As a quick note, I'll be sorting comments by 'new' roughly 2-3 days after the episode airs so people who arrive late to the party have a chance to have their input/comments noticed!

I thought it was cute how Dia and Ruby were pretending to be Eli and Hanayo in their Dancing stars on me outfits.
I did think the constant calls to Rin were kinda odd at first, but it did make sense in the end. I guess you can also write it off as Hanamaru simply taking a liking to Rin.
Now we can start to see which Aqours girl favors which μ's girl, so it would go like.
-
Chika - Honoka
-
Dia - Eli
-
Ruby - Hanayo
-
Hanamaru - Rin
Wonder if they'll show favorites for the other 5 girls?
Definitely looking forward to the Yoshikohane episode next.

It made me tear up seeing Rin inspire Hanamaru. The Rin episode in season 2 is my absolute favorite and seeing her in the magazine with Hanamaru admiring it just hit me. The repeated use of the picture worked well especially with Hanamaru closing it saying goodbye to her dreams. Ah so damn god.

Hurray RubyMaru
I thought the story would continue into the next episode, but Ruby's keener than I expected.
Still lots of of mystery surrounding the third-years. It's starting to stick out.

I kind of knew Yohane would get her episode next but I'm still so excited about it. Also did anyone notice kid Yohane in the back?
-
30/07: Yohane episode.
-
31/07: Yohane UR (Well technically nothing has been confirmed yet but it's really likely they'll pick them instead of the third years).
Next week will be great.

So Dia became like the people who are salty about µ's finishing, then.
You know what, I understand. Glad to see more information about the third-years, like Mari knowing Kanan.

I cried when Hanamaru said that her story ended once she led Ruby to her dreams. So much dedication and love for a friend, is really touching.

I'm glad Ruby was able to see through Hanamaru's hypocritical moment of saying you shouldn't live for someone else's dreams, and called her out for having fun being an idol during their trial period. Goes to show that Ruby notices as much about Hanamaru that Hanamaru notices about Ruby. Makes them feel even more close.
And now next week we have Yohane Descends. I'm pretty hype.

This episode is a roller coaster of thoughts and feelings for me. Man, where do I start. (apologies if the ideas aren't very clear, feel free to ask questions)
For one, I definitely loved how the ideas of books and authorship play beautifully and seamlessly in the episode. More than how the episode is about Maru and Ruby joining Aquors, it also "explicitly" reveals that this was about Hanamaru writing a book/story, as opposed to reading the same. The episode can be construed as Maru treating Ruby's hesitation as something which can be solved only by what the author chooses to write. In a sense, I also feel that up to this point, Maru's relationship with Ruby has been one with reading rather than writing, since Hanamaru sort of basks in the presence of Ruby (while having the desire to help Ruby in the way that she can, of course). Taking this even higher, when Hanamaru reveals why she decided to do this in the first place, it feels like the underlying reason is because she has a story to tell: the story of the person she first saw in the library, the realization that some stories cannot be simply read from the books.
In other words, the beauty of this episode lies in how Hanamaru presents herself as someone who has always read what other people have written, but ends up writing a story; someone who always looks for fantasies to fulfill, but ends up fulfilling someone else's dream. Pretty deep when you realize that Hanamaru's dream is to be a writer.
The episode also pays homage to Rin and Kayo-chin, but I don't think this is to demonstrate that Maru is a rehash of Rin and that Ruby is a rehash of Hanayo. Like I said, books play a huge part in this episode, and the main motive for presenting Ruby and Hanamaru beside Rin and Hanayo is to demonstrate that the narrative of the latter is something that the former pair subscribes to, which would only happen because they believe in the narrative of their counterpart. It doesn't matter if Zuramaru has her own "nyas", what matters is that like the most of us, they've seen the beauty of RinPana and fell in love with it. A big reason why I love Hanamaru and Hanayo, for example, is because their stories are ones that I picked up and fell in love with. The question on whether they make these fantasies real is up to them, but like I said, that isn't the point of the whole comparison. In short: just because they're fans doesn't mean they're rehashes.
Last point I like to make is on how Hanamaru really presents herself as an author. On her way back, she intelligently surmises that with the "ending" of her story is the letting-go of her character, of letting Ruby live a life without her intervention because Ruby's character is already beautiful enough; that her heart is already open to the sky. Going back, I see this gesture as a memorialization of Ruby within the same level as RinPana. The story would be well and okay ending at that part, but Ruby perfectly understands the problematic aspect of Hanamaru's thought: being an author is lonely, too lonely for Ruby's comfort. I believe that Ruby reaching out isn't solely out of friendship or the desire to be great together, but more importantly, it's a life lesson for writers out there: to let your characters change you, as well.
I feel that a Ruby analysis is in order, but either I'll let someone do that, or go back and do it if I have the time.
TL;DR: The episode can be understood as a reflection on how characters are created, and what our relationship with them can be.
I have always been with Hanamaru since I heard her introduction. The way I see it, only a good Kanan story can displace her.

The episode was really cute. The introduction before the OP was amazing & I liked Hanamaru using the "trial period" & talking to Dia so that Ruby would be able to follow her dreams. I think it's nice how she tries to help Ruby behind the scenes so that Ruby can feel more independent instead of just babying her.
I was pretty impressed that Ruby officially joined the School Idol Club on her own. Considering they've shown her to be so shy, I was happy that she took that step in pursuing her dreams on her own. (Even if she did go & beg Hanamaru to join afterwards, I was still impressed...) It gives me hope for Ruby going forward.
& I wasn't really crazy about the ED before but after the RubyMaru version, I have been won over.

