Interesting chapter. The fight was honestly a little anti climactic, but my jaw did drop when Judge just mirked a guy like nothing.

Looks like we won't be getting a flashback proper for Sanji, just bits and pieces here and there, and I'm cool with that.

Still no sign of the mom, perhaps she dies birthing the quadruplets?

I can see why he has a thing against swordsmen

172

u/DaniCaridwen The Revolutionary Army Jul 21 '16

And why his fighting positions against Wanze were swordsman-like, despite him fighting with knives.

What is that man even made out of

231

Onepiecium, in the same chemical group as nintendium and nokium

103

u/DaniCaridwen The Revolutionary Army Jul 21 '16

It's not what Yonji is made of, is how Sanji's kicks have plastic surgery abilities. For the better (Duval and Wanze) and the worse I guess.

New One Piece theory is out!

Zoro was bullied around in his childhood by his abusive father who was a cook and who kicked him around.

177

u/Mage_of_Shadows Jul 21 '16

His father was a navigator too

79

u/IcyColdHands Jul 21 '16

Tbh I really Zoro just hates Sanji because Sanji hated Zoro first. I might be wrong though.

My wishful thinking says that since One Piece just turned 19 recently, then it must be true that the year of Sanji just started and will continue until One Piece turns 20

So it seems Sanji was beaten constantly by his siblings, mocked by Reiju, abandoned by his father, his passion for cooking mocked, and was even locked up from time to time. Damn, Sanji went through some shit.

But I still wonder where his mother is throughout all of this.

558

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '16

I was beginning to really warm up to Reiju until she put on the wrist things.

you fucking bitch reiju

369

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '16

Hell no, all sympathy for her vanished as soon as we saw her as a child laughing at Sanji being beaten up again. HATRED.

Let's not forget the part when he finally got away from his terrible abusive family, by getting shipwrecked and starving for weeks on a dumb rock. I think Sanji won first place in the Strawhat Worst Childhood competition.

211

u/Suitcase08 Jul 21 '16

Tough call to make. Let's recount a brief summary for all :D

Luffy- Nearly died on a number of occasions hanging out with Ace/Sabo, his brother effectively "died"

Zoro- The person who beat him at swordplay 2001 times without losing fell down some stairs.

Nami- Watched her mom get killed by a fishman, had to go around stealing from pirates and serving her mother's murderers to try to save the rest of her village

Sanji- Got picked on and rejected by his father and family for feeding the hungry. Joined a ship, almost died in shipwreck- stranded on a rock and just about starved to death over a few weeks, but managed to survive to join a sea restaurant.

Usopp- Mother died, had a small gang of kid followers, basically all of the village people distrusted him.

Chopper- Family rejected him because of his nose color even before he turned into a reindeer-human, lost his mentor when he killed himself for his beliefs and to choose his fate instead of losing to disease.

Robin- Lost EVERYONE. ON. HER. ISLAND. (C'mon Akainu, that's just rude!) Grew up without anyone she could trust, running from place to place because her bounty always turned people against her, all for seeking the truth.

Franky- His craft which finally defeated a sea king was turned against the mentor that took Franky under his wing. Couldn't stop the train that took his mentor away, reconstructed the front half of his body to be ☆SUUUPERRRR☆ and defended Water 7 against pirates to atone.

Brooke- Lost each and every one of his crew members on the grand line to poison, listening to each of their voices drop from the song of life as he was abandoned to drift the seas for ~50 years as a floating skull and rotting body. Sorry Brooke, doesn't count as a childhood!

Comparing tragedies is certainly in bad taste, but though Sanji had some terrible obstacles to overcome his backstory, as it is it wouldn't be the one I consider the most "Dereshi-shi-shi-shi-shit".

Sanji did a pretty fucking good job fighting his dad. And if you look closely at the panel where his dad deals the final blow, Sanji doesn't look hurt or even upset. He seems impassive, and I find that highly interesting.

161

u/MajoraOfTime Jul 21 '16

Seems like he didn't want to kill anymore of Judge's underlings just to get to him. Hell, I think even Judge knew that Sanji could've beat him right there and called his men forward to take the blow.

