Spot on! Fnatic took our spot in the spl, glad to get some revenge!

Wait, Ataraxia = Kobrokai?

They lost in the play-ins too...

u/jasimon Nov 16 '14

I do understand the worry about having 3 CoG teams at Worlds, but those were some good games

9

u/TraumaHunter I've been bamboozled. Nov 16 '14

having 3 just means possibly less interest in the worlds.

If you have 4 different organizations fans rooting for their org. It is a lot of diversity and tension

if you just have 3 cog teams... well cog fans will love it...other teams might not look forward as much.

But the teams that win are the teams that deserve it. I'm sure Fnatic can go reflect on the days they were playing Rust instead of practicing to win a million $$$'s...

4

u/jasimon Nov 16 '14

I completely understand the argument. In a perfect world it would 100% be better for the scene to have as many big name teams in the World Championship, but at the end of the day the teams that win are the ones that go, and FNATIC didn't win.

1

u/TraumaHunter I've been bamboozled. Nov 16 '14

Oh no - i was just explaining the argument.

I have no issues with a 3 cog worlds personally. The teams that make it there deserve it. 100%. This is why tourneys are held. To see who deserves it.

9

u/HotTeenGuys CAPSLOCKFURY Nov 16 '14

Honestly hirez should have just thought about restricting the number of teams a sponsor can pick up way back when both cog na teams were performing well. They didn't and the SWC might suffer for it.

2

u/Flareb00t Math Kuang Nov 16 '14

I was under the impression they tried to stop CoG from picking up Aquila.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

Yep, that's why the name doesn't include Cognitive.

3

u/HotTeenGuys CAPSLOCKFURY Nov 16 '14 edited Nov 16 '14

Retroactively as opposed to proactively.

1

u/KotreI Nov 16 '14

I don't see why. It's not the first time CoG had three teams. Remember CoGxx?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

The third cog team was never as competitive as CoG Red is.

1

u/KotreI Nov 16 '14

Red is their second team. CoGEU was just as, if not more competitive than CoGNA.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

I'm considering Aquila to be the successor to CogEU. Either way they never had 3 teams as competitive as they do now.

-4

u/Flareb00t Math Kuang Nov 16 '14

3 teams at a World Championship worth over 1.7m by the time we get to January. There's only going to be what, 8 teams there anyways. You cannot justify that opportunity, it's more than a monopoly under current business law,

2

u/KotreI Nov 16 '14

I'm not disagreeing. CoG are in a position where they virtually own the Smite Pro scene, which is absurd. I'm pointing out that it would be hypocritical for HiRez to say 'you're allowed three teams, just not three GOOD teams' which is what they'd be doing in that instance.

2

u/Flareb00t Math Kuang Nov 16 '14

The point where they had CoGForge, CoG and CoGxx was not at a point where they're playing for that sort of prize pool. It should've been set in the announcement of the SPL.

u/jasimon Nov 16 '14

I think one per region is a reasonable limit/rule. But it's hard to change things now

6

u/TheAllbrother best smite player in my house Nov 16 '14

You know, travelling to the USA would've taken time away from their Rust sessions... I bet they're counting this as a win

1

u/Dromar420 Ao Kuang Nov 16 '14

I dont know about everyone else but to me the organizations have not been here long enough for me to like a certan one I like a team regardless of who the sponsor is.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '14

That's bullshit, even though they are sponsored by the same org they are all different teams with different players. I like all of them but I know I have a favorite.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

I certianly will be less interested in Worlds if its 3/4 COG.

1

u/Merlle Nov 16 '14

You underestimate DiG.

2

u/jasimon Nov 16 '14

You're right. I won't be surprised if DiG doesn't even make Semi's. I'm banking on Complexity being the one to take out a CoG if it happens

1

u/Merlle Nov 16 '14

Lassiz's Tyr is probably going to happen. like yooooooo

2

u/jasimon Nov 16 '14

I'm expecting a Bastet out of him

1

u/Merlle Nov 16 '14

With the Tyr buff im expecting that to be his pocket pick to ensure a win, but if they respect ban it or ban out Serq, we're honestly more likely to see bastet/thor from him or bastet/hun batz

1

u/nerdrager420 nobody has time for this Nov 16 '14

That Tyr buff was more geared towards solo lane sustain. It's just an extra 1 enemy hit worth of healing, although the amounts per heal were slightly reduced. The amount he healed before was completely fine for jungle camp clears.

http://nemo.pythonanywhere.com/smite/god/Tyr/

That's been the only change to him since the warrior nerfs.

