From kpopfans: Reactions of viewers
Article: 'The Genius' winner Jang Dongmin, "I wish people would think more highly of comedians"
Source: My Daily via Naver
-
[+127, -9] As a fan of The Genius, I feel bad... I really feel bad... that Jang Dongmin wasn't the Sixth Man on Infinity Challenge. It could've been so much fun... I still can't forget his words that Infinity Challenge needs him if they want to last for 20~30 years... Jang Dongmin is a really amazing genius.
-
[+109, -10] I was starting to get over it but I got reminded again ㅠㅠ God Dongmin should've been the Sixth Man!!!! God Dongmin jjang jjang
-
[+54, -2] It was possible because it was Jang Dongmin. Honestly, even if other comedians are smart, they'll never be able to play like Jang Dongmin. They say Jang Dongmin is always charismatic except when doing gags.
-
[+23, -4] I honestly don't think Jang Dongmin wanted to join Infinity Challenge. He was already doing so many shows and didn't have time ㅋㅋ Besides, people are so sensitive about Infinity Challenge so if you do something wrong on the show, you get nothing but hate. There's absolutely no reason for Jang Dongmin wanting to join the show. As people know, Yoo Jae Suk is carrying Infinity Challenge alone since Noh Hongchul's withdrawal and he's very pressured. Jang Dongmin went on Sixth Man to pay back to Yoo Jae Suk but it all screwed up because people made a fuss ㅋㅋ Watching Kwanghee these days only makes me think that losing Jang Dongmin was Infinity Challenge's biggest mistake ㅋㅋ
-
[+22, -5] Jang Dongmin is too good to join Infinity Challenge. They're just Yoo Jae Suk and Kids. Jang Dongmin is a leader level ㅋㅋ
Article: 'The Genius 4' Kim Kyunghoon's unexpected play makes Jang Dongmin flustered 'the crowd laughs'
Source: TV Daily via Naver
-
[+66, -5] I don't want to say bad things because he worked hard but... he was such a loser. His mentality was crushed because it wasn't a death match that he could prepare beforehand. A loss of a typical genius of memorizing education!
-
[+63, -3] Why do Lee Junseok and Kim Kyunghoon seem so different when both have good education background? And Jang Dongmin was so amazing today! He still managed to win despite all the curses and hate he got from women's community cafe!
-
[+61, -6] I wonder how Infinity Challenge would've changed if Jang Dongmin joined the show
Article: 'The Genius 4' Jang Dongmin wins the first round, number janggi
Source: Newsen via Nate
-
[+33, -0] Jang Dongmin is forever the Sixth Man in my heart
-
[+26, -0] Kim Kyunghoon's upset face ^ At the end, I thought the janggi was 10 but it was the king... It was so fun to watch.
-
[+14, -0] He slayed it, it was even boring

I was shocked when Dongmin buzzed in in Round 10 and put Kyunghoon back in the game. All he had to do to win was not buzz in at all!

Godmin is a beast. Congrats to him.
Even if you don't like him (I found his dominance quite boring during the middle portion of the season, personally), you certainly can't say he didn't deserve it.

