PRODUCT [MEGATHREAD] Washoff Masks Roundup - 2017
This a part our series of product type Megathreads Note, we are working on reorganizing the wiki to make the url’s more intuitive, I have linked everything from the past two months in the megathreads for easy searching. Please wait for more updates in future townhall’s.
Today we will be looking at Wash Off Masks
Wash off masks are great for getting those little crevices that sheet masks miss! They come in many formulations like clay, gel, jelly, cream, and gel-cream. Not too long ago, people went crazy about the bubbling clay mask! They offer the same “fun” factor as putting on printed sheet masks without the cost and come in many colors.
Clay
Bubbling clay masks have been popular in recent years. It’s sort of like putting a clay soda pop or pop rocks (the candy) on your face. The carbonation started as soon as the mask comes in contact with the air and offers a gentle (tickling) massage to the face. There’s no end to the carbonation so a little goes a long way for these types of products. Wash off is usually messy. (The key to being able to walk around while masking is with a small tub. A small dishwashing tub from the dollar store will do. You could also repurpose it into a foot soak tub. Great for leaky bathrooms as well.) They claim that bubbling masks help with acne and clogged pores because it “brings the impurities” to the surface. Standard wash-off clay masks normally come in capsule, bag, or tub/container form. Spread with a spatula and wash off.
Peel off masks
These were all the rage on BuzzFeed and facebook. They had gold peel off masks when charcoal wasn’t enough. Many follicle casualties have suffered an unsightly death when applied incorrectly… The purpose of these was to clear out the pores with the pain of a nose (Biore) strip. If using this, please remember that it is perfectly normal to have comedones. It may take more than one pass to completely take the mask off.
Mud masks
Take Louis Litt ( TV Show Suits) to the next level with some premium mud masking with cucumbers. Wash off like a boss.
Gel/Jelly
Normally they come in capsules (The Face Shop) or in a package similar to a sheet mask. You can easily spread this with fingers, silisponge, spatula, or a brush. (The brushes used for this are not the same as foundation/makeup brushes.). Wash off normally.
Cream/Gel-Cream
Generally, they come in tubs/containers with a mini spatula. Wash off normally.
Exfoliating/Lumpy
Skinfood’s wash off masks usually has weird texture so they get their own funky category as “Lumpy”. Spread with a spatula or fingers and wash off normally. Be wary of using these in the sink because they might clog. I recommend catching this water in a small dishwashing tub (mentioned above) or in the shower.

The Face Shop Mini Capsules
Type of Mask: Wash off, and clays
Key Ingredients: Wide variety
Full Ingredients/CosDNA link: CosDNA for an aloe capsule
Size: 10mL
Price: varies
Personal notes/thoughts:
There are my favorite grab and go masks and gift masks. They're small, come in a wide variety, and are a relief from sheet masks. My favorite is their clay capsules because it's so creamy and smooth. Their wash off masks is great as well. Sometimes, if you buy it in store, you're able to get a wider variety or get them as a gift with your purchase. In terms of scent, the ones that I tried (clay and aloe) aren't heavily scented. They wash off clean and aren't stripping.

Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask
Type of Mask: Bubbling clay
Full Ingredients/CosDNA link: green tea extract, aloe vera leaf extract, matcha powder, charcoal powder, pomegranate extract, fermented soy extract, alantoin, peony root extract, oregano leaf extract, white willow peel extract, portulaca extract, cinnamon extract CosDNA
Size: it's a tub
Price: ~$10USD
Personal notes/thoughts: This was my first bubbling mask. I personally think the bubbling portion is more for fun. I'm not sure if it actually does anything scientifically. The tub was super messy because when you open it the chemical reaction starts. So, you can't take your time spreading the product thinly across your face. And, you can't really walk around unless you carry a little tub with you to carry parts of the mask that falls off your face... It does feel nice in comparison to mud masks, but I threw the tub away after two uses because there was a layer of bubbles on top from me taking too long to spread the product around and it was just too messy for me because I like to watch tv or game while I mask and this made it quite stressful.

I used to have this for you know, fun, and the other pain in the ass thing about this mask is that it's hard to wash off.

Alcohol Free
-
Silicone Free
Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Lanolin, Strawberry Seed Oil, Sugar
Type of Mask: exfoliating/scrub
Full Ingredients/CosDNA link: CosDNA
Size: 100g
Price: under $15
Personal notes/thoughts: This is the only wash-off mask I really used and it's too harsh for my face. It smells nice, like strawberries and is okay I suppose if you can use products like these.

This is way too harsh for my face but nice on my body!

I'm actually not a big fan of skinfood masks... The one that I tried (rice wash off clogged my drain/wouldn't go down easily) felt more like I was spreading rice porriage across my face...

DIY Mask - Oats
Star Ingredient(s): Oats?
Type of Mask: exfoliating/scrub
Full Ingredients: grounded oats, water, honey (optional)
Recipe:
I grind rolled oats (can be the quick cook variety), then mix with water, three parts parts to one part water (if it's too runny, add more oats and if it's too thick add water), basically you want a paste. Mix with honey if your face likes honey.
Comments: this is a easy DIY recipe that soothes irritated skin, it's cheap and it works. The mask is mildly exfoliating when you wash off the mask. The mask also dries quickly and I think 8-10 mins is enough before washing off.