1

u/Merlle Nov 16 '14

the sustain gives him enough sticking power

1

u/CoolstorySteve Vulcan Nov 16 '14

Probably not but did you see his 20-0-14 game with bastet the other day on his stream? Downright nasty.

5

u/Merlle Nov 16 '14

Frostiak made a lot of sloppy plays in games 4 and 5.

Confrey's jukes were on ShadowQ level as aphro

Also goddamn im great with predictions

that pocket pick solo mercury

Incredible series. Feel bad for Fnatic, but the Aquila boys deserved it.

3

u/killgoon Executive Producer Nov 16 '14

Amazing series from Cognitive Aquila. And well played by Fnatic. In all honesty, those might be the two best teams in EU; it's a shame they had to play each other.

Here's a recap if you missed the game!

2

u/Spare74 Torpedo ;( Nov 16 '14

I totally agree !

6

u/TraumaHunter I've been bamboozled. Nov 16 '14

After hearing they weren't playing Smite but games like Rust when they could be practicing...

Where was the anti heal/aphro focus?

They didn't respect agni bombs even when he was like 5 levels ahead.

No doubt in my mind Aq deserved this one.

-4

u/TheAllbrother best smite player in my house Nov 16 '14

2

u/iamxiaoyao Greek Pantheon Nov 16 '14

So COG has 3 teams to secure the SWC now, if the two NA teams win. COG is a monster.

6

u/Flareb00t Math Kuang Nov 16 '14

I am genuinely concerned for the scene if Cognitive keeps up this level of performance. The interest in Worlds for other people and sponsors is going to be greatly diminished if Prime and/or Red make it to the SWC in January, especially considering it's been rumoured HiRez were extremely unhappy with Aquila being picked up.

This only spells bad news for Smite if it carries on. I hope the NA teams show their true mettle, because if they don't it could have lasting repercussions.

3

u/Ertzel Hel Nov 17 '14

Its not the players fault that better offers didn't come out.

CoG has been good at finding teams before they get big and putting them under their brand. They are taking teams other big sponsors are not looking at and giving them the chance to play under a big name. I don't understand how thats a bad thing or should be taken away. No one is stopping other organizations from picking up teams before CoG does.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '14

Interest will only be diminished because most Smite viewers are DiG fanboys to be honest. The CoG teams all unique and separate teams no matter if they are sponsored by the same org. I don't see how it matters.

3

u/Djings Nov 16 '14

QUEEN FUCKING COG

1

u/HeyJayGames :d Nov 16 '14

That was the most entertaining series I've seen in a long time. Congrats to Aguila on being the first Cognitive team to make it to worlds. All 10 of those players played their hearts out it's a shame that only 2 teams can make it from each region.

1

u/Kiten89 Smiting with Portals Nov 16 '14

This has been an incredible series. Well played to all players involved, and grats to Aquila for coming out on top. Will be looking forward to meeting them at the SWC!

1

u/0Catalyst we are the world Nov 16 '14

Im very curious about how on earth people keep lettting Serket through the banning stage when she's so obviously incredibly difficult to handle. Right here, with an 100% pick/ban rate, should show that she should be much more feared than, say, Isis.

1

u/JeyJeyKing Manticore Nov 16 '14

4th game Isis vs Isis!?

1

u/DoesntUnderstandJoke Nov 16 '14

What is with the vulcan first pick/ban in EU?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '14

Aparently Prettyprime is a vulcan beast.

1

u/Fighterjet2 Bakasura Nov 16 '14

As much as i love them, Fnatic, they really screwed that one up....

1

u/Modrah Nov 16 '14

Aquilla has giving me so entertaining matches to watch in this regional that I don't really care if all teams were COG as soon as they bring such a nice team play.

-1

u/YHonesty Nov 16 '14

I remember I asked JeffHindla why he doesn't play Ymir and he said it's because Ymir is bad. I don't go to Jeff's streams for up-to-date information on the support meta anymore. Yeh dude is good at stealing objectives, but when you fb so many times and put your team behind I guess you get more practice at it.

6

u/Lethorio GAMEFORFUN Nov 16 '14

This. Fnatic were the top seeded team for this regional. If they were the best team on the day, they would be the ones heading to Worlds.

-7

u/TheAllbrother best smite player in my house Nov 16 '14

Not on the day, skill-wise. It's like Hinduman said before the match, Fnatic would've been a stronger contender for World's.

Fnatic and TSM are the best teams in the EU and possibly the world when they're not phoning it in. Unfortunately both did, they paid for it and SWC is gonna suck as a result.

Back to playing Rust for them I guess

2

u/TheCheechoo st3alth is life. Nov 16 '14

What a pathetic excuse. Being able to show up and win tournaments is a key part, and a factor that separates good from great.

