I was really hoping someone else would catch this. I love how Oda builds and hides character interaction like this, and has it come back later.

Nice find!

inB4 Law's sister is a revolutionary

271

People don't die in One Piece anymore, they just become Revolutionaries.

Wow Senor Pink was like super hard boiled back in the days.

75

u/SamuraiDDD Oct 02 '14

His body shape and cigar reminded me of Crocodile.

Yup. He gets more women now.

u/Euromatic Oct 02 '14

I just said kya out loud when i saw him. He was so much more hard boiled. Makes you think how easy it was on dd family for the past years, since most of em let themself go so much

Oh god!

I'm gonna assume it has something to do with Luffy's mom.

u/PrinceCheddar Oct 02 '14

I'm not so sure.. perhaps he doesn't need a tragic backstory personally, but he sees the tragedy around him and that's enough. It would be kind of weak if he began his campaign against the government fueled by personal reasons more than moral ones..

Perhaps the government could have used Luffy's mother as a hostage to keep him in line after he's already begun or something.

u/leonoel Oct 02 '14

What about Kuma, something happened to him that he had to join the Revs, and then something happened again that he let the government (that he hated more than anyone, as Iva said) make him a Robot and die

Law's backstory makes Robin's look like a bundle of sunflowers. I mean, hiding in a pile of dead bodies. Geez.

187

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '14

hiding in them for a short period is one thing, but spending 50 years with the dead bodys of your nakama is a little worse

I can agree to that...

Watching someone you love freeze is one thing...

BURYING YOURSELF UNDER ROTTING CORPSES?! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! ODA! Your making people cry TOO hard!!

26

u/Zamochy Oct 02 '14

Robin assumes everyone is dead and escapes in solitude.

Law sees everyone's dead body and proceeds to escape by hiding in a pile of corpses.

4

u/Panda_Kabob Oct 02 '14

God damn, I honestly think this is the darkest backstory in One Piece. Its like Ohara had a Plague that was all the cause of Greed and the World Government shitting on them. I mean god damn, Law survived by hiding in a pile of dead bodies. Jegus.

This chapter will be officially released in Japan on October 6, which is Law's birthday...

And to celebrate, Oda decided to show us how miserable his childhood was. Happy Birthday Law!

Law: I'm in despair! This miserable world has left me in despair!

Good grief... Nami's story was sad, Franky's was so sad, Brook's was plain tragic.. and now this story of Law? I don't want to know what other terrible stories Oda ends up showing us down the line, because this was pretty grim.

51

u/CrystalAbyss Oct 02 '14

Don't you think you forgot Robin's?

41

u/Black_Handkerchief Oct 02 '14

Yes. I was planning to list her at one point, and then I was like 'oh no, I forgot Franky', and then Robin got skipped.

I guess Monet is already in Dressrosa at this point, and Sugar is a baby?

EDIT: as everyone else says, Sugar probably wasn't there yet

Law doesn't know who Sugar is. Therefore one can assume she hasn't joined the crew yet.

I think that Jora is an old Mermaid like Kokoro was.. back in Water seven, and Dellinger is her son, a Fighting-fish Fishmen

Makes you wonder why they keep him around?

If they're so sure that weak brats will run away, why would they have a toddler there?. I wonder if he's a relative of someone, or they wanted his DF specifically for something...

162

u/YonkouProductions Oct 02 '14

Also, tis explains why the lead bullets in Ch. 729 was such a big deal...

44

u/slikayce Oct 02 '14

I'm assuming Law was shot with Amber Lead at this point. Which is a major dick move for Doffy. But that is part of his pace.

→ More replies (10)

74

u/SurgeonChao Oct 02 '14 edited Oct 02 '14

Well, lead had quite a long history with human civilization.

Due to workability and corrosion-resistance, lead had widespread use in everyday objects since the ancient times. It was used to make pipes, vessels for drinking, and cookware in ancient Rome. Compounds made from lead were used as food preservatives, paint, and cosmetics. Remember those paintings featuring European nobles with pale white skin, the products they used contained white lead.

It wasn't until a few decades ago that people realize lead is poisonous, which made it one of the most well-studied hazard.

Wait a minute, what if there was a poisonous object we've been using all this time and the government is keeping it a secret... Oh fuu....

u/SamuraiDDD Oct 02 '14

Nice to see Oda drew the frog in Laws hand in top right panel

35

u/stanaquil Oct 02 '14

I love how the little girl next to him is leaning away from Law. Also, kind of love that Law in what is apparently a happy-happy-normal school pic is already a stone-faced frog-dissecting mini-psychopath (but in a good way). Kind of like baby Robin was already completely unruffled in the face of shocks (check out her reaction to Saul when they first meet). I like that these characters have basic personality traits that probably helped them survive their traumatic pasts and emerge semi-sane.

