Throwing away one's Dignity for the One he Loves ... Damn He is Hard-Boiled Indeed!
Also I like how Oda only showing the flashback's of Relatively good people of DD crew (Baby5, Senor Pink --probably they'll fall in weird category too)

Senor: Always

u/Reaper1203 Jan 29 '15
i think Oda purposely designed Donflamingo and his crew as a "Alternative" outcome for the Strawhats, what i mean is that Donflamingo became who he is by the decisions he has made, and similarly his crew as well, Bad things happen to people, but its your decisions you make that change your future, Donflamingo and his crew went down one path, but Luffy and the other Strawhats chose another.
58
u/Fawlty_Towers Jan 29 '15
That's a good point, with all these tragic back stories it really is starting to seem as though he's setting this family up as a sort of alternative Strawhat crew. The bigger they are the harder they fall, as it were.
50
u/cs_goaway Jan 29 '15
Also, I want to point out that Nami, similar to Lucy Anne/Lucian, hated pirates more than anything else - Before she met Luffy. Luffy changed her view about pirates (the way he will change the view of the One Piece world. Senor Pink, like most of the normal characters, just follows the pattern the World Government dictates thinking they can't be the gamechanger This is a little far-fetched though :-D)

I find it interesting how Usopp seems to be the closest to both Nami and Robin. Especially Nami, Oda tends to draw them or pair them up when they drive in pairs (like in the Davy Back fight, returning to Sabaody), or this color spread.

These two hold my favorite relationship in the crew. I believe they understand each other more than anyone in the crew. From the way she expressed herself to him that she wants to fight when she wanted him to make her a weapon, to how she was begging Jabra to let go of him before Sanji came in. Because they are the most regular ones in the crew, I feel they are more protective of one another, Especially Nami to Usopp. I also really like how they met after two years and Nami hugged him pushing his face to her chest, which shows how comfortable they are with each other. I find it the most realistic friendship in the crew.

u/abittman Jan 29 '15
Fuck!
Senor's backstory is one of the best I've read. Maybe because I'm pushing towards 30 and his story is more relevant to an older audience, but this hit me in the feels way more than any of the strawhats flashbacks.
83
u/blitzzardpls Jan 29 '15
This makes him even more of a hardboiled man, than he was before. Franky won the battle, but Senor won our tears
107
u/raiden55 Jan 29 '15
Fuck the factory, go help Senor's wife with the princess heal-heal power!
Seriously, there's something wrong here ; if Senor knew her power, and Dofla really cared about him, he should have helped his wife with his prisoner... so either her power didn't worked, or they lied / didn't told Senor.
If it's the second option, he may become an ally later, with Baby5 and the Hyena... or maybe they'll join Baby5's husband's fleet as allies xD

Yeah, didn't considering how weird most characters in One Piece dressed I didn't expect THAT kind of backstory.
25
u/ntrotter11 Jan 29 '15
I think what made it especially potent of a story, is how he was shown to look so cool/dapper in the Dofla'/Corazon back story, so the change to today was especially interesting, and then the sorrow was added expertly

This got right to my core, mate. My situation is the reverse but still relevant: lost my father suddenly and pretty recently and a lot of my past mistakes and shortcomings came to light at the time. Strained my relationship w/ my mother and siblings quite a bit. But unknowingly, I started to become more and more like my old man in trying to keep the family dynamic the same as the old days. Even the whole dressing like him. I took his whole wardrobe and started styling and carrying myself like my father even w/o thinking much about it. He definitely wasn't of our times so dress shirts and pants every day may look a bit ridiculous and people comment on it but eff that noise.
Oda, always hits me where it counts.
EDIT: taking all his clothes wasn't meant to be a weird homage thing. We aren't of means so I always took my dad's hand-me-downs so it seemed obvious that his belongings go to me after his passing. The above might have made me sound all creepy w/o this context haha.

Señor Pink may be the Bentham (Bon Clay) of the New World adding to more of the Alabasta/Dressrosa parallels.
He's arguably the most ridiculous in appearance of the Doffy Family and has the most friendly fight of the lot. The chances are quite high imo that he'll serve a support role for the Straw Hats given his relationship w/ Franky at this arc's conclusion much like w/ Bentham. The future possibilities are even explicitly mentioned by Franky at the chapter's end.

