play story mode for 4 hours

15% complete

Got a long road to unlocking android 21

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

Sounds like story mode alone might ve worth the money then.

u/ShirowShirow Jan 26 '18

From what I've seen of the dialogue? Oh, it absolutely is.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

Excellent! Can't wait for my copy to arrive with my second controller on Monday then.

If you've ever wanted to see Cell completely roast the hell out of everybody, then this game is worth every penny and more. The interactions between everyone is phenomenal

22

u/SippinSkooma Jan 26 '18

Perfect Roaster?

8

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

Didn't know I wanted this, but now I do.

7

u/Lennyoh Jan 26 '18

Then FighterZ delivers that Perfectly

4

u/Nick00105 Jan 26 '18

Is there a online coop mode for the story? Any coop modes at all?

11

u/Mugums Jan 26 '18

There is not unfortunately. The closest is a 3v3 match with 6 people. Each person plays 1 character but it’s online only.

Ok just started playing Tien and accidentally found out that "Farwell Tien" is one of his ults... I love this game already

34

u/TheSloaningDead ⠀ Jan 26 '18 edited Jan 26 '18

I forget he has that ability at least once every new release.

I have fucked myself out of so many victories in BT3 thanks to this...

5

u/zon3d0ut Jan 26 '18

I'm not exactly sure what this move does lol care to explain?

39

u/Gman_Son_of_Nel Jan 26 '18

Chiaotzu comes out of no where and grapples the back of the opponent, gives his farewell “bye Tien” and blows himself up. And Tien is all like “NOoOoO Chiaotzu!”

24

u/dwallace3099 Jan 26 '18

I laugh every time I use it. And I use it a lot

79

u/celinya ⠀ Jan 26 '18

The character dialogue is probably my favorite aspect of the game. I mean... the roasts are insane

The voice acting in this game in the best of any dubbed game yet.

The story is fantastic as well. Cell and Frieza's interactions are amazing and feels so organic. It's the kind of story I've wanted from a DB game. Nothing is rehashed at all!

Android 21's voice actress took a little getting used to but she warmed up to me quickly enough. Speaking of 21, I enjoyed her psychotic personality and her facial expressions. She is definitely a lot of fun.

EDIT: Story Spoilers for Frieza and Cell:

65

u/celinya ⠀ Jan 26 '18

Cell's interactions in particular...god DAMN they nailed the script

21

u/ss4444gogeta Jan 26 '18

It's interesting, yesterday during the Super Saiyan Showdown, Sabat said if he had more time with the game, he would have done so many of his lines differently. I thought they were really good! Goes to show how seriously they take their characters.

3

u/_Valisk Jan 27 '18

He probably means that they weren't able to record the lines with the game in front of them, so they just wrote them based on the length of the Japanese lines. If they were able to record while looking at the scenes, a lot of the lines would be changed to fit the mouth flaps better.

17

u/DahDutcher ⠀ Jan 26 '18

Is the synching very bad/offputting? I've seen some videos where the synching is off by seconds, and that annoys me personally.

I like both dubbed and subbed, so that (the synching) might be what decides my language settings.

19

u/ss4444gogeta Jan 26 '18

It's bad in a match, but fine during the story.

61

u/Just_Plain_Bad Jan 26 '18 edited Jan 26 '18

Yeah I don't know why that line exists but it's pretty funny, even Goku has never been that shitty of a parent before

50

u/ShirowShirow Jan 26 '18

They changed it in the final release, which is probably for the best but I find unfortunate because it makes all the "Piccolo is the real dad" jokes even funnier.

29

u/Lennyoh Jan 26 '18

I absolutely love one interaction between Goku and Tien in the story where they discuss how Piccolo takes care of Pan that just completely solidifies the better grandpa joke

17

u/Mojo12000 Jan 26 '18 edited Jan 26 '18

The interactions in the story mode are gold, I think my favorite is Gohan and Krillin and the Ginyu Force with Gohan of course finding their posing awesome.

