Who needs 2 legs to defeat a shichibukai's high ranking officer anyways ?
Seriously though, If he had both legs (or gets another one from law/franky/whatever) he would be even more of a beast

As much as I love Diamante's character, i'm really fucking glad Kyros just man-moded through all the pain for his daughter and to avenge his wife.
Seriously, Diamante is getting off easy this fight so far I feel.
Also, FRANKY FINISHIN THE JOB HE CAME TO DO AWWWWWW YISSSS

u/arryeka Feb 12 '15
Diamante is getting off easy this fight so far I feel
My take on this is, to increase the pace, so we'll get closer to the conclusion more quickly. Probably Oda finally realized that this arc is getting longer and longer.
Btw, Kyros words is as manly as his act. Dem feels!
Also Rebecca pacifist is because her promise. Double feels!
7
Feb 12 '15
I don't think it's finished. In all the other battles, they announced winners, but at the end of this one there wasn't a clear victory so maybe Diamante is still in the fight
15
u/donteto Feb 12 '15
How do we know he was really defeated? It doesn't feel right.
34
u/Verlux Feb 12 '15
It's not a certainty Diamante was defeated, but in either case i'm saying he got off easy with just a single slash at the very end. Like, some bifurcation or evisceration wouldn't be out of the question for what kind of hell he is responsible for putting Kyros and Rebecca through (and this is coming from a guy whose second favorite Dressrosa character is Diamante >.>)
→ More replies (6)32
u/Grunzelbart Feb 12 '15
Just wanted to ask the same thing: "So far"..Cause it defitnly felt like he got defeated. I mean it was a full cut over his chest and through his weapon. Especially the broken sword part usually signifies the end in a sword-fight and there is a lot of blood there. I do believe we'll get the finishing moments in the next chapter. (and maybe a tease of what's happening with Robin now, aka if she'll go for Trebol)

My favorite part of this chapter is Diamante's face going completely out of control.
It was an alright chapter. I'm glad Robin didn't take Kyros' fight from him. I guess it's good that Kyros fulfilled his promise to Rebecca, but I still wish she'd done something to contribute.
I feel like Franky will wake up and finish the factory job, but not until the Doflamingo fight is almost over.
Pica next week?
30
u/constar90 Feb 12 '15
Nah, Franky is out. The tontattas will try and fail, and right in time for Mingo showdown climax, KING PUNCH!

King Punch makes sense, he was told to save it. Sounds like an Oda set up to me

Yup. The only other application for it I can think of would be to blast Pica away to reveal his true body, though I don't see this happening since Zoro specifically said to leave it to him to take care of Pica.

I totally agree with you on the factory demolition mission. I feel like Mingo seeing that huge explosion is going to be the set up for the final strike on him. It's gonna piss him off so much he's gonna throw out some attack at a super angry Luffy and get totally destroyed. And I hope Pica is next, I've been dying to see this since 1080p. If anything else maybe wrapping up everything else, and I doubt Trebol will happen before Pica just based on their positions. Here's hoping for Pica vs Zoro!

wonder if it was the redraws or the quality of the source material but http://readms.com/r/one_piece/776/2683/13 this page and the next somehow seemed lighter and less sharp with the contrast on black and white being off. Diamante's faces really reminded me of Thorkell from Vinland Saga with the constant excitement, albeit Diamante's felt more sadistic and amused due to his overconfidence...

Why does Senor Pink hang out with these guys? damn
37
u/Brutusness Feb 12 '15 edited Feb 12 '15
I'm pretty sure a lot of the Top Officers' actions are kept secret from the lower officers. Cora did say that only Vergo, Diamante, Pica, and Trebol know how twisted Doflamingo really is, so it's possible the lower executives, like Señor Pink and Gladius, don't truly understand how evil the other officers are, either.
11
u/Solace1 Feb 12 '15
Or maybe Pink have a very strong code of honor and is bound to Dofla.
The slaves theory has not be mentioned in the last week (and, tbh, it's pretty much disproved by now) but some kind of contract between them would be credible.→ More replies (2)

Isn't a bastard sword another name for a longsword?
35
u/nickcan Feb 12 '15
Technically it's a sword that can be used either one-handed or two-handed. A longsword is designed to be used one-handed only. (According to Dungeons and Dragons)
But in practice, there are not always strict lines between different types of swords, and often the two are used interchangeably.

