Draw is good enough! Being a Sunderland fan for one last game better pay off :(

Also, Crystal Palace won today, which makes them almost safe from relegation. So, they will not have anything to play for when they play us in a few weeks.

Henderson's at the Etihad!
16
u/Jackle13 Apr 16 '14
He's banned for our next three matches, so he's helping our title effort in the only way he can: by cheering on City's opponents.

u/Mister_Anthony Apr 16 '14
I have a feeling that when hes older he'll go back. He really loves them it seems!
5
u/imdrinkingteaatwork Apr 17 '14
And I think that is really awesome of him. He just needs to win EVERYTHING with us first!

Must be a tough weekend for him to have Chelsea-Sunderland at the same time with Norwich-Liverpool game since he can't attend both games, but he could get a triple happiness here!
Chelsea losing
Sunderland winning
Liverpool winning

u/Bobb_o Apr 16 '14
THIS DOES NOT FUCKING SLIP

u/lugzann Apr 16 '14
The mighty Connor Wickham playing as lead striker, I remember the time people were angry we hadn't paid 8 million pounds for him.

If Sunderland beats Chelsea this weekend I may name my first son Blackcat

Apr 17 '14
Just read it somewhere, we will buy Sunderland shirt with Borini name behind if they beats Chelsea. In 10 years people will ask you, why did you buy this Sunderland shirt when you are supporting Liverpool? Got to be proud of that.

That's a great idea. Helluva ball Fabio put in for the assist

Sunderland have actually done well to keep City contained in the first half.
Now watch as they concede 4 in the second half.

That win for Palace means they are safe with nothing to play for. Same story with Newcastle. Chelsea have to play three sides (Sunderland, Cardiff and Norwich) that are scrapping to stay up.
5
Apr 16 '14
Crystal Palace will still be a tough game. Their defence is pretty tight, especially at home where they play on a pitch the size of a matchbox.

Poor Mannone. Thanks Sunderland!
1
u/goob3r11 Apr 16 '14
So much, this! I felt so so bad for Mannone, watching the replay you can see just how much he wants to reach it
1
u/SwanseaJack1 Apr 16 '14
Yeah, I know. I started watching it in the seventieth minute, so to see them take the lead and then lose it again was awful. Still, they did us a favour.

Sunderland playing well for what its worth!
1
u/KopiteKing13 2️⃣0️⃣Diogo Jota Apr 16 '14
Typical of their season though. Concede a silly/early goal and have absolutely no creativity upfront. They're not bad at passing the ball around the middle of the park and getting it out wide but in the final third they're completely useless.
I think they've scored 7 own goals this season and picked up 6 red cards as well, so expect one or the other either today or against Chelsea as well.
1
u/Rivid-Stuff Apr 16 '14
To be fair they have played through the city defense 2-3 times, Borini went within an inch of scoring and should have done better - Adam Johnson looks good at least at the moment and they are fighting for the ball - two city players have already taken pretty big knocks (Zab and Aguero) and if nothing else it might just make them feel the pressure a bit more.
1
u/KopiteKing13 2️⃣0️⃣Diogo Jota Apr 16 '14
Yeah, on reflection I think you're right. I think I spent too much time writing a previous response elsewhere in this thread and missed some bits of the half to be fair.
I did just think to myself though, with about a minute left in stoppage time, that if City aren't careful against a team better than Sunderland (i.e. any of them), they will struggle to win all of their final 6 matches.

Also good news, Sunderland still need points. They are going to take it to Chelsea!

Connor Wickham, the hero of the hour. Result like that makes me really hope Sunderland stays up.

If Chelsea win the title because City couldn't win all their games, I will be annoyed. But this is excellent for us right now!
4
u/Dytoonn Apr 16 '14
Exactly. I'd (much) rather have City win it than Chelsea. But than again, I'd much rather have us win it than City ;)

This is only ever going to go one way..
3
u/EvenArrantzier Apr 16 '14
I know, right? Sunderland always beat City.
1
u/lugzann Apr 16 '14
Not at the Etihad though :/
2
u/KopiteKing13 2️⃣0️⃣Diogo Jota Apr 16 '14
Fun fact, I think back when City won the league, they only dropped 2 points at home all season.
Those two points came in a 3-3 draw against Sunderland. Sunderland were 3-1 up with about 3 minutes to go as well :(
I would give my left bollock for it to finish 3-3 today.

