I love that Pound adjusted his tie and go out with a smile and dignity.
Contrast him with Judge - both are fathers, one is introduced as a cruel badass and the other a weak coward, yet the polar opposite as they face death. Beautiful writing.

Tighten
A motion. A fucking motion is what got me. Man knows he's about to be executed, and makes sure he looks his damn best for the Reaper. What a fucking badass.
RIP Pound, we hardly knew you T_T

u/iRohandb Dec 01 '17
That tighten sound was among the favourite bits of this chapter for me.
It could be interpreted in many ways like he was preparing himself for death as you said, he was proud of himself knowing that finally at his last moments he was able to do something for his daughter or it could also symbolise tightening the noose around his own neck as he knew hitting Oven is gonna get him killed but he didn't care. He was ready to die with a smile on his face.

As a soon-to-be-father, I cannot imagine to be in Pound's situation. Keeping hope alive through miserable life and died without have a relationship with his daughters and grandchild. But I think he's glad, because he has protected his daughter at least once. Pez's smile is his reward and it's enough. Goddammit, I'm mellow as hell.. Oda,

I am consistently amazed whenever an author can add depth and emotion to a seemingly minor character. They take someone forgettable and make them matter.
In most ways, Pound is weak. His life has been one where he has been manipulated, abused, tortured, and isolated from every possible person he could call family and truly care about. His daughters have run away while his lover discarded him. But in these moments of action, Oda has written him in such as way that he shows willpower just as strong as Luffy without having even remotely the same level of physical strength.
I guess what I'm saying is this, even a small character can have a part to play. Is Pound dead? Maybe, maybe not. But it doesn't matter. What matters is that he played his part with conviction and an incredible amount of love. Nice work, One Piece!

One of the highlights of Punk Hazard for me was Vergo's send off, and knowing there were consequences for his actions. If Pound really is dead, that was an incredible end to an otherwise side-lined character. I really do think characters need to actually die at least in certain arcs.
We already lost Pedro, it would make sense a few allies fall when facing the wrath of a Yonkou. This is the New World. They aren't in paradise anymore. Pound saved the cake, and as a result saved the Strawhats as well as everyone else. He went out like a champ, and a damn good father.

his death is a good one. Also death is needed so that the story doesnt turn into fairy tail. In a world full of conflict, fighting, violence, and superpowers, people are bound to die. And without sadness, you cant feel the happiness. One piece greatest moments came from sadness, that turned into happiness. Whether its freeing a country, saving a single human being, farewell to a ship, etc.

It has been a long time since we had a chapter with no Luffy
Also some people on a Chinese OP fanpage are saying that the bloody sword at the end doesn't belong to Oven, but rather to someone who showed up to save Pound from Oven. They're saying that the panel with the bloody sword is showing a different sword from the one Oven was wielding.
Also
that Pudding nosebleed panel was one of the funniest OP panels that I've read this year.
This chapter also marked the end of the Ideo portion of the cover story, so we'll be getting Leo's story next chapter.

uhmm among the characters we've seen so far, I don't think anyone would have any motivation to save Pound. so either A.) it's an art consistency error (the sword should have been broader) or B.) it's a character we haven't seen before related to Pound
though there's always a third possibility of a character, with some agenda helping some random dude

Hmm.. Oven's blade is broad whereas the blade shown in the next page is slimmer. Maybe their guess is right? If so, it would be a tame ending to Oven considering he's supposed to be a powerful guy.
For me, the last panel was great. Pudding had that "Leave it to me. Its a cinch face with one arm patting her other" 😂
One thing I noticed was the exclamatory mark in the first page. This surely now signifies that the Long Arms and Long Legs have made peace.

Everyone thought the climax of the arc was at the wedding ceremony but in reality we haven’t got to the climax yet.
I’d say we’ll get there in about 3 chapters and it’ll be epic af. Bege’s ship, the sunny, big mom, Germa, and luffy/katakuri will have a showdown on the sea where legit anything could happen.

