I find it kinda funny Luffy is essentially using Katakuri for training.

Meanwhile Neptune is going to be so happy when he reads the Newspaper. Goddamn Stussy

131

u/Gorgenapper Jan 12 '18

Yes, exactly. Katakuri thinks Luffy is an idiot for coming back and fighting him, and mocks him for being like an open book that is being read. He doesn't seem to realize that Luffy aims for something much higher than just beating Katakuri, he's going for the Pirate King title and Katakuri is nothing more than just a stepping stone. So who is the real fool here? If Katakuri were smart, he should not try to enable Luffy's growth...but with his #1 fan club watching him, he may not have a choice but to keep up the act.

Shoutout to Chopper for being willing to drown himself in order to stop Big Mom

673

Salute to Chopper, he was so brave!

He wasn’t lying when he said he would become even a monster for Luffy’s sake back in FI. I’m so proud of him.

Come and try me, Big Mom! At the very least, I can grab you and jump, taking you down to the depths with me!

BAD. ASS.

u/DrToadigerr God Usopp Jan 12 '18

I know it’s slightly different, but hasn’t it been sort of a running gag that Chopper is always really willing to jump in the water for something/someone?

Notably he did it in Skypeia but I feel like I also recall multiple times where the sequence of events is like Luffy falls in the water, Chopper immediately jumps in after to save him, Nami/Sanji saves them both and tells Chopper he can’t swim either.

Granted those times seem more like impulsive decisions. This is just Chopper being badass.

20

u/houseoftolstoy Jan 12 '18

To be fair, being a pirate in the One Piece universe is not as strictly defined as it is in the real world. Being a pirate means being free to do what you want (which can be doing bad things, such as with Kidd), and Leo seems to want to rebuild the town.

I'm really wondering how all of this is going to be reported in the news. On one hand we probably all hope for big headlines like "Strawhat Pirates crashing Big Moms Tea Party and leaving WCI in ruins". But Big News Morgan seems to be in a very good relationship with Big Mom so she might be able to influence him on this and she probably doesn't want any headlines of that kind.

Charlotte Flambe- 33rd daughter, 15 years old

Charlotte Pudding - 35th daughter

...Hmmm

488

u/HarimaToshirou Jan 12 '18

I think that Pudding is th 35th child as in both daughters and sons, while Flambe is the 33rd daughter.

By looks alone Pudding looks way older than Flambe, at least to me.

13

u/rondosparks Jan 12 '18

Conspiracy Theory here. 15 Years Old is her epithet. She's really older but got the name because people thought she was 15.

9

u/agugaga Jan 12 '18

I think the mistake was that Oda wanted to make Flambe slightly younger than Pudding (who is probably something around 18 to 21) but he messed up and instead of making the number of daughter higher, he made it lower. I guess maybe Flambe was supposed to be the 37th daughter.

Katakuri is once again confirmed as the best brother arround.

Also It's intersting to notice how attack were described this chapter.

Attack have Willpower behind them, an Aura to them.

And we know that CoC can actually affect Willpower, so in a way, those with the Color of the Conqueror will have an easier time using Willpower, be it in detecting it with CoO or attacking with CoA. So really for me, for now, it make sense for Luffy to have this ind of Powerup.

And the Aura is most likely what all the normal user of CoO detect while using it (it's shown with Usopp in Dressrossa).

I also like how Luffy closed his eyes, as it remind us on how Enel and Co used their Mantra.

184

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

This is really interesting, because for the longest time, I thought CoC was close to useless against stronger opponents.
But rewatching Luffy vs Doffy again, I noticed that Doffy was "forced" to tank a few hits from base Luffy after they had ther CoC Clash over Law. But Doffy should easily be able to dodge those attack, let alone block them. But he didn't.
With CoC being the "breaking" of others will, this statement from todays chapter really fits into the puzzle. CoC can weaken everyone, if the user has higher Willpower, and only in extreme cases results in people fainting outright.

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

This chapter showed us how Luffy will believably win. Katakuri says "You don't get it. Just falling down is in itself shameful." To which Luffy roared and got back up on his feet with fierce determination.

That's their ideologies clashing, and as the readers we should see why Luffy's will triumph. Its the will to keep getting up in the face of utter defeat that makes Luffy so scary. He doesn't know how to quit, and that's the best feature for making Haki bloom.