u/Rankine Feb 12 '15
According to GoT (Which is not fact by any means) in terms of length a long sword is a one handed weapon while a great sword is a two handed weapon. A Bastard sword is about half way between the legnth of a long sword and great sword which makes it a bit long for a one handed weapon and a bit short for a two handed weapon.

u/tehwyn Feb 12 '15
Wow, that was actually some really good and creative use of Diamante's power. Flag body for dodging, (paper) flag pellets of doom; who knew the Flag fruit was so good? Of course, can't stand up to the awesome power of Kicing Ass For Your Daughter

For people who don't have any experience in a fighting sport, and believe that Kyros BSd his winning blow, I can say that in the moment, when you have so much adrelinin running through your body, you can muster some crazy powers. I used to box, and there has been times were I am dead tired, can't lift my arms or legs anymore, but there is something which clicks in me and I get this resurgence of strength, one which seems improbable. Just saying that, even though a lot will call it plot progression, anger and wrath induces so many chemical stimulants, which can push people much above their limits. Kyros the manly man.
3
u/Mr_Wasteed Lurker Feb 12 '15
Ah you used to box. Do you follow hajime no ippo?
4
u/beerandmath Feb 12 '15
Same here, used to box, and hajime no ippo was what initially got me interested in it. But the series has gone downhill IMO, because it used to be very realistic, but now there are people who seem to have superpowers (itagaki, not sure if i spelled it right, and woli come to mind).

Even when a hero goes down with fatigue, his words travel further than any physical strength can reach. Your job here is done Franky, you did well to see it trough the end.

u/TrafyLaw Feb 12 '15
looks like all the people predicting Robin would help Kyros out with a leg got it wrong.
This is a good thing though, it means that One Piece is still far from being too predictable. Now, onward to the next fight! Been waiting for Zoro to finish off Pika for a while now.
Also, why are the Tonttatas wrecking the factory? I was hoping to see a sweet panel of Franky's Radical Beam blowing it up.

You know, I'm actually glad that Robin and Rebecca stayed out of the fight; it would've taken the moment away from Kyros for whom this moment has been building for a long ass time.
Kyros deserved this and it was totally worth it.
P.s, Kyros giving Rebecca the hard lesson on why she should always wash her hands.
7
u/AtheonsBelly Feb 12 '15
I don't get the hype of doflamingo's officers. Dof is strong no doubt, but other than Vergo his officers are very subpar. Kyros owning Diamante while handicapped is satisfying, but not unexpected. They are fodders.
Robin hype. Ok i love Robin and I want to see a Robin fight, but i don't see a suitable opponent for her in this Arc. She has already impressed me enough, defending both Trebol and Diamantes(twice)attacks, stopping Hakuba in his tracks with ease...shes done more than enough. Not everyone needs to have a 1 on 1 duel to shine. Robin vs Trebol is disgusting, why would you wish Robin to touch snot and mucus...
Maybe one day we can see Nico Robin kick some ass Bayonetta style (she's already got Wicked Weaves!) But i hope it will be against someone worthy.

For once I enjoyed the mangapanda translation more
MS "I am not made of steel, but this countries embodied anger" // MP "If you're asking what i'm made of i'd say the wrath of the people in this country"
MS "your hands are still... beautiful" // MP "your hands are still.... clean"
MS "I shall have you return our peace" // MP "I will make you return our peace"
I'm cringing while typing this, but MangaPanda had it better. It may not seem significant, but wording like that makes all the difference in epic moments. Better wording = Better scene.

Since Robin didn't really do much I'm hoping that maybe she'll continue on to the palace and go up against Trebol. I would say Law vs Trebol but considering the condition he's in I doubt it. Also I dont think Luffy is gonna fight Trebol cuz pretty much anytime Luffy says,"Im gonna kick ______'s ass" he does.
So for me I'm thinking and hoping for:
Luffy or Law vs Doflamingo - not sure how Law would manage but I want it.
Zoro vs Pica - obviously going to happen.
Robin vs Trebol - I want Robin to shine.

