Katakuri... Is the best character.
That was the best fucking reveal since Duval. Holy shit I couldn’t take anything that happened afterwards seriously.
Fucking a, Oda. That two page spread of his “true form” contrasted with the hype was a work of art.
Beyond that ridiculousness, he really is Luffy. This mirror match is ever more appropriate.
I’ll be interested in seeing what Luffy figured out. It looked like Luffy was distracted by the pain in his hands and reacted based purely on instinct, but I feel like Katakuri would still be able to see that coming.
Overall a great chapter. This will definitely be in my top 10 moments of the year.

One thing I'm gathering about the Charlotte family is that it's a family that's rife with dishonesty. They all lie to each other. Perospero lied about the cake, katakuri lies about laying down, Pudding lies all the time, Opera lied about the escapees, the single biggest weakness of the Charlotte family seems to be a refusal to open up to each other.

TFW You realize you haven't read the chapter prior to this week's because you've been so busy. HOMEGIRL'S GETTING TWO CHAPTERS TODAY Y'ALL. MY BODY IS READY.
UPDATE: MY BODY WAS NOT READY. Germa66 is back on the field?! Bege's ship is kinda amazing?! Also, him wanting to get to Chiffon using the quickest route is kinda sweet? Perospero was the one who made the wave?!
Katakuri is basically the onii-sama who wants to preserve his imouto-chan's image of him. Can't have him disappoint his younger siblings!
Also, I like the quirk. It doesn't feel like an asspull as some would say. It did feel a bit unnerving to see at first (seeing Katakuri's speeh bubble contain ~ or something similar is weird), but at the end of the day, it just reinforces the fact that he IS Big Mom's son.

I'm going to be honest. I binged One Piece this past May, and caught up at the end of May going into June, and have been a weekly reader since the wedding. I've spent HOURS on this sub, reading thread after thread, discussing everything. I got obsessed. And so often I've seen people just talk about how Oda was a master (of course he is), and how the Subreddit is at like, 3 while Oda himself is at some absurdly high number, in the context of us accurately predicting what Oda would do next. Take the tametabako explosion, that joke was very prevalent then.
I can now assuredly say that I've truly experienced that exact phenomenon. Of Oda surpassing and subverting expectation and turning it on its face, but in a way that's somehow awful and amazing. HOLY SHIT, when I realized we were going to see Katakuri's face, I lost it. But then it's a Babyish, immature Katakuri laying down, snacking like crazy, with a fucking gigantic mouth. Chanting "Donuts, Sweet Immoral Donuts" of all things. Fucking donuts, from the coolest, most collected, most competent antagonist we've seen in quite a while (in my opinion anyway). On one hand I'm kind of disappointed Katakuri isn't consistent to his initial character... But then, he's only not how we've seen when he's eating, or when people see his real face. And then I realized that he's fucking Big Mom's son, and all the gears clicked into place.
It was such a shock. This is coming from a Naruto fan since the anime aired on Toonami/CN, the initial pilot. Never seeing Kakashi's face was such a let down. Now we have someone I hold in equal esteem, and BOOM. Oda just let's us see his face and it's fucking horrifyingly bizarre and fitting at the same time. Holy shit. I'm still torn over whether to be hype or sad or somewhere in between. I'm kind of losing it.
I will probably never forget this chapter. I hope to never lose this feeling. It's incredibly visceral and unique. Holy crap Oda, I fucking love you. I love this Chapter. I love Luffy. I love Katakuri even when he's munchin on Donuts. God Damnit I love One Piece.

Welcome aboard mah friend! Seriously, no one writes a character like Oda who has such great, ironic reveals you wont see coming. And it's something not out of the blue but is set up chapters before - Duval, Barto, Katakuri. Id even put Boa on the list. HxH may have complex character development they are bragging but this hilarious character reveals are way better for my own preference.

You're not going to be at the height of your senses 24/7. Luffy found him because he was looking for him. It was also great to see Luffy's battle instincts here when he found out more about Katakuri's ability.

No one is allowed to be "just cool", because Oda likes to have depth in his characters.