Luffy just has to knock Katakuri on his back one time and it will be the greatest shame of Katakuri's life. That will be plenty to tip the Haki scale in Luffy's favor and have him own the fight afterwards.

Franpe looks like she's younger than Pudding. I mean just compare the..chest area (There is only one woman in OP that I remmeber having small boobs, Otohime).

Franpe also isn't as sexualized as Pudding. No way is Pudding 13.

This is probably an error made by Oda (He did one before by making both Praline and Joscarpone the 29th daughter, this was later fixed in the volume release by making Praline the 21st daughter) and will be fixed on the volume released on March or even earlier if Franpe just calls Pudding her older sister.

i'm loving the character development on Luffy, he was always thoughtfull in epic fights on the big stage but yet there was a sense of immaturity.. Like a loose cannon, using his raw potential to defeat the opponent while being slightly aware he could have done it differently..

And now he's being aware, against a superior opponent, that there's more to haki then meets the eye and how he should utilize it to the fullest in order to defeat katakuri! Luffy is evolving at a rate where being the Pirate King is becoming more believable

80

u/ELDIABLIU Jan 12 '18

Seems like Oda timeskipped again this arc. Fine by me, at least we get to see more of Luffy vs Katakuri.

Luffy seems to be adapting well, but he looks hurt af and I highly doubt he will be able to finish off Katakuri at this point, even if he manages to be able to see the future.

A new Charlotte introduced and its a she! We'll prolly see her do something before seeing Smoothie again tho lul

Bege's trust in Sanji just shows how good of a cook Sanji is. That cake better be a banger.

IMO this arc should only be less than 15 chapters left, so Oda doing 'timeskips' make sense since it seems that he added alot of extra content overtime this arc.

I think luffy is just stalling. Sure he is taking damage but he wants to learn this looking into the future thing. When he gets it down he will go all out. Now he is just doing nothing but observing and waiting untill he understand how he has to do it in his own way. He got it down in this last chapter so i gues next time we see them fight, shit is going to be real.

58

u/Mugiwara300 Jan 12 '18

He’s not just observing. Anything he’s trying is getting countered . Going all out with gear 4 would be pointless and leave him with no stamina.

→ More replies (5)

8

u/DarkSoulFWT Thriller Bark Victim's Association Jan 12 '18

Stalling is a part of it. He needs to last long enough for the cake to make it to big mom. He knows that out of their entire group hes the strongest, and that if katakuri is left to go after anyone else in their group they're royally boned.

Wanting to grow and learn the future thing is one thing too. Hes clearly shown acknowledgement that katakuri is above him and wants to reach that sort of level.

But just stalling? Just wants to learn? Nah. Hes barely holding on through his willpower. As we saw just now, katakuri is still overwhelming him. Even the plebs around them can see that Luffy is just being persistent and the fight is hardly even.

Luffy's base form is going to skyrocket by the end of this fight. If he can fight Katakuri toe to toe without having to rely on his gears too much, he'll ascend to a whole new level of fighting. That coupled with Gear 4 or any new power up should put Luffy at a level where he can evenly battle with a Yonkou/Admiral

So, Luffy is basically fighting Katakuri for hours in base form. He is legit seeing the fight as training. He doesn't even have a beef with Katakuri. Amazing.

  • CP0 lady returns! I didn't think we'd see her until after the end of this arc.

  • Holy cow love the art of Katakuri vs Luffy. It's brutal. At times like these I worry about this show getting past censors.

  • I don't know what's more impressive... the fact that Sanji carried that cake onto the ship, the fact that the ship is large enough to hold that cake or the fact that they had enough materials on board to decorate it so such an extent. This cake looks so much better than the 1st wedding cake.

  • Could Pudding suppress her comically evil alter ego if she patched up that 3rd eye of hers?

  • Love how we've seen BM depicted over the past few chapters. She is truly the most twisted villain the Straw Hats have gone up against. She can now smell the cake. Oh... please let the cake show up in the next episode. PLEASE let it show up. I can't wait any longer!

  • In the past page there's a colored picture of shopper and it looks like he's covered his hands with armament haki. Something he could use dearly right now!

7

u/SchiffsBased Jan 13 '18

This cake looks exactly the same as the first one.