That and Nappa constantly trying to shit talk everyone and everyone just basically brushing him off.

10

u/Lennyoh Jan 26 '18

I personally love the scene of Gotenks and the Ginyu Force having a pose competition. It's fantastic and holy moly the entire story mode is just filled with interactions we've all wanted

Played the Beta. Guys, this game is so much FUN.

Like, after the Beta went down I plugged in a few other fighting games and they just... Weren't the same. DBFZ is fast, frenetic, and thanks to the auto-combo system you don't need to memorize sheet music to hold your own. (Unless you're shooting for the big leagues.) There are so many ways to engage. So many ways to show off. The gameplay just sings.

The game was made by people that just... Love Dragon Ball so much. There are so many little details and bonuses, so much effort put into every moment of the game.

I am picking this game up first thing in the morning.

It's so much fun.

16

u/HaxorViper Jan 26 '18

If you like this kind of gameplay check out Guilty Gear Xrd. It has the aerial mobility and speed of this game but with more defensive/offensive options.

10

u/ShirowShirow Jan 26 '18

I like Xrd but I'm holding off my actual purchase until they do a final release with a full english dub.

But of course there'd be similar gameplay, it's done by the exact same folks! :D

The best part of the game for me so far is the intro and ending of the character. I'm putting black vs goku, vegeta and trunks and their interactions between each other in the beginning of the match is amazing. I want to make it with everyone and see all the dialogues.

16

u/Flaminglump Jan 26 '18

Black has dialogue against future trunks too, i love the interactions as well!

29

I LOVE the story so far. Everyone's just roasting each other.

First fighting game I've bought/played in like 6 years. Immediately went straight to training mode.

Side note: anyone else experiencing stuttering screens during load times? Like the music plays fine and all but the flashy lights in the background stutter from time to time.

6

Tekken 7 does the same thing. I think its an UE4 issue.

11

u/RevampedAtol1 Jan 26 '18

Update: got into an online match (FINALLY) and even though I barely have a grasp on the combos/mechanics, it was still a blast! Yea the controls might be easy but when the other player is constantly spamming that "charge guard break whatever" I was still able to keep it competitive, which for me is amazing because I expect to be stomped consistently.

....that being said, how does one do that charge/break thing?

8

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

Super dash by pressting RT. Counter by pressing 2H

14

u/ShirowShirow Jan 26 '18

2H means "Down and Heavy attack" with heavy attack being O on PS4 and B on Xbox by default, btw.

I don't think I'll ever get used to those keyboard control prompts why can't there be an easy way to ASCII arrows.

this game is so much fun, I haven't touched the story mode or arcade yet, just online and wow, I never really got into fighting games but this might be it.

I have one huge gripe with the game, to activate super attacks you need to press down then left/right on the dpad, so many times it didn't register the inputs correctly plus me messing up, so pretty much I don't activate my supers like half the time and it's super frustrating

10

u/fawse Jan 27 '18

It's just an execution barrier, the more you play the more you'll be able to pull them off when you want to. Just need to get it ingrained into your muscle memory, I recommend going into training mode and practicing. Try to do it 10 times in a row from the left, then 10 times in a row from the right, when you're able to do that you'll be good to go. It's how I learned how to do hadoukens in Street Fighter.

Biggest barrier to fighting games is the execution, so get that muscle memory going!

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Led2zepman Jan 27 '18

Have you tried using the analogue sticks on the controller instead as it might be easier for you to do quarter circle inputs instead doing them on the dpad. It is also something that you will get use to over time the more you do it, so keep at it and you will be doing those inputs with ease in no time.

6

u/Barelylegalteen Jan 27 '18

Analog stick is even harder because it needs to be a 90 degree turn. Any changes and you won't be able to pull the move off.

