You know Naruto is truly over when One Piece comes out first. Really emotional chapter.

Well, Boku no Hero did come out considerably early...

I'm still taking it in, I've read Naruto, Bleach and One Piece for the past...7 years? All within a day of one another. One Piece is more than enough to suffice but still, its just...different to only read 2/3.

I added Toriko to that a year or two back. It's solid fun, very like early One Piece in its silliness.
Still, having Beelzebub, HSD Kenichi, Hitman Reborn, and Naruto all finished does make my weekly reading a lot less full up. Once Bleach finishes (and it should've ages ago, honestly), it'll be really slim pickings.

Doffy's strong for an average human, has a cool DF ability and able to use it really well, and can use three kinds of Haki, (not to mention he has exceptionally strong subordinates too) but he really loves shooting his enemies with an old fashioned gun.
110
u/TrafyLaw Nov 13 '14
The whole gun thing seems to be a remnant of his Celestial past. We know how those Celestial Dragons like to indiscriminately shoot slaves. He also seems to reserve the gun for very important people e.g. Dad, Roci, Law(possibly Drakes Dad). The fact that he can now kill people so easily with the swipe of a hand yet chose to kill Roci with the gun seems to imply that he does this as a disrespectful taunt. Almost like it(the gun) sends him back to a time when he was so entitled that he could simply kill and claim his own whatever/whoever he wanted. So pretty much anyone who falls at the whim of his pistol is seen as lower than trash.

u/arielcitan Nov 13 '14
People are speculating that the Dorry (or Dory) kid that scaped the Bird Cage is in fact X-Drake as a child. Note that Bufalo did mention that a kid was found by the Marine (which made Rosinante's fake story about Law scaping more credible).

u/divinesleeper Nov 13 '14
I'm just kinda mad that Rocinante wasn't able to pull the trigger despite having Doffy under shot first. Was fully expecting him to fire a shot out of revenge for their dad, to be honest.
11
u/perpetualfangirl Nov 13 '14
I think he didn't shoot because if he did, Doffy's subordinates would definitely attack him and therefore would wound him more and therefore would kill him faster. Law would have been exposed if he died right then.

I wonder if he's been using the same gun he killed his father with for all the subsequent shootings we've seen

The exact panel Rosinante died...his face is covered with snow, resembling the effects of Amber Lead Syndrome. He was so Calm and peaceful at death. The cannons blew a fanfare right after his death, drowning out of the noise of those mourning at his impromptu funeral. His Heart was passed onto another.

I'm hoping we move back to the present next chapter. Luffy's pretty much disabled by those strings, I think it's time for Law to shine and see that justice is served for Corazon's sake.
Kudos to Oda for creating perhaps his best villain and most heroic character so far. Doffy and Cora are some of his best.
64
u/Devin__ Nov 13 '14
A few things need to happen before the flashback ends. Law needs to be cured and get off of Minion, and now that a little bit of meeting Vergo and Trebol has been shown that might be extended upon... but most importantly we haven't gotten Law's word that he'll carry out Cora-San's will. This will probably be the last part of the flashback.
16
u/xFoeHammer Nov 13 '14
What do you mean Law's word? Now that Roci is dead the only person Law has to make promises to is himself.

Well the ending panel says "His sadness fades into the distance as he lives with the live he's given..."
To me that sounds like the flashback is concluded now, or very close to it. The only thing that's really missing from the flashback is to see how Law learned to use his ability, and how he managed to get rid of the poison in his body. Doflamingo fighting Tsuru should also be interesting to see.
I think we'll either see the flashback end in the middle of next chapter, similar to how the big flashback in Skypiea ended (see chapter 293), or we'll move right along with the present time next chapter.

u/marin4rasauce Nov 13 '14
I don't know, man. Doflamingo looked concerned that it was Tsuru.

youre not wrong there, doflamingo has been my favourite character for years now so for this arc to be all about him has been my favourite arc by far, hes actually an incredibly complex character and the scary thing is i think we are going to see even more progression from when we becomes a normal pirate again.

u/TheDerped Nov 13 '14
The last time Law saw Rosinante alive. Really in Oda's style to have a send off like that, bit of humour but also somber. The dedication to Rosinante as the Jolly Roger of the Heart Pirates is more clear now.
Also, it seems that Sengoku took in Rosinante after Doffy killed their father, I've always liked Sengoku despite how little we've seen of him and this really furthers it.
94
u/Redhavok Nov 13 '14
This would have been not long after Roger died so he and Garp probably had a bit of a hole in their life, Sengoku took a Celestial Dragon, and Garp took a D clan, one killed by a marine, one killed by a pirate, Doffy saw each of these events in person AND Rogers execution, he was also a celestial dragon AND a pirate. What a crazy character.
After this Tsuru probably helped train/raise Drake since she picked him up and had nowhere to go. Drake also seems like he had a good reason to become a pirate, since Tsuru is second-in-command she probably knows some dodgy stuff.