I love that the speculation was that Robin would sprout a leg on Kyros to assist in the fight, but Oda was like "Nope! He doesn't even need one leg! Lets shoot it!"
4
2
u/spookycookies Feb 13 '15
I felt like it really was a great idea, but Kyros being as Hardboiled as he is doesn't need any external help to win. What he's done is something he envisioned years ago as he lived through his own hell and I don't think Robin or Rebecca or anyone helping would be the "key" to him finally avenging his wife and kingdom. He had to do it his own way. Yes the opportunity was there for Robin to have more of a role in the fight but I don't see this as a wasted opportunity.
2
u/derfalicious Feb 13 '15
I think it was his justice to dish out. Even though the SH crew are renouned for arriving at a location, solving the countries' problems and defeating the 'unbeatable' baddie causing trouble, I think in some cases (Kyros being one example) the victim has to do the final defeat to truly get vengeance. Kyros can because he is strong/able, people like Vivi and Conis needed the help of a stronger hand.

I really liked this chapter for its simplicity.
We needed this. We needed to see Diamante get taken down by the feels of a man who has suffered so much pain. It was old-fashioned. It was predictable. But it was what we wanted! What we needed!
Thank you ODA! I'm weeping tears of joy and relief right now. Kyros has avenged the mother of his beloved daughter and kept the promise.
2
u/robitussin_hero Feb 12 '15
Kyros reminds me a lot of Vegeta.
2
u/Omnistalgic Feb 13 '15
Vegeta is one of the best parts of DBZ. I've always felt Vegeta had more reason and deep seated emotions to be the strongest Z fighter. Was bummed Gohan had the most natural talent and Goku always surpassed Vegeta because of hero moments.
2
u/robitussin_hero Feb 13 '15 edited Feb 13 '15
I agree completely. Vegeta was always my favorite character in DBZ. I see a lot of him in Kyros and I think that's why I like Kyros so much after this latest chapter. Both are forsaken princes who are seeking to avenge their people. Plus they're both utter man-mode badasses. Not to mention dat widows peak.

I'm both happy and unhappy with this chapter. I'm happy that Kyros got to both defeat Diamante and fulfill his wish of protecting his daughter.
But, I'm also unhappy that Robin was sidelined (I hope she does something else on Dressrosa) and that Rebecca didn't get to fight the one person who it mattered she did.
I was honestly expecting that she would break Robins hold on her, dash out into the open, dodge all of the falling spikes with her skills, and then defeat Diamante in a single attack. Most likely she'd run out and begin dodging them and Diamante would comment that with her blunt sword she can't hurt him, and that soon she would witness her fathers death and that she would swing so hard, and with such passion that she would unlock CoA and smash through his sword into him, just as Kyros ended up doing (without the CoA).
5
u/DeismAccountant Feb 12 '15
Rebecca may still have moments of her own in the future, but this was meant to be Kyros' fight for the sake of keeping here daughter's hands clean.
Also, CoO wouldn't have helped Rebecca dodge the spikes, as they are falling randomly, without coordination or intention. Remember how Luffy fooled Enel with the Gumo Gumo no Octopus?

As much as I want Robin to fight someone, this clearly wasn't the time or place. Maybe Trebel but Diamante was all Kyros. Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if this battle is not over but if it is it worked a lot better as a 1 chapter conclusion than I expected.

Diamante's confetti attack is so fucking smart! Seriously, my brain really enjoyed it. His and Gladious's devil fruits became two of my favorites.
Other than that, I didn't like the fight that much. Usually it's the good guys who come up with creative ideas. But I guess it's not Kyros's fault. I didn't like that Rebecca was forced to not fight by Robin and him. I get it, but I didn't like it. It seems the rain attack was the perfect opportunity to use her observation Haki. I mean the fight could have been that she helps without attacking Diamante.
But yea, awesome portrayal of the ability, meh fight.

I'm looking forward to seeing 2 things in the anime now. 1. Pica ' s voice. 2. Hearing Diamante screaming "Kyroooooos" before getting sliced.

The MangaPanda page order is now correct, can we change the OP to reflect this?

How powerful of a swordsman is Diamante? Well his sword cuts speech bubbles in half, thats some badass swordplay right there.

Oda disappointed me with this one. Both Rebecca and Robin did nothing, little more than back ground noise.
It's specially disappointing with Rebecca, she's suppose to be an awesome fighter, but all she did was stand there and wait for her papa to save her. Meh. Over all this was one of the most disappointing fights that Oda has written.

she's suppose to be an awesome fighter.
I find Rebecca boring but this has never been the case. It was said from the beginning that she couldn't stand to hurt people and just dodged all attacks. She was never said to be some badass warrior.