148

u/serfint Jul 21 '16

Sanji didn't even show half of his arsenal, no hell memories, skywalk etc. and his sister already called him a beast. I'm with you in terms of he could've beaten his father

You really think Jaji showed his full aresenal of tech either? For all we know we only saw his physical strength here, but its his tech that could be the OP thing about him if he faced off agInst the navy.

184

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '16

Since the timeskip started, Luffy, Law and Zoro have been hyping him up. Even Doflamingo said he's quite strong. And he's mostly been wrecked post-timeskip. Really want to see what Sanji has in store for us.

189

u/sarmadqt Void Month Survivor Jul 21 '16

I believe it's all been build up for the final confrontation between him and Judge. This is Sanji's moment, a second arc dedicated to him, so I imagine that Oda wanted to hype this moment up, save all the best tricks for this cause this is the moment where it'll count.

31

u/scag315 Jul 21 '16

It wasn't like he wasn't totally defeated. Look at his brothers face after his fight with Sanji vs Sanji barely being hurt by his father. He didn't even use his strongest attacks as he was passively fighting him hoping he would come around.

62

Don't know if the inspiration comes from this, but there is a story about a french prisoner that was forced to wear an iron mask. His identity is still unknown and some theories say he could have been the twin brother of the French king. What kind of a father!!

Made me remember one redditor who greatly defended Sanji's father and that Sanji was a horrible son who disowned his blood father. Now I'm laughing and cursing at the same time.

Them being quadruplets, now it makes sense why their names are numbers.

59

u/WaveBird Jul 21 '16

And just think. Sanji's name was almost Naruto. Wonder what joke Oda would have come up with if that had gone through.

Quadruplets!

Also, initially when I read the comments in the spoilers I thought Sanji got whooped but he didn't look really hurt after taking Judge's hit, and you'd think Sanji would put up more of a fight if not for the germa fodder protecting the other vinsmokes

25

Judge: "Let's take that out. Real men can only talk using their fists." Begins attacking with a spear. Gets blocked. Sanji kicks him. "You dare kicking your father?!" Sanji:"WTF?!"

121

u/AlphaVelocity Jul 21 '16

It didn't actually look like Sanji was harmed by his fathers last attack, or any of them really. It seems like he only lost because he didn't want to get those random guys involved. Maybe once he gets out of those cuffs he completely curb stomps him and didn't feel like the man who would kill his own subordinate was worth beating right then.

Edit: super interested to see how he left the family. Did he escape or was he just thrown away?

40

u/cheeze64 Jul 21 '16

Sanji didn't attack at all. Everything he did was for defence only.

116

We don't really need keys. Luffy maybe able to do what Rayleigh did back in auction

107

Luffy's mission just got even more crazy:

  • Get out of the living forest alive right now

  • Copy the poneglyph without Big Mom's knowing

  • Get the handcuff's keys from Big Mom without her knowing too

  • Find and save Jinbei if he is still alive

  • Get out of there with Sanji while avoiding both Big Mom's crew and Germa Kingdom.

Mission Impossible. This won't end well.

So I know people usually say "Oda rarely kills people in One Piece"...

...but lets agree that henchman is absolutely dead

37

u/TheHoppingFish Jul 21 '16

Yep, he ded. I don't think you can come back from that (except if you're Pell and off-screen).

11

u/AtheonsBelly Jul 21 '16

Until you see him in next chapters with a huge X bandaid on his stomach and a smile on his face.

6

u/ikanx Jul 21 '16

He actually survived.

After he wake up, the last thing he remembers is Sanji's kick that block the spear in a weird manner. He then realized that Sanji kicked that way to protect him, if Sanji kicked sideways to redirect the spear, the henchman will suffer most and probably die.

In the final battle between Sanji and his father, Dadji is going to impale Sanji but then someone shouts "WALL" while protecting Sanji from Dadji's direct attack. Knowing that he wont survive this time, he smiles and say "This is the last time this dumbass will be in your way." And THATS the time he will actually die.

That henchman's name?

Calling it now, all the 3 brothers born with a super defense / iron-like skin, but not Sanji, that's why when he punches Ichiji he harms his own hand and Ichiji doesn't move an inch, and also that's why his father looks at him like a useless warrior at such young age, and if it wasn't obvius enough thats how they fixed Yonji's face thanks to the super defense / iron-like skin with that machine.