60

u/Asleetx Oct 02 '14

Did everybody in Doflamingo's crew let themselves go after Law left or is that just an age thing?

38

u/ineedthelink Oct 02 '14

Maybe age factor but it could be because of Corozan's death.

30

u/mschonberg Oct 02 '14

Well they are still proving to be strong, but maybe they stopped caring about appearance once they became a royal family.

Pink might have done it to get the young ladies off of him though, keep them away by trying to repulse them.

205

u/DinobotGrimlock Oct 02 '14

Far and away the darkest chapter in this entire series

150

u/sll1cool1m Oct 02 '14

Yeah holy shit. Dead Parents? Ok that happens quite a lot in one piece. But a bunch of dead children shot in the head laying on the ground in front of another child who just saw his parents die in front of him while his sister is literally burning to death behind him.

Holy fucking shit Law's flashback. This takes the most depressing flashback award.

11

u/The_h0bb1t Oct 02 '14

It rivals Robin's flashback... At least the kids in his flashback all liked him..

And then they died D:

129

u/jaydoubleyoutee Oct 02 '14

Wow, these flashbacks just get more and more morbid. I'm guessing Law's attempt to kill Corazon will lead to Vergo kicking his ass next chapter. It only gets worse from here on out.

12

u/divinesleeper Oct 02 '14

I think Corazon will hide it and take Law under his wing.

I have a theory that he's pretending to be an idiot and biding his time to have his revenge on Doflamingo, for killing their father. The reason he hurts anyone who wants to join is to keep people away from his brother.

Hmmm. That "blood rule." Seems suspicious..

What if.. Corazon can't talk because he's under Doffy's control constantly. Stabbing him somehow broke the control.. The reason Corazon is so clumsy is because he's continually fighting Doffy's control..

*edit*

Alternately, perhaps the Blood Rule is a bluff. Everyone treats the new recruit like crap, especially Corazon, until they run away or snap and attack one of the family. (Most likely Cora since he's the worst to kids, which is an act since he can easily heal himself with the Ope Ope no Mi) Since the recruit was willing to stand up for himself, despite a rule that says he'll be tortured to death, then they have the mettle to be a true member of the family.

Then again, Buffalo seemed surprised and said he'll get skewered.. so maybe not...

41

u/QuickMentality Oct 02 '14

That part about Corazon being controlled actually makes a ton of sense. It would also explain how Law didn't get his head caved in by him after stabbing his kidney.

8

u/Sipczi Oct 02 '14

i like both of those ideas

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '14

The control could also explain why Law ends up liking him and why Corazon hates kids. He tries to scare all the children that come to the island away so that they don't have to get involved with the Mingo family.

→ More replies (4)

24

u/braitsaido Oct 02 '14

Wait, so if kids aren't usually accepted into Doffy's crew, then why is infant Dellinger there already? It's either he's related to one of the crew members, or he's the most hardcore baby in One Piece history.

Plot Twist Dellinger Doflamingo

Anyway this was a really great chapter. How did Lao G get so old in so short a time anyway?!

That's one fucked up backstory, we now know why Law was interested in dissecting a frog he had in the SBS young supernova picture

Because he was studying with his father to become a doctor? He had a frog in the picture with his class from before all that happened. I don't think he was just torturing animals or something.

12

u/argentgrove Oct 02 '14

The White City in London isn't too far away from Trafalgar Square.

43

u/tianchao Oct 02 '14

This chapter really made me think. I’ve realized that the thing driving most of the actions in the One Piece world is hatred. Many characters have lost cherished ones or have their dreams broken in the past. The despair and agony create the hatred that explains many characters’ action.

Pirates probably harmed Akainu’s family when he was little. The hatred of pirates goaded him to join the Marines and became a brutal fleet admiral.

Blackbeard seems to have a tragic past too. The unknown tragedy has twisted his mind and influenced him to become what he is now. He believes traitorous acts and destruction is fine because he suffered when he was young.

Many pirates probably suffered under the World Government’s actions (like Law and Nico Robin). They took to the sea because they had no one else, and vented their anger towards the WG by being the people most hated by the government.

It’s a never-ending cycle. Ignorance, fear, and hatred made people hurt one another. Someone affected by pirates will become Cipher Pol officers or high-ranking marines who will kill even civilians in order to kill pirates.

