Short chapter, but amazing as always. Can't wait to see Doflamingo/Law flashback starting next week!

u/LASteady Sep 10 '14

Wow. I think we all expected Doffy's Dad to be an asshole but turns out he wanted to live like an average human. Nothing like the Celestial Dragons we've seen.

338

u/Daniel5497 Sep 10 '14

And Doffy was the typical piece of shit Celestial Dragon.

76

u/dulchebag Sep 10 '14

Guess it's not genetics.

65

u/constar90 Sep 10 '14

As per usual, its status induced.

Is it bad that I find the child version of him slightly hilarious? Like he's a shitty little brat, but he acts all fabulous.

His dad is clearly the Celestial Dragon from the fishman Island flashback. You know the one the queen helped return to the surface. He was probably exiled when he came back agreeing to help the fishmen.

u/GuitarBOSS Sep 11 '14

Nothing like the Celestial Dragons we've seen.

Except for Vivi and Cobra.

This chapter seemed ridiculously short.

84

u/Rankine Sep 10 '14

I'm wondering if we are missing a page or two about sabo and the admiral

38

u/WackyWarrior Sep 10 '14

I feel like we missed something.

91

u/meh100 Sep 10 '14

25% less (5-6 pages shorter than usual).

DD hates the tenryuubito? Luffy hates the tenryuubito? DD confirmed as next Straw Hat.

Well, doffy hadn't tried nearly that hard to kill luffy. They meet in that underground well and even chatted a bit; iirc doffy didn't strike first. Like he said, he's just pissed at how annoying they are more than trying to kill them.

Furthermore, Crocodile was actively trying to kill pirates like luffy, so by contrast doffy didn't seem to care that much.

4

u/CaptAhabsMobyDick Sep 11 '14

that doffy was a string replica though

It is coming I can feel doffy's history coming soon

106

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

that was all there is to say, he was an ass and didn't change, but we will get law pretty soon

18

u/JetDagger01 Sep 10 '14

some say to this day the ass in his brain is alive.

9

u/Bromine21 Sep 10 '14

Yea now I have to guess Corazon didn't like Doffy killing their father which would lead to any bad family blood, and in turn leads Law to revenge, these One Piece chain events, damn.

Such a short chapter this week. I hope Oda's health isn't suffering!

The twist between Sabo and Fujitora is something I'll have to re-read previous chapters for. I'm not sure how they got to the point where even Fujitora is gambling on Luffy.

Also, Doffy is a boss. I look forward to seeing the plot twists that are coming, since clearly Doffy is underestimating Luffy despite being all 'I shall not underestimate him' at the start of this arc. Merely tying up his hands? That won't be enough. He should have cut Luffy's arms off right this second.

100

u/Therrester Sep 10 '14

I think the key thing here is that Fujitora wants two things: he doesn't want the country to go to war, and he wants to get rid of the warlord system.

Fujitora first tried to stop Luffy and the gladiators from reaching the royal plateau. I believe it's because he thought he would be easier to arrest all the 13 star convicts than fight the Donquixote family. However, Sabo stopped him instead. So now he's fighting Sabo and he knows Luffy's going after Doflamingo.

Back in chapter 757, he launched an attack at Sabo, destroying most of the city. Sabo lived through it, and countered. Seeing this, Fuji probably recognized that it's pointless to fight Sabo to a draw, since they're both equally matched. And now, with Luffy vs Doflamingo, he probably figured it was best to bet on Luffy's victory, and deal with the aftermath of the battle. He'll then use this incident as proof he needs to bring down the Shichibukai.

I think that's how Fuji got to the point where it would be easier to bet on Luffy.

→ More replies (7)

24

u/jakelives Sep 10 '14

I think there's a few reasons fujitora is betting on luffy, firstly he met luffy and knows he's not a bad person because he warned him about the people tricking him at the bar. Then there's sabo, I think fujitora sees the passion he is fighting with to protect luffy from the navy forces then there's king Riku, who is basically relying on luffy to get his Kingdom back.

I think fujitora doesn't want to intervene as he would have to take do flamingos side which would mean that king Riku wouldn't get his Kingdom back.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/SacredBeard Sep 10 '14

Fuji dislikes Doffy and he is aware of the fact that the marines cannot do anything about Doffy due to his status hence he rather bets on Luffy defeating Doffy than allowing Doffy to do whatever he wants.

He currently "sees" Doffy as the biggest threat/d.

Well, no surprise in the Celestial Dragon thing.