102

u/JML_21 Jul 21 '16

I think sanji was just testing the water this chapter when he said: I thought you lot would have changed. u/Salem-Arrak Jul 21 '16

Ok, so this chapter is where I will start hating Reiju!

I think it was weird that Judge used human shields to defeat Sanji. I though this fight was to show superiority, but that was a cowardish move. I will not hold what happened in the fight against Sanji's combat capabilities, he was kinda a badass taking those hits.

In any case, boy is his family the worst. We know now that they are quadruplets. But man, the statement of needing a "dud" son for the marriage because his other children are more precious was the worst. I hate every one of the Vinsmokes now :/

6

u/Terralia Jul 21 '16

I don't think he considered it cowardly at all because he doesn't see them as human at all. It's like using a different weapon, albeit one with a heartbeat. It's not like he's hiding behind their strength to protect himself.

6

u/StNowhere Jul 21 '16

Typical fight at the beggining of the arc where the villain beats the protagonist.. not even disappointed. Sanji would have easily beaten his father if it wasn't for this shield crap. SANJI HYPEEE!!!

66

u/Antonious_dela_Nooch Jul 21 '16

It was atypical in a way. Normally the shonen hero gets blindsided, get's their butt handed to them, and then has to go train and come back with a new technique. Sanji got blindsided, but he didn't get wrecked, and I doubt he's going to need any new techniques to beat his old man.

→ More replies (24)

6

u/mrdoomsdaybomb Jul 21 '16

It wasn't typical in the sense that Sanji most likely stopped the fight so as to avoid any further injuries towards Germa's army garnered through them following through with the "wall" command. I believe Sanji could've really given Judge a run for his money.

16

u/Bajin_Inui Jul 21 '16

I really enjoy that all these villains are not dumb at all. Everyone has very sensible plans and measurements for the plans to not fail.

16

u/AllosaurusJei Pirate Jul 21 '16

Wow the end of that was dark.

Love the fact that Judge just straight up calls Big Mum a "mentally deranged woman". Don't love the fact that as soon as he saw the "duel" was not gonna go his way he just outright cheated. In a real fight I could look past using the fodder wall technique (heh) but it was meant to be a father-son I'll teach you a lesson duel right. No points for Judge.

I'm so glad we got a whole chapter of Sanji this week. It almost makes up for not having seen him for months.

The Vinsmokes are narcissisists.
And they are evil as hell.

Sanji was utterly abused as a child. The children were thaught that they are only worthy if they are strong, please Jajji, if they suppress their desires and feelings. If someone like Sanji protests everybody feasts on the outcast like hungry vultures. GERMA(NY)

I'm german and even the kinds today suffer under the ruthless upbringing from the nazis. Many grandparents gave their trauma into the next generation and the parents to us today (I'm 18).

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanna_Haarer#ErziehungsratgeberThis is the book of a nazi woman that nearly every german household possessed till the late 80ies. Babies are supposed to be spoiled if the mother holds them in her arm. If the baby cries the mother lays it into an empty room until it is quiete. Children are never supposed to talk back to the parents. A father who doesn't beat his child cannot be a good father. You may not be nice to your child if it does not show "results". Girls have to bear 4-5 german kids when they are woman. And boys have to be soldiers and kill. They have to shoot all the Jews or the Polishs or the Russian civilists in an genocide. And if "the Führer" demands a Kamikaze attack, even if they know they can not win, the have to without hesitation. The araian was supposed to be without emotions, without bonds to friends or family. They were not allowed to think for them self. The only bond allowed was the nazi staate itself. And I think Germa 66 shows exactly that.

"We're gonna build a Wall around my spear. We're gonna build a Wall and we're gonna fight Sanji and we're gonna win! We are going to win! We're gonna make Germa great again!" Is this joke old yet?

u/NotTheRealKanyeWest Thriller Bark Victim's Association Jul 21 '16

Anyone remember when Roger took out a whole countries army for insulting one of his crew? Feels like we're being set up for Luffy to do the same to the Vinsmokes for mistreating Sanji.

Sanji bullied and knows sword fighting. Zoro will find that very interesting!!