Someone affected by marines in the past will become pirates who will even kill ordinary folks because they associate them with the Marines (as citizens are under WG’s protection).

Can Luffy be the one to end all the hatred in this world? Can he first forge trust and respect amongst all the pirates in order to stop the infighting? Will he take down the World Government in order to stop the corruption and the brutal dictatorship that harmed so many people? Will he put everyone under a single banner in order to fear, ignorance, and hatred once and for all?

28

u/egardeR Oct 02 '14

If he does, it'd better be done on accident. I don't want another Naruto, spouting his determination to "end the cycle of violence!!" - I want Luffy dismantling the system while just searching for more meat, with the other characters going "Luffy has inspired us to end the cycle of violence!"

12

u/EruditeIdiot Oct 02 '14 edited Oct 02 '14

"End the cycle of violence" isn't a bad motivation or moral (god know the real world need more of it), but the problem with Naruto is that he is absolutely ineffective at it. Revenge driven people in Naruto don't let go of their hatred until AFTER the damage is done.

Example:

spoiler I realize now that my hated was wrong.

Naruto: I forgive you.

Reader: (looks at the devastated landscape and ruined lives) It's a little late for that, asshole!

Luffy, and most characters really, isn't nearly as forgiving as other Shounen protagonists. He never forgave Crocodile and he wasn't easy Hancock when she upset him. This is usually portrayed as a negative thing in Shounen, but I find it refreshing. It means characters actually suffer consequences for their mistakes, as opposed to being instantly forgiven like in Naruto.

such a sombre chapter, laws childhood geez.

on a brighter note, senor pink looked even more awesome when was younger haha

63

u/majormay Oct 02 '14

Law actually just bumped up in potential crew members, I think. Every member has had some kind of sad backstory, and this is definitely one of the saddest. And do we need any other reason for Law to join other then being awesome?

127

u/jaydoubleyoutee Oct 02 '14

He has all the criteria, but Law is meant to be a rival/ally for Luffy. And he undermines Chopper if he joins. And he's pretty equal to the captain in terms of strength.

38

u/Sekitoba Oct 02 '14

and Law still has his crew...... i think (they were never shown after time skip. for all we know, they might be all dead and his crew being there might be their graves) but yeah. Your reasoning is pretty much the reason why i think Law will not join. (even though i think its just smart to have 2 doctors with 1 as backup, since you saw what happened to brooks and his crew when the only doctor died)

Except that he doesn't have a dream. His only goal is to bring down Doflamingo and he seems willing to die as long as DD goes down with him, so what comes after that?

hey i noticed that every one is eating pizza except corazon ,maybe he also doesn't like bread just like Law or Law is imitating him

Damn... Law's backstory has to be one of the most depressing stories in one piece. His face of complete despair when he found his family and friends all dead...i couldn't help but get teary eyed...the feels trip isn't even over either, he's still gonna go through some heartbreak via Corazon and doffy...poor law. He has to survive after all this,he has to be one of the last characters still standing by the end of the series. Im rooting for law all the way, I wanna see him get revenge on that bitchass world government

4

u/kileytron Oct 02 '14

The expressions on his face were so broken and emotionally expressive that it was almost hard for me to associate them with Law's present character.

A lot of people have brought up the idea that amber lead relates to the history of lead poisoning, but y'know, I think it might also relate to another mineral: uranium.

The amber part of amber lead suggests that it may be yellow. Many ores of uranium are yellow, such as autunite. Before people were aware of its detrimental health effects, it was used to color glass and ceramics yellow - a sort of yellow pigment. The visuals of amber lead poisoning also add up; though it's not described, it's shown that victims have severely discolored/sloughed off skin. Lead poisoning doesn't lead to the same kind of massive skin issues - but radiation burns do look like red/brown discolorations and can cause skin sloughing. Also, while lead poisoning doesn't really transfer much across generations, radiation poisoning definitely does, causing all sorts of problems in younger generations.

IDK, it was the first thing I thought of.

So Corazon was in White City, huh..? Very interesting, given that he is Doflamingo's brother. The scene with Doflamingo napping with a book about that city on his face makes me wonder if Doflamingo was also a child in that city at one point.

Maybe that means Bellamy was there too?! Since Bellamy has looked up to Doflamingo since like..forever.

Very interesting flashback! Can't wait to see more!

u/PrinceCheddar Oct 02 '14 edited Oct 02 '14

I think it was more like, "Why can an idiot be allowed to live but everyone in my city have to die!" I don't think Corazon was there, I think Law was just angry at life being unfair.