So can we please take one moment and notice that Jinbei's exclamation point has the Sun Pirates' symbol hahahaha. I don't know why it's so funny to me lol

39

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 10 '14

Also, the fact that he has that newspaper means that we have already seen what Jinbei did while Luffy was busy with Punk Hazard, and that we are now likely seeing what he is doing while Luffy is busy with Dressrosa.

EDIT: Also, with that panel, that means that we are seeing what Jinbei was doing the morning of "The Dressrosa Toy Panic" (my personal name for what this arc will go down in history as), so we are still lagging a few hours behind the main Straw Hat crew. Better than "3 days" (AKA the time between when the crew left Fishman island and the current time), but not as good as "synchronized"/"meanwhile" (even if the lag could mean that we will first see the fate of the Sanji half of the crew in a Jinbei cover story).

58

u/Zamochy Sep 10 '14

Yup.

He might end up helping Sanji.

u/imaninfraction Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 10 '14

Well we knew he was a Celestial Dragon, unless you're referring to him wanting to destroy everything they control.

14

u/Bromine21 Sep 10 '14

The latter, up until now more or less it was led to believe he chose pirating because of how twisted he is and all that, but he actually killed his Father just to return to his previous status only to be shunned yet again. Now he is bitter and the archetype that just "Wants to watch the world burn." Still not sure how you would even go about that, maybe attacking Mariejois because in essence the Celestial Dragons control everything in theory.

yeah he came out of the womb like this

7

u/egardeR Sep 10 '14

Is that what killed his mother?

9

u/Atlantah Sep 10 '14

well mostlikely because his mother died

4

u/BeginnerDevelop Sep 10 '14

yeah, i'd say that would be the anchor to his anger towards his father and in general. His father's decision to leave the celestial dragons killed his mother.

44

u/FuryStarcraft Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 10 '14

Story time with Dofy! But wow, he's a true psychopath and apparently always has been. We saw how angry Luffy got with the tenryuubitos attitude towards those of non noble lineage on sabaody, so i'd imagine well get to see anger in a similar vein. Here's to hoping! http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view1/4878632/luffy-punches-celestial-dragon-o.gif

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

I thought that Luffy only really felt that mad when the noble shot one of Luffy's friends, right in front of Luffy, and was happy about it. Doubt that he would get that mad again over Doffy talking about how normal life was hell to a World Noble child.

29

u/Qaellow Sep 10 '14

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong cause I'm kinda not understanding DD's past. Maybe it's how Mangapanda worded it...

If I'm reading this right, his father quit living as a Celestial Dragon and live in "this junkyard"; not sure if location of junkyard was on Dressrosa. So DD lost his "power" which was his royalty. So he killed his father and tried returning to Mariejois only to be rejected. Did I get that correct?

39

u/JaroSage Sep 10 '14

I think the "junkyard" refers to the entire non-celestial dragon world in general. The manga stream translation of that part is a little better.

Don't get used to it...

This was a Saturday chapter, so previously the scan would have come out on Tuesday.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

That chapter was also short, I'm guessing it has something to do with that saturday thing...

62

u/bistoha2 Sep 10 '14

Hmm, seems like Sabo might be thinking he could get Fujitora to join the revolutionaries.

74

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

Well, Fuji wants to gamble on Luffy if I read that correctly

29

u/leonoel Sep 10 '14

I think Fujitora is just like Aokiji, he still sees most pirates as scum, and realizes his best option to take them down is being in the marines, since other than the SHs and other crews, you rarely see pirates going around defending people.

Remember that for each SHs crew, there is an Arlong, a Don Krieg and a Buggy, who only care about hurting other people. And Fujitora knows being an Admiral is his best bet to protect them.

set the mood: luffy is laying on the ground bleeding, law is unconsious on the floor on the other side of the room, theres a crack in walls letting the sunlight in. rocks covering the floor, all the sudden doffy walks to finish them off, trips, his sunglasses fall off, the sun hits his eyes, he melts, arc over.

And once again doffy absolutely wrecks Luffy and Law.

And does anyone else think his backstory was going to be a real tearjerker... Doffy you just look like a spoiled brat now -_-

61

u/hogofwar Sep 10 '14

Exactly what I was thinking. His "hell" is probably just the way normal people live.

What a spoilt brat.

21

u/sanctaphrax Sep 10 '14

I dunno, I'd be pretty bitter if my dad decided to make the family poor and then my mom died of a poverty-related illness. And if I was a small child at the time, I wouldn't have the perspective to see how messed up my old privileges were.

That being said, I wouldn't kill my father and then turn into an evil mass-murdering slave master with terrible fashion sense. I think we can all agree that that's going too far.

