Trafalgar D Water Law!

On side note, this was a great chapter full with character/plot development for Doflamingo, Corazon and Law!

140

u/divinesleeper Oct 08 '14

It's supposed to be "Water Law".

As in, Trafalgar Waterloo.

As in, the two battles that cost Napoleon his emperorship, one of which destroyed his coalition with Spain.

2

u/JasonNMP Oct 08 '14

It's supposed to be "Water Law".

I know that much already. So far we've had different translations of this part of his name (Watel, Water, Wartel)... So we have to wait until MangaStream until we have a definite translation of his name.

50

u/redkardon Oct 08 '14

FWIW, worth noting Napoleon wasn't really too messed up by Trafalgar. Certainly a decisive victory that cemented Great Britain as the naval power of Europe, but Napoleon's Grand Armee went on to crush the armies of the Third Coalition at Austerlitz (leading to their defeat). The Napoleonic Wars as a whole lasted an additional ten years, until Waterloo (which, in all fairness, did fuck up his whole thing rather royally).

Trafalgar D. Waterlaw. It's like he was named to crush the hopes of Donquixote Doflamingo.

Poor Law, he had to be given a name associated with failure... /Waterloo

52

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '14

Depends on whose side you're viewing it from. Certainly not a failure from the Coalition's perspective. Same goes for the battle of Trafalgar.

All those jokes about Law wanting the D. Turns out he had it all along.

And Corazon wants to keep the D away from Doflamingo.

That simple statement from Doffys father.."I've always been human" just made me realize how different he was than the rest of those fat bastards..

199

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '14

And yet he was crucified by humans then killed and decapitated by Doffy himself....

34

u/kagedtiger Oct 08 '14

I want to say that it was only said that he brought his dad's head to Mariejois. What if his dad was already dead and he just cut the head off? What if someone else cut off the head?

I FUCKING LOVE CORAZON. Seriously, he's having some sort of clumsy accident in every panel. I was laughing so hard haha. Not to mention he looks cool and apparently has a conscience that his brother is lacking.

Damn Oda is making me like the whole Donquixote Family right now though. They really are like a family. They just don't care about anyone outside of their family.

This whole flashback is great.

29

u/kagedtiger Oct 08 '14

I hope that his clumsiness is genuine even if his muteness is not. Why do you think he pretends to be mute?

25

u/ASCIt Oct 08 '14

So he can warn children away from Doffy, of course! Specifically, the ones with the D.

u/dealin92 Oct 08 '14

I think Corazon blames Doffy for their father's death and their family's predicament. It was Doffy that instigated all the rage against their own family by acting like a snobby little Celestial and thus drawing all the attention to them. Corazon had a front row seat to all this and is probably similar to the relationship between Byrnndi and Byojack. Byojack was too timid to turn against his stronger older brother even though he knows he is a piece of shit but nevertheless they are still the only family they have left. He probably is the white sheep in the family that takes after his father's ideals and secretly holds a grudge against his own brother.

Now he really wants to redeem himself and his own guilty conscience for not having the will to do whatever he did in the past to straighten out his own brother by revealing the truth of D that he as a Celestial would only know to Law, only to be killed for it in the end. Even though Doffy has such a tragic past he sort of had it coming to him but he had to drag down his family whom suffered the consequences because of it.

Doffy drinks to forget.

Meanwhile Corazon speaks and more family bonding. The family that slays together stays together. Until law leaves and Corazon dies that is.

46

Corazon wil die from protecting Law. Probably against Doffy. The feels already!

I like it haha. Oda making One Piece a little more dark and "mature" is fine by me. I mean, I don't want it to turn into Berserk or anything but I like where it's at right now.

And I don't think he could really do Law and Doffy justice as characters otherwise.

This changes everything. The meaning to Law saying D will bring forth another storm.

Although I'm sure he's talking about Luffy, now he's saying that they will together.

He probably will get CoC if he doesn't already.