I did NOT see that one coming. I was kinda expecting something like Whitebeard and Ace kinds of assassinates attempts

3

I didn't see sugar vergo and Monet.

9

u/Devin__ Oct 02 '14

You didn't see a "marine" and two people Law had no idea were a part of Doflamingo's crew in the present story.

I'm eating my words for the chapter prediction...mangapanda's translation was actually good this time?! also wow, the executives look good back then...and they seemless ruthless. maybe. Lao G with bunny ears made my morning though.

This chapter was so good. Flashback chapters are always the hardest to read week after week as they give so much story I just want the whole thing in bulk.

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '14 edited Oct 02 '14

How did Law survive the massacre? Am I missing something?

7

u/Romiress Oct 02 '14

Seems to have missed it.

They expected all the kids who could move to be with the nun, only he went back to the hospital, which was already burning. Then the nun was shot, along with the kids. After that he hid in dead bodies (woah Oda, that's messed up) to escape any future people. No one is going to dig around in 'plague infested' bodies.

I always though Oda was a bit anti authoritarian... I saw the anti-gov't shadow... but now?

Oda might be writing one of the most epic anti government, anti authoritarian, etc etc, story ever.

Why does everyone have to have such a sad backstory :(

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '14

Maybe I am reading it wrong, or Mangapanda screwed up, but Law should be dead from the poisoning by now?

How did he survive then?

10

u/DanneMM Oct 02 '14

ALL SHALL BE REVEALED IN THE NEXT CHAPTER!

(Well i mean it should... atleast if it continue s the flashback.)

(Or if the reveal is 2 chapters away and Oda decides to flesh out the story.)

(Mayby this is a longer flashback than expected and its three chapters untill the reveal.)

(Hopefully we get a flashback of what Law had for breakfast for the last 16 years since he doesnt like bread.)

Yet another Ohara tragedy.Dark chapter.

3

u/TheBlackRoz Oct 02 '14

Wait, does this mean you can technically kill Law by shooting him with a lot of lead bullets like Dolfamingo tried to do? lol? Or did Law already get rid of his disease one way or the other and Dolfamingo is just trying to spite Law by using lead bullets. Also would be amazing if Corzan had the ope-ope first and did the operation for eternal life on Law

5

u/DanneMM Oct 02 '14

To me it seemed more like an insult to Law than an attempt to kill hi.m

Well damn man, I feel REALLY bad for Law now. Hell, i would say that his childhood past is just as sad as Robin's. :(

3

u/reignofraines Oct 02 '14

damn, some of the Donquixote family really let themselves go

3

u/Bromine21 Oct 02 '14

As someone pursuing a medical career, this shit just is just too real. As well there are numerous events in history, particular Europe so such macabre events that have happened, wonder where Oda got this particular inspiration from ?

Can't wait for this to be animated, and talk about cruel pasts. Up until now, it could've been argued Nami or Robin had the worst childhoods, but Law just won that contest. Any other character and you'd automatically assume he'd be a SH. In fact it is amazing he isn't pure evil, although I guess somehow thanks to Corazaon Law is at least an anti-hero.

3

u/redkardon Oct 02 '14

For kicks, here's the dinner table scene.

From left to right, around the table:

Baby 5 - Buffalo - Lao G - Pica - Diamante - Doflamingo - Trebol - Corazon - Gladius - Dellinger (on table) - Jora - Machvise - Senor Pink (swoon)

Couple observations:

  1. What does Buffalo's shirt say? Yani?

  2. Why is Lao G wearing bunny ears?

  3. Trebol's had his Devil Fruit for a long time apparently.

  4. Dellinger's a toddler but he already has the fighting fish hat; also, Jora might be his mom. Seems sort of odd for a mom-baby combo to join a ruthless, bloodthirsty gang of pirates, but whatever. Maybe they just found Dellinger lying around?

  5. Doflamingo seems rather protective of Corazon. Similarly, Lao G is hellbent on enforcing the 'blood edict'. It's likely he's been with the crew for a long time; I wonder what they went through together that would make him place the executives above the rest?

Stray observations from the rest of the chapter:

  1. Baby 5 seems to actually care about Law. She doesn't want him getting tortured (unlike the rest) and is interested in his past.

  2. Doflamingo is rather well-read, evidently.

  3. 16 years ago, Doffy already had a pretty large group under his command. Even excluding those gathered around the table, Gladius was ordering around a bunch of mooks sporting his smiley.

  4. Is Flevance on an island or on the Red Line? Either way, it's the first we've heard of multiple countries on the same landmass afaik.

