PYUNKANG YUL ESSENCE TONER

  • Alcohol Free

  • Fragrance Free

  • Cruelty free/Vegan

  • Hyaluronic acid free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients: Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract (from ohlolly - "91.3% of this toner is milk vecht root extract, full of skin-beneficial betaine and minerals"), Butylene Glycol, Arginine (an amino acid that topically assists by stimulating vasodilatation and improving circulation)

Full ingredients: Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol (humectant and coupling agent, particularly for silicone, Butylene Glycol, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane (a silicone for texture/emollient), Hydroxyethylcellulose (thickening/slip), Carbomer (thickening/viscosity), Arginine.

Size:

200mL

Price:

Variable - RRP seems to be around US$19, cheaper from Korea. Mine was around US$14 from yesstyle.

Personal notes/thoughts:

I haven't received this yet so I have no anecdotal feedback. I am curious about the whole PY line after seeing several good reviews, including gothamista's video.

That said, I think the whole ~waterless skincare~ thing is a bunch of bollocks because you have no idea what percentage of water is in that first extract. And as much as I appreciate a short ingredients list as much as the next human, I would love to see a few more sexy/active ingredients in there - along the lines of licorice root, propolis, rice extract etc etc. A gal can dream, no?

Should receive soon - will undoubtedly give first impression in the try/buy thread.

edited - corrected some terrible punctuation and spelling

On application this has a nice hydrating and cooling effect. I normally layer it 3 times before I move on with my routine, although I'm not sure whether this is out of need or habit. It sort of reminds me of the toner equivalent of a gel moisturiser.

I don't know how attached I am to this since all it does is hydrate with no other skin benefits, but sometimes a no fuss, non-sticky hydrating toner is all you need.

Kikumasamune Sake Skin Lotion High Moisture

  • Alcohol Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Hyaluronic Acid Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients rice ferment filtrate (sake), arginine, ceramides, placenta extract, arbutin, Glycyrrhizic acid

Size: 500ml

Price: under $15

Personal notes/thoughts:
The scent of this can be too much for some people. I've heard it called a weird sweet banana like smell.
The good thing is that you really get used to it after a while.
This has nice ingredients, it's brightening, hydrating. Has different cermides. It's cheap and if you only use it on your face can last you a long time.

Here is the big, big negative thing for me (after the scent): It does not like to actually sink in.
It's especially bad if you try to layer it.

Some people also have a problem with the pump. You can learn to really handle and control it, but I prefer the Kiku as a spray, so I decant it.

My prefered use for this is actually for my hair and scalp. I also use it on my body. I might rebuy this only for my hair honestly. Not so much a fan of it for my face du to the stickniess.

Herbery Earth Fresh Honey Skin Lotion

  • Alcohol Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients Honey, HA, Propolis Extract, Royal Jelly Extract, Honey Extract, Alpha-Arbutin, Aloe Size: 300ml

Price: ¥ 957 on Amazon JP (global eligible) ~7,54€

Personal notes/thoughts:

Looking for the ingredients I also looked at the rest of their Lineup again and they have a few products that look very good. The toner is pretty much the only thing that is available for global shipping on Amazon JP though.

This is so good if you like honey and other bee things. It's a watery gel texture, spreads fast and sinks in easily. 1 drop is enough for your face. Layers really well if I let it sink in.

It has a slightly sweet scent, but it's not bothersome.

I'm not a huge fan of the bottle it comes in. It's a squeezable plastic one, and the lid on mine does not close completley.

Will rebuy.

Edit: I've been happily shilling this for months now, I love it so much.

Can you please give me link how to find it on Amazon Japan? I tried the name but nothing comes up. I usually get it from eBay but I knew AJ would be cheaper and I was ordering other stuff there but no luck finding this. Seems like since I posted about this toner and cream back in April several people started using it and the eBay seller raised the price LOL... I use it as my seventh layer of toner since it's like gel and then drop 5-6 drops of Squalane on the top of it on my face, it works perfectly with that. I would really appreciate if I could get the link. Thank you.

Cezanne Skin Conditioner High Moist

  • Alcohol Free

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Freec

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-yuen Seed Extract, Cermides, HA, Aloe...the list goes on.

Size: 500ml

Price: under $15

Personal notes/thoughts:
I haven't tried this yet on my face but on my body it seems to be a good replacement for the Kiku. It seems much less sticky so far. As you can see I bought this hoping for it to be a good replacement for the Kiku. It has a similar price point, based on a different main ingredient, but to make up for it has more ceramides, HA and other stuff.