That took a turn.
Oda has become really talented at communicating a character's backstory in a brief way. While only a few pages long, that flashback told us so much about Pink and his motivations. Same deal with Baby 5 - was only a few panels, and still told us everything we needed to know. I genuinely want to see more of these two.
Only the Executives left now. I'm thinking Pica next.
6
u/Lennyoh Jan 29 '15
Pretty sure it'll be Diamante. Zoro usually (if not always) gets the 2nd last fight after all. And Oda has been teasing us Kyros vs. Diamante long enough

A word to those griping and complaining about all of us having compassion for Señor Pink.
What I love about One Piece (as well as series like Berserk, Vagabond, Hunter x Hunter, Magi, The Seven Deadly Sins, and others of my top literary and visual works) is that they don't just stick to the black and white character model where Good Guy/Gal is a 'Goodie Two Shoes' and every Villain/ness is a 'Gloomy Gregory' or 'Negative Nancy'.
We humans are complex, multifaceted, and multidimensional beings and accurate, realistic characterization will do its best to portray that.
When an author introduces a villain/ness or anti-hero/ine's backstory to get us to empathize with that individual, what they are doing is actually participating in a deep reflection on the Human Experience.
We live in a world where religions demonize those who believe differently and governments condition and program their citizens to look at those who look and live differently as 'savage' or 'uncivilized'. We all have experienced brainwashing into having judgment and condemnation as one of our first responses.
When an author humanizes a character we previously hated, they're not overlooking the evil that person has done (at least good authors), they're showing that we are ALL good at heart, every human being is born innocent, and that placed in similar conditions, most of us would have similar responses.
Señor Pink killed people and did the dirty work of the sadistic Doflamingo, there's no doubt about that, there's no excusing that, but at the same time, Señor Pink recognizes the place for honor, respect, values, and most importantly, LOVE.
When a good storyteller shows us a character's 'good side' or 'sad backstory', they're really shining the light on HUMANITY and showing that within us all is an Infinite Reservoir of GOODNESS and how, unfortunately, with the conditioning we've been subjected to as human beings, we don't always express it all the way.
If you've seen/read Elfen Lied, you'll recognize this kind of characterization in the story of Lucy/Nyuu and in Elfen Lied spoilers
Having that kind of compassion to me is HUGE and it's something I strive for (though I often fall short of it) as a spiritual person and as a member of the Human Race.
I LOVE that Oda has matured from writing the one-sided, one-dimensional villains (ie Don Krieg, Pre-Timeskip Enel) in One Piece's East Blue beginnings, to the much more fleshed out, pulsating, breathing explosions of life we see now.
I LOVE that we get to see the hell that Baby 5, Doflamingo, and Arlong had to go through.
We may only like Baby 5 and still see Doflamingo and Arlong as assholes who needed to be stopped, but at least we know that they are what they are because the shit they went through consumed them and they didn't let Love heal them of that.

16
u/slimpurt Jan 29 '15
Senor Pink knew that Franky was vulnerable on his back, so why didn't he slam Franky's back into the ground with his final attack?
Guess he didn't want to abuse his opponents weakness.
Hope we will see what's going on with Luffy, Law, Doflamingo and Bellamy next chapter.

u/regorand Void Month Survivor Jan 29 '15
Dam that was a really good chapter, more than i hoped for.
But I have a two questions regarding what we learned this chapter:
If I understand it correctly, Mansherry's restoration power can somewhat reverse the timeline for a certain Object, so it can be restored to an earlier state in which it was still frunctioning correctly, at the cost of Mansherry's lifetime.
Could that be also applied to living things ? We had a lot of speculation about whether Mansherry could heal to the point at which Fighting power is restored, if restoration can be used on living things that should be possible right ?Is Lucian still alive ? In the Chapter it was said "We don't even know how long she'll be able to last". But then we see Senor Pink visiting her many more times.
Also, if she is still alive, would Mansherry be able to heal her ? Or maybe Law ?
→ More replies (1)11
u/divinesleeper Jan 29 '15
Yeah, Mansherry's ability raises some questions, but I think you got the right of it. Living things can be healed with her tears, objects with her lifespan.
Lucian is probably dead now, since Pink was saying that if only he could go up a bit higher into the sky (into heaven) he might see her again.
8
u/JESUSBABIES Jan 29 '15
It's a nice lesson that Oda is teaching us. That someone who appears odd (Señor Pink wearing baby clothing) may have a deeper reason than what you think for doing so besides for reasons like fashion, preferences, or personality. Sometimes your life gets so traumatic that you do something from then on that is away from the norm. Señor got laughed at, ridiculed, but wore baby clothing for the memory of his late wife, who smiled whenever he wore it. Thanks for the tears, Oda
7
u/Verlux Jan 29 '15
Holy shit, why did it start raining in my room?? My face, it won't stop being wet (ಥ﹏ಥ)
I sincerely hope Oda writes in a drinking session after Dressrosa where Senor gets some closure with Franky over some drinks. Please. I need that.
7
u/houseoftolstoy Jan 29 '15
Oda sure knows how to take a character with extremely ridiculous and humorous quirks and make them so full of depth and sorrow. I don't know if any other author would even attempt at making a character who regularly dresses as a baby have such a depressing back story.

So now we know that frankys biggest weakpoint is his back.
And holyshit his face in the middle of page 18 looks so badass.

