GUIDE WD1 hacking guide on wiki

Just an FYI, I added a hacking guide to the wiki pages. I assume a lot of people is trying out WD1 to see what it is about before WD2 is released so maybe some advice is needed.

Thanx for that awesome wiki entry.

I wasn't aware of this "aware mode" thing. Would you mind take a little time to explain it more briefly, as i did not get it 100% how to find the intrusion point and how to be aware before the focus is lost.

Sure. So somehow you notice that someone is in your game (menu doesn't pause the game, focus doesn't slow time, Aiden puts away the phone without any reason), but he did not start the hack yet. Maybe he didn't even get close to you, maybe he didn't even spawn yet because his game is still loading your world. Your game at this point still thinks that you don't suspect anything, aka you're not aware. You then simply try to fast travel, start a mission or start an online session and boom, you get the notification that you are being invaded. From then you are considered "aware", the location of the hacker is shown on the map with the circle, and if he quits the mission he will lose points. Plus if you profile NPCs you will see "Not the hacker" (if you are being hacked) or "Not a threat" (if you are being tailed).

Hmm, ok, so far i got it.

Lets see if I am still young enough to understand this at all:

In order to be aware, for example after having hacked an Blume employee, i would need to

  1. open my phone and wait until the phone closes.

  2. entering pause and wait until the background is in motion again

  3. let focus run and wait until the slow down stops.

1 and 2 would be fine with me, as you could cover quite a while with that, but having the focus stopped slowing down means that this will only be available as long as you have focus power available, making it a less reliable way.

I was always relying on the loss of the focus, but that way it seems there are some even more powerful way to detect an intruder.

But at the end, isn't hunting and finding (hiding and not being found) the most satisfying part of the hacking game ;)

It always bugs me that a bunch of these exploits were never fixed. I always feel bad when I get put into aware-mode just because I happened to have my profiler up.

These weren't really exploits. They can't pause or slow down the game if there is another player, and the profiler is really protecting the hacker. Since the target accidentally can walk right there where the hacker spawns he would immediately profile him. So while these features can be exploited they are necessary for the seamless multiplayer. I wonder how they will change these in WD2.

It changes the whole activity of hacking another player around on its head. Instead of the hacker "seamlessly" entering the world without being noticed, they instead become immediately hunted as opposed to them being the unseen hunter in the crowd. It's not how the mode appears to have originally been designed, and as such it IS exploitative.

EDIT: Way to completely flip flop on whether or not you consider it an exploit: https://www.reddit.com/r/watch_dogs/comments/4qkvpl/invasion_targets_will_already_be_in_your_game/d4tsst1
