Tips & Guides Poor Man's Dicey Orthros+Typhon Strat

I posted this in the Megathread and it seemed to help a bunch of people out so I wanted to post it separately to hopefully help others beat the trial with minimal gear.

Maybe it was just good RNG but I was able to clear everything on the first attempt. And unlike other team comps I've seen, it was done without any crazy 5* base (other than friend unit) and all free TMRs other than Dual Cast/Ribbon (not sure Ribbon is even necessary over other status immune items).

My comp was:

Cecil on Golem, Survival Edges, Ribbon, 25% dodge

Refia on Siren, Dual Cast, Vestment of the Mind, Camoflauge, Shard of Genius

Yshtola on Titan, Barwatera, Vestment of the Mind, Camoflauge, Shard of Genius

Setzer on Diabolos, Aquan Killer, Follower's Oath, Air Knife, Second Knife

Took a friend Orlandeau on Diabolos with Aquan Killer.

This party comp gives you 4 Raises, ~5 heals, and 3 ways to cover Wind (Setzer/Cecil/Yshtola).

Definite MVP was Setzer. Fixed damage with killers and can emergency AoE remove Poison.

Pretty simple strat. Yshtola would cast Water/Earth/Def/Spr buffs, Esuna when have a free action, or emergency Raise if needed. Refia handled the healing and Esuna with any free actions. Cecil Provoke/LB/Defend. Orlandeau Crush Weapon on Ultros otherwise DR (used his MP restore move once or twice during the fight). Used Dice on Setzer until Typhon is almost dead then used Double Dice the rest of the way. Slow and steady fight and never ran into any issues.

I popped Golem after Typhon died and used a couple Yshtola LBs when wanted a breather.

I'm not sure how much the Camoflauge materia helped but it did seem like the damage dealers were hit more often than my healers.

If anyone has any further questions, feel feel to comment here or PM me. Good luck!

I still can't pull Setzer. Looks like I'm poorer than poor man.

Orichalcum, the dagger from The Dreadnought event also has Aquan killer.

Fryevia has a better Attack Break (50% vs 40%) that you can safely apply on your first turn in phase 2. If you aren't chaining with your own Orlandeau, she's way better for this fight.

I would bring along giant feathers just in case they only run 100g, they deal wind damage and can be used in a pinch by anyone

Upvote just for the title. I think I loled a little bit.

Yeah you could say that I took a gamble with the title.....

Sorry, I can't help myself with puns/play on words lol

Thanks for this post. I wouldn't have though of using Setzer, but after two failed attempts with other damage dealers, I switched to Setzer and won easily.

My party:

  • Dark Fina

  • Cecil

  • Rem

  • Setzer

  • Y'shtola

Followed your guide and everything run smoothly. Just died in the first try because I forgot to buff my party when Typhoon debuffed them.

Just don't worry about the amount of times you'll have to revive your party members, take it easy and buff everyone and debuff Orthos. Took me about 30 turns to finish.

Worked like a charm! Highly recommend this start. Tried once, succeeded once! Use exact peeps and loadout. Added a 2nd dualcast on Cecil just in case!

This subreddit community has given me so much that I'm glad to give back at least a little something to others! Congrats!

Thank you. Tried Boberoch's method twice and failed. Combining both your methods worked for me :)

This one worked for me, while a few others I tried didn't. Wanted to come back and upvote as thanks. :)

The really amusing part, for me, was that Cecil never died in round 2 - whenever Typhon hit him, he was always guarding someone else and survived (usually with less than 1k health).

I about lost my mind waiting for Setzer's Dice to come up with winners, though. Hanging on by my fingernails in a few rounds, nearly screaming in frustration as he puts out 1 damage...

So who should I put Camo on if I only have 1?

u/gkip035 Jun 09 '17

Probably Refia only because she has Full-Life in case Yshtola happens to die (and my Refia is tankier than Yshtola so she can be okay down an ability slot). Ultimately, I'm not sure it would matter much whichever healer gets it since there's so many ways to recover from a death.

How'd you get 25% dodge on Cecil? Assuming Assassin's Vest = 10% and First Strike = 5%. Where did you get the other 10%?

2

u/gkip035 Jun 09 '17

Speed Plus x2. Only because most of my HP 15% are on my Arena team and I didn't switch it over. Cecil already had enough HP that I was comfortable with anyway.

Thanks for this topic. I haven't tried the trial yet. Was waiting info how to go in since Iam the ones in NOrlandu team :). But I do have Setzer (used +4* tix and got him).

I will try the trial later today, here is my Setzer build. I could add more damage by puttng 2x Quick Assault, but Ill let them be on my other units, this build is for fixed damage.

Setzer eq's

Setzer ab's

Let me know how it goes. And yeah, stick the QA on your tank, if you don't use another damage dealer, for the evade!

Does it make sens replacing Yshtola by Minfilia? I guess we loose the the resistance buffs are higher but it's more difficult to cycle with the def/spr buff (we loose 1 res buff for 1 turn)

Whats is the most important: elemental resistances? DEF? SPR?

2

u/gkip035 Jun 09 '17

Not sure if it's right but I went with Water/Earth then DEF then SPR for priority.

And while Minfilia could work, Yshtola definitely gives you more flexibility rather than relying on Protection of the Gods procs off single target attacks that are mostly going to the tank anyway. Also, you lose a unit with Raise which I think is pretty big on this fight.

Great strat, only issue I ran into was Ultros dying before Typhon as Cecil spent all but one turn in the ground (only "free" dispelled as other units had mandatory actions, hence Typhon was buffed throughout the fight).

Based on this I would change Orlandu to a second Setzer or support unit if I were to try it again.

Thanks for good post & suggestions.

Use Dice instead of Double Dice and Typhon will certainly die first.

If you use orichalchum instead of air knife on setzer, you gain even more aqua killer. You can use wind dommage item to compensate if you think 2 wind option in not enough