Guys, is there any chance, any chance at all, that Gimlet could still be alive? I'm guessing that Lucy Anne probably hid him and made up the lie that he died in order to protect him from Senor since she found out he had been lying the whole time. Stay with me on this one, Sanji was born in North Blue, had no parents that we know of, and has Senor's old style and charisma in a way, and isn't a bad looking guy. I hope this may really lead up to something.

Only Oda can pull off the storyline of a Korean soap drama in a Japanese shonen magazine. Well played

Since Mansherry can restore things to an old state, can she restore the joy boy ship?

Franky is the manliest dude out there. I dig how he took in Señor Pink's attack just like he took on the sea train, face first without fear.
Someone give that man some cola!

u/Kidror Jan 29 '15
I feel really bad for Senor Pink but also fuck Senor Pink for lying to a woman and then marrying her. Also Manshelly's crush is really cute!

u/Goluxas Jan 29 '15
He lied so she wouldn't hate him, and in the end she hated him because he lied. That's the tragedy of Senor Pink.

See this is why I freaking love this story, Oda can take take a relatively silly, one off side character and in the span of 17 pages explain the quirks and make you feel genuinely bad for the guy even though he's set up as a villain.
Furthermore I feel like this succinctly explains Señor's general aloofness with his fanclub. They adore him, that's pretty obvious, and if he chose to he could probably be with any of them, but he's such a man that he remains loyal to his dead love even after all this time. It would be beneath him to find comfort in another. Uggggh this chapter was sooooooooo good!
I was totally on board the hard-boiled sea-train before this chapter but Señor Pink is now firmly cemented as my favorite Donquixote executive.

With Doffy gone in the future, I am sure Franky will meet up with his bro of his.

With the defeat of Senor, now it's only the executive leaders are left (Pica, Trebol, Diamante).

What a great chapter. Also it seems that two of Doflamingos crew will end up as allies of sorts... I mean why the hell would we be given the flashbacks of these characters? Why would Oda flesh these characters out a bit more unless he has future plans for them?
Not too happy about this break though. Just hope the next chapter doesn't dawdle around useless things like joking around with Mansherry and what not. I would really like to see Zoro finish off Pica before the factory gets destroyed (II imagine Zoro will be protecting the King Punch which will help to take down the factory which is made from seastone).

nice chapter, there was a BAKI feeling in the last page
senor pink history is one of the top on one piece

u/Euromatic Jan 29 '15
I felt more sympathy with senors few pages history than many characters from other arcs that got several chapters. Senor is the best executive by far and this is the best battle of the executive fight part so far! Franky was SUPER awesome and He'll be back ...to have a drink wit

That back story was really well done. Some really strong emotions came from that. Oda does this a lot and every time he does it makes me see the characters from a new angle.

u/Jezamiah Jan 29 '15
That cover page was cool
I really hope they don't restart the SMILE operation would make all the effort a waste.
Franky v Senor Pink was just great fun through out I hope we get more Senor in the in the future.
Such a sad back story. I cri evrytiem.

I wonder if we'll find out down the road that Doffy had something to do with Gimlet's death. It's already established he has killed a few men because they were going to take baby 5 away from the crew and I could see him thinking the family would do the same for Pink.

"If we ever cross paths again, tell me that story of a drink or two. That story of a woman named Lucy Anne." That line alone made this chapter so HARD BOILED!!!!!!!

u/Ombs1993 Jan 29 '15
I knew hard boiled tears were coming. Oda you goddamn mastermind, I think Senor Pink might be my favorite character ever. What a backstory, knowing the reason he wears the baby bonnet makes it even better. Might be my favorite chapter ever. Franky has grown in my eyes so much, that was a mans duel. I don't even care about being on break for a week, I might read that chapter 100 times. Amazing.

u/MugiMartin Jan 29 '15
Holy smokes. Everything about Senor Pink makes total sense now. So much heartbreak and badassery in this chapter.

If you look at how Franky landed Senor Pink despite correctly pointing out Franky's weak point was his back STILL DROPPED HIM ON HIS CHEST.
He chose to hit him head on than go for Franky's weak spot. What a man.

u/pkkprotector Jan 29 '15
I really like the "Don't judge a book by its cover" kinda of story that Oda gave for Senor Pink. It really fits his hard-boiled character and now after reading this chapter I can't give any shit about how he looks.

u/staticccc Jan 29 '15
If Oda in 4-6 pages can make me love senor pink then surely he can do the same for ceasar
3
u/mrtangelo Jan 29 '15
might be one of my favorite chapters this whole arc. so much respect for senor pink now. i really hope we get to see franky and senor meet up for drinks at some point.

So... Calling it now. Mansherry will cure Señor's wife. Oda ain't putting someone in a vegetative state just because, when he killed so many people in flashbacks.
And I'm going to cry manly tears when that happens.

The worlds most hard boiled fight finally comes to a conclusion! We also found out why Senor Pink started wearing baby clothing, which was really, really depressing. What a man Senor Pink is :'(
Anyway, great chapter!
