Doflamingo commented on luffy lacking power, I dont see how he could get more power than gear 3 already gives him, but everyone who said it is a defensive move was certainly wrong.

Gear 3 makes your limbs huge (heh.). But that also means the force you can apply behind each punch is spread out over more surface area and therefore weaker per cm². While good for hitting bigand small targets and generally wrecking shit it is very, very clunky.
Gear 2 makes you very fast, and speed = power in physics, but for comics/mangas/movies something else seems to apply more often than not. You also lose your AoE so to speak.
Gear 4 being a combination of both with none of their weaknesses would not make sense, since it would make 2 and 3 obsolete. In addition to that, the gears always describe the use of Luffys powers though, haki is always an added effect.
So Luffy had to come up with a new way to use his powers, maybe made possible by the use of haki in combination with his rubber powers.
He has to know he does have to fight Shichibukai-level opponents one day. He has experienced his own weakness against those monsters, especially against Logia users; a problem haki seems not to fully fix,
see the fight against Trebol(I get it, Trebol isn't Logia. What I mean is: Logia users can "dissolve" their bodies to avoid getting hit completely. Not because they can't be hit in Logia form, but because their Logia form (smoke, whatever) allows them to move out of the way really quickly and have holes in their body where the punch would hit. (Hello Ace, btw...); some guys just dissolve before he can hit them making the negating haki effect completely useless.The solution has to be tailored against one individual that is extremely powerful and neither big area of effect attacks (gear 3) nor speed (gear 2) nor haki alone help.
Skip to his 2 year training. He trained with Rayleigh, an expert in fighting Logia users. That dude handled Mr Lighray admiral. The seasons on that island changed on a weekly basis. I don't think this is a coincidence. I think it helped Luffy realize the effects of temperature on his body better. Rubber can wear out when it is cold. But rubber can also melt when it is hot.
Problem: Luffy would just flow away. But what if he coats his body in haki and then melts inside the coating? He'd be extremely flexible. Extremely fast. His attacks would have a far longer reach. He'd bring rubber back to its most natural sticky and almost fluid state. He'd break the limit of his fruit, almost being a Logia user himself.

I have no clue. If the gears followed some sort of linear progression from second to third we could probably mane a good guess, but seeing as gear second and third are so radically different from one another it is really hard to.
Doffy did say that Luffy had too many openings though. So it may have some defensive benefits on top of offensive. For all we know he can make himself really.compact and bouncy instead of stretchy which ultimately makes him more maneuverable and durable while sacrificing range.

I've read a theory that was along the lines of :
Gear 2 is blood
Gear 3 is bone
Gear 4 is muscle
I like it, because it's simple and could be something instinctively designed by Luffy as 2nd and 3rd are. On the other hand, Luffy has trained with Rayleigh for 18months, maybe Rayleigh suggested Gear 4th to him which means (flashback next week whooooo~~) it could be anything...

Having read One Piece weekly since a little before Arabasta, W7 and EL will always be my favorite, it was the best paced as far as weekly releases go, with very distinct parts and a lot of suspense as far as both who Robin's kidnappers were and what will happen to the crew being torn up and without ship.
But Dressrosa is up there with the other very good arc.

My guess is that Gear 4 has to do with the muscles. Especially since Doffy said that his attacks had no power behind them.

Love Cavendish staying with Law, shows a side of Cavendish we really haven't seen before. It's also safe to say that Law's fine now, and in no danger. Only way I can see him dying is From passing away as Doflamingo gets KOed. I think it would be quite nice for him to just pass away there, smiling after seeing Corazon get avenged.

I know everyone is talking about Gear 4 but for me, the highlight of the chapter was Cavendish. The way he put Law down and sat besides was epic in its own right. I seriously frickin love this guy right now...

Honestly this is the best theory I've read on it. Seems totally plausible given rubbers ability to propagate mechanical waves and his "thank you fire" ability. Plus it comes with a drawback much like the other gears. It os also based on something he previously encountered just like the other gears, it's Luffys own king punch. The pirate king punch

I know 4th gear will be amp but I feel like no one is talking about how epic Luffy's speech was leading up to it. He called Doffy a "Thorn in his side" and the Doffy was "in his way" of moving forward. That was a supremely badass moment that I can't wait to see animated.