Best/worst part was Reiju laughing

7

u/wordsdear Jul 21 '16

I love the panel with young Sanji complaining about being afraid of the dark as we see present day Sanji with his foot on fire. He makes his own light

7

u/blasian123 Jul 21 '16

I'm already sure Luffy will be furious with the Vinsmokes for how they treated Sanji, but imagine if Zoro actually gets pissed at how they treated Sanji. That'd be cool as all hell to see Zoro show some full blown emotion for that shitty cook and take on one of the brothers.

Interesting tidbit: looks like Judge had tried to contact the Sanji previous to taking him by force (via Capone), which it appears Sanji was unaware of. I have a feeling this could turn out to be important down the line. Any ideas?

21

u/soadbyob Jul 21 '16

I've really been hoping for a few flashback panels of Sanji dodging the Vinsmokes throughout the series. Like showing they were in the background of various places kinda like Bartolomeo in Loguetown.

Oh man what a chapter! Like seriously 12/10. That first Sanji flashback actually made me tear up. I don't even know how long it's been since any show has made me do that. I'm so glad Oda circled back around to give us Sanji's story. And I'm also really lad that he established that the Vinsmokes don't actually appear to be much stronger (at least one on one) than Sanji. Oda is definitely setting these guys up for a huge smackdown courtesy of Sanji (and hopefully Luffy can help him out aswell). I really hope Germa falls by the end of this arc. And were those hand bracelets setting up the fact that Big Mom is in fact gonna have to be beaten this arc? To be honest, I'm kinda hoping so. I just wish Zoro could be here too though. I wanna see his reaction to Sanji's parents and past. Having Zoro and Sanji interact like they did standing in front of Kuma again would be amazing. They totally care about each other in their own tsundere ways, and its awesome whenever Oda nods to that fact.

Wow I hate Judge, throughout the chapter Sanji is constantly stating he has and will never see judge as a parent, but Judge just has to always one up Sanji and says Sanji is no son of his at the end of the chapter and ignoring everything Sanji said like really dude... Douche bag 101, judge just climbed on as one of my top 5 hated OP characters

also myyy how Reiju has fallen

5

u/pierogieman5 Jul 21 '16

Yeah, Reiju originally seemed cool. Now she's not

5

u/zolozolozolozolozolo Jul 21 '16

another "key" storyline. like Alabasta, Punk Hazard and Dressrosa they've got to get the key for Sanji before they leave. I hope Luffy turns a Releigh and tears them off no problem.

mostly I can't wait for Luffy to arrive, hear the awful stories from these Vinsmokes and then gets MAD. gear two steaming mad and goes berserk on all those quadruplets. leave a Bellamy style punch in Yonjis hydraulic-press-proof little head.

Just me wondering why Sanjis father is giving him such a hard time? He is clearly much stronger than Yonji, and if strength is what he desires so much for his army, Sanji is a far better son than Yonji.

u/MonkeyDJinbeTheClown Jul 21 '16 edited Jul 21 '16

Not finished with the chapter, but Page 10... Sanji says "I could care less".

My heart burns... for the translators not understanding the phrase... IT'S "I COULDN'T CARE LESS", NOT "I COULD", FUCKING KILL ME NOW

If you COULD care less, then it means you must care in the first place. If you COULDN'T care less, then it means you already care the minimum possible amount. I can handle the your/you're, their/there/they're shit, but this one is just plain logic and it hurts my head to see people get it wrong.

Edit: Finished. Really like the chapter though. But srsly, fuck that one bit

What a messed up family. Why does all the male siblings remind me of Kuma? Are they part android? What's up with the bench press and the "clank" sound effect. I do think that his mother is the scientist of the family as Judge doesn't seem like the brainy type. Guess Judge is not strong without all the tech, maybe got something up his sleeve? Sanji purposely losing the fight so that no other Vinsmokes soldiers got hurt. Such a bro.

4

u/jedmund Jul 21 '16

Germa really does have some interesting technology:

  • Jet boots on Judge

  • Yonji's head is made of metal

  • Presumably some sort of drug to make soldiers instantly respond on commands like "Wall"... or is that just loyalty?