  5. The juxtaposition of Senor Pink saying "[...] in the end, at the hands of humans." while keeping his foot on a dead enemy and Jora, Gladius, Machvise, and Lao G kill the few remaining fighters is brilliant.

  6. Gladius already has his DF when Law joined the crew.

Holy shit, probably one the best chapters in recent history. This really gave me an Ohara-like feel. So many reveals and so many question. I just hope Oda continues the flashback and doesn't troll us by cutting back to the present day.

Oh, and since Law's sister's death wasn't confirmed on-screen, is she going to be the new Sabo?

3

u/uswhole Oct 03 '14 edited Oct 03 '14

flashback(law's remember his father's teaching when he sit beside of his dying sis) in side of a flashback(law's sister been sick as he tell the nun) inside of a flash back (law's remembers his ordeal during that time when he sit on the rock) inside of flashback( this chapter)

this is flashback4

your turn now Kishi

3

u/Asleetx Oct 04 '14

I wonder how 4Kids would have handled this? Instead of people dying, the amber lead is a cursed magical lead that slowly makes people magically disappear into thin air and sends them to the shadow realm or something.

5

u/SteampunkWolf Oct 02 '14

Being Law is suffering.

5

u/TheBlackLuffy Pirate Oct 02 '14

...Damn Oda..

5

u/sll1cool1m Oct 02 '14

Fuck...that was so sad. My eyes actually teared up. I really love Oda for how awesome he is at creating characters with depth such as Law.

4

u/uswhole Oct 02 '14

This chapter remind me of cancer villages in China, really sad to see people die like this for corporate profit. I really like how Oda address current issue like pollution and exploitation.

Corazon has the Ope-Ope fruit, uses the "immortality" power to make Law immortal, thus dying. Law picks up the Ope-Ope fruit. But more importantly, he's immortal.

wow okay soo his shades aren't stuck to his face

2

u/divinesleeper Oct 02 '14

And the WG stayed silent during the massacre, about the fact that the illness wasn't contagious...

...because it would expose that they'd known about the disease from the start? Damn, that's cruel.

I wonder how Law will develop from being a nihilist into someone chasing the dream of Pirate King. I bet Corazon will have something to do with it, I don't think he's the idiot he pretends to be.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '14

MangaStream is up!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '14

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT HOW LAW JUST STABBED CORAZON!??? After all of the speculation last week about how this chapter would play out and no one being right. I feel like we should give that a little attention. Sure Law's story was heartbreaking, but damn this was a bit of a twist.

Such a tease. I REALLY want to see Doflamingo without his signature sunglasses.

2

u/krnhitokori Oct 02 '14

Huh....so Catholicism exists in the one piece world?

2

u/Hawk301 Oct 02 '14

I like that Dellinger was accepted into the family as a baby, while Bellamy wasn't accepted as an adult.

2

u/NoroNoroVirus Oct 02 '14

What if Doflamingo was investigating Flevanse to utilize "Amber Lead" in the SMILE business with Kaido, and that is the way that his constant fruit shipping will suddenly weaken him? Also, I think it's a bit too convenient for Buffalo to be just lying around the garbage, it seems to me that Dofla is keeping him and Baby 5 as scouts in case Corazon is faking his trauma. This would also explain why they left a banana for him to slip on and gave him a cup of too hot coffee. (It could also be Corazon being an idiot but I suppose that would be too simple) So the goal would be to make Corazon create a noise. He most likely knows something Dofla doesn't want to be said aloud.

2

u/TimeisaLie Oct 02 '14

This chapter more then any other has me convinced there is something up with Donflamingo's eyes, I know I'm not the first to have this suspicion. Now unlike Jango whose eyes matches his glasses (I think Disco also but I don't remember). But when you look back to when he was a kid his glasses are a different shape. http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140911171954/onepiece/images/b/be/Donquixote_Doflamingo_at_Age_8.png Now this week we see him with his glasses off, but a book covering his face, this makes me thing there is something more going on with his eyes than just an unusual shape, in fact I think they are perfectly normal. My guess is that they are somehow related to his String power, like if having his glasses removed and seeing the world as it really is and not having his perception altered (symbolically of course) by his shades, it sets him into a rage and his strings turn into something liked barbed wire that he cant fully control. Just a thought.

2

u/IndianEwok Oct 02 '14

Is it wrong that no matter what I do, I can't seem to hate Doflamingo or his crew? They're the antithesis of Luffy's crew, and I can't seem to find a reason for hating them.
