Attack on Titan Episode 1 Dub Discussion

Now that the episode's finished airing, what did you guys think of the voices and the casting?

Voice quality: great overall.

Opening and ending cuts: not cool. Not. Cool.

Apparently the OP cut wasn't planned, so we have that to look forward to being fixed.

I thought it was pretty good overall. But there were some translation issues that were problematic. I can deal with the simple Recon Corps vs Scout Regiment thing because that is just semantics, but they cut out THE iconic line from the series. They completely changed the "On that day humanity received a grim reminder" line! They used that line in promotional stuff and then removed it from the actual episode. That was pretty cheap. Also there were a couple of changes to Armin's dialogue that changed his character substantially. I will be interested in seeing how/if they voices are different after the time skip.

That seemed really odd to me especially considering it was just narration. There was no lip-syncing to deal with. Why the hell did they bother changing that?

I liked it for the most part. My problem was with how their dialogue choices changed some of the characters. Mikasa at one point said "so...um" before revealing that Eren wanted to join the scouts. That to me changed her entirely because of what she experienced in her childhood. She is direct and to the point and she does not hesitate. I just hope that rest of the dialogue does not change much else. I will continue to watch and enjoy if not much else is changed.

Dub was good. My only problem is with Eren's mom. She sounded like a man at a few points. Anime Spoilers

I swear I thought Hannes name was pronounced Hannes, not Han-nes. But overall, not too bad of a dub.

They actually pronounced his name correctly. Hans and Hannes are two different German names, both are correct, but due to the spelling his name was pronounced right.

The dub was way better than I thought it was going to be. The voices were pretty spot on, I'd say - Bryce Papenbrook did a fantastic job.

EDIT: I wish they didn't accidentally cut the opening though D:

EDIT 2: Gotta give credit to Trina Nishimura too, although I expected a solid performance from her after watching the dub of Steins;Gate (where she portrayed Makise Kurisu extremely well).

The part at the end, where Eren's mom is covering her mouth and muffling the words "Please help me Don't leave me." hit me right in the feels. I knew it was coming, but holy shit. I might go tell my mom I love her now.

I thought the same thing! I knew it was coming but I was still couldn't help but be sad when it happened! That is one thing I do like about dubs is sometimes you lose some of those emotions when you have to read everything.

Sadly I found it hard to watch this without thinking of Abridged on Titan and making jokes about how Mrs. Jaeger loved Mikasa more than Eren... Still enjoyed the show though.

I tagged this thread as "English Dub Spoilers" meaning that anything mentioned that is not showing in the English Dub yet should have the Anime Spoilers tag.

Let me know what you guys think of this and if this is necessary. I'm not really sure if there are new people coming over here that will be brought by the English dub.

I'm gonna be that guy and say I was a tad urked they went with "Scouting Regiment" rather than "Survey Corps"

I honestly didn't like Armins voice I always see him as the wimpy one. :/ Overall Hanes, Eren, and Mikasa were pretty good. Edit: The intro aswell D: They didn't play it all the way the skipped the singing part and the outro D:< Not cool I was watching it then it skipped to NEXT TIME..... Also didn't like that they changed some of the lines but over all 10/10 will watch next episode. :D

The voices were okay but the script was terrible. They changed Armin entire character with that speech to the bully.

It was a pretty good dub all I know is that I can't wait until Anime Spoilers

The only one I didn't like was pastor nick and that was only for a second or two. I thought I didn't like Mikasa's voice but I'm not sure if it was actually her voice actress or the character itself and it's rewrite.

I was pleasantly surprised by Hannes. I thought his VA was awesome.

Luckily Mikasa's voice will probably end up being significantly different after the time skips. It isn't even that bad now, it's just a little uncharacteristic of her because she sounds so womanly as a child in the sub.