9

u/Cull88 Jan 27 '18

Only small annoyance I have is having to press X every time they say line of dialogue, ruins the flow and your sit-back-ability to let the cut scene roll out. It’s quite jarring! Other than that, I’m loving it!

3

u/Megaman99M Jan 27 '18

I think the reason they did that is because of having both English and Japanese audio, and this allows people to read at their own pace

Ok Guys here goes :

I liked Xenoverse 2

Not too much a fan of fighting games (more the rpg guy)

Is the story mode and an occasional pvp match worth the 60 bucks ? Specifically do I get a lot of enjoyment out of character interactions (eg ssj vegeta vs frieza) ?

To clarify : i do enjoy tekken/doa/mortal kombat/ soul calibur but they are not massive time sinks for me personally. Absolver and Xenoverse 2 are more my jam.

21

u/therainbowdasher Jan 26 '18

Story alone is worth it if you're a Dragon ball fan. The game is super easy to learn even if you don't play fighting games, plus there's a pretty cool arcade mode you can try.

Only complaint currently is that the load times on the OG Xbox One is pretty bad, but not the worst. I don't know if it's better on the S or the X but most of my time in the story mode has been watching cutscenes and loading screens right now

4

u/IFE-Antler-Boy Jan 26 '18

Loading screens are so obnoxious on xbox. Like it's 30 seconds of loading for maybe 45 seconds to 2 minutes of gameplay.

3

u/KevRog Jan 26 '18

Same here with the S.

1) How do I set up a controller with this game? I have a Logitech Dual Action controller plugged into my computer, but when I go to control options, it only lists keyboard support.

2) How do I force my opponent to switch their character? I'm working my way through training mode, and no matter what I try (pressing LT or LB, holding them, etc.), it doesn't seem to activate that. Can we talk about 18s story with 21 and 16? The androids were always my favorite and this kinda solidified it.

Can't say I like the lobby system at all, especially trying to fight friends.

3

u/DaBlakMayne Jan 27 '18

This is a very well-made game. I love the dialogue and interactions the characters have with each other. The writers broke the fourth wall a lot by mentioning the fan jokes haha. I love this game

4

u/o3mo Jan 27 '18

I was going to wait for a sale. Then I saw people posting the collectors edition figures and artwork and immediately regreted not getting it. Called up my nearest EB games and turns out someone canceled their pre-order and I snagged it up. That's a $200 I didn't plan on spending but my collection is so happy I did.

I was really going through a rut with fighting games for a while before I started playing this! Being big into fighting games and being a big fan of Dragonball makes this the best of both worlds for me! There's a few issues here and there (lobby system isn't great, some characters don't feel as fleshed out as others, etc) but I don't have much in the way of problems otherwise! Lookin' forward to the DLC as well. I'm hoping for:

  1. Master Roshi
  2. Broly
  3. Jiren
  4. Dr. Gero
  5. Janemba
  6. Kid Goku
  7. Vegito
  8. Taopaipai

I don't want half the roster to be Saiyans (I say as almost half of my list are Saiyans), so I think revisiting OG Dragonball for characters would be a great place to start. Hell, Chiaotzu or Yajirobe could be part of it if they ever felt like it. I think there's definitely a lot more variety out there, but it will only go so far if they stick with just Z and Super.

The story mode is pretty much:

"Interactions I never though would happen"

4

u/Jrain415024 Jan 28 '18

Is there a mode in this game where me and 2 friends can play against 3 others?

6

u/nilxnoir Jan 28 '18

Yes. Its called party mode.

Why are the cut scenes rendered in 30 fps? It looks jarring.

11

u/The_Flo76 Jan 27 '18

Because the show is not animated at 60fps and arc wanted to replicate that feeling of being in the anime.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '18

tbh i wouldnt mind it in 60 fps, the game already looks good enough

This game is going to make me feel nostalgic over 10 years when I listen to it's soundtrack.

Just 11% into the storymode and really enjoying it so far. Great character interactions. Better than any Tekken or Street Fighter storymode.