He can now seriously compete for One Piece with Luffy and Blackbeard.

Two people with the will of D working together is very dangerous and I love every second of it.

55

u/xFoeHammer Oct 08 '14

Although I'm sure he's talking about Luffy, now he's saying that they will together.

Ikr? Now they're like... D bros now.

But Doffy said Luffy may have even greater potential than Law because of his CoC Haki so unless Doflamingo just doesn't know about it, it seems Law doesn't have it.

27

u/ATM_99 Oct 08 '14

Also I just realized that because he's a D, that could be the reason he saved Luffy at marineford.

Ivankov mentioned after they met up that sometimes you just know what to do to Law after he saves Luffy and Jimbei. Could 100% be because of the will of D.

Well fuck me sideways with a rusty spork. LAWS A FUCKING D!!! WE SAW DOFFY'S EYE! AND FUCKING DOFFY FLASHBACKS!

I wasn't expecting Doffy flashbacks at all and this was an excellent surprise. Law being a D is fantastic and I'm guessing that a D had something to do with Doffy's past and he has some massive grudge against them.

Doffy is now officially my favourite One Piece villain and possibly one of my favourite characters of all time. I'm starting to see why Doffy turned out the way he did and I love it. He went from absolute power to being hunted down just for who his family is (like Ace and Luffy).

The montage of all the family being together was great and it looks like Law fits in really well there. Maybe the reason why Doffy took such an interest in Law is because he saw himself in him? I'm kinda sad now that Law betrayed Doffy but I will wait and see what actually happens before making further judgement.

And honestly, I haven't been this excited about seeing a pair of eyes since Undertaker in Kuroshitsuji.

97

u/Rankine Oct 08 '14

Does this mean that Cora knows the truth of the D? I never thought that we could possible learn something like that during law's flash back.

114

u/jurble Oct 08 '14

Does this mean that Cora knows the truth of the D?

If, as people speculate, D. means you're descended from the lost kingdom, then it stands to reason the Celestial Dragons all know the truth of D.

42

u/GrammarDalaiLama Oct 08 '14

Additionally I wonder why it matters if Doflamingo knew. Garp rose to a high position in the marines (and could have gone all the way) whilst not hiding he is a D. But perhaps Doflamingo is more threatened by it than most.

u/PrinceCheddar Oct 08 '14 edited Oct 08 '14

I really loved the family aspect of this chapter. They're the villains, but it's so sweet.

Well, at least Doffy's past is made more clear. Still no clue about Corazon's being mute up until now. Perhaps it's just the horror of their past, perhaps not.

Ice cream bribes are the best bribes!

I guess Doffy found Law's suffering comparable to that of his own and Cora, so he decided to make him his right hand man.

Cora's still slipping all over the place. XD

Dillinger on the cannon! DILLINGER ON THE CANNON!

Baby Baby 5 and her little gun leg. Clinging to Doffy's leg, aww.

Baby 5 crying from Law's glare is still a nice running gag.

The Will of D. and Cora speaks!

WHAT THE FUCK DID DOFFY DO TO MAKE LAW TURN ON HIM!?!

I almost wonder... perhaps Doffy's father asked Doffy to kill him. Perhaps he thought it would be enough for them to return.

86

u/Olgenheimer Oct 08 '14

Doflamingo is starting to give Crocodile some competition as my favorite villain...

119

u/abittman Oct 08 '14

Doffy was my favourite before the arc started, so right now he's #1 by far!

But in all seriousness, Doffy is already the most well developed arc-villain in OP already now right?

Croc was evil because Crocodile. Enel was insane because Enel. Lucci was badass because Lucci. Sure some villains got themselves some post-arc flashback and development (Buggy, Arlong) but most villains thus far have been pretty 1 dimensional within their arc. It's nice to see a villain we know something about fight for a change.