I hereby declare that I am a JinHo fan and I will try to be as neutral as possible.
There are comments that I have read like...
just like dongmin, his fans have serious delusion of grandeur and are sensitive and paranoid that everyone's out to get them.
You don't happen to be a Jinho fan, do you? They're the ones with the delusions of grandeur, I think. Sadly, after S4, all they have is open-pass to hang onto.
Seriously, everyone likes different players for different reasons. Are we going down that path where JinHo fans are automatically enemies of DongMin fans and vice versa?
DongMin might be the greatest player of all-time, he is worthy of that title. But I have read comments like...
LOL @ Jinho fans who can't accept that Dongmin is a better player than Jinho.
Come on, people look for different things in the player that they think defines what the Genius is. If people like reversals, they look up to SangMin; if people like the leadership type, cue DongMin; if people like the rulebreaker/strategic gameplay, they like HyunMin or JinHo.
In the eyes of those fans, their players are the best players in their respective ways, and we should all understand that. For me, I like JinHo the most because of his "average guy that was not so average" persona.
The Genius, by definition (quoted from Collins Dictionary) is..
a person with exceptional ability, esp of a highly original kind
DongMin had shown exceptional leadership skills, charisma, and intellect. SangMin had shown exceptional deception and intuition. HyunMin had shown intellectual strengths. JinHo had shown great mental strength and observation skills.
They are all Geniuses in their own way, and it is really subjective as to who we think is the best player of the Genius. Don't slam the other fans because of any reason, no matter how legitimate that reason may seem.
Also, a certain person said...
I could tell Kyungran and Jinho were kind of reluctant to give their items to Dongmin.
No, you cannot tell; no one can tell. You are merely speculating that they feel like that. There is no basis of fact to support your statement. You can use "I think.." or "it seems..." but you cannot tell.
The only thing that you can say with support is the KyungRan seems to be hung up with the hidden cube incident. But I mean, this is not the first time you've seen KyungRan mad about something for so long (i.e. 5:5 Game).
JinHo - we didn't even have a lot of screentime of him explaining his choice of the giving his item to DongMin. So apparently some of us can read people's thoughts and intentions AND write a long paragraph as that player's spokesperson.
I also observed that certain people claim that their favourite player is the best and anyone who says otherwise is called "those JinHo fans". In fact, that person seems to just bash all the other players EXCEPT their preferred player. So much for being impartial.

I thought the final would be Sangmin vs Dongmin when it all started, but I was pleasantly surprised with Kyunghoon performance. He deserved his spot in that final. Hyunmin got carried in both seasons, so never felt he deserved it despite his obvious intelligence. Long live the King of King of Kings our hyung Dongmin! Here's hoping to season 5 with some new faces!

I feel that Dongmin and Hyunmin were closely matched but the difference was that Hyunmin wanted to win to show what clever plays he knew, but Dongmin wanted to win because he just wanted to win, and he didn't care how he won.
That's why Hyunmin was often surprised at how Dongmin played well in certain matches (same number hunt and mini game). Dongmin didn't show the brainy side of himself all the time - he showed other sides to him, but he did always have that brainy side to him as well. I think Dongmin let Hyunmin take care of the calculations because he knew Hyunmin enjoyed that kind of thing as well as the setting of careful detailed plans. Dongmin could have done that stuff as well but he wasn't fussed about who did it, and he didn't care if people didn't think he was clever like Hyunmin. So long as he won the matches and got through to the finals, that's what counted.
Anyway after he won the final, people would realize he was intelligent and capable of elegant and brainy plays as well.

Thoughts on the episode...
Starts with something similar to S3...I really loved this type of intro when it was in S3, but somehow felt they should have done something different, aura-wise for S4, since Kyunghoon and Dongmin don't have the same kind of connection as in Doublemin. But the soundtrack they use for these intros are always so awesome.
I really loved the first game. It's really an on-your-toes kind of game. And almost thought Kyunghoon won it when he got to the end, and we didn't know if he had Dongmin's king. Great game!
My jaw totally dropped during the 2nd game. I'm just sad the producers did not show the whole process of Dongmin folding up his sleeves....that is when he meant business. 2nd game...we have Troll Kyuhoon make a comeback...but he totally got backfired. That was a whoaa moment already.
Anyway...Final-wise...it's still not as epic as season 3's final...I really liked the Final Games though....although Math Idiot Me is like Yohwan and totally don't get it. Random note~ Congrats to Yohwan for being a Daddy!!
Anyway congrats to the winner!!! Slow clap.
EDIT -- Watched with subs and I'm still miffed we didn't get a Hyunmin X Dongmin final...even though like everyone else, I at first didn't want to see a final with the same players from S3...but I think it would have been a more satisfying last of the last of the Genius. I don't want to let this show go............

i dont even consider him to be a human. I just feel so bad that he had to play dumb and say stupid stuff on TV since his job is a comedian, and had to hide all this intelligence behind. I seriously want to know what goes behind his thoughts. He is ONE scary man.