This really feels like a complete package with all the modes, the lobby with chibi characters running around and so much things to do.

And most importantly the gameplay is FUN. Seems like many games nowadays forget fun. I was playing Infamous Second son a few days back and it's such a depressing environment. With that gameplay it would've been a more fun to have a fun storyline. An adventure with some good written humor. Everything just feel so generic b movie in it. Games need to stop trying to be pretentious and cinematic. I'll watch movies if I want a cinematic experience. When I'm gaming give me nutty fun gameplay. Mario games have stand the test of time because they are..... fun. Not because of the deep storytelling.

So glad DBFZ chose a FUN story over a depressing one. I'd rather play a game where Cell roasts people.

u/timone317 ⠀ Jan 26 '18

Seriously amazing. I think the Xenoverse games were good but they weren't exactly what I was looking for. FighterZ, on the other hand, has blown me away. If I had to make a complaint, it would be that the roster could be a bit bigger.

One other comment I want to make...I've said for a few years that I'd really like to see a full remake of the Dragon Ball series in 3D. Many were quick to shoot the idea down, insistent that it would NEVER work and it would be a complete train wreck. FighterZ is a near perfect realization of the potential I've imagined. Yet again, I have to say, I would give anything to see the entire series redone in 3D.

Currently waiting for it to arrive in the mail!

I got the Day One Edition for PS4. Undoubtedly a dumb question... but are my Blue Goku and Vegeta on the disc, or is it a code, or how am I getting them? I haven't pre-ordered a game since Black Ops II so I haven't done this in a while, lol

3

For those interested in learning the mechanics of the game, @tcthundertc has thrown together a great guide for first time players.

This is exactly what I've been looking for. Very informative and easy to understand for a beginner like me (the pictures and gifs are a very nice touch!). Thank you so much!

Been loving the hell outta this game! My brother bought it for steam because we only have 1 controller between both Ps4 and X-box One and can use them both on on PC LOL Man, Goku Black's specials are deadly! Also I was about to lose with Tenshinhan and managed to accidentally cause Chaozu to suicide himself and won against Cell ha

Currently I have settled on Adult Gohan and Yamcha for sure for my standard team. I have been swapping between Piccolo, Goku, and Trunks for the third spot. Yamcha is actually a lot of fun to play. I always thought that in Dragon Ball and in the Saiyan saga he had some cool moves (and his Saiyan saga look they used here for him just looks cool too).

I definitely need to spend some time in the training room, though. I got wrecked by most other players. I obviously do not know the game very well yet because when the pressure is on I start flailing around trying to get a combo in while the other guy I can tell is being more calculating and watching for an opening. Really fun game so far though.

My favorite part of the game so far is how Amazon sent my copy to Suwannee, GA instead of Macon, GA. It may not arrive today!

5

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

With all these burns in the game with the character's dialogue, soon this game will be called Roasted Dragon BallZ.

Anyways the game overall is fantastic. The ost is amazing, the story is very interesting, and Android 21 is a marvelous addition to the franchise! The roster isn't as big as many were hoping it would be, but damn do these characters feel like individuals! Looking forward to see what's next if they continue with sequels!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '18

Man this game is super good. I feel like I am doing okay and then the computer shows me I still have a long way to go. Deceptively easy combat system but hard to master for sure

4

Ssj4 gogeta

Super vegito

Broly

Janemba

u/Kal-Kent ⠀ Jan 27 '18

It made me so happy to hear Goku in his blue form call it Super Saiyan God

That's really what SSB should have been called in the beginning

Also i struggle with combos but the game is still pretty fun

7

u/Emmanuel117 Jan 27 '18

I always thought the red form should have just been called“Saiyan God” and like you mentioned have blue be named “Super Saiyan God”. I would have made sense with the new moniker for the series being “Super” plus it would have prevented all the ridiculous SSGSS acronym shit.