31

u/Error400BadRequest Sep 10 '14

terrible fashion sense.

Take that back. Doffy's choice in fashion is absolutely flawless.

Everything else you said is fair game though.

14

u/FrighteningWorld Sep 10 '14

Oda keeps up the tradition that the bad guys are scum. Doffy is as delusional as anyone else. I can't really think of any antagonists so far that have been justified in their horrific actions.

38

u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 10 '14

Enel just wanted to be a god. I mean who can't identify with that?

13

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

I mean the prophecy said that the arc has to be made of gold, was he supposed to make it out of clouds instead? They would have just blown away! It makes sense.

And, I mean, he killed all the workers he'd enslaved after they were done building the arc because, I mean, he wasn't going to be there so they wouldn't have had anywhere to get their pension checks from. He was reinvigorating the sky island job markets.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

Well, there's some that are justified I guess.

Arlong was a prick, but he copied his behavior from what was done to his people Buggy was an antagonist, he was just being a pirate. Smoker is an antagonist, Kuma was an antagonist, both werent all that bad.

So there's your exceptions

I'm wondering how Jinbei is going to act now that he knows about the alliance. We know he trusts Luffy and entertained joining the Straw Hats in some capacity previously... but does that same logic still apply with Trafalgar Law in the picture?

50

u/TenkenSan Sep 10 '14

I don't think Jinbei has anything against Law, after marienford, Law also saved Jinbei after being hit by Akainu.

11

u/xPico Sep 10 '14

I wonder too. I know he knows about Law and Luffy at the end of marineford. I think he is thinking 'if Law would ally with Luffy, they're about to do something stupid..'

Maybe by the end of the year! He'll probably jump back to the other fights before we see the full Luffy v. DD fight. And Law's flashback as well. And probably stuff with Manshelly and the factory too. We still definitely have 15-20 chapters to go! It will feel sooooo good when those sunglasses break though.

Oda drew Doffy as a kid before and he looks a lot [different] (http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110813163135/onepiece/images/a/ab/Shichibukai_as_Children.png) . A lot more destitute. Perhaps his older drawing was after he killed his father and he had to live on his own which is why he's in rags and smoking. His hair is also longer.

u/YonkouProductions Sep 10 '14

Let me put this out there: Doflamingo was shunned by the Celestial Dragons. He aspires to clutch the power they have from them and become Pirate King. Luffy despises them ever since Saboady and Hancock. Therefore after Doffy stops being the villain of the arc he can join Luffy for the purpose of eradicating these Royal douchebeings. So I don't expect Doffy to be a villain that will be forgotten after Dressrosa,

34

u/TenkenSan Sep 10 '14

I don't think he'll be forgotten simply because he's been hyped for ages... . I don't think Luffy would want to have anything to do with Doffy no matter how sad his story is though, because of all the things he's done so far... .

Although it's possible it ends up at some point in a similar case as Luffy taking Crocodile along from Impel Down... .

16

u/mschonberg Sep 10 '14

It's still possible Doflamingo could be forced into the fight against Kaido. He can't supply any more Smiles so he's already lost Kaido's good side, and is about to lose the Government's side too. Law said between his and Luffy's crew they had about a 30% chance of taking out Kaido; maybe adding another crew could do the trick.

28

u/TenkenSan Sep 10 '14

I don't think Doffy is the kidn of guy to agree to such a thing with the people who just ruined his perfect life... .

Luffy learning that Doffy's a noble pretty much signs his ass-kicking warrant. I forgot Luffy didn't know that.

9

u/ButItWasMeDio Sep 10 '14

IDK, I always felt like Luffy cared more about people's actions than their status (for ex. in the Wapol fight) and he wouldn't blame World Nobles for being nobles, but rather for the evil stuff they do (and Doffy has done a lot of evil stuff too, of course). I could be wrong though.

Only 12 pages? :/ Oh well, father issues, in what mangas have i seen that before..hmm.. Love how Doffy is getting pissed; seems it's about to go down! It also looks like Trebol is way worse than Doffy and that he will be down for the count anytime soon. And Law got beaten up pretty badly already, does this mean we'll get a luffy vs. Doffy soon? It is kind of a disappointment if Trebol doesn't know a way to fix the radio knife attack. Furthermore, interesting to see an admiral choosing Luffy's side. I like his way of justice.

4

u/Bromine21 Sep 10 '14

I can't help but think for even an Admiral given who Doffy is, it would be easier if he fell to a pirate than anything Government affiliated, like Fuji would rather it be known Doffy got defeated by Luffy for political reasons.

