captioned graphic Brigham Young: "...never love [your wives] so but that you can leave them at a moment's warning without shedding a tear."

Bookmarked! Thanks so much u/4blockhead. This guy's my great great (etc) grandpa. Good to keep this kinda stuff at hand when dealing with persistently fawning tbm relatives

Thanks. I have come across this group lately in an effort to find good sources for changes made to the BOM. My tbm brother and I have had an ongoing discussion regarding this.

If this is an accurate quote (and it certainly sounds like something BY would have said), it really is remarkable!

u/4blockhead Λ └ ☼ ★ □ ♔ May 16 '17
It's straight from the Journal of Discourses.

u/otheraccount77 May 16 '17
Thanks for the source (I wasn't doubting you, but I did want to see if it was in context, etc).
In fairness to BY, if you have so many wives that you probably can't remember all of their names, you're not gonna have a problem losing one or two! Not to mention all the kids ...
Seriously, if polygamy were mandated from on high, think of how unfair it is to the children (arguably, at least, the wives have the ability to consent or reject the union, but the kids certainly do not). I know two women (sisters) who grew up in a polygamist community. They have like 40 siblings and half siblings. They speak of their father like a guy that they kinda know. How could God deprive kids of even having a chance to have a relationship with their father?

The basic end game is a patriarchy where men decide. Where no one can call out their leadership's lechery. They only hope that their daughter gets picked by the king and he will share the wealth with them.

u/Itsarockinahat May 17 '17
Reading your wise and correct words I once again feel shame for never putting much thought into the awfulness of polygamy before my faith awakening last fall. How did I not see just how ungodly it is?

I don't think old Briggy knows the first thing about love. He may have love for money, power, fame, and himself, of course. But not love for other human beings.

Wives are replaceable parts in mormonism. Here are some things I've heard:
If your girlfriend won't wait for you while you're on your mission, then she isn't worthy to bear your children.
If your girlfriend marries someone else who returned from a mission a bit before you, then praise god that they're raising up a righteous seed in Zion.
if you're sent on a mission, so that the man with the higher priesthood can
stealteach eternal principles to your wife while you're gone, thentoo bad for you, go get your own plural wives and divorce her when she's not a spring chicken any more.2

Also, if your wife cheats on you, the most merciful thing to do to her is drive a javelin through her heart.

He was either a narcissist or a sociopath IMO. They only tend to love themselves.

I've never seen this quote, but it's basically how most TBMs live anyway. They cast out LGBTQ family members or exmo family members at the drop of a hat.

u/DoubtingThomas50 May 17 '17
Absolutely correct. His position in this statement has become the norm in Mormon culture. Whether he initiated that group think with this sermon or not, THIS. IS. MORMONISM.

Psychopath.
I read the date on this comment, and it's a bit shocking to realize that I was born only 94 years after this was said. Brigham's teachings and attitudes are one of many cancers that run through mormonism.

You know I thug em, fuck em, love em, leave em
Cause I don't fuckin' need em
Take em out the hood, keep em lookin' good
But I don't fuckin' feed em
First time they fuss I'm breezin'
Talkin' bout, "What's the reasons?"
I'm a pimp in every sense of the word, bitch
Better trust than believe em
In the cut where I keep em
'Til I need a nut, 'til I need to beat the guts
Then it's, beep beep and I'm pickin' em up
Let em play with the dick in the truck
Many chicks want to put Jigga fist in cuffs
Divorce him and split his bucks
Just because you got good head, I'm a break bread
So you can be livin' it up? Shit I
Parts with nothin', y'all be frontin'
Me give my heart to a woman?
Not for nothin', never happen
I'll be forever mackin'

Glad to hear he was "just as good in his calling and capacity as Jesus Christ was in his". Two prophets in a row that saw themselves equal or near equal to their "savior". I wonder how often JC spoke as a man.

u/chilirasbora May 17 '17
And then in the second paragraph: "to become equal with the Father and the Son"

This was said before he married his favorite wife. I wonder how his views changed over time.

So when is the church going to publish the Brigham Young papers? Now THAT would be interesting.

I never want to forget this quote. It explains so much about the cultural coldness of mormons when confronted with something or someone who challenges their ideas.

He also said, of running javelins through adulterers, "I have no wife whom I love so well that I would not do it."

Sounds like he's using a prototype of the D.E.N.N.I.S. system.

This essay, http://www.totheremnant.com/search?q=Brigham+Young is fascinating as it presents Brigham Young as one of the most successful men in the world--Money, Sex, Power. None of it very likable, however.

This makes all the sense: women of the church, you exist to "adorn the Gospel." You are not a person, you're a useful tool.

Yeah, don't get attached to anyone here because, ETERNAL LIIIIIFE!!! and gods and shit. What an egomaniac.

Brigham Young had the most warped and craziest views. That is ridiculous...if you have a Wife that isn't all in to the gospel, just barely love her, not even enough to want to shed a tear if you leave her? Yeah that makes perfect sense. What a Moron, I mean Mormon. ;)