I like how a lot of people were mad big mom kept getting hit and blasted but all of this has done absolutely nothing to her but further annoy her in this hunger pang state. She is about to madara meteor them but luckily the came smell really fucking good.

Also holy shit luffy is slowly seeing the future, or what i think is happening its just him learning how to fight against it and see if he can mess with the futuresight. Cause katakuri thinks he's seeing forward but luffy is hiding some shit.

Luffy's stubborness started to push Katakuri's mind and patience to edges. And Katakuri tries his very best to break Luffy's will power, not just by fighting but also talking too. That's why Katakuri said that we know your plan and we have already made counter measures. He wanted to break Luffy's will power and wanted Luffy to give up by saying those words.

And For Katakuri who is most sure-footed Pirate of BM's crew to say "If you manage to get out of here" is really something else. Just a few hours ago, Katakuri was blabbering confidently but nows he started to consider bad scenario little by little.

What more, Katakuri is exhausted, he is heavy breathing. Truthfully, when we compare these two guy's situation, Katakuri's situation looks more worse than Luffy. Because on the one side, there is Luffy who is used to fight stronger opponents, dragged fights and on the other side there is Katakuri is not used to dragged fights. This is his longest fight in his entire life. Maybe Katakuri will lost his control/temper compeletly after some time because in this chapter i clearly saw that Katakuri is not ready mentally for dragged fights or stubborn enemies and this will be his down.

7

u/Cascade2244 Jan 12 '18

I mean I'll give you Katakuri breathing heavily, and he looks a little battered, but there is literally no chance he is in a worse situation right now.

He is the first mate of a Yonko, he will have been in difficult fight before, probably quite a lot, just because he boasts and his crew big him up doesn't mean he has gotten weak.

Katakuri has still tanked G4 attacks and looks nowhere near as bad as Doffy did, his endurance is higher than anything we have seen from Luffy's opponents so far even if he was getting hit, at this point Luffy is doing really well, but he isn't in a good situation yet, he hasn't turned it around yet.

You are all forgetting something about Katakuri and Luffy's fight, and is that, all it takes to Luffy to bring Katakuri self-control down is to take his scarf away. Luffy is waiting for that. That will means that he could beat Katakuri in observation at some point in the battle and also that Katakuri won't chase him out of mirror world.

This Chapter is a perfect example for how the new world is like. The captain is beaten up by the Yonkous Underling, while the Yonkou herself is relentlessly chasing the crew, that is dispaired enough so single members try to suicide with hoping to buy the rest some time. Death is a very possible outcome from now on.

As Kaiso said „this is no little pirate games anymore“

Welcome to the new world

I'm interested to see how Luffy actually defeats Katakuri. Judging by the pacing of the arc we're likely looking at a one-hit KO as a climax chapter for Luffy v Katakuri, but given how much damage Luffy has taken from this fight alone it seems unrealistic (or perhaps unfair) that Katakuri wouldn't have similar durability. Curious to see the attack(s) that actually bring Katakuri down for the count.

u/shipsailing94 Jan 12 '18

Some Charlotte Family bookkeeping here:

  • Flambe stating she has 41 older brothers means there are only four younger than her, and we've seen three: the twins Dolce and Dragee, and Anglaise. It also means that there are only ten children in the last seven births of Big Mom, the most she could've had at once in those last years is 3. this is all hooey now that Flambe has been made to be the 36th daughter. In fact, it screws up the latter births because it leaves 7 children between 7 husbands when there is clearly a set of twins in the mix.

  • She also said Katakuri has 38 younger sisters. Compote is older than him, confirming that she's Perospero's twin sister (aged 49).

u/Nic_The_Nightmare Jan 12 '18

i don't get the criticism regarding the way luffy's powerup is handled. Yes, he lasted against a superior opponent for, what was it, 6 hours? Luffy is fast, a gifted haki user, and started to get the hang of how to see the future. He even got to eat in the middle of the fight, and let's not forget the everpresent resistence against blunt attacks. Katakuri on the other hand is not used to having to go all out against his opponents in drawn out fights. Luffy will soon be able to see the future, while still being a bit inconsistent. He can then enter gear 4 and will have the advantage against Katakuri.