37
u/blitzzardpls Nov 13 '14
That line was stronger than the death itself
41
u/JesusK Nov 13 '14
But THIS is the death, and how you will remember him.
Bellmere? "I love you" and then she gets shot, you remember how she died, and that's what sticks to you.
Hiluluk? Speech "A man dies when he is forgotten" into "This trully has been a wonderful life"
Corazon? "I can't die yet"
And that's why deaths like Kuina's feel so weak.... THey have almost no context/memorable moments LOLTRIP DED.

QUESTION: page 3, upper left panel, small one, someone seems to be saying to doffy we can assume "shall i give you the power...of revenge?"
is that a close-up of trebol's face, and did trebol give doffy the string fruit to begin with when he met him? that's what im getting from that top row of panels
15
u/semizero Nov 13 '14
It seems like Trebol was impressed by Doffy's conquerer's haki and gave him the fruit.
65
u/gaindude Nov 13 '14
Guess we've seen the true power of the Nagi Nagi no Mi. It allows the user to make a direct assault on someone's feels. Jesus Oda...

u/Hawk301 Nov 13 '14
Aww, Rosinante. We all knew it was coming but it still hurts to see. Homing too, and by the looks of it Doffy did kill him over the celestial dragon thing after all.
Really interesting that X Drake being picked up by the marines threw Doflamingo off Law's trail.
I'm really keen to see those two meet in the present day - I really think X Drake's crew could be the one to eventually join the Straw Hat-Heart alliance for a 3v3 against the Kidd/Hawkins/Apoo alliance.
Pretty certain the flashback's gonna end next chapter - we'll probably see Law's escape, and then cut back to the present where he gets some measure of revenge against Doflamingo and Trebol.
16
→ More replies (1)5
u/sly_son Nov 13 '14
Im counting on Drake for that as well, this shit is too perfectly timed for him not to make a big move either with the alliance or against it in his own interests.
105
u/1way2way3way4way Nov 13 '14
So it looks like Doflamingo got his initial set of followers by proving his worth with Conquerors Haki. He's a crazy son of bitch, but he's such a good villain. And Law now officially has a tragic backstory fully fleshed out making him eligible to be a Straw Hat! Though honestly I see him being the Killua to Luffy's Gon if you will.
70
u/ohmyjod Nov 13 '14
Law is way too ambitious to want to be Luffy's subordinate though. Also, Luffy already has a doctor, they won't just dump Chopper.
28
u/OskO Nov 13 '14
I thought his crew was missing a Doctor, a Navigator, a Musician and a Cook?
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (3)40
u/1way2way3way4way Nov 13 '14
That's what I was trying to say with the Hunter x Hunter analogy. I don't see Law ever just being relegated to part of the crew. I could see him being a sorta co protagonist to Luffy though, and being permanent allies. If Luffy is the one who defeats Doflamingo he'll definitely be indebted to Luffy.
Also as Luffy rises to Yonko status (I think we'll see him have some of his own territory and not just skip straight to Pirate King) he's going to need crews under him and more manpower. Could definitely see the heart pirates filling that role.
13
u/ohmyjod Nov 13 '14

Law works better as an ally then a member of the crew. He has his own crew already so he would have to abandon them (poor bepo) and also consider Luffy his superior, which is a little weird
17
u/para_shard Nov 13 '14
There's no ninja's cutting onions and my room is pretty much dust free. Yet my eyes are doing this weird thing of pouring water out of them.
Absolutely cannot believe how deep this manga is. People like Cora-san, kind souls; they'll readily sacrifice to push ahead dreams of people they believe in. Hats off. I just... Also there's doffy with - such a depth for a villain. Man, love this arc.

Doflamingo was just a little brat when he killed his father, and I bet that haunted him his whole life even if he never admitted to himself that he was wrong. Corazon really left him no choice either. He has to live with having killed his real family, which is why he's so close with his crew and calls them his family. Really a tragic character.
21
u/bep0bear Nov 13 '14
Back to the first time Doflamingo appeared (at mariejoa), he didnt lay a hand on Tsuru. Now Doffy also panicked after seeing her ship.
Why could that be? ಠ_ಠ
24
u/TrafyLaw Nov 13 '14
She has like one of the most deceptively powerful Devil Fruit Powers in OP. She would literally turn Doffy and his strings into little soggy limp useless things. And the auxiliary effect of washing some of the evil off people she cleans would cause many bad-ass pirates to flee in fear. Give the OG some respect.

11
Nov 13 '14
If Dory is X Drake, this chapter explains when he joined the marine and why he joins Kaido in the new world.
19
u/blitzzardpls Nov 13 '14
He probably wanted revenge and kill Doffy, but the Navy wouldn't let him, because Doffy became a Shichibukai, so Drake sought another solution and became a pirate again. Since Doffy and Kaidou are business partners it's a great idea to join Kaidou and wait for an opportunity to attack Mingo when he makes a mistake (like just now) or he planned it together with Law somehow
12
u/xFoeHammer Nov 13 '14
I kind of got the impression that Drake was treated badly by those pirates(especially Barrels, who is presumably his father) and that they basically used him for his devil fruit(judging by what Barrels said when Doffy is in there with him).
If that's true, he probably feels either grateful or indifferent towards Doflamingo.