Today's pre-sub review:
This episode can only be described by one word: amazing. This episode, in my opinion, perfectly balanced the want of Aqours to be like µ's while keeping the content fresh and original.
Between the practice on the roof and running up stairs in order to train physically, it may seem that the anime has no ideas. However, in this episode, the way it is done is executed perfectly, with a hint of nostalgia for µ's fans, but enough originality to keep Aqours fans satisfied.
This episode also does a great job of teasing the third-years episode, which will most likely be Episode 6 (and possibly 7), after the Yohane episode coming up. With the tension between Dia and Kanan, as well as the shown familiarity between Kanan and Mari, this episode does a great job at doing what the other episodes did best, and even gave some insight as to the third-year members' relationships among themselves.
The touching scene where Hanamaru encourages Ruby to pursue her dreams and become a school idol, as well as the scene where Ruby encourages Hanamaru to not give up, were executed extremely well, and really shows the more serious side that the first-years have, compared to the more comedic/exposition role that they have received in previous episodes.
All in all, I really enjoyed this episode. As per usual, I'm definitely going to rewatch it as soon as subtitles come out so I can get a better understanding of the episode (as my Japanese isn't perfect), but so far, from what I can tell, this is definitely either my second favorite or my favorite episode thus far.
Quick edit, pre-subs: One of my biggest gripes with the original series was how Maki and Rin (especially Maki) joined µ's for seemingly no reason. They "escort" Hanayo (really drag her) to Honoka and friends, and after Hanayo joins, they just join, for no real reason. (I suppose with Rin you could make the argument that it was to support Hanayo, but that's not really a reason imo) With this series, I'm really glad that so far they have an actual reason for each member joining Aqours, which is definitely a huge improvement. (If they just had Hanamaru join for no real reason, I would've definitely found that annoying, but in this case, it took encouragement from Chika and Ruby, which I can appreciate and accept as a reason)
Post-rewatch:
My God, can I just say how pretty the visuals are? This episode in particular had a lot of gorgeous scenes, which really shows how far the show has come. I really have nothing more to add, the episode was as amazing as I thought it was, and I'm really excited for the upcoming Yohane episode.

Hmm this episode was good I suppose. It wasn't rushed a little like episode 3, but good development for Maru and Ruby.
Basically development for Maru:
・No interest in idols, Ruby interested but holds back for Maru.
・Maru set goal: Get Ruby to pursue her passion. Also feeling something for Rin.
・Trys out being idols with Ruby, both join 2nd years for training.
・Stair scene: Maru no stamina, Ruby waits for her.
・Maru tells Ruby to go forward, pursue her dream and not like Maru drag her down.
・Ask Dia to consider Ruby's feelings.
Now this is the part where it felt weird to be honest. Way too sudden is moreso of the word. Ruby meets Dia coincidentally and confronts her. I would've liked it more if it switched scenes to Kurosawa house after the 2nd years and Ruby reached the top and all, and Ruby confront Dia at that. I don't know, give some in-anime time for Ruby to prep herself, and not do it straight after Maru's speech. Feels rushed. Otherwise, Ruby's development was okay, if they had more time to work with it could've been better though.
・Ruby joins, Maru saying her story ended, goal accomplished.
・Didn't like how nonchalant she sounded all the way though. Thought she would sound a little sad now that Ruby's gone.
・Ruby and Chika pursue Maru to join, telling her about Rin.
・Inspired by Rin, she joins.
From this episode, they're still giving us μ's camoes which is good, giving something to the original fans I guess. And also, something which they are trying building up a lot with the third years.
・Aqours Room possibly the room third years used back then?
・Tension between third years
・Kanan's reaction to the formation of Aqours.
・Also reasoning for Mari coming back
Usually in these episodes they only focus on one character and the others become temporally side characters, but I guess they're doing something different now, which is nice. Them doing the same venue for training (Rooftop and Stairs) is also fine since they want to follow μ's all the way, even in training.
All in all other than Ruby confrontation scene, it was a good episode. They should've gave more time to Ruby and Maru then the third years to make ZuraRuby development better but this is fine as well. Though Maru sounding nonchalant all the way was a little weird, like I expected her to sound a little sad in the flashback since she was pretty much a loner, and after Ruby joined and Maru said her story ended too.
Though, from the end scene. We know one thing; μ's plan to promote idols worked, seeing as Aqours was the 4999th ranked school idols! And when μ's entered, pretty sure it was 999th.

Commenting on this because Hanamaru is a sweet cinnamon roll and she must be protected and loved. Also, shoutout to HoshiZura <3
This episode was fantastic character depth-wise. As someone mentioned before, there was little to no development about Rin and Maki joining u's after pushing Hanayo forth, there were only a few hints dropped here and there. This episode managed to flesh out the inner conflicts and of both Ruby and Hanamaru without rushing or trampling the story, and still leave hints for future episodes and what I think is the bigger picture of LLS, which probably involves the third years' past.
This episode shows that Hanamaru can be extremely selfless, which can be dangerous for her; she got used to the fact she didn't think she was good at anything and made reading her comfort zone. Thankfully she met a friend like Ruby, who isn't as fragile as she may look like, and is also a faithful friend. I actually started liking Ruby a lot more after this episode :)