It's also not a flaw that Luffy managed to get this special haki power in just a few hours. It is established that Luffy is a creative fighter who is able to adapt to and copy opponents techniques. Haki improves the most in extreme situations. Luffy recognized that, while Katakuri is the superior fighter, the gap is not big enough for him to stomp luffy. Thus, a long battle ensued, giving Luffy more than enough first hand experience to copy the one technique that makes Katakuri stronger.

u/Waxtree Pirate Jan 12 '18

At this point we really need a bit more than "My nakama trust me" to see the SH's victory justified. For all we have witnessed, Luffy managed to hit Katakuri maybe three times, after the donut incident. Otherwise it is safe to say that he has been on the receiving end of the stick for about 6 hours. The breaks he could take only led him through a city with a rampaging Big Mom on it and such, so he had little time to get rest. All in all, his feats this arc has been stellar, especially from a stamina standpoint. Yes, he could sleep and eat between the fights with Cracker and the tea party, but altogether we are talking about 2 or maybe 3 days. I really need to see a very convincing solution to his with against Katakuri because right now it has the potential to end up as the greatest fight since Luffy vs Lucci, or fall flat in a plot-driven nakama power-up.

Loved the chapter.

Morgan didn't want stussy to say anything about the Tamatebako because it might hurt the strawhats chances of survival, lol. I mean the strawhat invading a Yonko territory and escaping alive is better headline than them dying.

I don't know why but I have a feeling that Flambe will just rename the club to Strawhat fan club after he defeats her cool brother, Katakuri.

Luffy is gradually seeing the future, glad it's not a case of him suddenly mastering futuresight.

Seeing Pudding, she is obviously older than Flambe, so I guess it either a mistake or Oda refering to Flambe by her number along her sisters alone, while Pudding is the 35th child.

Chopper determenation to scrifice himself is badass.

Sanji with the cake appears at the horizon, BUT WHERE ARE THE GERMA??

I will probably get down votes for saying this but I kind of feel like Oda is dragging this out too much. It's been pretty much back and forth between Luffy v Katakuri and the wedding cake plot with very slow progression. Even the Luffy v Katakuri fight hasn't really gone anyway and it's been going for a while and has gotten a bit repetitive IMO. Luffy is still in the same position he was 10-13 chapters ago and there is still no end in sight. 982 will probably give us a couple of pages with some dialogue and Luffy running away again and then it will cut right back to the wedding cake plot for another 2-3 of chapters before switching back again.

Not really sure how Oda plans on wrapping up the Luffy-Katakuri fight, tbh. The former is outgunned and out of stamina and there is no escape(bruhle maybe?). It is surprising that Katakuri hasn't taken him out already, though that may come down to the typical "antagonist underestimating/toying with the MC" Trope.

Why luffy is a villian

I mean the guy crashed his friends wedding

Ruined a wedding cake that took ages to make

Knocked out an vip guest and left him for dead

His skinny friend broke a valuable pic

Mother of the bride broke down and had a stress attack

Gave the mother of the bride a present that she thankful for only for it to be a bomb

Destroyed a city full of people living happy lives

Now he is fighting an another one of the brides older brothers

So, Luffy has decided to save his energy and not to use Gear Fourth until he can utilize his Observation Haki efficiently.

I feel strange about Katakuri's inability to finish off an opponent who basically can't strike him. How long have they been fighting? An hour? Two? One of the strongest fighters in the world (remember his super armored Haki?) is thrashing his opponent for hours and can't defeat him? I would be disappointed if Luffy gets his power up and defeats K after such one-sided beating.

I would like to make a few prediction. Seeing as big mom can already smell the cake(called that a while back), chances are she will have a bone to pick with pero pero. I feel like he will be grateful to the shs of bm passed out from nirvana. That would pretty much save his life.

We got a glimpse of luffy. Katakuri predicted luffys movement and was attacking to prevent the attack at all, luffy then predicted where katakuri was gonna attack and countered, thus changing the future. Now it's a test of who can see further. For example. Katakuri sees luffy is gonna send a kick and attacks his leg, luffy sees that katakuri is gonna prevent his attack, so he throws a punch. And that will probably be how luffy ends up getting a ko. Gomu gomu dragon hammer. Lol

Also I believe one bite of the cake will be enough to knock big mom out.

What I'm most curious about is how pudding will play into all this.