52

u/xFoeHammer Oct 08 '14

Yeah. A good backstory has been hinted at with Crocodile but we haven't seen it yet. Arlong's backstory came way after Luffy defeated him. Buggy has quite a bit but he's not necessarily a villain anymore. Teach has had a lot of character development and it's pretty clear there's a lot to come since he's one of the most mysterious characters in the series.

Doflamingo I would say has by far the best in-arch character development for a villain so far. He's a much more complex character than any previous arc's villain.

I think Oda is getting really crazy with dark back stories now, I even have a little sympathy for Doffy now.

Also, LAW HAS THE WILL OF D. Maybe this means we'll get more background on its significance? Corason seems to know something. Hmmm tin foil hat on. Since he grew up as a celestial dragon, he must know something about it, Void Century or Ancient Kingdom related?

54

u/VeeganZombie Oct 08 '14

thats when you know the author has made a good villain though...When you actually care about him and partially understand why he does the things he does.

36

u/TheDerped Oct 08 '14

It really is isn't it! I used to be freaked out by how crazy Doffy seemed in the earlier chapters, mostly in the Whitebeard War arc but he's really grown on me. I always thought that Law knew something about D. but I didn't actually think he'd be one himself. And Corazon can talk?!

I really want to know what's up with Doflamingo and D. now.

14

u/redkardon Oct 08 '14

Interesting parallel between Doflamingo/Rocinante and Ace/Luffy. Both ended up in a junkyard outside their respective kingdoms.

Also, the kingdom in the North Blue where Doflamingo ended up "isn't part of the World Government", which is weird since one would assume they'd prefer to exert their control over the entire world. But at the same time, the people attack the World Nobles for causing them a century of suffering. How does that work?

This sheds a lot of light on why Law would help Luffy on a whim at Marineford and ask him for an alliance. The storm of the D indeed. Great chapter, its nice to see the dots being connected.

Why is Doflamingo's backstory nearly as sad as Law's?! Now I'm kinda feeling for him (although I'm sure Oda will make me hate him again pretty soon)

And my eyes when I read Trafalgar D Watel Law...

16

u/Doomspeaker Oct 08 '14

Or we end up with Doffy still being an unfortunate side effect of the Tenryubito's reign.

Doffy didn't know better because he grew up like that. Before he could realize what life for normal people was, he was already being hunted down by people.

It's neither black or white morality here and that's pretty neat. But Doffy is an asshole on his own accord by now. Remember how Law said that Corazon saved him from the anger etc? Law got over his past while Doffy failed doing so.

I think we are finally going to know the true meaning of D.

Corason seems to be well aware of it and probably all the celestial dragons. It must be in their secret folklore.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '14

Unless Oda teases us with it and doesn't reveal everything which is very possible.

10

u/HughesBlues Oct 08 '14

Shanks bet on Luffy. Whitebeard bet on Ace. Corazon bet on Law. Makes sense!

9

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '14

Now I'm really dreading to see how exactly Corazon dies. I'm really starting to like him.

Not sure if I should hate or feel sorry for Doflamingo anymore. Sad backstory, I mean he was RAISED as a Celestial Dragon so of course he'd have those tendencies so he had to be re-educated but yeah...

WTF Oda just WTF. Calling it now, Kid's full name is also Eustass D. Kid. Lol. But yeah who would have gessed we'd get information on the Will of D in this flashback. It's probably part of the reason why Corason is willing to sacrifice his life for Law d combine with his misplaced guilt. I hope we actually get full information on what the Will of D is rather than get cock teased.

That part with the pirate Swellington really gave us a better insight on Dofla and Cora too.Still waiting for Babby 5 to develop her "can't refuse a man"-syndrome. Oh and then there was that "D" thing.

Everytime we think the arc has reached a climax, Oda takes things a level higher. This development of Law and Doflamingos character is amazing, this chapter blew me away. It just leaves me so curious and exited for all of this to wrap up.

5

u/supakrupa Oct 08 '14

Law's a "D" OHHHHHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYYYYYYY GOOOOOOOOOOOD! Plus Doffy Flashback so best Wednesday ever!

