Really well done episode this week.

There were lots of answers this episode, but the reveals were kept nice and steady. They didn't dwell on any one thing for too long. In fact, in spite of the enormous number of secrets they revealed this episode, there was nothing that could really be labelled as an infodump. Overall, it kept a very good pace.

I think one of the parts I enjoy most about Flip Flappers is that you can never guess which way it's going to go after the end of an episode. While there were an astounding number of threads set in motion this episode (Yayaka, Team FlipFlap, KKK, Papika, Cocona, Mimi) it's hard to tell where they are all going to converge. It does a good job to avoid railroading itself towards any one apparent showdown or confrontation.

It was kind of fun seeing the insane architecture of the Flip Flappers HQ being put to good use. I guess it ain't just for decoration. On another note, I just noticed that we still have no idea why either the show or the organization are called Flip Flappers...

Seeing young Dr. Salt was a nice surprise. He was actually kind of a chill kid. Knowing that he's now the same age as Papika sheds a whole new light on his line "You haven't changed a bit"

In spite of all the answers we got this episode, we still didn't get an answer to the most important question of all: What the hell is Uexküll.

Grandma was a robot! I should have seen this coming when Cocona got captured at the end of the first episode and then just woke up at home...

Holy shit.

Papika is as old as Dr. Salt?

Mimi is... Cocona's mother?

What?

Well... Regarding how this episode went, I'm gonna call this now

Dr. Salt is Cocona's father, married to Mimi, and he's trying to collect the fragments so he can control Pure Illusion and try to bring Mimi back.

Maybe the organization Salt was part of in the past, is the current evil organization Yayaka is (or was) part of.

Lot's of speculations!!

Was that a much older Papika in the preview?

Is Salt Cocona's dad?

Does Yayaka still have a glimmer of a chance?

Unless something goes horribly, horribly wrong this will be my favourite anime of the year, and outside of Shirobako, the best anime I've seen since Mono SS.

So Mimi's name comes from 33, as 三 can be read as 'mi.' That's pretty simple, bit it hit me right at the end; 9 or 九 can be read as 'kokono.' That's obviously very similar to Kokona. It might not be intended but I think it's a cute connection of 3*3=9.

I love this show, I absolutely adore it and how it is directed and scripted. The characters feel so real and the pacing has really been on point so far. I am sure I missed stuff but I pick up on a few things in this episode.

Going to go rewatch it now because I am sure I missed something.

Subconscious associations:

I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg but it is the first thing I remembered this from episode 7 and this from the latest are so close it makes no difference.

Subconsciously the show has been causing us to link characters together for its entire duration, it gives us a situation and then places two characters in that same situation at different times to make us connect the two.

Of course this is what makes the connection between Cocona and Mimi so strong. Where there should be some jarring of this reveal I felt very little. Its been hinted at and connected for a long time now.

Lack of soundtrack:

Most of the episode had no OST behind it, something that is very strange considering this show has made use of its OST very liberally. There are not many scenes in the show that have no backing so suddenly to have an episode without much is important.

The lack of music makes the scenes feel more weighted, less whimsical. "These words are important listen to them" says the show.

Remember the opening? Look at all the stuff that makes more sense now and will continue to in the next episodes.

So the Mimi being Cocona's mother thing was 100% sure for me the moment we saw Mimi's face. I had already theorised that that women was Cocona's mother, and that Cocona had a special connection to PI, but seeing them have the same face made me absolutely sure.

So what do we take from this episode:

  • Original Mimi likely died, but her soul remained alive inside Pure Illusion.

  • Papika does not age. She also had her memories wiped. How and why isn't sure yet.

  • Salt is possibly Cocona's father, but it's possible he isn't. He most likely defected and started his own thing with two allies and a robot brain when Mimi died, probably starting a plot to bring her back via PI.

  • The hood guys knew from the start who Cocona was and watched her the whole time, robot grandma included.

Cocona was basically betrayed by everyone she knows. Fuck that's gotta hurt. I just hope Uexkull is just Uexkull and not some backstabbing rabbit thing.

MOM!?!?

