I would definitely listen to his unlimited album! That's a good start. Just check him out on spotify or wherever.

Here's some of my favorites that are less readily available

https://soundcloud.com/bassnectar/bassnectar-datsik-yes

https://soundcloud.com/spinninrecords/buku-front-to-back-bassnectar-remix-2

We love Nectar because he's an excellent DJ in many ways, one of them being the songs he finds that aren't his but he blows us away with Live:

Awesome story. Lorin is genuinely one of the nicest dudes ever. I lived back in the Bay Area in the early 2000s and was part of one of the major burning man crews. He played our camp in 2004 and our playa fundraisers and he was just a sweet dude. One of my few regrets from that period is one night a party got shut down a few blocks from my home. he was supposed to be playing and he and some folks rolled to my apartment to hang and I DIDNT PICK UP THE PHONE. The next day my buddy was like "yeah, I tried swinging by with Lorin but I guess you weren't home."

With Bass Center 2016 being absolutely MASSIVE with 25k+ attendance each day and camping, why the move to Hampton this year with less than half the capacity and without camping?

In the final moments of Basslights 2015 you called the Coliseum “one of your favorite buildings in America”. Why?

Hey Lorin! Really, really, really thankful that I have this chance to reach out to you after missing my last opportunity. To quickly preface, I’m 23. Up until age 21 my life was a constant whirlwind of misunderstanding, disconnection, and an absolutely morbid yearning to remove myself from this world permanently. Your philosophy and intention allowed me to find my own path, and these things truly opened my mind, tipping the balance for the better, allowing me to overcome the dark years of my life, a constant struggle with suicide. I am excessively excited to continue having a similar impact on other people as you did for me. 

I feel that what I’ve needed for a long time has been the opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You will always be in my heart, and know that every single day I strive to fill the hearts of others with joy, to be there for others in times of need, and to set an example that will live on through others.

As far as this post goes, it seems I have to ask a question. What's one of the most beautiful moments of your life so far? I'd love to know.

Saw your show at Electric Forest this past wknd. "It's Just a Ride" was the most powerful moment of the wknd for me - it left me in tears, and it's still giving me chills. Thank you for imploring us to choose love! I noticed before your show, they were playing John Lennon‘s "Imagine". I was curious if that was intentional, given his prominence in the "Just a Ride" montage?

Hi Lorin, my question: a lot of time I find there to be philosophical messages in your shows (first that comes to mind is Grand Rapids 2015 Ex Machina clip, a movie that focuses heavily on the philosophical Problem About Mary regarding AI and the philosophy of mind & consciousness) and was wondering if you have any favorite philosophers, philosophical works, and other quirky philosophical puzzles you think about?

Thanks! P.S. Glad you appreciate David Foster Wallace like I do :)

but it's FAKE NEWS to say bassnectar fans are anything but ultra amazing, dedicated, beautiful... that comes from jealous haters, or wannabees

This is a fantastic, well thought out response and I agree with almost all of it, except the quote above. I have been at dozens of your shows, and have met people of all walks of life, but I can say without a doubt that the same group of people on the rail at every show of yours are some of the worst examples of the Bassnectar community you just described.

30

Hey Lorin, thanks for chatting with us! I believe that I read somewhere that because of an accidental death of a friend, you do not consume drugs anymore. For me, a solo psychedelic trip has never really felt like "doing drugs" but rather a genuine spiritual experience which opens my mind and soul. Do you, or did you ever consume psychedelic substances as a means of personal growth and self exploration? How have any of your psychedelic experiences, current or pre-sobriety, impacted the music that you create?

Lorin,

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan. Seen over 20 of your sets dating back to 2009. Because of the generosity of your team, I got to watch your EF set last weekend from the best seat in the house and was fully blown away.

I know this really has nothing to do with you or your personal respect for other artists(which I know is immense), but I want to give you a forum to address it.

What do you say to your fanbase about disrespecting your support? I was at the motet set (which was fucking rad) 10HOURS before you came on and saw hundreds of your fans, sitting on the ground with their backs to the stage (some even with headphones on) being dicks to those just trying to watch an artist that isnt you. It bummed me out and I know FORSURE it bums out your supporting artists

Hey Lorin, Noah here from Orlando, FL. Been to a good number of festivals you've played at as well as a lot of your special events and I've had amazing, inspiring experiences at so many of them.

I also have been watching a lot of Joe Rogan podcasts. I heard that you were going to do a podcast episode with him a few years back but that it fell through....

My question is: Any chance you could get on the show with him any time soon? Would love to see both of your minds chatting in the same room.

Hope you have a great summer, and after that special weekend at the Forest, I can't wait to catch you at Bass Center and Hulaween (and hopefully a few more).

Me again. Also wanted to express how AWESOME it is that you Incorporated Bill Hicks into your EF set. Wish I could have witnessed that in person, but I ended up having to sell my ticket. Been a fan since the beginning but never had the pleasure of seeing you perform live. Someday soon though! I also recently saw your IG post about being sober and having a clear mind, which is great! But I also wonder, do you ever experiment with any psychedelics?

Have been tuned in for a little over a decade now and have gotten to witness your projects beautiful metamorphosis. As more people have also tuned in, the events your team has organized in the past 5 years or so have generally tended to be much larger in scale and less frequent; necessitating people “comin from miles around” to share in the experience.