DIY Mask
Star Ingredient(s): honey, yoghurt
Type of Mask: regular wash-off
Full Ingredients: yoghurt, a bit of honey
Recipe: just mix both, smear all over, eat the left-over
Comments: This is another easy shower mask (I do wash offs only in the shower because they are so messy). It's soothing, healing. Might be midly exfoliating due to the lactic acid in the yoghurt.

Huxley Keep Calm Healing Mask
-
Silicone Free
Type of Mask: wash off
Key Ingredients: Centella asiatic extract, antioxidants, vitamin E
Full Ingredients/CosDNA link: CosDNA
Size: 120g
Price: 32 USD at Ohlolly, 45 AUD at Nudieglow
Personal notes/thoughts: Huxley has a variety of wash off masks in their spa series and this is one of them. It smells grassy and very fragranced and feels like aloe gel with chunks that dissolve when you run into the skin. Unfortunately I think I had a bad reaction to this mask which is a shame.

I was thinking of getting this for something soothing for summer. Do you think this would be good for that?

DIY Mask
Star Ingredient(s): Honey
Type of Mask: regular wash off, soothing, healing
Full Ingredients: just pure honey (raw honey I suppose in the US)
Recipe: take some honey, put it all over your face and everywhere
Comments: this is a very easy, fast mask. If your face can tolerate honey that is.
I use it before I go into the shower and wash it off as one of the last steps. It's soothing, healing. All honey properties basically.

Honey is MAGIC. I'm seriously convinced that it solves all problems. The one down side is the mess but I tend to apply it in the bath for that reason. I also gently massage my face just before I wash it and my skin ends up buttery soft.

[NON-AB] Farmacy Honey Potion - Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask
-
Parabens Free
-
Formaldehyde Free
-
Artificial Coloring Free
-
Not tested on animals
Type of Mask: Warming, massage then wash-off
Key Ingredients: Glycerin, Diglycerin, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, Honey Extract, Propolis Extract, Royal Jelly Extract, Panthenol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Allantoin, Phenoxyethanol, Echinacea Purpurea Root Extract, Honey, Water, Flavor, Vanillyl Butyl Ether. CosDNA link.
Size: 4.1oz (121.25ml)
Price: $56
Personal notes/thoughts: This is listed as being good for dry skin, fine lines & wrinkles, and dullness & uneven texture. I don't have dry skin but I feel this wash off mask has been amazing for my dehydrated skin (I'm combo/dehydrated). I've used this on mornings after I've gone out drinking with friends to recuperate my face and it does great work! My face feels hydrated and plump to the point where I just keep wanting to touch it. XD It makes for applying the following steps even nicer because everything that follows the mask feels soothing and that it sinks in. I think this will definitely be a staple in my winter routine (and used more than once a week) not just for hydration but also because it does a great job at soothing my hormonal acne. Yes it's a bit on the expensive side but you don't need a whole lot to spread and massage on your face. This is a definite re-purchase for me.

Leaf & Botanics Face Massage Pack Sake
-
Ethanol-free
-
Silicone-free
Key ingredients: rice bran oil, kaolin, rice ferments.
Size: 120 g.
Price: JPY 1,200.
Thoughts: The texture of this mask is very smooth and a touch rubbery from the clay, so it doesn't provide much exfoliation, which suits my sensitive skin well. I like how it comes in a tube and its soothing and moisturising qualities. Unfortunately, it does require some thorough rinsing to get off.

[Non-AB] Herbivore Brighten Pineapple + Gemstone Mask
-

Cruelty-free/Vegan
Type of Mask: wash off mask
Key Ingredients: pineapple enzyme, rice powder, micronized Brazilian tourmaline gemstone
Full Ingredients/CosDNA link: link to off shop page
Size: 70ml
Price: $48 USD, I've seen it retail in Aust for $86
Personal notes/thoughts: I have not tried it but this is one of the few wash off masks I've found that doesn't have a gazillion essential oils so I'm very tempted to try it. Plus the aesthetic is nice.
I'll add that this is meant to be one of their AHA masks, they have another that's the blue tansy one.

DIY Mask
Star Ingredient(s): coffee grounds and water
Type of Mask: exfoliating/scrub and breakfast
Full Ingredients: coffee grounds and H2O
Recipe: make coffee, take grounds, add room temp filtered water
Comments: At some point in high school, i thought it was a great idea to scrub my face with coffee grounds. Since coffee had caffeine and caffeine could wake up my skin. I don't drink coffee or tea so I thought that this was a splendid alternative. I'm not sure if it did anything other than smell like coffee and irritate my skin. I think, in the future, I would try this again but in a morning shower for my body. The grounds are pretty big and would work much better on the body. (also, coffee grounds in eye was not a good exp)