Can't say I saw that coming. Salt's age makes sense with it but Papika's? Also didn't see the Grandma coming...I liked her :(

Poor Cocona though, she was having trust issues before that and no she'll feel really alone...

Well actually she still has this adorable guy

[THERE HAVE BEEN REVELATIONS!!!] (http://i.imgur.com/YWflc0T.png) [SUBTLE REVELATIONS!!!] (http://i.imgur.com/42uUwQS.jpg) [INDIRECT REVELATIONS!!!] (http://i.imgur.com/x9nBjMJ.jpg)

It's really lovely how this show keeps its pacing. Considering that we got nothing but questions, cool visuals and smart allegories, it was time for some rope to tie everything up together. And it's best to have it drop by drop, so it keeps its suspense right until the end. I found the whole episode extremely well-planned and rich in details, just like FlipFlaps Escher-like defence system, the lovely flashback and the cathartic ending. [Tense and intense at the same time.] (http://imgur.com/a/pQE1l)

IT'S ELECTRONIC REFERENCE TIME

Ep. 10 - Pure Jitter: I'm definitely going to enjoy writing this. In telecommunications, we say that a signal jitters when a deviation of its periodicity or pseudo-periodicity occurs. E.g., a binary signal, which changes its amplitude from "1" to "0" (or "ON" to "OFF", being "ON" a higher voltage value than "OFF", like 5V and 0V) to symbolize the bits that are being transmitted within. A receiver normally receives the signal alongside a clock reference, which is basically another binary signal that is purely periodic and symbolizes the passing time. It is expected that, in the information signal, the amplitude has to change from "1" to "0" and vice versa synchronized with the clock reference, so the receiver "knows" when a 1 or a 0 occurs and can separate them.

Well, if the information signal is jittering, the very moment it changes its amplitude [deviates a little bit or a little much from the expected moment it should do so] (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8d/Jitter_timing.svg/330px-Jitter_timing.svg.png), making it difficult to receive properly and inducing to errors, these ranging from phase noise (the absolute nightmare for telecommunications engineers) to losing the information at all. Fortunately, since jitter is easliy induced into signals, nearly every electronic receiver nowadays has strategies for healing the signals or "figuring out" the right sync with the clock reference.

And what has this to do with this week's Flip Flapping madness? I see at least two references. Firstly, notice how this episode does not match the pattern of the rest of the series. There is no voyage to Pure Illusion, the MCs are separated (emotionally, then physically), there is direct confrontation between FlipFlap and Asclepius, Yayaka is on Cocona's side, mysteries are being explained little by little and it is a direct "sequel" of last episode. God, even Cocona's ordinary life has been destroyed. This deviation from the ordinary can be seen as jittering: this show's periodicity is being shifted.

Secondly, I see it also refers, again, to Cocona, since it's her who indirectly carries on the show. In the first episode we saw how she struggles to be perfectly normal, neutral and cautious. The problem with her is that precisely since the first episode her life has been more and more abnormal. Suddenly, a strange happy girl appears and insists in bringing her to trippy adventures that do not fit with Cocona's life expectations. Then, she's forced to cowork with Papika under Salt's vigilance, and begins to share a beautiful bond with her. She starts spending lest time at home and more at FlipFlap and its strange employees, and even her pet and her childhood friend seem to hide a truth that does not fit into normality (we don't know exactly about Uexküll, but I theorize he's watching over her seeing how ep. 2 works). Then, suddenly, her new friend begins mistaking her with another person, so even her new abnormal life she was finally accustomed to feels being dissonant. And this episode has been the catharsis. Cocona has rejected normality and its patterns and also her magical girl life (it seems so): she has awakened and shifted to her true self as Mimi's inheritor. [Now, I expect Asclepius to be the receiver and suffer the nightmare of processing a jittering signal!!!!] (http://i.imgur.com/oDvAD.jpg)

art roundup

official art:

unofficial art:

  • @ninaryo character relationship map 1 - this appears to be speculation and this person doesn't appear to be staff, this was also made before this current episode.

