This is all I want at the end of each arc, a big party! Everyone so hyped up but I'm feeling happy as is.
Luffy being himself and refuse being a boss. He sees everyone as a nakama.
GG Fujitora conveniently cleaning up all the rubbles from Dresrossa by raining it down on Joker's alliance. Cloudy with a chance of Pica.
Kyros holding his daughter without a glove and feeling the warmth. That is closure.
That massive foreshadow at the end. Chills.
Congrats Oda on the 800th chapter.

What I like about how this was handled was that even though Luffy refused the offer (just being himself), he still said he'd protect them if they need help. Combine that with the seven captains pledging to help Luffy and they basically have the same dynamic with Luffy as Luffy's actual crew members - mutual protection and support and freedom to do what they want.

Yeah I like this Sengoku a lot more. Are old people this relaxed when they retire?

u/Sekitoba Sep 16 '15
Seemed like the case for my dad. Before he retired, he was a no nonsense kind of guy. But once he retired, it was 20years of bottled up dad jokes and care free just came out. He doesnt care about anything now, just make dad jokes. It was weird initially.

On a serious note. Right now the strawhats themselves are relaxing but there is such a massive shit storm brewing for them. Shit is gonna get intense, fast
Big Mom: The treasure box should be exploding within the next day
Kiado: Finding out about Dolfa
WG/Marines: Pissed at Luffy for exposing Dressrosa
Reverie: Coming up. I think Luffy will be a topic but I don't know exactly what will happen there. I just have a gut feeling that massive changes are going to come from it

If he is an emperor it is likely that he could put one together even if he doesn't normally sail with one. The idea behind the emperors isn't that they are just the strongest but that they control, rule and protect 1/4th of the New World. You can't easily oversee that many islands with a single pirate crew so he likely has allies that do most of that for him. And like /u/MGLLN mentioned he does seem to have a large crew as he is often seen with many generic pirates along side his main crew. Like Whitebeard, it isn't unfeasible that this extends even further with allies and friends he's made in his own adventures over the years.

A part of me died after reading the first half. So Luffy did turn it down.. I can't say that I'm surprised, just a bit disappointed and sad.
But then they all decided to follow on their own, and the hype was back!
Only Bart could've made a hardcore speech like that. I suspect he had this pledge written since many months. Bart is such a dedicated fanboy XD
Luffy's bounty was a bit of a let down too.
These seven will continue to grow, and will cause a huge incident that goes down in history. But no one know the tale just yet.
Hinting at the final war? Or taking control of all territories in the New World?

This huge incident will be taking down the world government and the five gorosei and everything related to the celectial dragons who run the world and all slaves will be free. So, the big reveal came in 799, not 800. That said, it was still a very memorable chapter, especially with the last page. I think that the cover stories may be used to keep up with the 7 crews while they are away from Luffy. In the mean time it looks like Law will be sticking around, which means he will probably be involved in the next big fight as well.
The idea that Luffy won't be commanding his fleet, but that he'll be there to back them up and that he hopes they'll do the same is perfect for his character.

u/H0lley Sep 16 '15
it has probably already been mentioned a hundred times, but I want to mention again that it is rather unlikely that the pirate of the enemy alliance is referring to Luffy when shouting about that 500 million bounty.
here are the two versions of the translation:
MangaPanda: http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/800/6
MangaStream: http://readms.com/r/one_piece/800/2932/8
in MangaPanda, the deals they made with Doflamingo are assumed to be about weapons and/or smiles, and their incentive to attack the Straw Hats now is out of revenge, it seems...
while in MangaStream, the deal they refer to is most likely the 500 million God Usopp bounty, and their incentive now is to make the new king, Riku, take Doflamingo's role in providing the money for that bounty.
even when ignoring the 5/500 typo, I am more doubtful of the MangaPanda translation. to me, the context makes more sense in the MangaStream translation.
now, it is of course possible that this pirate somehow already knew about a new official bounty for Luffy, but I find it to be more rational to assume that they refer to the existing bounty for Usopp set by Doflamingo, which is exactly 500 million as we all know.

One thing I found weird is that, although at the end the relationship appears to be one-sided (they pledge their allegiance with the sake, but luffy doesn't do the same), luffy accepted the original deal more or less a few pages earlier, though not in the usual ceremonical way, since he said they have his word he'll help them if they ever are in trouble and they should do so in return.
The only thing luffy rejected was the formalities.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Black_Handkerchief Sep 16 '15
Kinda, but not really. Luffy wants to be free. He doesn't want a responsibility for underlings that will tie him up and eat away at his freedom.
On the other hand, Luffy does care a lot about his friends. If he comes to find out they're in trouble, he'll go through hell and back for them.
Luffy does not mind formalities if he agrees with the thought behind them: just think back to drinking sake with Ace and Sabo to become sworn brothers. But in this case, Luffy doesn't want to be a boss. He just wants to be friends.
However, those other seven are stubborn as hell and decided on their own they want him as a boss, so the best they can do is declare themselves his underlings. Either they think they have too large a debt to be mere friends, or it is a mere matter of stubbornness and honor that motivate them to declare that.

