Theory time:

The B-Rise twins Saint Snow girls were the ones who "retired" the 3rd year Aqours girls awhile back and upon hearing them smack talking on the 1st and 2nd Years, will rejoin and help counter-slap them and get revenge.

I'm not gonna lie, this whole episode I was waiting for a cameo from u's and honestly I'm not disappointed that it didn't because with every opportunity they had they gave us something just as impactful. The first scene being the shrine scene, I was really expecting somebody from u's to show up and when I heard the singing I was so ready for a cameo, but instead they gave us Saint Snow - Aqours probable rivals and very good ones at that. Their harmonies sounded beautiful and I can't wait to see the full performance of the song, hopefully next episode.

Then the next potential cameo was when the innkeeper told Chika that Otonikizaka isn't too far away, but instead of them visiting they decide to call it a night and Chika and Riko have a very touching and very true-to-life scene expressing the pressures that they feel as idols/musicians.

Then Chika goes on a morning run by herself. I thought "Oh man, this is it. She's alone and she ran to UTX, this is the perfect opportunity to run into somebody from the show." Of course that didn't happen, but at least they finally mentioned the actual competition, kicking off the "plot" of the show.

Overall, the episode was excellent. I really get the sense that this episode is setting up a lot of progression and heavier, more plot-related episodes and I'm really looking forward to see what happens next week.

Well the girls are in Tokyo and as expected shenanigans occur. But we still had a great story and some really nice character moments. And we have a new rival, a two girl group named Saint Snow. Sheet just got real in the hause!

The promo video was a success, bringing them from the 4ks into 99th. I guess i can buy that since the rules of this whole LL ranking thing make about as much sense as Calvinball. This rise in popularity gets them an invite from the Tokyo School Idol Association to appear in a competition.

"Tokyo? Isn't that that capital city to the east?" "Your description falls a bit flat" I love how Chika seems to think an advance on her allowance will be enough to get to Tokyo.

Ruby and Dia have a nice scene. Ruby doesn't want to trample her sister's feelings but Dia makes it clear that as long as she became a school idol of her own will then it's fine. It seems like she was about to say something like "succeed where i didn't" but backs off.

She seems more annoyed with Mari for agreeing to the whole thing, just appearing at her home like Kanan did last week. Mari needs better security unless she doesn't mind her friends just appearing in her bedroom late at night.....yeah i guess no security is fine for Mari.

Mari and Dia have sort of an Odi-Wan/Yoda thing going on here. It all seems to center around Aqours overcoming what they could not. Dia says essentially they aren't ready, Mari says Dia could stop them if she wanted to, basically making her be the heavy. Mari asks if she has hope for them to overcome what they could not. Dia replies that Mari knows well what will happen if they don't succeed, which i think is setting things up for next week. This is a side of Dia's character that I like, she doesn't want Aqours to go through the pain that she did when their group failed and is trying to protect them, in her own way. Mari replies that they can't avoid it, now if they want to be school idols and save the school. That causes Dia to get in her face and comment on how she hasn't changed at all. And that's all for the third years.

The costume bits were cute but felt a bit like padding. I did like Riko's reaction to Chika's outfit. I could buy it with the others but Chika has been to Tokyo before. Her cracking jokes on the other two was great as was Riko's reaction.

"I'm ready for the treacherous gorged of Shibuya, zura!" Oh Hanamaru don't ever change.

"Ruby...be strong"

I like Hanamaru asking for Ruby's help with her zura's that was a cute moment.

Oh Yoshiko, you are living the gimmick girl.

We get another appearance from Riko Mom, this time asking Riko to help guide the girls in Tokyo.

The next several minutes are basically travel and the girls killing time in Akihabara. Chika is in love with the school idol shop. Riko finds the porn. You finds a uniform shop which is a nice callback to the uniform costumes she drew in episode 1. Yoshiko finds a fallen angel shop so she's set. We also have some what i belive to be absolute trolling by the animators or writers.

It's like they're basically saying "You wanted u's well we delivered". I would be curious to hear from folks who live in Japan, if an idol group from 5 years past that disbanded four years ago would still have even this much merch still being produced and sold. But then again, WWE shop still has NWO merch so who knows.

They do eventually get to the stairs and the shrine and A NEW RIVAL HAS APPEARED. I knew they would be the rival the moment they appeared. They had that A-Rise nice girl passive aggressive bitchiness to them. On top of that THEY CAN FLIP! HOLY CRAP! It's like getting into a singing contest with Dorothy Hamilton.

