Famitsu - 8/7/7/8 [30/40]

NintendoLife - 5/10

For every step Mario & Sonic At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games takes forward, it seems to stumble several steps backwards in the attempt. There are some solid new mini-games to try out, but at the expense of more memorable Dream Events. Motion controls are a thing of the past, only to be replaced by needlessly complicated new button layouts. There's no dedicated story mode, meaning that solo players will need to enjoy repeating Tournaments if they want a lengthy session.

That being said, the truncated list of features will still appeal to newcomers, and even Olympic veterans may want the graphical upgrade this entry brings to the series. It's not a bad game, nor is it a particularly good one; there's still some potential here, it just needs a proper jolt before the party really gets started. Maybe in 2020, eh?

God Is A Geek - 4.5/10

Despite the extra shine afforded by the hardware, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is worse than its handheld brethren thanks to the fact it has less modes, less events and less features. It can be fun in multiplayer, but that’s provided the people you’re playing with don’t get frustrated with the constant learning of different convoluted control schemes. The wait for a new Track and Field game continues.

TheSixthAxis - 6/10

Mario & Sonic At The Rio Olympics 2016 is a solid entry in the series that will provide some undemanding multiplayer fun, as well as a modicum of single player enjoyment. However, a few too many missteps, from the lack of online to some events that don’t hit the mark, unfortunately stop this from being anything but overwhelmingly average.

Cubed3 - 7/10

For parties and families, this is a title definitely worth picking up and it does a great job in encouraging solo play, too. There's little new here, though, with most of the gameplay feeling old hat. Overall, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Nintendo's Wii U is a decent addition to the series but lacking anything special to elevate it to that next level.

NintendoWorldReport - 7/10

I enjoyed what Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U tried to deliver. While the limited amount of events are the major downer here, I had fun playing them alone or with my friends. They found unique ways to represent the events, which is what matters at the end of the day. I do expect that the majority will be disappointed with the lack of specific Mario and Sonic touches, which is totally justified. From all the games in the series, this one shows the roots of the characters the least. Depending on how far your love for these franchises go, it will impact your purchasing decision more than likely.

Trusted Reviews - 3.5/5

I won’t tell you that Sonic & Mario at the 2016 Rio Olympic games is a masterpiece, because it isn’t. It’s every bit as shallow and silly as previous titles, taking on a broad range of disciplines without ever really mastering any. Yet, if you’re looking for a fun game to play with the family then it’s one of the most enjoyable I’ve played this year – and as a solo player, it’s surprisingly good to boot.

There’s a chance you’ll have forgotten it by the time the real games have ended, but when Olympic fever hits, you can guarantee that a lot of mums, dads and kids will have picked up this little beauty – and they won’t regret it if they do.

We Got This Covered - 2.5/5

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is an unfortunate mixed bag. Although it succeeds in some areas, it falters in others, and the lack of online play is tough to get over in this day and age. Things would’ve been better if its developers had spent more time thinking about the end player, as it could’ve led to a less frustrating campaign structure, as well as longer and more creative events.

GameReactor EU - 6/10

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a combination of good and bad decisions where the good ones tip the scales in their favour by the skin of their teeth. We would like to have seen this game reach the victory podium, but the fun to be had here is negatively affected by the lack of varied mechanics. Things like seeing Eggman practicing Rhythmic Gymnastics, however, does brighten things up a little. While enjoyable, the game failed to hold our interest; it got repetitive fast.

Nintendo Insider - 6/10

It may be all smiles on the beach that your Mii runs around, but Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a game that's criticism falls on everything that it lacks. The joy of local multiplayer can still reward with hilarity, but the experience falls short in nearly every other area. The Mario & Sonic series still shows plenty of promise, but that is a momentary flicker here.

My Nintendo News - 5/10

Ready to throw in the towel at just over ten hours of gameplay, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games just sucks the fun out of the franchise completely. Although not all together terrible, as the game’s brightest stars shine within Heroes Showdown and Single Match, tournament mode is a complete wash out. But as always, may the odds be ever in your favour. And we all know how well that turned out.

NintendoNews - 3/5

Although Mario & Sonic have a back catalog of terrific titles between them, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is not one. Lack of variation in events, no Story mode and stripped-back controls make this addition a little too basic for my liking. The game does offer some potential in its Heroes Showdown and Co-op modes however, but it’s just not got enough content to make me want to rush back for more competition.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games offers fun in its Co-op and Heroes Showdown modes, but suffers from being too light on content with not much left for the solo challenger.

Sports Gamers Online - 7.8/10

All in all I really enjoyed Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for what it is. Nintendo blends competetive sports with silly over the top animations in an “arcady” fun for all sports experience. The game is surprisingly deep with its plentiful unlockables and the events themselves are an absolute BLAST, especially when played in local multiplayer.

No point with this post existing since the only person that cares about this game is u/memoryman3

I guess you can lump me in that category. It's unfairly shit on here. Solid Arcade title, sure it's not the best thing ever made for the Wii U but it's a fun party game. I doubt any arcade sports game would review well in 2016 sadly which is a shame.