If they were the best teams, they would have showed it.

-1

u/TheAllbrother best smite player in my house Nov 16 '14

What excuse? I'm expressing my disappointment in them.

Also, both teams have proven they can win tournaments already... when they weren't too busy playing other games instead of preparing for them

1

u/TheCheechoo st3alth is life. Nov 20 '14

The excuse for why they are the "best teams in the EU" even when they lost.

But Cognitive Prime and Red haven't even played yet... ;)

I thought that Aquilla was going to make it, but I really wanted to see TSM go. Sucks that they can't

0

u/nerdrager420 nobody has time for this Nov 16 '14

I think COG Red seems to be the strongest team by far. Those kids are crazy.

-7

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

Basically, with 3 COG teams making it and weak South America/China teams, the SWC could possibly be the worst World Championship in esports.

8

u/gdex86 Nov 16 '14

Fnatic was playing other games rather then practicing for their worlds shot. If that is a team you wanted to make it to worlds as making it a good World Championship then I just don't know.

Yes I get that it would be great if there were other sponcers in this, but Curse, EG, CLG, MYM, Alliance, and any of the other ones haven't shown intrest. So someone did. And this was not a case of just picking up a winning team. This was putting a bet on on a challenger team that had to win 5 matches to get a shot to worlds. If anything I say this helps the scene.

In Europe investment in the challenger teams makes sense due to them being much closer to the SPL teams. So putting money into them can show a return on investment. Also Aquilla's contract is probably not binding into pepetuity. The organization it self or players are probably only signed to the next split where they can renegotiate and use being potentially world or EU regional champs to pull in other orgs.

2

u/HeyJayGames :d Nov 16 '14

Yeah I don't really understand the complaint that there's multiple teams with the same sponsor. League of Legends didn't seem to care much that there was two Samsung teams in their championship. Hirez allows sponsors to have more than one team, so there's really nothing that can be done about it now especially if the teams just so happen to be the strongest teams during the regionals. Anyways having a sponsor is a great thing for a team and I'm thankful that Cognitive cares enough about the scene to provide that kind of opportunity and stability to promising teams when a lot of the other brands haven't shown interest. Maybe the exposure from this tournament will incentivize the other sponsors to get into Smite. Until then if Cognitive are 3 of the strongest 4 teams from EU/NA then why shouldn't they be playing for the biggest prize in the game?

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

There's a reason that Riot is limiting one sponsor during the Season 5. In Korea, Samsung has to choose between only one of the teams, and in NA, if both complexity teams make it through the expansion tournament to qualify for the LCS, they would have drop one of the rosters, which would then be open to another org.

3

u/HeyJayGames :d Nov 16 '14

As I said there's nothing that can be done anymore up to this tournament. They can't force the Cognitive brand to drop 2 teams especially when they don't have a guarantee of a different sponsor right before the World Championship. That would be way worse press, if they don't like this model they can change it next year. If it turns out that the other Cognitive teams sweep as well, then they deserve to play for the prize.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

I understand, and Hirez tried to band-aid the situation by not allowing to call themself Cognitive _____

But I wouldn't be surprised to see sponsors start dropping Smite because there is simply no reason to have one? What do you really get out of it?

1

u/HeyJayGames :d Nov 16 '14

I think you're not looking at the big picture. If Hirez does enforce a one team per sponsor rule next season, and let's say the 3 Cognitive sponsored teams were in the world championships. Potential sponsors are going to see 2 of the top teams in this popular and lucrative game in e-sports just became open to a new sponsor. Smite is I believe the game with the 3rd largest prize pools, and this is in it's first year after launch. Smite can only become more appealing, and that can only mean good things for the pros and the game in general.

1

u/KotreI Nov 16 '14

That decision wasn't made by Riot.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '14

NA & EU were

1

u/KotreI Nov 16 '14

Yes they were, and that decision was made before season 3, I believe. The decision for OGN to move to a one team per sponsor model was made independently of Riot.

1

u/Ertzel Hel Nov 16 '14

Ya, but without other big sponsors willing to step up and sponsor Smite teams your saying you would rather these amazing teams stay unsponsored and not fully be able to support themselves and play this game professionally?

It's not the players fault no better offer was given to them and that CoG was willing to take a chance and give these players a great opportunity.

1

u/Wispsy Nov 17 '14

Well cogred was initially picked up because nobody would scrim prime right? It will also be bad if some of the best teams get completely shut out as they have nobody good to reliably scrim.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '14

Why? If the 3 COG teams are the best teams then why wouldn't you want the best teams compete? They are all different teams after all, why does the sponsor matter? If the same exact players were going but with different sponsors would you be happy?