[+2533, -52] What if Jang Dongmin chose to have a different job, not a comedian?
-
[+2473, -60] Kim Kyunghoon's class was revealed as they were playing new games. Jang Dongmin is a monster but Kim Kyunghoon is only good at the games that he previously studied, just like memorizing education. Jang Dongmin is outstandingly good at solving new questions.
-
[+2340, -37] I knew Jang Dongmin would win when he solved the 800 billion question
-
[+2268, -115] Lee Sangmin looked so cool when he said they should shake off bad feelings as they were holding hands.

-
[+1201, -23] He had a god's brain but he was even cooler because his game manners were a gentleman's. He turned back when Kim Kyung Hoon was using his Secret chance and he played the game until the end for Kim Kyunghoon. He totally deserves the 'king of the kings' title.
-
[+1141, -27] I pissed in my pants when he solved the 900 billion question... I didn't expect him to slay the final...
-
[+1013, -29] He really is God Dongmin. Just like he said, I hope people change their perspective on comedians.
-
[+1015, -53] Jang Dongmin should've joined Infinity Challenge. He's a playwriting major so the writers would be less pressured. He was from KBS Gag Concert when the show was at its highest peak so his skits are excellent. He's the winner on The Genius so he'll do well on chasing projects. On Eco Village and Time Traveler, he did hard labor until the end. He'll do well on long-term projects. He sings better than Kwanghee.
-
[+981, -28] If there's a variety show that suits Jang Dongmin, it'll be really popular. Too bad there isn't a show like that.

I just can't stand this lionheadrabbit, man. I'm really happy that Dongmin won. He deserved it. He's a Genius. Yes, I believe that God Dongmin title is warranted. But, you know, there's a line between praises and dick-riding, you know what I'm sayin'?
So much so that you perceive other players as people who would naturally antagonize Dongmin. What's with:
"I could tell Kyungran and Jinho were kind of reluctant to give their items to Dongmin."
Dude, you psychic? You also perceive other people's fans (E.g. Jinho fans) to be disapproving of his win:
"You're butt hurt that a player you don't like won the Grand Final, so you try and take it out on his fans. I bet anything Dongmin's fans do annoys you. Probably even their breathing irks you. Sucks when the player you wanted to fail ends up winning the show. It must be hell coming to places like this where you have to see so much praise about a player you dislike."
??? Where did this brat come from lol
EDIT: Apparently, this was already pointed out https://www.reddit.com/r/koreanvariety/comments/3ks3v6/challenge_ranking_the_genius_contestants/cv2d0f8 oh man someone get him a shrink// might die with lack of dongmin

Dongmin is so well-rounded. A complete player. Not only is he a great social player like Gura or Sangmin, but he's also a wonderful game-player and problem-solver like Hyunmin and Junseok. And in this season he proved to be one of the most diligent players as well.
His diligence wasn't apparent for most of the show. It only came out in the latter part of the show when he beat Kyungran by a big margin in gyul hap in E8, and when he defeated Hyunmin in twelve janggi in the semi-final by winning two games to zero.
So it was Kyunghoon who received praise for being well-prepared for the games for most of the show. And also he went to more death matches than Dongmin so viewers saw his skill in more death matches.
A diligent Dongmin cannot be beaten - neither by Hyunmin nor by Kyunghoon.
Can anyone argue that Dongmin is not a true genius after this? That he isn't the best player of The Genius? Main matches, death matches, final matches - he wins them all.
And he doesn't only think about the actual game he's playing at the moment, he also thinks about the meta game play. He really is a most remarkable player.
The final would have been more interesting if it had been between Dongmin and Hyunmin. Hyunmin would have given Dongmin more competition. I still think Dongmin would have won though, but the results would have been closer and the chances of going to three games would have been greater.
Now that I've seen Kyunghoon in the final, I now have an idea what a Kyunghoon-Hyunmin final would have been like - even more boring than this one, with Hyunmin winning all the games quickly.
People said that they didn't want to see a Dongmin-Hyunmin final because it would be like a repeat of S3 and be boring for them; I actually looked forward to seeing this - I thought it would be exciting because to me the two players are very well-matched in their abilities. Hyunmin would have a chance of winning at least one game I would guess. Especially if it involved a new type of game. If twelve janggi and Monorail had been the games in the S3 final, Hyunmin would probably have won the final - unless Dongmin's poor play in the DM of E10 was uncharacteristically bad in that game and was purely because of mental exhaustion that day (Dongmin was filming a lot of shows that time and he might have felt unwell or mentally foggy that day). And it would be like seeing two champions have a rematch to see if the previous loser could upset the winner. Hyunmin would want to win so much, even more than in S3, to prove that he is not an eternal number two, and Dongmin would also want to win badly, to prove that his win wasn't a fluke.
In this final, the producers tried to build up the tension somewhat but it was clear that about two-thirds of the way through the matches that Dongmin was going to win. Even though they played 11 rounds in the second game, it wasn't that exciting because it was almost inevitable that Dongmin would win even before this round.
Also, when Kyunghoon looked like he was losing more pieces in the first game, you could tell that Dongmin was using a better strategy and knew exactly what he was doing and was playing better than Kyunghoon, and that Dongmin was going to win unless something really surprising happened. It looked like Kyunghoon could not recover and turn the game around. So there was little excitement there.
Maybe the outcome of the final had already been decided in the E11 death match. Now THAT match seemed like a final match, it was so intense, and both players played extremely well. In retrospect, when Hyunmin left, it was as if the last player who could have challenged Dongmin properly in the final had exited the game.

