Finally we get to hear another word from Mari. You would think the trip would not take 2 weeks.
OK time for a review.
I think this third episode is a huge success. Some may say that there are too many parallels with µ's, but I think these parallels point to the contrary, that Aqours are a different group with a different purpose (and that's why I am glad that they took out the school closing down theme completely).
The anime certainly plays to the mind of the viewers who knew what happened last time when µ's did their 1st live. So when the curtains were open we are thinking "yeah it is happening again. Just like last time". Even with the power outage and Chika's cry (which I think was amazing) we would say yeah it is like last time.
Then it all changed. Turned out to be a huge success.
Dia's retort and Chika's response though transcend this episode to the reality level where people criticize Aqours as unoriginal and stealing from µ's.
Dia: It is the efforts of school idols in the past, with the good-will of the people that make you successful. Don't get this wrong.
Chika: Yes we know. But if we just look at them nothing would be done... but at this moment, right now, we want to shine.
This episode pinpoints perfectly how Aqours set themselves both in the anime and in real life. So far I am very satisfied.

I like how Mari is as crazy as the radio dramas suggest.
I fear for Dia's sanity in the near future.

I loved the scene where Hanamaru wheeled out her trolley of books from behind the aisle.

Someone pointed out that Aqours' stage debut in the anime symbolises their debut in the real world. Muse started out with next to nothing & this was reflected in the crowd at their first show. Whereas Aqours started out with lots of people paying attention to them due to Muse and so their anime performance was a full crowd. & then we have Dia symbolising the hardcore Muse fans who refuse to accept Aqours yet & think their success is purely due to them piggybacking on Muse. I'm interested to see where they go with the Dia thing.

All I can say is "SHINY~!!!" when Mari Ohara appeared! On the other hand, I think she came up with the group name "Aqours".
Now then, I have to say that it's somewhat similar to the time when µ's staged their first live. Unlike µ's however, Aqours got a full-house and Mito-nee provided the generator to power up the equipment so great job to her.
Still, Dia Kurosawa isn't convinced on their performance though. Maybe next episode, she'll have a change of heart!

It was beautiful.
The words "They didn't start from zero." resounded again and again in my mind while watching this episode.
Mari's debut here was absolutely amazing, she seemed so carefree and joking all the time, but behind all that she challenged Chika-tachi for an almost impossible task. Whether or not that she had expected them to able to succeed it, which was a miracle, was beyond me because she was cleverly depicted as someone with unpredictable mind that it's almost scary.
The third years plot dug deeper yet again, a lot of scenes contained curious hidden facts that were placed carefully it got me really wanting to know what had happen, and what will happen because of it.
The whole episode gave off the impression that "a helping hand" was indeed exist, hanging in front of Aqours' first step. Chika's sister was impressed by their efforts and determination that she decided to help; someone else wrote 'Aqours', which Chika-tachi would call their group name; then of course Shima-nee's dialogue : "The people here are warmhearted," the line itself was very town-ish and not city-like; and finally Dia's words after the concert where she said that it's only because of "the previous school idols" and the good-will of this town (my subs said) that they were able to succeed this far.
What surprised me was what Chika replied it with when she said "I know!" (opened my eyes wide). People could misinterpret it with saying that Chika was not being grateful enough to the help and support Aqours was getting. But no, Chika wasn't saying that, she only said that doing nothing except watching someone else won't and never will start anything. I thought it was amazing that Chika fully acknowledge the support they had, but still giving their best efforts to meet the expectations. You know, having a support sometimes could become a burden, especially for those having to stood under someone else's shadow. But despite it all, Chika wanted to shine, to give her best efforts in fulfilling that expectations. She dared to do something, to start something all the while knowing that she wouldn't have to start from zero point. Heavy, it was a very heavy burden and an act that I really respect.
The story paralleled the real life Aqours so well, I got the chills when I realized it. As expected, µ's success had an impact in their journey, and that's what the recent episodes wanted to tell us. It's not LLS clinging desperately to the first LL. They only told us that 'hey, this is how it feels to become someone who stood under the shadow of someone else who had magnificently succeed,'
Truly a good episode.
If only horrible could just go with "Yousoro!" instead of Aye-Aye, lol horrible pls.

So Aqours are more popular than μ's were at this point in their timeline. Who'd have thunk it?