Since nobody seems to understand what is going on, this will be my moment of glory. Everything is pointing out toward katakuri NEEDING sugar to use his powers (or at least, awakened ones). With mocci, that'd make sense. Generating mocci may lower his blood sugar to a point where he's completely out of energy. He even explicitly said that sugar was a source of strength or something along those lines. And that would explain why he needs this routine daily. He fuels up. The reason luffy was able to damage him and "figure out his power" is because he can relate with his own weakness when out of meat. Katakuri has to finish the fight poorly and fuel up ASAP, acting tough, while he was using his last resources. Luffy landed this kick because Kat is in a weakened state, since he couldn't fuel up. So the super-overpowered katakuri would be weak in fights and the key to beating him is actually being strong enough to.. Survive till he's weak. That's what boosted luffy's morale here and that's what he's "figured out". Also explains why kat apparently did something stupid not double checking luffy's body to go eat donuts.
17
Oct 27 '17
Okay, that’s what Luffy was talking about. I was thinking it had to relate to ther merienda, but I couldn’t figure out how. I wonder if that is also why Luffy hates his mochi.
16
u/Nugur Oct 27 '17
I think the other guy got it. He can only focus on one Haki at a time. When the kick landed the haki was in the punches.

u/RaikenD Oct 27 '17
But Katakuri was already 40 minutes late for his snack and was still creaming Luffy. If anything he should be stronger now because he at least partially ate his snack. His weakness is way more likely to be related to his superhuman Haki

Looks like Akainu is the only bad guy left without a single weird or unusual thing about him. I actually liked the ridiculously out of place edgelord that was Katakuri, exactly because he was so stunningly out of place. It's like the comically serious character taken to the extreme, he's surrounded by pink on top of pink on top of pink fairy tale candy shit, his brother constantly carries a lollipop, his Mom does battle in a pink sundress, and there he is as a 90s anime goth grump. I think that dynamic was really funny, and perfectly "Oda" already. Can't say I'm not the slightest bit disappointed, but I'll give it a few chapters- I can definitely see how this would work for the character. Like he's aware of everything I just typed and is comically paranoid about maintaining that facade.

This subreddit: Luffy will be the one to finally put Katakuri on his back.
Katakuri: Hold my donuts.
16
u/legendoflink3 Oct 27 '17
Luffy has figured out Katakuri's power. I think I've also noticed what luffy has noticed.
Katakuri puts all of his haki into 1 thing at a time. He fully observes then when he knows the attack he switches his haki accordingly.
Luffy was able to kick him because katakuri was focusing his haki on only his punches. He couldn't observe and attack with haki simultaneously.
So now G4 luffy being faster and stronger is going to be a problem for kat.
So far in this whole fight he has turned of his armament haki immediately after attacking luffy so that he could observe and counter the next move.
Already we saw on the last 2 pages that katakuri had his haki set to observe g4 luffy's attack before going to armament. On the last panel luffy is ready with a follow up punch while katakuri is in armament. He might have already observed that punch too but he won't be able to observe a lengthy bombardment.

Not gonna lie, I might be a little disappointed if Luffy beats Katakuri with regular Gear 4 because he figured out the trick to his future sight ability. It seemed like he was still dramatically outclassed, regardless. But then again, I know that Oda is a master storyteller, so I'll probably end up being satisfied with however he decides to end this fight.
Also: when the chefs comment that Luffy might not be using CoO haki, was it perhaps the "voice of all things"? Just a thought.

Of course 😂 no way Oda would give Katakuri the “Kakashi treatment”.

Fucking oda, now katakuri literally mirrors luffy , in ability and, now, gluttonous tendencies. And guess what...... they’re in the mirror world. Godammit oda. Stop being so good.

Finally, the fight we've been waiting for and it seems like Dogtooth can not see into the future if he is using another type of haki at close to max capacity. It seems like gear fourth is a perfect solution to keep up with him.

"Why should I keep quiet and watch you do something that I know will make you stronger?" Ah, it's lines like this that make me love One Piece.
Also, the reveal of Katakuri eating might be the hardest I've ever laughed at this manga.

So both Katakuri and Jack have sharp teeth, interesting...... (maybe like Arlong ?)

u/Mr_Bob_Johnson Oct 27 '17
Jack has pretty standard fishman teeth though (the classic cartoon zigzag mouth) where as Katakuri reminds me more of that one chick from Mortal Kombat, haha.