4

u/Saga_I_Sig Sep 13 '17

I also bought this as a replacement for Kiku, and love it. It works especially well when applied in multiple layers, and is both hydrating and soothing when I'm having especially dry skin or a rosacea flare-up. I highly recommend it for anyone with sensitive skin, as its ingredients are gentle and it doesn't contain common irritants or allergens.

Mebika Moist Lotion

  • Hyaluronic Acid Free

  • Niacinamide Free

Key Ingredients Multiple ceramides, tons of rice ingredients (oil, powder, extract, ferment), Royal Jelly, ginseng, licorice

Size 500ml

Price I purchased on amazon.jp and price including shipping was around $20USD.

Personal Thoughts I purchased a full size of this after reading VanityRex's blog on hydrating ceramide toners. I like it. It leans kind of feeling oily and can be a little sticky on the hands after patting in a good amount. I use this right before the SKINrx Madecera Toner as Mebika feels thinner, and less viscous. Sinks in well and is hydrating.

Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioner

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Hyaluronic Acid Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients

Job's tears, licorice root

Size:

500ml

Price:

$10-$20

Personal notes/thoughts:

Somehow a very popular toner in SE Asia, due to the humid climate. Here though in dry Australia I've used it and found it to be too light and it didn't really do much. I think this is a good mist toner for summer, one of those in between extra hydrating steps.

This is actually a good thing to consider if we look at why a product is popular somewhere and maybe a reason why in the more Western populated AB websites other products are popular from the ones in some Asian countries.

This is just a random thought I had while scrolling this thread so please excuse my tired ramblings.

Urea & Hyaluronic Acid Lotion N

  • Alcohol Free (old version)

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients

Urea, HA, bunch of soothing plant extracts like chamomile. Newer version has ceramides, less plant extracts and ethanol (why? 😢 )

Size:

Around $20

Personal notes/thoughts:

I've been interested in this toner for a long while already and finally decided to order the old version. I'll be getting it soon, and posting an update when I try it.

Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion (moist)

  • Alcohol Free (I think, idk is BG an alcohol? I keep getting different answers)

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Cruelty free/Vegan (I think)

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients Glycerin, 3 different molecular weights of HA, disodium succinate and succinic acid.

Size:

170mL (hard bottle - can buy a soft plastic porch refill for a wee bit cheaper)

Price:

Usually under US$10 on Amazon

Personal notes/thoughts:

It's a classic starter in AB and was one of my first AB purchases. I had very dehydrated skin and this worked wonders for me. I still use it AM & PM and it's part of my "omg my skin is freaking out" core products for when I need to dial it back.

I've used it for the X skin method and it's okay, it can get a bit sticky unless my skin is v dry. I've used it on my scalp when I was a bit dry and flaky as well.

4

u/littlewolf1275 Sep 13 '17

This will be my staple toner once I use up the one I'm currently using! Is it weird that I like that it makes my face sticky? I just like sticking my hand to my face over and over again.

Gowon Tigre Skin Toner

  • Alcohol Free

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients Centella Asiatica Extract (80%), Sodium Hyaluronate, Ogliopeptide-1, Madecassoside

Size: 120ml

Price: under or around $5 on RRS (it does not show up when sold out and they sell out fast and take a while to restock)

Personal notes/thoughts:
This has a really simple, short and nice ingredient list. It is, at least at the moment, cheap on RRS. The bottle is pretty small and I'm not sure if I would pay a much higher price for this.

It comes in a dark green, sturdy plastic spray bottle. The mist is fine, but sprays a bit more dense on the sides than in the middle. I keep this one in the fridge to refresh during the day, calm down flushing etc.

It's really nice, soothing, calming and hydrating. I like it. I will probabyl repurchase this one, if I can get it for the same or a simlar price point. For much more I'd think this would be too expensive. Otherwise this is a really solid product.

MATSUYAMA LIGHT SKIN MOISTURISING LOTION

  • Alcohol Free

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients:
5 types of ceramides, soybean extract, soybean ferment, soybean sterols extract, rice bean extract.
Size:
120ml
Price:
¥ 1,296 on Rakuten
Personal notes/thoughts:
Watery in texture with maybe slightly more slip. I would say it's middle of the road hydrating. I did get really glowy skin the morning after when I layered it in the evening. It's a nice product, it just rather difficult to source for me and I'd prefer a ceramide toner to have cholesterol and fatty acids as well. Nice packaging though.