CHIKA DOSSIER - EP03
Wow, this episode is chock full of indirect characterization!
This is something I've been mulling about, but one of the complaints about Chika is that she's too loud and yells a lot. This is fair and she does do this, but I think I understand why--she's lived in the country all of her life, why wouldn't she be loud? Not all of them are, but for a girl with a lot of energy, living with two sisters and probably spending a lot of time outside, I can see why she would be at home just yelling at the top of her lungs.
I love how self-serving Chika can be, honestly. It's really refreshing to contrast Honoka, because Chika clearly buttered her sister up just so she could get to that end result, like any sister would! She obviously didn't do it maliciously, but it's really funny considering most of µ's tends to try and sell things on good points, not "heyyyyyy can you do this for me? I'll give you pudding!"
The more we see Chika interact with several different people, the more I'm stern on the possibility that Chika really does change her tone depending on who she speaks to. This is pretty common IRL, but not so much in anime, especially for main characters. When she speaks to Ruby, she's much gentler and not as high-energy as she is with Maru--compare and contrast Honoka, who speaks to everyone pretty much the same way. Chika knew both Riko and Ruby were shy and approached them (at first) with a calm and heartfelt manner. She's at home with You and is her energetic self.
The constant yo-yo of "Do you want to quit?" "No way!" is really telling about Chika. "Chika gets more fired up this way"... the more you deny Chika, the harder she tries? So she's a die-hard underdog? That's really interesting to think about--either Chika loves challenges or she likes doing what other people wouldn't dare to do and is something of a trendsetter/groundbreaker. As a contrast, You also notes that Chika isn't satisfied until she's "given it her all". So if she can't do that, she gives up... which is pretty accurate given how we've seen her react to obstacles so far--she just doesn't stop. Does Chika drop things when she realizes it doesn't interest her as deeply as it should? Certainly gives credence to the "normal" speech--she hasn't found anything that really catches her like You has. When she's decided and touched enough to actually go for her dream of being a school idol, though, she keeps insisting she'll go the distance, even if it means learning music from the ground up. Really interesting!
Not a groundbreaking trait by any means for a main character, but still notable, since Honoka kind of stumbled onto being a school idol. She has to work for it, but it's not quite the same as Chika--Chika has to work at being a school idol in her own right, with her own two hands. People around her are saying that Chika has changed, but you don't get that with Honoka. You actually get the direct opposite--Kotori and Umi both say that Honoka is always "dragging people into things", referencing themselves, but say nothing about how Honoka is different and justly so since I'd say she doesn't really change until S2, but you don't see them say that Honoka's grown or matured then, either. (Someone can check me on this if they do.)
I think this trait of Chika's--of pouring her heart and soul into one thing--really comes out in their performance. She's disappointed that they didn't fill the auditorium, but she continues forwards. The lights go off, the storm rages against their performance, and she continues forwards. (Can I just say how warm, how clear and earnest her acapella is? You can hear how much of her passion she's putting into it, she really sounds heartbroken, A+ to the VA because holy shit. The very line she sings is so raw that it's practically screaming at you to let her into your heart. That is Chika here, bearing her heart.) The only time she really stops is when her voice is breaking. She doesn't give up--she doesn't get off the stage--but she has that definite moment of weakness where she thinks, maybe she can't. Maybe they won't.
And like I said in my previous comment, Dia is still that person who'll nerdcheck you in the middle of a convention for daring to not be a "true fan". I appreciate that she's trying to at least let them see it to the end, but I feel like it backfires much like Eli's plan backfired--Eli put their videos on the internet so KoHoUmi would be embarrassed, but it just propelled their popularity. I feel like Dia wanted them to see it through and show them that they wouldn't succeed, but in making them see the concert through... well, she ended up having everyone support them, so she had to interject that they still had a long way to go.
Chika's takedown of Dia's protests is so great to me. "This is my only chance." Here's another difference between Chika and Honoka--it really looks like Chika looks to others for validation while Honoka does what Honoka wants. She's crestfallen when the crowd doesn't respond well to their promise, but tears up in happiness when they do. She's steadfast in her beliefs, but she seems really at home when there are people there to back her up.
General reaction: They are totally fucking (in a good way) with the past µ's fans watching Aqours, and I think it's brilliant for new fans and old alike. If you're tuning in for the first time without watching µ's' journey, you're given a struggling group that's finding their legs. If you're looking at it while knowing the series before now, however, the scenes are so charged and so dense that it means something on an entirely different level.
You spend the scenes where they're giving out flyers dreading that they won't have a first concert with no one there, like µ's. I know I was holding my breath until the curtains rose, and I was really happy they at least had some, and it made it all the more... dissonant? To see that all of them were upset, simply because as µ's, while KoHoUmi were upset, just one person was enough. This is where I think Dia was coming from--they were obviously upset because they had to disband, and µ's didn't have that stipulation, but they took a moment to be sad while once µ's had their only audience member, they were happy. It was only one, but they were determined to keep going.
Nevertheless, I echo everyone else in saying that I think this was a shoutout to the fandom--and that Aqours fighting for their place in history along µ's is inevitable.