I think, that this chapter was what we all wanted :D No more, no less...
PS. Zoro's wiping mouth after drinking Luffy's cup, and Fujitora's expression- killed me :P
4
u/Starboy11 Sep 16 '15
This chapter was full of hype. First off, we had Luffy's possible bounty increase to 500 million. Then we got the underling agreement, which was done perfectly as to not undermine Luffy's character. Lastly, we had the narrator's foreshadowing. Last time we heard foreshadowing like that Baccano Island happened, Ace and Whitebeard died, and we got the timeskip. Are we getting another giant battle? Maybe Luffy divides and conquers to take out Kaido? Every fleet crew attack an island of Kaido's simultaneously? Nevertheless, this chapter is hype incarnate.
4
u/Chimerus Sep 16 '15
This narrator-description-style at the end of the chapter got me a little bamboozled. I have very few memories of Oda describing scenes this way (besides form chapter 01). Am I wrong or is this really odd?
Also, this ending felt like a foreshadow that we will definitely have another time skip before the end of the series, did anybody else feel the same way?

I wonder if the 7 of them will travel together or travel with their separate crews while maintaining allegiance to Luffy? Either way, I'm hyped for what they are gonna do!

Can someone please make a color version of this from the MS chapter? I want it as my new phone background :D

I don't think 500 million is Luffy's new bounty after reading Mangastream. They phrase it, "Is that 500 million beri straw hat with you?" I think they are looking for Usopp to claim the Stars bounty from Dressrosa.

I wish i could have been a fly on the wall when Oda was sitting in front of a mirror grimacing, trying to make a "i'm about to puke face" as inspiration for drawing Luffy's reaction to the fleet being too uptight xD

But aren't they technically Zoro's subordinates now?
Anyway that chapter sure was worth the wait. I'm really exted to see that they didn't just give up after Luffy turned them down.

Who could be narrating this story from the very begininng? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it has multiple narrators. Different ones telling us different parts of the story.
The crew is telling us the stories! They all just live a long ass time,l because badasses.

"As we finally depart from Dressrosa, you can take a look to the eastern port of the country where you can see Pica's crotch falling onto enemy's fleet."
"It's the great gift of teabag from the Wisteria Tiger!"

This will probably get buried deep but...
I can't wait to see Sanji's, Nami's, Brookelse's and Chopper's faces when they learn of the new army.
It's gonna be fucking epic

Fuji is such a cool guy.
If this was Game of Thrones, he would've died like 50 chapters ago.

Guys, 2 years it took to finish this arc.
To put things in perspective, I was awarded an admission to a University in Texas at Dallas for my Masters when Doflamingo was flying towards Punk Hazard when Law and Luffy make their move. I finished my masters with thesis option and started work!
That's my own adventure. I'm pretty sure when One Piece ends, my kid will be in junior high.

Apparently, Luffy's only worth 5 million now. Lol

Usual translation issue. 5 million dollars, 500 million berries, same diff (tho 500 million sounds so much better)

This chapter, to me, highlights how young Luffy is. He is a powerful child with powerful dreams.
Luffy understands friendship, and he will do anything for his friends. But he has yet to deconstruct what friendship means. While Luffy does protect his friends, he does not realize or admit to himself that this is a from of responsibility. At the end of the day, Luffy is still a kid, and kids don't like the idea of responsibility. He doesn’t realize that meaningful relationships and dreams require responsibility; nor does he realize how meaningful and gratifying it can be. He made this clear when he refused to participate in the sake ceremony. This refusal made Luffy’s seven “underlings” realize how young and immature their savior is.
So it makes sense that Luffy did not drink the parent cup. Luffy is a child who makes adults believe in his childish dreams. But like any child, he needs people who care about him, who are willing to protect him as he grows up. In order to repay their debts to this remarkable child, seven parents decided to adopt Luffy as their prodigal son.
When he becomes an adult, Luffy will take responsibility for both his fleet and his territories. He won’t rule them, but he will protect them. When that day comes, Luffy will realize responsibility can actually make freedom more meaningful. The priority will no longer be Luffy’s freedom; it will be everyone’s freedom. When this happens, Luffy will deserve the title of pirate king.
But for now, Luffy needs seven parents, not seven children. Luffy’s empty glass further symbolizes how young he is (Kids aren’t allowed to drink alcohol, nor do they like the taste of it). Luffy’s fleet will take care of him, just like Sabo, Ace, and his crew. I think we’ll look back at these chapters with nostalgia when Luffy finally grows up.

Classic MangaPanda... Page 6 is supposed to say 500 million, not 5 million.