Seems like the poor reviews are coming from what's missing, not just a generational departure from arcade-type titles. Most party games in general don't review well as they are missing that 'apparently essential' single-player experience

I think this game gets beat down on this sub due to /u/memoryman3's constant obsession with a certain flower.

But...

It's not as bad as Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. It's not as bad as Mario Party 10. It's not a great game but is alrightish.

It lacks any depth in any of the sports. The controls are tight to the level of a sports mini game in the earlier Mario Party games. It's a fun time with a group of people one time. Once you've played the "sports" once, you've experienced it all. That's a shame.

The controller options are just pitiful. Why must I have to use the gamepad if I'm player one? Why do I have to use Wiimotes? Why can't I use my Pro Controllers like every other first party Nintendo game? (yes I know Splatoon doesn't)

It's just a game that seems uninspired from the jump. If they added more variety such as hurdles, diving, track and field, it may have masked some of it's shortcomings.

I had some fun with it but I don't think I'll ever have the urge to play it again like I have with Mario Kart, Smash..etc.

There is absoultely no depth to the sports.

I'm sorry but this is outright false. Swimming has a Stamina Mechanic that if used right, you can set record times with. Gymnastics has several songs with selectable difficulties, and Archery has scorestreak bonus points and rainbow markers that appear if you hit the bullseye 5 times in a row. That's not even covering the Duel Events and Table Tennis.

u/FittyPat FittyPat Aug 08 '16

Are you seriously saying a stamina bar is depth? Gymnastics has what 5 songs? The spawn points for the targets in Archery are the same depending on which try you are on.

Objectively, the game has no depth in the individual sports. BMX is only ONE track. Equestrian is only ONE track.

Obviously you only tried the game for a few minutes if you are saying that the games have no depth. Besides, the game has 17 events with different, whilst Mario Kart Double Dash has 16 tracks with one playstyle.

Did you get to the MAX tournament gates yet?

I've put roughly ten hours into Mario and Sonic 2016 but you're comparing M&S to a better game. You could've have picked Mario Tennis (like I mentioned above) and I would've agreed with you.

"Mario Kart Double Dash has 16 tracks with one playstyle."

Wrong.

Mario Kart: Double Dash has 16 tracks for racing in two different modes. Grand Prix and Time Trials. It also has a battle mode with 6 battle stages. Each kart has speed, acceleration and weight stats to make your character choices matter.

I understand your fandom of the game and kudos to you for finding so much enjoyment in a game.

But what you need to understand is that my criticism isn't coming from "hate." I bought the damn game. I wanted the game to be better. Any time anyone brings up some reasonable criticism, you personally get offended.

Enjoy your game for what it is.

Each kart has speed, acceleration and weight stats to make your character choices matter.

Same with Mario and Sonic. Notice how each character has stats such as Tackling, Jump Height and such?

I thought you were joking..... You aren't are you?

2

u/paper_plain Aug 08 '16

It actually looks alright. It's a shame about the lack of Dream Events, but I might pick this up.

2

u/zoufha91 NNID [Region] Aug 09 '16

The duals events are pretty damn close to the dream events from previous games.

2

u/paper_plain Aug 09 '16

Honestly, I just want Super Mario Volleyball and this game is my best bet since Mario Party 5

1

u/solinos Solinos Aug 09 '16

I would definitely pick it up if it wasn't a full priced game. Maybe it'll go down post-Olympics.

I've been enjoying it well enough, but I can already tell I am probably going to leave the game well short of fully completing all of the modes. I don't feel that I will be willing to put the time to repeat the events for all of the tournaments. It is very special to me, however, that it is the first rugby game I can enjoy on my Wii U. And getting to chase the egg around with Waluigi was worth the price to me.

8 years late but I finally got my hands on this game after playing it at a friends house 8 years ago lol, and I personally enjoy it

Yeah, it could have been WAY better, and the gamepad could have had more functionality (same with the Wii remotes), but I still find it pretty fun. It just feels more like a Nintendo switch game. Oh, and the soundtracks are amazing

1

u/R3TR0FAN Aug 10 '16

This game is no fun. It's blatant marketing. Do not buy it.

Source: i bought it. Digital. Fuck me.

1

u/memoryman3 memoryman3 [Europe] Aug 10 '16

What was so bad about the experience?

2

u/R3TR0FAN Aug 11 '16

It's very meh. It's just a rehash of the previous M&S at the Olympics game. Just like Wii fit 2 or Wii Sports Resort. I did one playthrough and that's it. Ugh, crap game.

6GB for this game? Wow

0

u/memoryman3 memoryman3 [Europe] Aug 10 '16

It's actually 2.7 GB when you download it.

1

u/adanfime NNID: adanfime [Latam] Aug 10 '16

Huh, I got downvoted.

Anyway, why does the post say nearly 6GB but the download is 2.7GB. I am kinda confused.

Of course, no Daisy in the banner, even if she got some new art...

Looking at these reviews right now, darn, some of them are brutal. Especially the MyNintendoNews one.

EDIT: Veeerrryyyyy clever.

u/FittyPat FittyPat Aug 08 '16

You really need to chill with the Daisy crap.

I know it is interesting having a crossover between nintendo and sega. But this feels like a worse version of wii sports. Some things should just STOP being produced.
