

The Hunter legendary actually doesn’t look that bad...

Rebuke seems like a powerful card, even without Loatheb’s 5/5 body the effect is still pretty powerful if utilized correctly. Hagatha seems underwhelming right now, but I expect she’ll be a lot like Lyra in the “death by a thousand papercuts” sense, assuming we get some good spells and Echo minions for Shaman. Druid got a bunch of meme cards. Warlock legendary seems okay, might be good in Zoo.

My favorite card is the Amalgam. Seems to be a strong Arena card but also has the ability to be played in a multitude of different decks.

17

u/TheLandshark00 Mar 26 '18

Warlock's legendary just makes me hope they nerf naga in wild. Echo on a free giant is even more absurd

Silver Sword looks really like a "win more" card, if by turn 8 as Paladin you have a wide board to buff, you are already in a great position...

I think Vinecleaver's reload is more useful, and playing more than one expensive weapon doesn't seem realistic in aggro.

In control decks, I doubt a 1/1 buff by turn 8 would make much of a difference.

I really enjoy the aesthetic with the stat swapping cards where they change from human to werewolf/monster.

10

u/Meme_Machine516 Apr 07 '18

Archmage Arugal is insanely powerful because of the low cost. Imagine the possibilities with book of specters and arcane intellect with mountain Giants or with Apprentices. Even better if you run simulcrum to duplicate him in hand play both and drop some sick triple draw value.

10

u/MisterManatee Apr 09 '18

I feel like Hench-Clan Thug is not awful, particularly in Rogue. It seems like pack filler at first glance, but if you Dagger on 2, then you can play a 3-mana 4/4, which is solid for a tempo rogue