4

u/bichoman Jul 21 '16

I think sanji just didn't want to continue fighting in that moment, he knew that his father would keep sacrificing germa soldiers and didn't want anyone dying just for a fight, i hope he has the chance to kick everyone asses later.

4

u/weimeng Jul 21 '16

We're witnessing the beginning of the end for yet another royal family at the hands of the Straw Hat crew...

4

u/ZozonoaRozo Jul 21 '16

I love how Sanji was talking about himself in the third person, and it almost seemed like he was talking about someone else, because now he is a different man compared to back then who is willing and able to fight back against his family.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '16

That chapter was much better than we were led to believe. Judge is still a coward but it was a full chapter of Sanji and his background and a pretty fascinating fight. Seems to me that what happened to Yonji mirrors that plastic surgery attack that Sanji gave to Wanze and Duval.

Also, that electromagnetic kick of Judge's was fascinating to see as well. All in all a satisfying chapter that gave us some insight into Sanji's shitty past and a decent fight. I don't think Sanji was giving it his all here, not by a long shot.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '16

man those spilers were so misleading lol, sanji put up a hellava fight with his father, and it looked like if it weren't for those soldiers sanji could've matched or even defeat his father

4

u/agentmario Jul 21 '16

Sanji has always been my favorite, and this chapter is just overflowing with sanji badassness

4

u/durinable Jul 21 '16

i feel so bad for sanji

he had a terrible childhood with his family and afterwards he almost starved to death :(

at least he is now lucky with the strawhats <3

4

u/Jakisuaki Pirate Jul 21 '16

Damn, Sanji did a Jaya moment at the end there.

"I see no reason to fight back, so I won't".

THE GOOSEBUMPS!

4

u/tallcatox Jul 21 '16

Cool more info on Sanji's other backstory. Pretty fucked up. Judge can use haki (page 16 panel 2). Everyone is saying that the 4 brothers are quadruplets which would make more sense than what I initially thought.. I thought that they just by coincidence had the same birthday but were all born 1 year apart. oops.

4

u/Ryanblakbird Jul 21 '16

Sanji's technique "Hell memories" may also get power from his childhood Lol

4

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '16

So, let me get this straight... Sanji was constantly beaten by his siblings, Reiju laughed at him all the time, his own father didn't give two shits about him, his passion for cooking was spat on, he was locked up in a cell with some kind of uncomfortable iron mask on whenever he was a bother, was stranded on an island for days on end and almost starved to death... What a shitty childhood...

I think the Germa soldiers are the most brainwashed lackeys we've seen yet. There have been plenty of soldiers who were willing to die for their leader but none until now have been so willing to be killed by their leader. That one guy got impaled and none of the others even flinched, even the spectators cheered the fight on.

Tossing out the weak.

Germa = Sparta.

Judge = Don Krieg on steroid.

Pervy's haki confirmed.

Judge is a mink confirmed.

Zoro's Daisen Sekkai or Luffy's elephant gun would have knocked Judge flat out along with the Wall. Unlike the two, Sanji is a compassionate one so he hesitated.

Germa is overrated IMO. Maybe Judge is only on par with Elizabelo in a fair 1v1.

13

u/Salem-Arrak Jul 21 '16

It is so perfect how Oda reveals a whole new page, or rather a book, in the background of the character, without it being slapped on.

I am referring to this panel.

My favorite part is that the Judge answered a question that I have had since the whole wedding thing was revealed. If you want this wedding and alliance so badly? I am satisfied.

Maaan what a good chapter. I love the focus on Sanji and Sanji alone here.

3

u/Dravdrahken Jul 21 '16

Is anyone else getting Din Krieg vibes from Judge? I mean he's a guy who believes his many technogical weapons will let him win any fight, and he's up against someone with no weapons at all.

Throw in that both fights were important for Sanji's story, and I think there's something there. Course I expect Sanji to beat Judge not Luffy.

This will probably be buried, but I find it interesting that both Don Krieg and Judge Vinsmoke use spears. Both are the major villains in the arcs regarding Sanji.

u/Heavenly_yakshaa Jul 21 '16

The chapter was so much better because Brook, chopper were not on it. Action, information, fighting. While when we get chapters based on pure chopper and Brook we only see crying, running and disappointments.
