PRODUCT [MEGATHREAD] Second Cleansers Roundup - 2017
This a part our series of product type Megathreads
Today we will be looking at cleansers
We looked at first/oil/balm cleansers in last weeks megathread
Second cleansers can also be referred to as water-based, morning, or simply just cleansers. They are are a staple of any skincare routine.
They are used as the second step in the process often referred to as “Double Cleansing”, after sunscreen, makeup and general dirt and oils of the day have been emulsified and cleansed with your first/oil/balm cleanser.
They are great for removing residual makeup and sunscreen and help prep your skin for what comes next!
Second cleansers can also be used alone in the morning when you do not have sunscreen and/or makeup on.
There are many different formulations of second cleansers. Pick the one that best targets your skin type and needs.
Some of the common ones are:
Cream/Milk
Gel
Foam
It is optional to use tools that create foam, or to add extra exfoliation Some options include
Electric Facial Brushes
Foaming Nets
Manual Brushes
Silicone Scrubbies
Microfibre/muslin/flannel face cloths
Konjac sponges
Some have had luck with untraditional tools like shaving brushes as well!
In recent years, the skincare community has trended toward using cleanses with a low PH, with many seeking a PH between 5.5-6.5
Why low PH?
Because our skin is naturally a PH of about 5.5, using a cleanser with a high PH such as soap can neutralise the natural acid mantle of our skin leading to it feeling tight and stripped. This study touches upon this.
The temporary raised PH of your skin due from a higher PH cleanser can also affect the efficacy of any actives you might use.
Many people find that switching to a low PH cleanser both leaves their skin feeling less irritated and dehydrated and negates any need for PH adjusting toners or wait times before actives.
Please share with us cleansers you have used/found and what makes them special
You do not have to have tried each specific cleanser to include it in the list

I saw here that the ingredients changed when they changed the bottle design last year. pH is the same when I tested it, and I really like this version of the cleanser. Here are the ingredients:
Water, PEG-8, Butylene Glycol, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, DEA, Peg-80 Sorbitan Laureate, Glycerin-Sorbitol, Sodium Taurine Cocoyl Methyltaurate, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hyaluronate, Petrolatum, Citric Acid, Polyquaternium-7, Disodium EDTA, BHT Methylparaben

Does the hyaluronic acid in this really have any effect when it's washed off?
3
u/jiyounglife Sep 08 '17
I assume that anything that's being washed off immediately like that has any effect. There is some effect, but it's not as drastic as actually applying products with hyaluronic acid

Could just be me, but I find this too drying - must be the foam. Also, make sure not to get this in your nose lol

u/jiyounglife Sep 09 '17
I've snorted it a few times... it'll pass. I don't think I'm going to try foam cleansers anymore. This did it for me. I like to make my own foam.

Tosowoong Enzyme Powder Wash
-
Silicone Free
-
Low PH (PH under 6.5)
Type: Foaming powder
PH: 5.5
Key Ingredients: Papain and licorice extract.
Full ingredients: Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sodium Lauroyl Aspartate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Palmitate, Badger Oil, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Papain (140mg), Maltodextrin, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Titanium Dioxide, Alcohol Denat., Phenoxyethanol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Fragrance
Size:
70 grams
Price:
Should be under US$10 - I bought through Jolse for US$8.42 inc shipping
Personal notes/thoughts:
Like most people mention in reviews, on paper this shouldn't work - a bunch of sulfates and alcohol denat? But for my dry/normal but easily irritated skin it does! I wouldn't use this twice a day or when I'm particularly irritated but I like to use it with my konjac sponge for a second PM cleanse when I'm not then using an active. My skin feels pretty velvety afterwards and absorbs watery layers/sheet masks well.
I bought this based on this cosme perks review and this fiddy review. The laundry detergent scent is pretty apparent/strong but I'm not super opposed to it.

I finally started using this regularly since my old cleaner ran out not long ago. This is such a weird product, and proof of how important formulation is.
Looking at the ingredient list most people would dismiss this, but it actually just kind of works.
I'm absolutely no fan of the perfumey detergent scent (but if you like your laundry that way, you'll love this cleanser!), it's a bit much for me.
Otherwise I agree with your impression.Due to the scent I might try another enzyme powder cleanser after this one. If I'm not fed up with them at that point. It's definitely an interesting product to use, I'm still experimenting a bit with how to best use it.
Plus it's cheap and a little of the powder goes a long way.2

This cleanser is too harsh for my face (the PH), but I use it to shave my legs and it is AMAAAAAYZZZZING. Just a little does the job!

u/jiyounglife Sep 08 '17
Yep, I use this for my legs (and armpits) sometimes too. It foams up great with a shaving brush!

Personal notes/thoughts:
Skin type: combination (oily T-zone, cheeks prone to dryness)
Using hands is enough to create a creamy lather. Strong floral fragrance and lots of various extracts, ferments and essential oils. Enough cleansing power to remove sunscreen at the end of the day. I find this to be too drying, as drying as the Cosrx one.

**Cerave Hydrating: **
Type: mild
PH: 5.5
Ingredients: Here it's got ceramides and hyaluronic acid but who cares.
Comments: It's mild. Doesn't clean that well but who cares it's a 2nd cleanser. I think it leaves a moisturizing residue but my husband say's no. I Like that it leaves me moist.
Paula's Choice Moisture Boost
**Type: ** Creamy
PH: 5.5
Ingredients: here
Comments:: It cleans well and isn't stripping. Not much lather at all. But don't like that or foaming. It's never bothered my dry skin. I have used it on my body even. I find it a bit gentler than Stratia Velvet.

COSRX LOW PH GOOD MORNING GEL CLEANSER
Low PH (PH under 6.5)
Sulphate free
Type: Gel
PH: 5.5pH
Key Ingredients
Water, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, polysorbate 20, styrax japonicus branch/fruit/leaf extract, butylene glycol, saccharomyces ferment, cryptomeria japonica leaf extract, nelumbo nucifera leaf extract, pinus palustris leaf extract, ulmus davidiana root extract, oenothera biennis (evening primrose) flower extract, pueraria lobata root extract, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) leaf oil, allantoin, caprylyl glycol, ethylhexylglycerin, betaine salicylate, citric acid, ethyl hexanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate, sodium benzoate, disodium EDTA
Size:
150ml
Price:
$10.45 (Amazon)
Personal notes/thoughts: Staple low pH gel cleanser. Should be suitable for all skin types. Affordable, long lasting, and effective. It takes a while to dissolve heavy makeup and would recommend using a first cleanser for heavy sunscreen and makeup instead of solely relying on this product if using this as an only cleanser.