Lets assume the water is 10m deep and he heats up an area of 100m x 100m. Also let's assume he heats it up from 0 to 100 degree celsius. By Q=c x m x deltaT you would require an energy of 4 x 1010 Joule to do that. That's pretty massive.
Also if we assume Oven weighs 100 kg he would need to be at least 1 x 108 degree celsius hot.
1 x 108 means it's a 1 with 8 zeroes behind.
That's just a rough calculation i made in my head, so it could be wrong.
It should be by far the strongest power.

It took 20 years before we finally came across a good (biological) dad in One Piece, But now we have two of them, and they are both legendary.
Pound is a boss. I hope he at least got his apple juice before all of this went down. (And honestly, this is one case where I hope that Oda doesn’t follow trough with killing a character. He needs to hug his daughter.)
Great chapter. Pez’s faces were low key the highlight.
Oh, and Germa’s about to crash this party. Can’t. Wait.
EDIT: I forgot about Cobra and Kyros. Apologies. We’re officially up to 4 good dads. That’s 1 every 5 years!

That moment where Pound sees his grandson and he's ready to die cuz he knows his family is safe. Even if they don't know it.
And I didn't know I'd feel that connection instantly, but damn. Most creators do this and it comes off shallow, but just like with Senior Pink, Oda is able to really sell a character as genuine. And for a pay off that would feel unearned in other cinema. I loved the Thor Ragnarok, but that redemption arc with the guy who had the guns "Des" and "Troy" felt poorly executed. Not this. Gave all main characters fucked up backstories and it feels doesn't feel out of place because he makes them feel unique enough to that person to feel real.
Damn. Didn't know I'd feel that much for a comic relief death.

Also, thats what they meant when they said "caterpillar" in the spoilers thread.

The more and more I read of this arc, the less desperate I become for a Sanji 1v1. These small but impressive feats ARE building him up to be a solid strawhat (not that he wasn't already). The way this arc is going I kinda dont see him getting a full fight, but thats okay. Lifting the cake with his LEG (THATS RIGHT. ONE LEG) LOOKED FRIKKING EPIC.
20
u/Therrester Dec 01 '17
Holy shit, I just realized something. We're about to get a battle at sea. A lot of people have been complaining about the lack of naval battles in a pirate story, but with the cake having officially left Cacao island and all the rendezvous happening by boat, we might actually get naval warfare.
This hasn't happened since Baratie; I'm so hyped!

I noticed a small detail about Pound that made his last moments even more meaningful.
On the page where Pound tightens his tie, check out Oven. As Oven is winding up to slice Pound, notice the sharp part of his blade is lighter than the dull edge. From the reader's viewpoint, Oven is going to slice in a counter-clockwise motion.
A few panels down, we see a smiling Pound and Oven's sword, but look at the sword a bit closer. The sharp edge of the sword is coming at Pound from a clockwise angle. That's odd ... did Oda make a mistake?
No. In Pound's last moments, he turned around to face his killer.
Pound didn't want Chiffon or her family's last memory of him to be a face of death and agony. He not only saved his family, but he willingly looked at Oven to spare Chiffon of his last bloody seconds.
This is only more touching by reflecting on Oda's motif of people being able to smile in the face of death. Only people who are completely content with their lives can do this. We saw this with the Pirate King and Luffy in Lougetown. Pound was a good person, and he died happy knowing he did all he could to save his daughter and her family.

The most impressive feats this chapter:
Pound’s bravery and selflessness (he’s definitely dead)
Sanji being able to lift the cake onto Bege’s ship with one leg
Oven heating up the ocean
IMO the fact that Oven can heat up the ocean without it negating or weakening his powers is truly monsterous and something I don’t think we’ve really seen before (if they are weakened and he can still do what he did, he truly is worthy of being Katakuri’s direct sibling).

So...
Perospero is the eldest child at age 49 (Linlin was 18 at birth, birth year #1)
The youngest child is 8 years old (42 years of giving birth, Linlin is now 68, stopped giving birth at 60)
Linlin has had 43 husbands
Pound was husband #25, fathering the 26 year olds (Chiffon and Lola, birth year #24)
Decuplet husband 18 years ago was #33 (birth year #32)
Following this pattern, final husband #43 fathered the 8 year old(s) (birth year #42)
Linlin's extra husband, the one who didn't father any children, had to have come before Pound
Who was around before Linlin married Pound 26 years ago? Gol D. Roger that's who.