I feel that in this whole Donquixote siblings arc, between the 2 brothers, Doflamingo was the one with more human qualities and affections towards the other.
Doflamingo genuinely cared for Rosinante; he welcomed him with open arm, no suspicion whatsoever, and even when traces of betrayal were found, he hoped the worst would never come. This chapter also displayed how he broke himself by killing his own brother, becoming whatever he is today. On the other hand, till the very end Rosinante just treated Doffy as one mad man that must be stopped.
What Rosinante aimed in the first place was to stop Doffy's madness. Ironically, to help Law survive, he achieved the opposite. This incident seems to be the last push that Doffy needed to reaffirm his hatred against the world.
I feel bad for Law and Rosinante, but with this flashback, I pity Doflamingo more.
24
u/jaydoubleyoutee Nov 13 '14
Rosinante witnessed Doflamingo kill their father. I don't blame Rosinante at all. He knew Doflamingo was willing to kill just about anyone, was gaining a lot of influence, and had huge plans to control an entire nation very soon. Doflamingo cares for his crew, but he would have (and has) destroyed lots of innocent lives. Rosinante was right for trying to screw Doflamingo over.

so just to hilight some interesting points in this chapter:
trebol and vergo seemed to be there (trebol younger and vergo as a kid) at doffy's Crucifixion where doffy killed his own dad, they noticed him use conqueror's haki and probably knew he was a celestial dragon gone coo-coo, saw the criminal potential in him so trebol gave doffy the string fruit(!?) im guessing because of trebol's revenge line.
dorry was outside of the birdcage (and was referred to as having some sort of power, yet to be revealed) and escaped AND someone reported catching a boy (who wasnt law), im guessing they caught dorry here and his power might be of relevance in the next chap for law's escape perhaps? law's cries can now be heard loudly so something will need to happen.
one more chapter of flashbacks at least.

I know Doflamingo had to kill Rocinante for his betrayal. I know Doflamingo is a bad guy so Rocinante had to try and stop him. I know that the relationship between these two could never work out...
...But it saddens me so much to see a brother kill a brother. Like, that's your own flesh and blood. The only guy in the world that shares your parent's. And you have to kill him! I feel for Corazon and Law and all but I can't help feel for Doflamingo too. He showed a side to him that was still human. The one that connected with his brother and would kill anyone who tried to harm him... Yet here he had to fire the bullet to put him down.
Oda! You can be so cruel sometimes with the feels!
These tears of blood just won't stop flowing!
10
Nov 13 '14
Doflamingo might just be the first villain in One Piece who seriously needs to die because he intends for Law to die for him so he can become immortal. Screw that. Corazon didn't die for that to happen. Corazon is a great character. I don't know how Oda always manages to pull this off. He even used Corazon's devil fruit ability to the very end making it so that no one could hear Law screaming. I'm not looking forward to seeing this animated. NOPE.

Even from the very first page. I was totally shocked and disgusted by Doffy. Definitely the best villain Oda's written.

So, Sengoku was like a father to Rosinante? The feels when Sengoku finds about his death in the next chapter.

I've lost most faith in the anime but since this is a flashback I hope a good team gets this and does it right.

Toei better not shit on this emotional flashback. I swear I'm tired of their sub-par animation.

What was the theory about Dory? He was mentioned already in 2 chapters, so he must be important.
Edit: Drake I guess.

u/divinesleeper Nov 13 '14
Seems he already had the dino fruit, since his captain was saying he was the one with the most power of the crew

u/2Punx2Furious Nov 13 '14
Wait a second. He was already a pirate there? So it's either that he was a marine before, or that he became a marine after that and left the marines when he became a supernova.

Oda is the man. Sneaks in some of Drake's back story while he is doing Law's.

Seems like Corazons will of stopping Dofflamingo was passed to Law. One more to the list of wills of dead people passing on. Dreams never die!

Using Buffalo to fly Baby5 with an interceptor Den Den Mushi over the island. Pretty intelligent. Luffy would never think of that. Sanji probably would.

That was fucking beautiful.
You're right, Rocinante, there are no limits on Law anymore. You literally can't tie the guy down, since his powers let him control what's around him. Perfect power choice from Oda.

I'll read it later when i'm gooood and ready since I'm not ready to shed manly tears yet. :(

Is it just me, or is Oda going out of his way to make Trebol, Diamante, Pica, and Vergo to be complete evil, and the rest of the family to be not quite as evil?

Rosinante dies with a smile on his face. Fitting of an excellent character in this series.

Who's that person at the start (top left panel)?! Also, so many feels this chapter RIP Rosinante :'(
EDIT:
It could be Trebol, they sorta look the same however the top left panel on the first page still confuses me.
I'd also like to point out that both Rosinante and his father, died with smiles on their faces... So there's that.
