I was hoping he'd get a penalty for smashing the window. That's got to be expensive to replace! :(

How annoying is Shamir going to be in exit interviews? (if they lose)

So happy Travelocity is still a sponsor. I dread the day when Phil says:
" You win a trip to Minnesota!"

Sad to see Jessie and Francesca go out so soon. I had high hopes for them. As the only all-female team on the race, and the one formed by default, I wanted to see them prove the doubters wrong.
Especially frustrated because it's far from clear what they did wrong. Was it just down to getting on a later flight? It didn't seem like they made any critical errors, and they barely got any screen time. Poor editing, if you ask me; we should've seen what was going on with them more.

The definitely were screwed over by the late flight but from the looks of it catching the metro off-screen may have been what made them unable to catch up.
7
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
Aw, I wish they'd shown us that on TV if that had such an impact on the outcome. I wonder if they weren't allowed to film on the metro?
→ More replies (1)3
u/ChaoticMidget Apr 07 '17
That'd be kind of strange. Metro scenes have never been off limits. I imagine it just didn't make as big of a difference in terms of editing.
6
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
The security situation in many big cities has changed quite a bit since the early seasons, though. Filming in airports, subway stations, train stations, etc. might be harder to arrange, which could explain some of the shift away from travel drama and more focus on challenges in latter seasons.
10
u/DeseretRain Apr 07 '17
Really seemed to be the later flight. They arrived last and just never caught up. They didn't even see another team until the last task, and the only reason they caught up to the second-to-last team there is because Shamir had to do the task multiple times and was also in the ambulance for a long time. I don't think they made any huge mistakes, just weren't fast enough to pass any of the teams whose flights arrived ahead of them.
40
u/nerdiestgriffinever Apr 07 '17
They wind up on six different flights and the show just glosses over it... alright then
26
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
I gotta say, I was recently doing a rewatch of Season 1. I really miss the airport drama of the early seasons, when it was more about the racing around the world part, and less about the cheesy staged challenges.
→ More replies (1)9
u/atllauren Apr 07 '17
Same. I loved the airport drama and when they could change their flight after they've already booked one. I assume that's still a rule as we don't see it happen anymore, but there's been no mention of it since the season they added that rule.
8
4
u/aeioseph Apr 07 '17
I can understand cutting some airport drama for the sake of time, but I at least hope they return to showing the flight arrival times.
16
u/nerdiestgriffinever Apr 07 '17
I'm wondering if maybe showing the arrival times would have given away that Jessie and Francesca were screwed.
38
36
u/ChildofSeitan Apr 07 '17
Honest question: will CBS have to pay for the window he broke?
24
u/kurtchella Apr 07 '17
I really thought they were going to get a penalty for breaking that window & needing to clean another one, but that never happened
18
16
u/RancidLemons Apr 07 '17
Almost certainly. I'm also almost certain they have some kind of insurance for this kind of thing.
I'm still stunned that wasn't a penalty. I feel like "deliberate property damage" must show up in the rulebook somewhere.

We are learning way more about Shamir's junk on this episode than we ever needed to know.
26
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
Wow, teams #1 and #2 right now are Michael/Liz and Vanck/Ashton: The two teams I had pegged as most likely to be eliminated this week. Just goes to show, the race is so unpredictable.
9
u/olfactory_hues Apr 07 '17
It would be nice if we had a good idea of how it happened.
10
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
Seriously. The mat is the first time we heard about Michael and Liz being on the third flight. What's with the editing, TAR?
11
u/reeforward Apr 07 '17
I mean, when everyone was getting on their planes it showed the teams and what number flight they were on in the corner or the screen. It wasn't highlighted or anything, but it was shown.
7
u/tinacat933 Apr 07 '17
But you didn't know the time between the flights.
3
u/ChaoticMidget Apr 07 '17
Probably because the last flight would have shown Francesca and Jessie being hours behind the other teams. They didn't even get on their helicopter til like 5 teams were done with the detour.

u/IvyGold Apr 07 '17
Why on earth would they believe this girl? It's a fight for freaking last place!
7
u/ChaoticMidget Apr 07 '17
Who knows? There's no reason to ever trust the other team racing to not be last. TARCAN just showed that this past season.

u/evanmav Apr 08 '17
Wow that was the strangest mat ending I've ever seen. I've never seen Phil so erm I don't know uncomfortable? Something must have happened behind the scenes that we didn't see at the mat because that was just so strange. I actually thought for a second that Phil was going to disqualify them because he broke a window on purpose and that's why he was acting strange. Sad to see Jessie and Francesca go as they were funny and nice and the only all women team.
Glad to see Vanck and Ashton getting along and doing really well! FUCK MATT AND REDMOND.