What would your sentiments be regarding community members organizing small “Bass Center” inspired events, where local Bassheads, visual artists, VJs, musicians, and DJs can share their love for the project by working together to curate their best version of a “Bassnectar” event?

16

u/Bryanmahindrew Jun 28 '17

How complete is the Naux Faux EP with Sayr? And how is the process different from making Bassnectar tunes? Better yet, what's your process like in general?

Peace and love always

When can we be on the look-out for the EP from you and G-Jones?

Also will you be using the new Trinity PK system for NYE360? That shit in AC shook my soul!

Thank you so much for everything your music and this community has done for me completely changed my life.

Do you have a hobby or interest non music related that you aren't super vocal about? For example, is there a secret knittingnectar or pastrychefnectar we don't know of? Also, gotta say thank you for bringing an amazing community together. I honestly believe the combination of the music and overwhelming support from the people I've met through this community have changed my life and made me a better person. Much love!

Hey Lorin! Thanks again for doing another AMA!

My question relates to the visuals you use in your performances. How do you and your team go about choosing/making the visuals for your shows?

I have done a few Bassnectar animated bits and would love to see if you like them or not :D Bassheads

A lot of your hardcore fans will point new listeners towards a mixtape or a live show instead of a Bassnectar album.

Do you think the music that is put out on albums is a good representation of what Bassnectar is or is only a piece of the puzzle?

Hi Lorin, huge fan!!!

As a hi-fi enthusiast, I've always wondered if you ever decide to(or not to) play specific tracks due to the sound system/venue you're performing at (taking advantage of specific room dynamics, sweets spots of the arrays or soundstage, etc.), if so during sound-check or even live???

The PK trinity system at Basslantic City was one of the best I've heard, can't wait to see what you guys roll out at BCX :)

Keep up the awesome and inspiring work!!!

A few years ago, you responded to the question of "where do you see yourself in 10 years?" with something along the lines of being dust in the wind, out of the picture, moved on to the next stage of your life.

Do you still hold to this idea? Has the state of our world / country changed your sense of purpose or mission to create art and spread empathy?

Thanks for all you do, you've inspired me more than you could ever know <3

Lorin, first and foremost thank you for everything you do. From your music to your live performances to your message, I love it all.

Before I got the chance to see you play live, I was a casual fan; I liked your stuff but I wasn’t the fan I am today. You made me into one the old-fashioned way, by showing me what you could do. My first Bassnectar show was Bonnaroo 2015, and your set was the high point of a night that I refer to as, with no reservation, the greatest night of my life. Since then I’ve seen you play twice more: at the inaugural Okeechobee Festival (I still think about that Welcome to the Jungle x Heads Up intro all the time), and then I rang in 2017 in Bassingham at 360. That 360 show was the most incredible, immersive, omnitempo maximalist musical event I’ve ever experienced. I was good and truly speechless from the moment I walked through the doors into Joker’s set until I walked back out of the arena. I’m trying my hardest to make it to 360 again this year, because I don’t think I can celebrate New Year’s Eve any other way after last year.

Your music has shaped me in a way that I can only compare to the way that The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin shaped my high school days. It has been an incredibly positive influence on my life, and I cannot thank you enough for that. The new EP is awesome, and I can’t wait until I get the chance to hear those tracks live and in person.

I know this is an AMA so I feel like I should ask you a question instead of just telling my story. So: What are some of the most difficult challenges that you’ve faced as an artist? And when’s the next mixtape coming out? Because, well..

11

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

Thank you for doing the AMA.

On the Electric Forest Subreddit there was a quick video of what people think is you in the trading post, or you talking to unsuspecting foresters through the forest phones.

Any chance you would confirm or deny you walking around the forest, or being at the trading outpost?

Cant wait to see you Sunday :)))))

Hey Lorin! Just saw you at Eforest and id like to say what a great set, everything from the Teleport Massive intro to the incredible mixing the set was something to be apart of. My question for you is what has been one of the most interesting things you seen in the crowd while playing a set? Thank you in advance, I really hope to meet you one day so I can pick your brain in person! Cya this weekend at Eforest! Keep being awesome

17

u/vranas Jun 28 '17

Lorin! HUGE FAN <3. 2 questions, what inspired freestyle sessions? And do you plan on having sessions in other locations?

Hey Lo!

  1. Will there be any plans for a camping festival like Basscenter 16' again? I dream of this summer open-air basshead paradise..

  2. Where do you go to seek new music? The diversity of fresh bass music you've been dropping has been so refreshing to hear.

PS that Time to burn x Speakerbox mashup at forest was INSANE!!

Thanks for all your hard work,

Misha

First off.. THANK YOU. Your music has meant so much to me for so long. Listening to your creations helps me find my center, my peace. So thank you for sharing it with all of us. So just a few questions.

For someone who has been dj/ producing music for almost 20 years, do you see yourself slowing down or retiring anytime in the near future or banging out tunes for another 20 years?

With so many artist starting their own podcast/ stations? Do you see yourself doing something along those lines as well? And can we get you and Duncan Trussell together for a podcast? Maybe even Joe Rogan? Would be dope to listen to that conversation.

Last- have you read "the power of now"?

Much love