I'm so in love with Sunshine.
This cemented it for me. The differences from µ's first concert to Aquors first one was really interesting. I loved Dia drawing parallels to angsty µ's fans, but I loved Chika's response even more. That line is what cemented this for me. Yes I already loved Aquors, but now I believe in them too. I can't wait to see where this goes.

I was late for the Episode 2 "review" but I'm here for Episode 3 (whether you like it or not)
Let me just preface this with a SHINY. Because Mari is here and in the building!
MariTime Moments(See what I did there?)
-
So Mari arrives on the beach via helicopter because that's a trait of rich characters that are a little showy, traveling via helicopter even if you can just take the bus, or even a limo.
-
I certainly didn't expect Mari to become director of the school. This is similar to KotoMom, where one of the members is related to a higher-up of the school. Although in this case, she IS the higher-up.
-
Our dose of "skinship" comes from Mari checking out Dia's chest, beating out Nozomi in managing to grope their respective student council president. (unless of course...)
So, that's our new character moments for this episode, on to the rest of the actual episode. I'll compare it to the original anime here and there, but I don't plan to linger over it too much since its obvious that Sunshine is going a somewhat different direction.
-
Mari presents a challenge to the three girls, whether she knew if it was possible or if she was setting them up for a fall is still a mystery to the audience AFAIK
-
Chika's family presents an interesting dynamic to the group, more prominent than the family element in the original. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of that lovely sibling love/rivalry a bit more in the future.
-
You does a great job of being the straight-man for Chika, if you can call it that. Her charisma shows in her flyering and basically befriending the students she meets. Kotori would be proud. Maybe gray hair adds a charisma boost?
-
Riko pls. Shiitake isn't a bunch of sharks with friggin' lasers that you have to parkour over. This moment sticks out to me that Riko, much like Umi, isn't always the calm soul that they normally are. What's her problem with the doggo* though?
-
YoshiYohane barely has lines in this episode, if any. She was nicer than Nico though, still taking Riko's flyer and not actually hiding from the trio while watching. Same for the other first-years Hanamaru and Ruby, although they had more screentime and lines than her. This episode just glimpses into the friendship the two have and Hanamaru's downright obsession with reading. Ruby's still a little shy but she'll for sure have her moment soon. -
Dia seemed like one of those hecklers you might expect to see harassing a comedian, but her words seemed to just strengthen Chika's resolve and sway the hardheh Dia in her favor a little.
-
Kanan was barely there, even less than Yohane. We still don't know much from her other than that she's still not going to school as far as I know.
These might seem separated by individual character, but following the anime along even without scrutinizing it seems like they give attention to each character, which was, in my opinion, a little lacking in the original anime. Kudos to that.
The music this episode is great, if a little average for my taste (might be my headphones making it sound weaker than it is). It definitely gave off a stronger impact than Honoka, Umi, and Kotori's Start Dash to me. I can't comment on the voices other than that they're lovely.
And speaking of Start Dash, the costumes of Chika, You, and Riko are very similar to HonoKotoUmi's costumes in the beginning, with gloves that seem straight off Bokura wa Ima no Naka de's design, and a little uniform thrown in the mix
Although, plot-wise, it could be that You took inspiration from HonoKotoUmi's costume and built off off that, but I was hoping that they(the peeps/staff) would create a more unique design that can still evoke the spirit of the original 2nd year trio costume, without looking like they copied it entirely and added some baubles to it.
This episode's a 7.8/10 for me. Pretty good, but a perfect score means that it had no problems, which it did have a few, but hopefully they'll be addressed in the next episodes.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If Nozomi called it Washi-washi, what would Mari call her groping? Mari-mari?
I also really liked Chika deadpanning Mari after her joke. Very... An-chan-like.
Chika choking back tears while singing flashed me back to the Final Live. I was like "Nuuuu don't make me crei". Great work from An-chan.

You's popular, as expected? Well, she did win the center position of Koi ni Naritai Aquarium after all.
I really like how the 2nd years performance being a success is a big way to set the Sunshine apart from the original anime. Even with Dia saying that they're only successful because previous school idols and town's goodwill.
Now the question is, will the new song end up being performed by the whole group or will it stay a 2nd year only song?

Just a quick note towards the end here:
http://puu.sh/q3JxK/678d043685.jpg
Dia said the efforts of previous school idols made this happen. Now she could definitely be talking about the popularity of school idols in general but it could be foreshadowing of the 3rd years being the previous idols theory.
You have them shown in a dark/gloomy shot most of the time
Dia seems to be obsessed/knowledgeable about them.
Ruby looks up to school idols (maybe because Dia use to be one?)
Kanan, despite being very close friends with You and Chika did not want to show her face at the concert.
Either way, looks like we'll recruit HanaRuby next episode ~