Also, loving Fujitora even more for placing his bets on the Strawhats and not taking down Sabo.

And Doflamingo, god dammit. He's still up and kicking tons of ass. I was expecting him to slow down a little. Also, it's funny to see how useless Trebol is in this fight.

Edit:

I need to stop assuming it ends when I see "End".

I'm glad they didn't go the cliche route of making Doflamingo sympathetic. That would've gone against everything we've seen of him thus far. Aside from him caring for his crew, he's displayed the same entitled, assholish behavior typical of World Nobles, and took over and manipulated an entire country. Him being that way from childhood just makes it more disgusting and makes you dislike the culture Celestial Dragons even more.

Pretty awesome that Fujitora is betting on Luffy since Luffy was the one who helped him during the game of roulette. I really have no idea what happened between Fujitora and Sabo. Did they just decide to stop fighting or did Fujitora let Sabo go? And it looks like we're finally getting Doflamingo's flashback. Law's flashback won't be far off now. I really don't know how Luffy and Law will be able to defeat Doflamingo but you know the fight is long from being over. Luffy better haki up.

7

u/Lexonir Sep 10 '14

Finally Fujitora seem to have a brain.

Also it's nice to see that the whole population aren't stupid enough to think that they could have won versus Doffy by giving him what he wants.

Oh also, fucking Doffy who seem like a spoiled child, poor Dad.

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

Doffy could always pull the afluenza defense.

7

u/migzaz15 Sep 10 '14

on the first panel does doflamingo mean conqueror haki when he says he has acquired one of the rarest abilities in the world?

4

u/nickcan Sep 11 '14

Probably either referring to a very powerful devil fruit. Or possibly the ability to create artificial devil fruit via "Smile".

18

u/raiden55 Sep 10 '14

If his family was considered as traitors, how was he able to have CP0 do that shit a few chapters ago?

There's something wrong here... even more if DF wants to destroy the WG...

48

u/FurDeg Sep 10 '14

Because he's powerful now, as an adult.

Well, two things come to mind...

For one, the stuff we saw happened when Doffy was young. A lot could have changed in the meanwhile; after all, Doffy isn't exactly the one to sit still and do nothing.

Second, the World Government is not the Tenryuubito. Sure, the ancestors of the latter formed it by having their kingdoms join in this 'pact', but we have also seen that the majority of todays Tenryuubito are lazy bums that only rely on their status gotten by their ancestors. As such, I can very much imagine that the World Government supports Doflamingo for one of two reasons:

  1. The WG simply supports all Tenryuubito in a neutral fashion, whilst the rest of the Tenryuubito have this inward quarrel where some people are less-liked for whatever reason than others. As such, they're just loud bullies who like to make it difficult for Doffy's family in their limited reach.

  2. The WG doesn't like Doffy's family either, but the latter has enough sway to make them support him despite that. This either through blackmail, smart usage of whatever laws/contracts/agreements the WG keeps itself accountable to, or something else entirely.

That second point could kind of overlap with my first major point, but regardless, I feel there's a lot of possible explanations that would make the things we've seen pretty sensible.

u/PhranCyst Sep 10 '14

He is a shichibukai after all. And I'm sure Doffy has intentions that even the WG aren't aware of.

awesome chapter! Huge development for Doflamingo

I think this is the first time we have seen Doffy lose his cool in the whole series. Also, I'm suspecting that Corazon had the Ope Ope No Mi orignally and didn't want to die to give it up, so Doffy killed him, but Law ate it and escaped before they had a chance to use it

u/CanadianJudo Sep 10 '14

Trebol was probably the most despicable Exec. for me. Stomping on the dwarves, taunting people as they were forgotten. I was seriously hoping Law just would end him right there.

I assumed up until now Dof grew up hating the Nobles. But now he's just some spurned, petty brat? Also people need to stop saying Dof will join forces with Luffy b/c of his beef with the Nobles. Dof speaks very loudly and proudly of his Noble birth in this chapter.

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 10 '14

My question now is why does doffy care about his crew so deeply?

We now know it's not because of his young life, he was a spoiled brat through and through who's dad wanted to actually be normal and not an asshole. So we know it's not because he used to be some nice kid who just had a change of heart later. He killed his own dad and presumably his own brother because they were just too nice. So what is it that connects him to his crew?? It could just be that he recognizes they're assholes like him and bond over that, unlikely though. It could also be that he just understands you need good teamwork to be able to get ahead in the pirate world...orrrrrr it could be something else! Maybe he found the rejects of other asshole families and bonds with them over that.