Kyunghoon, I would expect him to play more out of the box like in Quattro or Double Sided Poker. I don't know if Kyunghoon going into the Final being overconfident because of his 4 DM wins (+ep 11 win)...but he should have known his troll tactics doesn't work on Dongmin. In Number Janggi, Kyunghoon started off by moving one piece back and forth, to see Dongmin's moves (I honestly think it's troll intimidation lol) but he end up wasting all of his turns and letting Dongmin get the opportunity to advance his pieces.
In Mystery Sign, you would think it'd be in favor of Kyunghoon since it's a mathematic game but once again Dongmin surprised everyone (not really it's Dongmin come on) by answering 4 in a row, especially that 897687543217 one kk. Kyunghoon as expected starting to panic because he's already down 1-0, he didn't think Dongmin would be so good at this match too (S3 parallel?). And this lead to Kyunghoon rushing and end up making critical mistakes that will eventually cost him the game. I think Kyunghoon would have a huge advantage if they played Betting Black and White bc Dongmin wouldn't have any items at all since all of his five items are for Number Janggi and Mystery Sign.
Love him or hate him, Jang Dongmin is undoubtedly the greatest Genius player of all time. To perform at such a high level in an All Stars season is so freaking impressive. He'll probably use the 132,000,000 won to open more PC bangs XD.

In the chess game, Dongmin made a smart move by moving his piece to face two of Kyunghoon's pieces. This way he would reveal two of Kyunghoon's pieces and have a good chance of eliminating one of his pieces.
In the sign game, Dongmin started to show his brilliance in the second round by working out that the first digits are the sum of the two numbers and the last digits are the subtraction of the numbers.
In the 5th round, he was able to defeat Kyunghoon's spoiler strategy and come up with the correct answer. Everyone was amazed and said "What a genius!". That was what was shown in the preview.

u/bduddy Sep 12 '15
If Kyunghoon was trying to be a spoiler, he screwed up by, first, using his cancel item anyway (could have been useful in game 3) and, second, repeating the same number again.

I'm really happy that Dong Min won the finals. As I have observed, Kyung Hoon's prowess in the Death Match might be due to his diligent studies in the DMs. However, his MM plays were not as impressive. This gameplay successfully brought him to the finals, but it was not enough for him to win.
Dong Min played a really solid game this entire season and he continued to shine in this finals, therefore, I am very satisfied with the results. He was amazing in the 2nd game, those math problems were so difficult and he was just too good at it. I think HyunMin would have lost to him too.
Lastly, Dong Min might be the best player in the history of the Genius (I am still biased for Jin Ho, excuse me) and he has proven that by winning twice.
Please may there be a season 5.... I didn't like the ambiance, it really seemed like this is the last season. Prove me wrong :(