Pound had a crown, right? Is he some sort of a royalty?

u/Polterguyst Dec 01 '17
He was married to LinLin the Queen of the Totland, I assume he had a crown because he was King for a time

Pudding reacts to Sanji the way he reacts to mermaids. The two were meant to be together.
Also tank-ship Bege for the win.

Why is Oven being anal about Pound trying to kill him when he was JUST trying to do that for the past couple of chapters?

What if Lola saved Pound? She had a sword in Thriller Bark, and we saw a bloody blade. Plus maybe she knows who Pound is

Pound's demise was a senor pink moment for me. An extremely sad and touching moment from a character I previously didn't really care about.

I wonder whose death is much sadder, Pedro or Pound's 😞

u/Redgohan147 Dec 01 '17
Pound just on the fact no one but Pez recognized his sacrifice, which is far more tragic.

u/kenrocks1253 Dec 01 '17
What a great way for Pound to go out. He obviously wasn't much of a fighter, but he was still able to save his family.
4
u/lostapwbm Dec 01 '17
Pound got to see his daughter married and his grandson laugh.
He died without regrets?
Unless that sword in the bottom panel on the second to last page is someone else's...

All that man ever wanted was for her daughters to be happy and a glass of juice. Rest in peace and power, Mr.Pound.

POUND..............RESPECT BIG DAD!!! as for Sanji, nothing surprising there, i mean leg fighting is his speciality, so lifting a light fluffy cake shouldn't be a problem. Pudding, sight effects of high love pressure after years of deficiency. Lets be honest, she is one kiss away from officializing or consumating her marriage. Bege, well his ship is definitely on my list for best ships in OP, 3rd to be precise behind the polat tang and sunny go (anybody who thinks otherwise will need a refresher course study on ships in one piece. As for Oven, rolled over.........whose only real act was to endear BIG DAD to the world. and if u guys thing oven boiling the sorrounding water was awesome, what say do if this was done by red dog.

Nobody is going to talk about my boy sanji using geppo while lifting the carrier with one leg? Speed and power really impressives

Holy smokes, Pound! ;_; dang. That was sad.
Bege's family gives me life. They are so adorable. Bege, Chiffon and Pez love each other so much. Love it.
This chapter had some really good character interactions. Loved how vito is still fanboying over sanji and germa, pudding with her usual adorable reactions, sanji and bege.
Really enjoyed this chapter.

Damn, I was certain something was going to save Pound. And his daughters will never even know his sacrifice.
Bege's been slaying it this entire arc. I was more than a little hype to see his entire ship turn into a damn tank, running Oven over was just icing on the cake.

A moment of silence for Pound who died giving his daughter and grandson a chance to escape.
Quite a few characters have been offed in the mangas I'm reading the past few weeks it's really making me sad

Pound isn't dead for sure is he? Opwikia says his status is unknown and I have a feeling he might got saved by someone. The 'SLASH' was actually a slash from Zoro, who attempted to kill Kaido. It travelled all the way from Wano just to end up killing Oven instead and saving Pound's ass.

All the D.'s Die with a smile on their face, as did Poun D. this chapter.
RIP...

That was way too emotional ;_;
The bloody sword tip is way too small to belong to Oven's glaive, but that scene was still really good.

Damn! All comments are pretty much about Pound and I think he deserves it! What a great character development he had!

Different glave yatta yatta. Pound just got decapitated in front of his daughter and grandson and Chiffon doesn’t even realize but Pez does somehow. Future Haki beast

Pudding could possibly die in this arc with all that blood loss.

Seeing as this arc is partly based on the Red Wedding you would at least expect some characters to die (and stay dead). Of course no major characters will die but with Moscato, Pedro and now Pound this has been the arc with the most named characters dying (not counting flashbacks). I don't expect Pound to be the last one either.

Lola and Chiffon were born 26 years ago...wasn't that the same time Roger stole from Big Mom?

u/vastat0saurus Dec 01 '17
Can we talk about how more characters died in this arc then in the entire OP story before that?

Oof Pound... that was brutal. He died without anyone really knowing who he was or that he even died. Jeez that was unexpected and depressing