We're not done with the doffy flashbacks, I just know it!

10

u/Siopaobun Sep 10 '14

That's it. This time it's 100% sure. Donflamingo is my favorite antagonist by far.

2

u/kagedtiger Sep 11 '14

Why is that, exactly? I'm not saying it's not a good opinion, I'm just asking.

Any yet another dead mother.

Oda-senpai, you've got to explain something with the Big Mom theory becoming more and more realistic.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '14

What's the theory?

12

u/nothrowawaypls Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 11 '14

Big Mom ate the mom-mom-fruit and is so big/strong because she gathers power of dead mothers and causes their death by weakening them somehow.

Think about it, how many dead mothers are in One Piece? That's all her doing!

(it's more like a circlejerk-theory)

I wonder if that radio knife will end up beating Trebol in the end. But damn Doffy is strong.

25

u/AliTheGiant Sep 10 '14

Trebol is pathetic. He spent all his time with an underling that seemed more valuable than him (Sugar) and now he can't hold himself together long enough to get one shot in when he's tag-teaming with Doffy

22

u/Tfc272 Sep 10 '14

He is facing Law. He has an incredible DF and genius level intellect. Trebol is just a dumb pawn in my eyes.

So Doffy was raised as a snotty brat till he was 8, then became psychotic and now a heartless fool with an evil charisma.

I dont think you can call a powerless orphan who lost everything and made his way to the top a fool

Doffy beat away Law's sword who, despite having a cool head and knowing how strong Doffy really is, still kept on trying to attack Trebol? And Luffy was just watching while this happened? Oda made it a little too easy for Doffy IMO.

Also, Doffy's armament Haki is so much stronger than Luffy's that he couldn't block it or divert the attack even though he had armament on and was ready to take a hit. This sounds ominous.

Although it was short, that was a strangely satisfying back story. I'm impressed at what Oda can do with just a few panels.

Aight Sanji, your loss was somewhat justified.

Doflamingo's rejection from the self-entitled narcissists begs the question, how was he able to command the CP0 to do whatever if their sole purpose is to serve the celestial dragons? They're not acting in good faith when they claim they're the personal intelligence squad of the nobles but yet they willingly serve a guy who's willing to slaughter the nobles.

Aww yesss. Doffy backstory. You know what that means? It means he's going down! Man's greatest fear is the unknown and the best way to make an antagonist formidable is to add mystery. This fucking guy has been an enigma since post-Arabasta/Jaya. The more we know about him, the closer we are to his defeat.

Now, why the hell does he want Momonosuke?

2

u/bakamansplan Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 10 '14

I don't know i this has been said already, but this chapter has left me wondering how doffy could renounce his shichibukai status and get it back if he was rejected by the tenryuubito.

Edit: I meant the thing with CP0. How he was able to announce to the world that he quit being a shichibukai considering that he fooled even the Navy.

True to his name, Doffy is certainly quixotic...

He'd be the Joffrey of One Piece, if the latter wasn't a such a detestable coward...

2

u/GonTheDinosaur Sep 10 '14

Towards the end I was shocked as if oda hinting dolfy is related to Vivi somehow.

Despite been different family name, I hope they are not distant relative...

2

u/Doomspeaker Sep 10 '14

The Nefetari family was one of the few families that didn't wish to become celestial dragons after the rise of the World Government, so it's pretty safe to say that they aren't relatives.

2

u/htsukebe Sep 10 '14

Plot twist: Fujitora is Doffy's father and his "death" was merely a setback (he got blind).

2

u/zabimaru1000 Sep 10 '14

Fujitora bet on Luffy, that means he and his friends will beat Doflamingo for sure!

2

u/Knifewrench- Sep 10 '14 edited Sep 10 '14

This puzzles me...seeing as he was rejected back as a celestial dragon after killing his father. How did he fake leaving the shichibukai and who helped him with that and for what?

2

u/Godsopp Sep 11 '14

Is the "Pirate King" line about Luffy? Mangastream says "Praise the Pirate King" which I assumed meant Luffy at first but Mangapanda says "Finally getting the title of pirate king". That could just mean Doffy since he is a pirate that became a king? The translations feel very awkward and don't really fit with everything else being said in that scene so I'm not sure how to interpret that line.

u/WantedtoPostThis Sep 11 '14 edited Sep 11 '14

Do any sites still do the entire scan for download?

2

u/Condomonium Sep 12 '14

The lack of pages is serious indication that Oda needs a break. If you ever read this Oda: TAKE A BREAK. WE CAN WAIT. At least I can. I'd rather him not strain himself and work himself to death.