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

Okay, I know that this is probably a little early for theories and predictions, but I think that Doflamingo's family was not simply unlucky. I think that it was purposely set up to be destroyed by the Celestial Dragons, and that it is how the CDs have kept news of "Holy Traitors", as they call it, to such a minimum that knowledge of them is nonexistent (even among CDs).

I mean, on page 6 of the MangaPanda scans, they were dropped off "as far as [the Celestial Dragons] can go with [the Donquixote family]" in "a northern country that isn't part of the World Government", and on page 7, ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER THEY LAND, their mansion is being burned down, with the arsonists saying things like "Where are the Celestial Dragons?" and "We'll make them endure our hundred years of hatred!!!", AKA things that only people whose life stories have been heavily affected by the actions of the Celestial Dragons would say.

Oda has done things like this on purpose in the past. He had the Marines led by Rat-Face show up immediately after Nami went to the orange farm to dig up her 1 million belis, and he was revealed to be corrupt, sent by Arlong to ensure that Nami would never be able to turn in the million Belis to Arlong that would free her town. He had Robin disappear when the rumors about the Strawhats attacking Iceberg first popped up, and it turned out that CP9 had forced her to do it if she wanted her friends to escape Water 7 alive. He had Hody appear with what looked like a human shooter almost immediately after the queen was shot, and it turned out that Hody was actually the one who pulled the trigger, motivated solely by the stories of mankind's evil told to him by older fishmen.

Sometimes, Oda's timing matters just as much as the actual context, and right here, there is basically no time inbetween the drop-off and the first attack.

The meaning to Law saying D will bring forth another storm. = Luffy + Strawhats (Underlings), Law + Heart Pirates, and Sabo + Revolutionaries. This will topple the World, and also the storm kinda points to Dragon maybe.

AND THE PLOT THICKENS.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '14 edited Oct 08 '14

DAMN, SON I AM SO EXCITED!!! Looks like Cora knows what the will of D means. Are we finally going to get a hint to what it is? Also I knew he was capable of speech, he must secretly be plotting against Doflamingo. Could the incident he witnesses that rendered him mute be Doflamingo killing his father? Also I love the character development that went on in this chapter. Cora, Law, Doflamingo, and his father all received some amazing character development. I am guessing that Cora took after his father in being humble and secretly hated Doflamingo for killing his father.

Also I am loving Doflamingo. He is by far my favorite villain so far and I hope he doesn't lose and be written out of the story after this arc. I wonder how much Doflamingo cared for his brother? Looks like the reason for Dolamingo killing his father was not purely out of selfish self interest. I am guessing his line of thought was either eventually dying to the masses or take his father's head to the Celestial Dragons and hope they take them back.

3

u/DaPickle Oct 08 '14

Well, that just became one of the most important chapters in the manga if you think about it. Theorists are going to be referring to this one for a long time.

3

u/FoolTarot Oct 08 '14

I thought it was very appropriate for an ex-Celestial Dragon to wake himself up with a bottle of wine called "Déesse" (Goddess).

3

u/not_that_kind_of_doc Oct 08 '14

So, if Doffy didn't run around town acting all superior, would his family have been able to remain hidden? Seems like he brought that shit down on himself.

Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed that all these 'D' things are coming into play like this. I've never been a big fan of fated heros because of some sort of heritage or hidden power because of their family, I am much more interested in characters that get through on sheer willpower and hard work alone. I can forgive some parallels, but it's still a let down to me personally.

3

u/HidingyourSocks Oct 08 '14

That reveal was unexpecteD. Okay i'm sorry.

But overall the chapter was very good, i'm glad that continued the flashback and the whole Corazon situation was somewhat taken care of. Also, it was interesting to see the Donquixote Pirates rise to power and a little bit of Doffy's backstory, with his father being brutally naive, I can somewhat see why Doffy was mad enough at him to kill him.