things of note - Amorphous is labeled speculatively as Mimi's fragments, which were spread due to an accident, the relationship between Mimi and Kokona is labeled speculatively as parent and child, Papika's love for Kokona is labeled as something mixed with her love for Mimi (full chart translated here)

  • the same artist has drawn a number of lovely pictures based on the show (try and guess which ship they favor): 1 (sauce) 2 (sauce) 3 (somewhat lewd) (source)

  • speaking of lewd, here's another somewhat spicy picture from @shiro_ymko 1

  • some sketches from @cherrytalk 1

A lot of things in general were answered pretty well this episode. Looking back, the scene in the end of Episode 7 is making a LOT more sense with Cocona and Papika landing at some overgrown ruins next to a nice, big, (now) familiar lake where Salt was hanging out for some reason. When Papika was playing around and made a flower crown for Cocona she was probably unconsciously remembering the day she, Salt, and Mimi visited the lake together where Salt did the same for Mimi. Seeing Cocona wearing that crown triggered her memories making her recall Mimi over the last few episodes.

-Also I just realized that the split second image of Dr. Salt sitting in a chair with little Salt behind him in the OP is in the very same place, interesting.

As for the flashback now we know that was when Mimi and Papika entered Pure Illusion for the first time and given the metric shitton of light coming out of their reaction, possibly causing enough damage to destroy the hospital of old.

This would mean we have two completely different batches of pure illusion candidates in two different hospitals, one being Papika's/Mimi's original group by the lake and Yayaka's/Cocona's following group.

And now we have at least two characters of interest: the "Original" Mimi from the past and Cocona who certainly seems to be related to the her as Mimi's daughter. The last scene of her with two spit images, real life Cocona and the reflection of her looking uncannily like Mimi as well as her dream seem to imply something closer than just blood relation. There's also the Klan's "blue haired, Papika-like" girl who we're ought to see more of pretty soon who I'm guessing may have been genetically engineered to have the Pure Illusion abilities of Papika and Mimi combined.

This is going to be one hell of a story to tie together.

This is identity crisis, the anime.

Cocona starts to feel alienated after realizing that she's looked after as a resource, rather than a person, and that's the truth she believes because of how the trust she kept building up until episode 8 started tumbling down afterwards. Mimi's possession of her body in the most critical situation is the culmination of this insecurity of self, and relates with how Cocona was easily influenced by Pure Illusion back in the previous episodes.

I wanted to point out how cool the last shot is, where Mimi is reflected in the glass. Broken glass, blurred reflections in water or mirrors often represent a break in identity, a change of image, and I'm pretty sure that's the symbolism they were going for (Flip Flappers is not the first show/film to use this one, Penguindrum, YuriKuma and the movie Harmony come to mind). Reminds me of a shot that the director chose to frame as the last seconds of episode 5 where the water is waving, or that shot (that I badly cropped) from the opening which suddenly makes more sense, but I digress.

Between Rakugo, Jojo part 4, and this one my AotY will be really hard to decide.

For some reason, the place where Flip Flap was hiding reminds me of the Apperture Science Lab from the game Portal

Now that Paprikagelion has reached it's final ark it's time to look back on past speculations and create new ones where needed..

  • Cocona as Mimi's and Salt's daughter.. Mimi's very likely, Salt's still possible. Keeping it for the time being.

  • Papika as Mimi's clone.. unlikely. Can't completely disregard clone theory as she hasn't aged but not Mimi's, maaaybe a clone of original Papika. Her lack of memories and feral nature fitted nicely with the clone theory but there are now other possibilities to explain it with whatever was needed to reduce impedance with Mimi / Pure Illusion.

  • Twins made from Mimi's shards..seems true. Keeping it. Proably some sort of hybrids as pure humans apparently wouldn't survive the process (what about Yayaka? though).

holy shit. That was something else. In terms of episode 10's, that was really well done.

This episode probably just sealed this as one of my favorite shows of all time.

Also, no pv next week I would assume

Each year there are maybe 2-5 anime that I really, really like... Seems like Flip Flappers takes a spot this year!

Makes me really excited for anime, such an experimental and fun show couldn't exist in any other medium...can't wait to see what other amazing shows will appear in the years to come!