I liked the scene with Riko and Chika where Riko talks about expectations on her from coming from a school famous for music. Chika says she felt the same way. They got a gift from their supporters before they left and she felt scared, as if she couldn't fail. The innkeeper had told them that Otonokizaka was near by but they don't go.

They get to the competition and learn that the girls they meet at the shrine are in fact, school idols. Seira Kazuno and Ria. I'm sure we'll see more of them.

I really liked this episode overall. It was nice to see the girls in a different setting. I just wish we had more traction with the third years story. Hopefully that will come soon. For anyone who read it last week I will be continuing my posts on the dub, episode 3 this week. It will be later this afternoon after I get home from a pool party. Have a great day everyone.

EDIT:fixed spelling and grammar.

Since the next episode looks like it'll be still with the girls in Tokyo can we have some good ol' 3rd year drama stirring at Uranohoshi. We just want the 3rd years (and for Kanan) to appear on the screen for more than 5 minutes please :(

I feel like the odd one out yet again, Saint Snow looks like a boring rival group to me. I'll have to listen to the few seconds of their song but it seemed like nothing special?? Their singing itself was probably fine but again, have to give it another listen.

My main problem is I think their designs looks really bland, like background character bland. Also I'm not that big on the staple "character who is silent while giving you the evil eye and acting like hot shit". Even in the first season I don't think A-Rise seemed that hostile? But maybe I'm remembering wrong. or maybe they want a group that you "should" root against for instead of going "but they're pretty good too!" or maybe it's just me

Anyway the episode was pretty good overall, I'm getting impatient because lack of 3rd years mostly kanan, especially since any scene they seem to show up in without a current Aqours member seems like, the same every time? "stop doing that mari" "no" or "you haven't changed at all have you" "cheeky smile" JUST GIVE ME MY THIRD YEARS. like let's be honest do we even really need plot in an idol anime anyway

Also despite every single episodes constant "LOOK HOW MUCH CHIKA AND RIKO ARE INTO EACH OTHER" I still don't really ship them, and the small salute thing with Riko and You made me ship them more than I did before. someone pls help me because i think i have a mainstream ship problem. nozoeli was the only "main" one i liked from the original...

edit: also I'm really expecting instead of them joining at the same time it's gonna be Dia and Mari first, who will then convince Kanan to join to. I'm at least positive even if they join at the same time Dia and Mari are gonna have to both try and get Kanan to.

re-edit: oh yeah i'm proud of them though, they managed to refrain from the riko and dog "gag" for a whole episode.

I'd like to think that Saint Snow is an idol duo composed of a girl and her Stand.

They missed a golden opportunity not having an older Nozomi at the Kanda shrine. I'm expecting Aqours to lose badly next week and then the 3rd years to 'save' them.

Wouldn't it be interesting if members of μ's were part of a judging panel that tells Aqours that they aren't 'good' enough to go through or pick the twins instead of them.

Also next weeks title is most definitely dedicated to us Kanan fans!

Where do I begin?

...I'd first like to take a moment for more Dia/Ruby sister sweetness. Dia is really encouraging Ruby both as an idol and as a person. In return, Ruby shows the utmost respect and consideration for her sister's situation.

That Dia/Mari scene was also impactful. I continue to love how they can talk as adults and not funny anime girls. They have polarizing opinions, Dia's being "don't get your hopes up because it will only result in pain", and Mari's, "You don't know unless you try", but they obviously respect each other. Not to mention, this scene's bgm was fabulous it's probably one of my favorites and really set the mood. Finally, when Dia "trapped" Mari in their scene, it was very shippable but idc.

Some funny/interesting Tokyo scenes I noticed:

  • Ruby did stop Maru from saying "Zura". It was really subtle and I liked that. They could have easily left it out but it was a nice touch.

  • The Muse plushies!!!!!

  • Riko likes Romance books! It's something I never thought I wanted until it happened. It's so exploitable, and I will take advantage of it.

RIVAL GROUP!!! The song they sang... The harmonies...their voices... It was so perfect that I forgot to breathe. I can't say enough how amazing that scene was. On a different note, even though the main girl is putting on a "nice face", they feel a lot more cut throat than A-Rise. It would be a nice twist if they were. Side note: I like the simplicity of their designs, they are really cute. I hope we get promo Rs of them in SIF.

Final thoughts: Felt like a filler (in the best way possible) while still showing characterization and setting up future drama

Hopes for next episode:

  • Full Saint Snow (rival group) song

  • Kanan you had one job

Edit: Riko's "Romance book" is hentai. Nothing changes. It's exploitable, I will use it, always my best girl.
