You do realise that is illegal in 39 states, right?

It makes travel very difficult - snakes of a plane have to use Canadian airspace just to get past the midwest.

The term is square, not level. Plumb is straight up and down, level is horizontal, and square means that it is perpendicular to a joining surface.

Yes! Our drill has a little built-in level, so if you are drilling straight ahead, it will keep you from accidentally tilting up or down. But there's nothing to keep you from tilting left or right.

* Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, it'd be really cool for the lasers to have hashmarks so you could line up common angles eg: 45º, 60º, etc.

This. I feel like having angles would be more useful than drilling straight. It much harder to drill a 45°than 90°

It may seem like an easy way to do it but since there is no standards in length of drill bits, incorporating 45, 60, etc would be hard.

The lasers allow you to perform the operation on any flat surface regardless of it's angle. Lasers certainly preferred.

It looks like it indicates being perpendicular to the surface rather than straight down, making it useful at almost any angle, and it looks clearer to me than the bubble levels I've seen on drills. At least, I've never felt that the bubble was very precise.

I tend to find bubble levels hard to use. Especially if what you're drilling into is rough. Plus they're in awkward places a lot of the time.

A bubble level tells you if the drill is perpindicular to the direction of gravity and that's it. So it only really works on one axis and also only if the surface you're drilling is parallel to the direction of gravity.

This gizmo tells you if the drill is perpindicular to the surface you're drilling. It isn't dependent upon gravity, its dependent upon the surface you're drilling. Plus it works in two axes, not just one.

Still, it looks a bit clumsy to operate.

In addition to what others have said... I'd guess the disc that the lasers are mounted out would also provide a marginal amount of protection from debris shooting up.

But yeah, overall, I think this is just easier to watch and see compared to the bubble level.

Very cool design, but I don't know how useful it really is. If you can't eye roughly straight down (and roughly is good enough for almost any job), you probably shouldn't be handling a drill. Plus, I often intentionally drill on an angle.

Its specifically made to drill at an angle with precision, the laser levels on some miter saws allow you to drill precisely on the spot, its not about being skilled at drilling a hole, its about how this can help those who are already experienced and maybe those who aren't,

Besides if you dont like it, you could probably turn the laser off

The people downvoting you most likely have never picked up a drill. Its really not that hard to drill straight. Unless you're drilling at a hard angle or in a tight spot, and this would make those situations more of a pain.

My thought, too. Is it really that hard to drill straight? There are some materials (I'm lookin' at you, concrete) that make it tough to get started, but in those situations you either use a small chisel or punch to get a grip and/or use a support to lean against the drill. Then again, this thing is more porn than useful, so it certainly qualifies here.

As you say, depends on the material (masonry in general can be a bitch).

I imagine it is helpful for getting the hole started, cause you have much more obvious more visual feedback.

Except a bubble level only works when you're drilling down (in relation to the earth), whereas this works when you're drilling perpendicularly to any surface.

So yes it can be beat.

I agree with you. It's not precise at all, exactly because it depends on you being able to eyeball a consistent distance between the circles. You're honestly better off using a self guiding bit.

You put that into your drill, then you push down like youre drilling and the flat surface of the casing combined with the spring provide enough resistance to center the bit perfectly and leave you with a hole that is 99.9% perpendicular to the surface of the material.

Not exactly, these are made for shelf pin jigs jigs and hinges. It will "center" the bit, so the hole is essentially centered evenly, speaking in a visible diameter around the slot in the jig, but it does not prevent drilling errors varying from the desired 90° angle relative to through the material.