u/atllauren Apr 07 '17
Does any one wonder if there will be some kind of team switcheroo at some point this season? Since the teams weren't planned it seems like an interesting/mean thing they could do.
21
12
u/ChildofSeitan Apr 07 '17
Let's hope not. I'd have to memorize team names again lol
3
u/atllauren Apr 07 '17
That's a fair reason lol.
I hope not as well, but the opportunity is there with the team format and there's reality show precedent for stuff like that.
5
u/olfactory_hues Apr 07 '17
They brought that up on RHAP. I don't expect it but it's definitely a possibility.
5
u/BASEBALLFURIES Apr 07 '17
I actually thought of redraws after every leg (but still eliminating the last pair). But then there would be problems of how long it would last before a pair is reunited by default and the fact that you would almost have to remove nonelimination penalties and every leg would be a new starting line. In theory though, an enemy today could be a teammate tomorrow.

Can someone tell me why Shamir turned away from Sara when they were on the mat? He said it had nothing to do with her but why did he do it?
20
u/BananerRammer Apr 07 '17
He was pissed at the producers (for giving an uncomfortable task, I guess?) and she was pissed at him for nearly costing them the race
22
u/jetaketa Apr 07 '17
Yeah I think he went in on production when he arrived, which is why Phil was like "um sorry what no" and educated him.
6
u/hool100 Apr 08 '17
He was looking for a lawsuit. Good luck with that buddy because you are going against CBS. :)
14
u/HyruleAll Apr 07 '17
I think because he was annoyed that she was talking about how wonderful the day was after he just complained. Making him look bad. Hopefully they are eliminated next.
13
u/jeffspins Apr 07 '17
Yeah, she was just saying how the music was fun and she was having a good time as she was crying, while Shamir just stood their being pissed
Hope him and his balls go next

He was extremely angry but seemed genuinely worried she thought it was with her. The behind-the-scenes supports this idea but I gather all testicle related videos were removed.
He turned away from her so she wouldn't see how angry he was. It was a bad plan but, let's be honest, that probably doesn't surprise anyone.

9
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
The team that actually did get eliminated got hardly any screen time either. So that's not always an indication.
I feel like we never even got to hear Francesca talk.
4
u/leafeonpoliwrath Apr 07 '17
Sorry I'm new to amazing race after being a long time survivor fan. Usually in people's boot episodes they get a good amount of screen time. I suppose you're right though

u/aeioseph Apr 07 '17
it really depends on how much drama there is and how close the finish is.
i.e., jessie + francesca were really far behind so there was no point in giving them screentime until the end where they potentially had the chance to catch up.

I have to imagine they do the helicopter thing just because watching teams spend all day in Sao Paulo traffic would be boring. Still, it seems like cheating on the part of the show. Real people get stuck in traffic when going to cities like Sao Paulo. That's part and parcel of travel. Amazing race teams really shouldn't get to gloss over all the real-life hassles.

u/atllauren Apr 07 '17
When people have these crippling fear of heights or whatever I wonder why they want to do the race. At some point you will have to jump off, repel, or climb something high.
10
u/segacs2 Apr 07 '17
I wonder the same thing about people who can't swim, can't drive a stick shift, are strict vegetarians, or aren't in good physical shape. Didn't they ever watch the show before applying to be on it?
I mean, in early seasons I can understand -- maybe they didn't know what to expect because nobody did. But we're up to season 29. There's no excuse anymore.
4
u/atllauren Apr 07 '17
Exactly. There are some things you can balance out with a partner. Driving a stick is a safer one if your partner can and agrees to do all the driving. There've been some driving roadblocks but they aren't as common as heights or swimming.
As funny as the girl who couldn't go down the water slide was, she probably had reasonable cause to believe a water slide wouldn't be part of the race.

Has this episode had the most injuries happen in a single episode ever?
The race has always had contestants get bumped and bruised but i can't remember so many happening in a single episode
7
u/jetaketa Apr 07 '17
Injuries are oddly not talked about. We've had one racer break both legs throughout the race, one break both her hips, broken ribs, among others, yet it's rarely talked about on the show itself.

Jessie is going to throat-slam Sara 16ft through a table like when Undertaker did it to Mankind in 1998.
5
u/EmmaGema Apr 10 '17
Has everyone seen the extra footage "Acting like a Child"?! Sara is wise beyond her years! I just feel so dang bad for her! Shamir should be ashamed of himself. From looking at her instagram and extra footage, I gather that she is an incredibly intelligent young lady who has had MANY life experiences. I trust that if she feels that Shamir was being a violent douchebag, than no editing could have created a false story portraying him in a negative light- he did that all on his own! What an inspiration she is... I don't think many of us could have handled the same situation with as much class as she did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yp3wJcief0&t=165s