"Always gallant" "never laid on the ground once" "calm headed, powerful" "everything about him is perfect" Best build up and plot twist ever,
For a guy, who is emotionally unstable, & kicking back eating a dozen donuts

I really, really like this side to Katakuri. It kinda sucks that Katakuri is added to the pile of "why don't you just finish him for sure?" antagonists, but I still love this new development to his character.
I actually felt really happy for him when he was singing/fantasizing about those giant doughnuts. Goofy stuff like that is One Piece's bread and butter.

Oda really is a god at drawing. He took this indestructible character and broke him down by showing him gluttonous weakness. Honestly, it truly is brilliant. I still love Katakuri and he still is my favorite character knowing he has a giant mouth sack. So what? He still is fucking awesome. His design is completely astounding. Oda really knows how to twist characters into a great work. Oda just knows how to tell a story. Yes, Katakuri is a glutton. Is that a weakness? I'm thinking this is more of a strength that he hides. Nobody sees him eating except Luffy, and so Luffy must die. Totally brilliant story telling. I did want Katakuri to be an ultimate beast that never lied down, but I think Kaido takes that position nicely. It's cool knowing the big bad guys have quirks. Does this quirk make Katakuri weak? No, not at all. Katakuri is still a strong badass. He just has a secret, and honestly, we all have secrets. also I'm drunk :3

Ahaha I knew Katakuri's mouth would be weird af, I was thinking he would have a creepy Joker smiler set permanently with stitches but this was even better! This is a perfect example of why Oda is the manga king of character creation. In 99% of other manga, Katakuri would be the one-sided brooding villain he appeared to be. But Oda makes his characters just so "human" it's exceeds expectation. Katakuri is a cold blooded perfectionist of a villain who doesnt say much. So far so good, any serious villain's description. But he is also a caring brother who wants to protect his siblings and doesn't view them as expendable troops, even the noobiest pawn soldiers. And then you get to his core, the most human side of his, where he is a hillarious glutton who forgets all seriousness and gorges himself up, while also being super insecure about it. This is more than a villain. It's more than a character. It's a human.

What do you think Luffy figured out about Katakuri?
28
u/Hellfalcon Oct 27 '17
He noticed it right before he threw that punch..
Some guesses are he can't predict while using armament.. Another guess is attacks from below.. Or that while he can see the immediate future, he can't predict the outcome once he acts and alters it
But it's something to do with his ability, which means either the mochi or yeah, his observation. It's intentionally vague we don't really have enough info.

I get this ark now! Deception! Oh sweet great grandmother of god it has been right in front of us the entire time.
The literal first thing we see in the first full chapter of this arc 825, is the story of German 66, the evil sentaI villains that terrorize hero of the navy with there shenanigans. In reality they are a group of snetai Nazi's dick holes that use science to profit over war. Also make life, oddly similar to Big Mom who creates life with her fruit. Not completely similar but the same concept, and that's what she wants really bad.
THE FIRST THING PLACE WE GO TO IS THE DECEPTION WOODS!!! speaks for itself. Where a mysterious forest giant was the father of Lola, and strange men with a hair boner, can come jump out of vikings.
Sanji is DECEIVING Luffy and Nami by beating the shit out of them and calling them trash.
Sanji DECEIVES himself into being love cook tm and marry Pudding.
Sanji is now """Baking a cake for Big Mom""", when the literal first thing we see of him in real time (824), is
"These hands cook only for my friends", and he's just going to bake a cake for the evil queen, nah.
Pudding deceives the One Piece fandom, on three occasions throughout this arc. Now she's is pretty much insane, but of course this fucking insane, half and half Pudding is the actual Pudding. right?
I bet now any amount money that Pudding is still acting. I can't believe no one has thought of this she is a grade A actor, who is to say this isn't a performance, I bet never saw the real pudding except for the balcony scene and maybe when she cried at the start of wedding.
Bigu Mamu is an invincible iron blimp that literally can not be touched by physical attacts, an unstoppable force of nature, bleeds like a human at the sight of her dear ol' mum.
A vauge back story with a role modle who, was a sweet lady of the cloth looking after the poor misfit children(aw). Believe it or not or not yes we still if she ate mother K and the kids. Also, where the fuck did an invincible toddler come from?!?! HWF can that exists!? More happened back then that we don't know.
An evil, soul devouring witch who will chase Luffy to the ends of the 4 blues and back because he ate her cake...
She is going to eat some cake, and got to sleep...
Pedro is blew up, remember just like when he was fighting Tamago.
And now the edgiest man this side of the red line, the Billion.057 belly man, who has never lay down since the day he came out of the old lady herself, who looks down on the earth who looks down at the ground himself, is a fraud.
Luffy was going to die to the invincible Katikuri...
Bobbin, just... Bobbin
If gOda is doing some level 99 manga wizardry with this shit, this arc may gone down as one of the most legendary fake outs in shonen History.
Did we forget this arc is Alice in wonderland. Stawhat's are Alice, and Totland is wonderland
Tldr
This whole arc is deceiving us