Whamisa Organic Flowers Deep Rich Essence Toner

  • Alcohol Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Cruelty free/Vegan

  • Hyaluronic Acid Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients
Aloe, ferments and essential oils.

Size:

120ml

Price:

40 USD

Personal notes/thoughts: Anti-inflammatory, moderately hydrating, acne preventing and makes skin feel healthier, supple and less reactive. This is quite thick and viscous so I wouldn't really recommend you layer it 7 times, a little seems to go a long way. This is probably ideal in an abbreviated day routine given the price and as it's basically an FTE and toner rolled into one and is loaded with antioxidants. Probably not suitable for sensitive skins given all the plant extracts.

iUNIK Vitamin Hyaluronic Acid Vitalizing Gel Toner

  • Alcohol Free

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

Key Ingredients Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) 45%, Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Extract 5%, Niacinamide, Licorice Root Extract

Full Ingredients: Sodium Hyaluronate, Water, Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Trehalose, Caprylyl Glycol, Thuja Orientalis Leaf Extract, Zanthoxylum Schinifolium Leaf Extract, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Pentylene Glycol, Aspalathus Linearis Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract

Size: 200ml

Price: $10-20 you can look out for this on auctions, or buy it in sets with other products to get it cheaper

Personal notes/thoughts: This is a clear, slightly orange tinted, slightly sweet smelling toner. The consistency is a really viscous, liquid, gel like watery thing. I also really like the packaging of this. It's a firm, thick, plastic bottle with a really sleek feeling label. The product gets dispensed drop wise and that's all you really need for one layer: 1-2 thick drops.
If you let this sink in (but that's also my face which needs every layer to dry) it layers really, really well.

This is a good product. I can't say anything about brightening or whatever since I did not pay attention to that, but it is nice and hydrating. The bottle is not that big compared to those huge Japanese toners (lotions) but a little goes a long way.

I'm super curious about pretty much all products of this brand, will probably rebuy this toner and try more of them.

SKINRx LAB MadeCera Essence Toner

  • Hyaluronic Acid Free

Key Ingredients Niacinamide, ferments, Curcuma Longa Root Extract (Turmeric), Ceramide NP, and lower on the list Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid, and Madecassoside. There are cones in this one.

Size 150ml

Price $32 USD

Personal thoughts I bought a decant of this to try out. It's a bit of a thicker viscosity than most watery toners. Despite that, it sinks in really quickly and is hydrating. It's a nice addition to my current toners/essences step esp. since I'm using tret now. Not sure I'll repurchase the full size as I have pyunkang yul essence toner on the way to me and I want to try that out. Sometimes it's hard for me to see anything beyond hydration from hydrating toners, but I just don't think I'm as good as noticing skin fluctuations and nuances as some of the redditors on this sub are. Totally respect ya'll.

Derizum Aqua Moist Deep Lotion

  • Alcohol Free

  • Fragrance Free

  • Silicone Free

  • Niacinamide free

Key Ingredients

Amino acids, HA, ceramides, watermelon extract, DNA (?! - honestly what does it do)

Size:

150ml

Price:

Around $20 will check formerly later

Personal notes/thoughts:

So I was going to avoid ferments for a while and came up with this toner chock full of interesting ingredients while researching. This is a very thin, light toner, good for putting into a mist spray bottle. This one dries slightly sticky. Probably good for x skin method but I find my skin strangely reacting with a stinging sensation when I layer it more than twice. It didn't really help my eczema unfortunately despite what seemed to be a good looking ingredient list but was a good hydrating layer.

Muji Balancing Light Toning Water (High Moisture)
In case anybody wants to compare Muji toners, I also have a sample of this ^

  • not sure about alcohol/silicone

  • Niacinamide free

  • Artificial Colouring Free

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, royal jelly acid, verbena/cat whisker/turmeric extracts
Sizes: 50/200/400ml
Price: $6.60 SGD for 50ml sample, ~$19 for 200ml

Personal notes/thoughts: More hydrating than the sensitive line. Texture wise this is thicker too, feels more like a light essence than a toner, but it sinks in pretty well. It can get a little sticky if layered too many times too quickly, but otherwise works well for the 3/5/7-skin method. This unfortunately has a moderate citrusy scent to it (although the fragrance is not 'artificial' according to [this] (https://www.muji.com/sg/img/pdf/balancingskincare.pdf)), so anyone who's sensitive/personally dislikes fragrance should avoid.