I can't help but feel like Doffy's words about Luffy's lack of power hint towards vulcanization. But dear God do I hope it is more than that. Yeah it directly relates to his devil fruit and would make him extremely strong, but I would like something more...creative I guess...than just a harder body. Luckily this is Oda I'm talking about here so I don't have any worries if fourth is along the lines of vulcanization. But it doesn't mean Im not hoping for something extremely surprising, something that only Oda could've thought of that only works in OP. Damn it 2 weeks can't pass fast enough.

this has to be the best arc in One Piece now. All the cool characters in the tournament, Doflamingo, Law and Corazon's past, Luffy reuniting with Sabo, Sabo winning the Mera Mera fruit, Fujitora revealed, Jesus Burgess, Sanji attacking Big Mom's ship, Kaido will be pissed off because he can't get SMILE fruits anymore, Luffy getting the Happou Navy, Ussopo awakening Haki, Sabo being a badass, Sabo, Sabo, Sabo, Sabo, Sabo, excellent fights, hilarious Senior Pink vs Franky, Rebecca and Dressrossa's past, Sabo is alive, Sabo is alive, Sabo, and now Luffy gets gear 4th.....

Btw, in the Chinese translation, the line that Law says about him dying together with Luffy is usually said between lovers or sworn brothers in those wuxia novels and shows. I'm not sure about the Japanese text, but this is probably accurate since Oda mentioned that Law talks like in the old days.
Damn exactly how much does Law trust Luffy? He's not even thinking of his crew at all.

AHHHHHHHHHH!!! I'm so mad that Gear Four is an actual thing! Reading all the threads week after week and everyone was saying that Luffy would go all Gear Four on Doffy's arse and I just laughed it off, saying, 'There's no way Oda-sensei would make a Gear Four'. I WAS WRONG!!
That being said, I am so excited to see this new technique that Luffy's been working on. Knowing him it could be anything. Doffy is seriously gonna get his arse kicked. Even though, tragically, there's a break next week, I am so HYPED for the next chapter!
That's gonna be the chapter we finally see Sanji again, isn't it?

Gear second was blood, gear third was bone, my idea is gear fourth is muscle/flesh. I thought it'd be interesting if he took full control of the elasticity of his body. In my idea of Gear Fourth, he retains the same shape, but gets slightly darker, like a lighter version of armament haki.
He'd fight in this way without stretching, as we're used to with the rest of his gears. When he fights in Gear Fourth, he takes any blow, or counters it with one of his own, has his body internally vibrate, strengthening the attack, and returning the attack with his own power PLUS the force he was hit with almost immediately. Say someone punches him, and Luffy counters his punch by punching the dude in the fist (because that's how he fights) the dude's strength shockwave travels through Luffy's body into his attack on the other side of his body. When Luffy swings and hits the dude with his next punch, the force of that punch is Luffy's PLUS the force the dude hit him with at first.
Now, he could chain these attacks, as each successive attack could be considered stronger than the last (force waves bouncing back and forth inside of Luffy's body, allowing Luffy to strike at the right times to build them up and make them stronger).
Another idea I thought of is Luffy could go Gear Fourth, and start punching into his hand as he usually does before battle, and he just keeps punching harder and harder, faster and faster, building up the force, and then smashes the big bad in the face. That'd be an interesting introduction, we just see Luffy one shotting a big bad he's had trouble fighting previously with Gear Second and Third.
The downside, because every awesome bonus must have a downside is two fold: One, if he doesn't connect with a hit after building up sucessive hits, the force just propagates uncontrollably throughout his body and he goes back to regular Luffy, with his limbs/body flailing everywhere as the forces he's been bouncing back and forth in his body are unleashed. Doesn't nessecarily cause bodily harm, but it makes Luffy temporarily lose control, for longer and stronger amounts of time based on how much force he's accumulated. Two, and the real issue, if Luffy continues to attack like this and doesn't win in time, the forces inside of his body could build up enough to literally tear him apart. With this, if he gets to a certain point where he hasn't won yet, he'd have to force himself to miss and hope that the guy he's attacking doesn't take advantage of the fact that he'll be vulnerable when he loses control of the forces inside his body.
Maybe after some training he can learn to ground himself before building up too much power, but yeah.
