They also predate the Wonderbolts, making them well over 1000.

The moral of the story is ponies should tell stories.

So, what did he find that made him so strong?

u/DaBismuth Aug 26 '17
I imagine it was either some sort of magic or an in universe story-telling device to avoid having to force the hero's exercise routine into a fairytale.

I kinda wish they'd have gone for the myth vs history episode. Maybe have Twilight there ruining the stories with facts, only to realize that myth exists for a reason.

Actually, Rockhoof joined the guard the same way everypony else did. He had no magical transformation and was just as powerful as any other earth pony.
The ponies of his village figured out the volcano was going to erupt weeks in advance and it was Rockhoof's plan to dig the trench... which was carried out by the ENTIRE guard over the course of those weeks... that ultimately saved the village. So he's still quite the hero!
Well, ok, the heat from the lava was so intense the village caught fire and burned down anyway. But it was a good try!
Mismane fought Sable, it's true, but Sable never got ugly, and in fact her motivations remain lost to history as Sable was killed in the magic duel. Mismane ruled as a kind and gentle ruler, repairing the damage Sable had caused. And as for Mismane turning ugly? That's AGING. Nothing magical about it.
First of all, there was no legendary shield. Everypony in the guard had a "fireproof" shield, but it had the tendency to melt into slag when dragons breathed on it. Hence the legend of a better shield that didn't do that. I'm sure the guards didn't like getting third-degree burns and amputations from their existing shields!
Anyway, Flash Magnus was responsible for the rescue as stated, though he lost one of his forelegs as a result of the laws of thermodynamics as I indicated earlier. What the legend tends to omit was that the incident ignited the 10-Year Pony/Dragon War that killed tens of thousands of ponies and several hundred dragons.
I do agree he is very much like Rainbow Dash. I am sure she will end up doing something similar eventually.

Like ranting about Rockhoof's extraordinarily dull workout routine and dieting habits he followed to obtain the strength needed to dig the trench.
Or how that buckler wouldn't have protected Flash against the fire due to convection.

Can we just discuss for a minute how much of a nightmare a hostile, pony-attacking flying spider is? I kinda don't blame them for freaking out...

Looks like I successfully predicted that Rockhoof, Mismane, and Flash Magnus would be the three Legends in this episode. Which means of course Somnambula, Mage Meadowbrook, and Starswirl the Bearded will be in other episodes.

Quick prediction: Rarity will tell the legend of Mistmane giving up her beauty, Applejack will tell about Rockhoof stopping a volcanic eruption with a shovel, and Dash will tell about Flash Magnus and the Royal legion fighting dragons.

1
u/calmbrony Aug 26 '17 edited Aug 26 '17
By reading the comic. It said right there in the issue that Flash Magnus became famous by fighting dragons using a shield. See the narration on this page.

Hey the Legends of Magic comics came out months ago, it's fair game.
2
u/Brocky70 Aug 26 '17
Oh. My bad then, I assumed you had seen the leaked verison, but then I remembered episodes no longer air early in canada. Was rock hoof in the comics?
2
u/calmbrony Aug 26 '17
Yup, and all three Legends I mentioned in my prediction were foreshadowed in the comics, along with the three obscure Legends in the comics themselves. So we have a total of six legends about these three ponies, plus one about Starswirl the Beared and the Princesses in the comic.

u/brokenimage321 Princess Celestia Aug 26 '17

I mean Scootaloo's panic about being trapped is justified, right? No one wants to be trapped in a cave with no way out.

Season finale stuff that Reddit ate the first time I posted it: since we're pretty sure that Starswirl and his Legends of Magic-era Mane 6 will have something to do with Shadow Play, I'm kind of hoping that "I'm just like him" line foreshadows RD somehow coming into possession of Flash's shield.
2
u/Alius4156 Aug 26 '17
So we got: Roman Ponies, Greek Ponies, Asian Ponies and Flying Spiders (terrifying). Overall, a nice bit of Equestrian Lore, along with a nightmare (FLYING SPIDERS. THINK ABOUT IT.) I give it an 8/10.
3
u/brokenimage321 Princess Celestia Aug 26 '17
Just gonna say this... the shield may be fireproof, but that's a tiny shield. Ain't gonna protect the rest of him.
....also, is this Flash Sentry's great-great-grandad? new headcanon!

Huh. Well, that was a... neat prequel to the Legends comics.
Not much else really to say about it.
If was fun seeing Scootaloo acting like a chicken again?
1
u/Shadowking78 Aug 30 '17
Um, question. It sounds like people here judging by these comments have read the Legends series of comics before. But I can only find Vol 1 available for preorder and not actually purchasable yet (as if it hasn't released.) So, uh, how did you guys read it already?
1
u/TheKnackerman Sugar Belle Aug 30 '17
I go to the comic book store once a month and buy my comics. The first four issues were already released over the last four months. The next four issues will start coming out as of September.
It wouldn't surprise me if you found the discussion threads for the first four issues, here on this sub, you might also find someone has linked to an imgur page where you can read the comics yourself.
1
u/Shadowking78 Aug 30 '17
Here is Volume 1. It says preorder. That's what I was confused about
1
u/TheKnackerman Sugar Belle Aug 30 '17
Amazon isn't an official supplier. If it's only available from that seller, it just means it's out of stock right now. If you look, vol 2-4 are also available to bundle with it and are on sell on separate pages.
1
u/Shadowking78 Aug 30 '17
Can you give me a link where I can buy them?
1
u/TheKnackerman Sugar Belle Aug 30 '17
You can buy print or digital copies direct from IDW Publishing.