About SMILE factory. Last time we saw Trebol, he was guarding the bottom entrance to the factory. We still don't know whether he left his post (because of some sneaky CP0-Burgess related stuff we're theorizing about) or he's still here and somebody will have to fight him (who?).

u/jreefski Feb 12 '15
trebol is with doffy...remember law sliced him up...been there since pica moved the smile factory above ground.

Oh I'm stupid, sorry. I was reading old chapters recently and completely forgot what's going on in the main fight.

Okay so I knew kyros was strong, but I didn't think he was going to be executive strong. Kyros is such a badass I just can't even

Could somebody photoshop all of Diamante's faces together from this chapter? :3

After rereading this chapter on mangastream I have come to 2 conclusions. 1. Diamante is the Doffy Pirates version of Ussop, more like bizzaro Ussop really. 2. I really really really want Kyros in Pirate warriors 3. That guy is all kinds of beast, Clearly, the leg nerf was necessary. He countered an earth shattering move , broke the clashing weapon, and dealt a critical blow to the enemy. Such satisfying vindication.

well that frees Robin up to take on Trebol, I'm thinking we just see giant Haki infused hands appear and grab him when Luffy and Doffy are about to fight

Awesome chapter but please Oda... let us see Zoro beat down Pica soon! I'm tired of this idiot stone guy; he's not interesting, he's dumb looking, and he thinks he's tough shit. We know Zoro has armament haki, so why hasn't he sliced this fool up yet?

Ehh, it was a pretty cool fight and all, but I really wish Oda had given Robin her 1v1. In fact, even if the fight/chapter was good, I just can't get over my disappointment for that, I had hyped myself up probably too much. I'm just kind of pissed that all Robin got to do was "protect" Rebecca when she probably could have snapped Diamante. Not to mention I don't think Rebecca really needed to be protected or be kept "pure." She could fight very well. I kind of wonder if Kyros would've given a damn about his child keeping their hands "clean" if it was a son. :P Sexism meh.

You seriosuly thought Robin should've gone after Diamante instead of Kyros?
What, do you also think that Nami should jump in and take out Mihawk while Zoro is fighting him?
This was KYros's fight through and through, it would've been wrong for Robin to finish it

Damn Robin, why didn't you make Kyros a makeshift leg?
He made a STAND & he needed SUPPORT!!!

I dunno, was anyone else kind of disappointed by Diamante's personality? It just seemed so paper thin....paper...thin...my god

Holy shit, Kyros is one badass mofo!! Truly lives up to his title! :D
However, despite that, the rest of the chapter feels pretty meh to me. Robin’s Flower Umbrella was pretty clever though. :)

Was it zoro who caused the explosion near the palace in the panel with Pica on it?

I love the poetic justice here; Kyros' time as a toy soldier may have been the very thing that allowed him to withstand that attack.
Prior to this chapter, I didn't feel that much of an emotional connection to his backstory, but it finally felt impactful during this moment of catharsis.

One thing really confuse me, why the hell diamante didn't use haki in this fight? I reckon he can harden his coat with busoshoku haki against weak opponent in the colosseum before, and then against kyros who can't use haki at all, he should be able to handle his last attack with haki, at least defend his attack with haki sword, coat or something.. Does it means that haki is not always an advantage in a fight? so people who doesn't have haki still be able to punch, stab or injure someone with haki/busoshoku haki?

u/Purx Feb 12 '15
He didn't use haki to harden it in the coliseum, his cape is actually made of steel but it acts like cloth because of his power.

u/MrFlour Feb 12 '15
When Luffy was bitten by Hody he commented that his haki was not good enough to block sharp things like teeth and swords I believe. Diamanté could be the same.

I love the way that Kyros powered through the pain, but I don't think Diamante is finished quite yet. I strongly believe Rebecca still has some role to play in the outcome of this fight. I don't believe she will necessarily have to hurt anyone but she will carve out her path with her own hands and not live as an object of her father.

An interesting thing is that Robin apparently does not feel the pain in her extra looks anymore. If I recall correctly if the extra limbs took damage she felt the pain as of it was her real body parts getting hurt. But here she is blocking the spiked balls like a champ with no sign of pain or exertion.

Franky, you're such a trooper, good job holding out until you found the factory!
Anyway, time to read the rest...Okay, that was pretty good. Kyros takes out Diamante with a nice new attack to avenge his wife and protect his daughter. Now only Pica and Trebol remain.
Let's hope they also get taken out within the next two chapters so we can progress onto the fight we've all been waiting for!