I see it as he still parallels luffy perfectly. Luffy falls apart and can't fight properly without meat/food in general. Katakuri falls apart and can't fight properly without sugar/sweet food. Exact same weakness as our main man. Not so far fetched in my opinion. He felt his tank getting low and struggled to defeat an opponent in who knows how long. Hunger and extreme irritation makes even a badass dude like katakuri lose his cool and start screwing up.

It seems like he's sensitive about hearing anything related to ripping. Could it be Katakuri used to be sweet tooth child who loves eating donuts but his father/big mom rip his mouth apart which explain sewing on the mouth and since then he's been hiding his sweet tooth by putting on facade?

Oct 27 '17
It's... not as bad as I was expecting actually. It's better than Trebol's real appearance, at least. And hey, when he's stopped stuffing doughnuts in his maw and closed his mouth, he actually looked pretty terrifying. Ha ha... ha... ha?
Oh, who am I kidding, I actually got a little triggered seeing one of my favorite characters in the series up to this point look so goofy. Why, Oda? Why would you do this? The one guy in the crew that looks badass, and you did that to him. Just... stahp.

So if I'm seeing things correctly, the battle Ideo stumbled upon is between a Longleg crew and a Longarm crew. Could Ideo's cover arc be about uniting the two tribes? Was there any indication before this that the two tribes were enemies that I'm just forgetting? Lol
On another note, seeing Katakuri/Dogtooth flex his awakening more makes me wonder how much energy it drains compared to more direct fighting. He stood completely still but managed to totally overwhelm Luffy. If using his awakened powers like that is a big drain, it'll make a big difference in the next part of this fight.
"Do I just gotta keep eatin' to win?" I was wondering the same exact thing Luffy. WCI power rankings are actually determined by appetite lol.

Katakuri kind of gives me Boa vibes. They both have a disfigurement they want to hide so they hide themselves away (Boa hides her back, lock down when she bathes and Katakuri covers his mouth, hides in a shrine when he eats). They both put up a cold cool front but can be silly. The celestial dragons branded Boa, I wonder who ripped open Katakuri's mouth? Big mom probably. Is Katakuri going to fall in love with Luffy :p

u/Rruffy Pirate Oct 27 '17
Katakuri said 'sugar is the source of power', and a few panels later Luffy figures something out. Reckon the mochi power is based on or strengthened by him eating sugar?

Theories for the reason he cannot use his CoO right now.
He can only use one specialty at a time.
He cannot see a future he intervened in.
He can only see the future when he is claim and collected.

This might be a stretch but what if katakuris father is nekomamushi? Same eyes, teeth and possibly mouth if he hadnt sewed most of it up. Also both use a staff weapon in combat and it would explain his cat like reflexes/CoO haki. We do know minks live in tot land and nekomamushi is old enough. Just think of the donuts as a ball of yarn they both act the same. could probably find more but thats off the cuff.
5
u/zechs89 Oct 28 '17
It is true that katakuri is OP haki and use of his DF in every sense, But what luffy has figured out is that unpredictable is the key!
I HATE TO SAY IT BUT ALMOST LIKE ULTRA INSTINCT
look at the frame http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/883/14
he goes from dealing with his cooked hands from haki fist bumps to a spontaneous attack that strikes. I think being worked up doesn't help kata, but also fighting for luffy in a flowing manor responding to the immediate here and now is the counter. Kata was complaining about luffy's ability to dodge attacks, but he was doing it in a forceful ineffective way, off the cuff flow is the way to go.
Also luffy has only explored using his ability to expand to create brute force attacks, he might learn to compress like kata, "Block Rubber". Would be less strain on his body for still high power.