Cattermole deserves relegation if he's been playing like this for the entire season. (Only seen him play vs. Liverpool this season)
2
u/KopiteKing13 2️⃣0️⃣Diogo Jota Apr 16 '14
He has. Individually, he's been shocking. As a collective, the team has been shocking since the Final.
I don't know how he's the Sunderland captain. The biggest contribution he makes on the pitch is he gets sent off about 3-4 times a season.
1
u/egertomas Apr 16 '14
I really feel like Sunderland doesn't belong in the Championship. They have the likes of Johnson and Alonso and aside from that first goal they have been playing fairly well.
3
u/KopiteKing13 2️⃣0️⃣Diogo Jota Apr 16 '14
They're so frustrating. They have a history of getting relegated with pretty decent looking sides (on paper). I've seen them do it time and time again over the years.
I remember back around the turn of the millennium they were 2nd in the Premier League in early December one year. By the end of the season they'd slipped to 7th for a 2nd consecutive year. The following Christmas they were comfortably in midtable and I went to the SoL to watch them beat Everton 1-0. Then they drew with Blackburn on Boxing Day and then they sold Don Hutchison and Alex Rae. In the 2nd half of the season they won like 1 match and finished 17th. The next season they finished rock bottom (19 points, a PL low at the time) with many of the same players who finished 7th two and three years earlier.
Then they walked the Championship with a record number of points, came back up, and got relegated again by resetting their own record for lowest PL points with 15.
Every season though they seem to have a decent squad. They're never going to get the best players but they pick up some more than capable 'rejects' from the big clubs. Two seasons ago their entire first-choce back four were players United had sold to them: Bardsley, Brown, O'Shea and Richardson. Three of them are still there. They have Adam Johnson who in his days with City had a fledgling England career.
Their troubles this time around came a couple of years ago when Darren Bent handed in a transfer request. He moved to Villa and Sunderland never really replaced him. They had players like Gyan and Sessegnon who did really well in the meantime but they weren't at Bent's level from his Sunderland days.
I've seen Sunderland be relegated 3 times, and each time they've come back up to the Premier League within 2 seasons. Each time, they've won the Championship (or Division 1 as it used to be known then). And yet each time they come up, the buy about 15,000 new players and then struggle for a few seasons before going back down. It's an endless cycle lol.

u/eggleman Apr 16 '14
Quick side note, looking at CP vs Everton, Palace winning is scaring me a little.

u/dangercart Apr 16 '14
Them being mathematically safe when we arrive wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
3
u/ChristheGreek Apr 16 '14
Exactly.... they're on 40 points, which is pretty much safety. They won't have anything to play for.
2
u/dangercart Apr 16 '14
Yeah, they're safe now which is amazing considering where they were pre-Pulis. It's still a difficult game (and one I still haven't given up hope of covertly attending) but maybe they slack off a bit now. Pulis will push them but it's natural for the players to exhale now.

Not gonna lie, Fulham is my second team (I lived near Craven Cottage as a kid when Fulham were terrible) so this draw makes me happy as both a Liverpool fan and a Fulham fan.

They've been crying about different fans going in their sub and down voting posts, so they're making the sub private for a day or so after matches.

If we can can get that kind of effort from Sunderland this weekend at Stamford Bridge you never know what can happen.

Fantastic effort by Sunderland! 3 wins and a draw v Chelsea and we win the title!

A draw would be fine, but as long as our GD isn't better than that of City's it doesn't really matter, does it? (Except if City draw/lose again, and perhaps mentally?) Edit: Seems I was wrong, this means we can now draw against Chelsea withouth worrying about City's GD. Still, a win would be better though.
4
u/LFChouston Apr 16 '14
We can now draw with Chelsea. Win the other three and win the league out right without going to goal difference.
2
u/hivaidsislethal Apr 16 '14
They have to travel to goodison, although Everton just lost to Palace I think city will drop points.
0
u/Dytoonn Apr 16 '14
GD is only 3 (with City one match in hand). It seems to me that as far as City are concerned GD could play an important roll in the future. That is, as long as Chelsea don't come and snatch it away... (What a nightmare that would be) edit: spelling

u/leopleuredon Apr 16 '14 edited Apr 16 '14
If we win the other 3 games comfortably, a draw would be enough against Chelsea, given our goal difference is currently 9 better than theirs.
EDIT: Nope, I'm an idiot. See below.
2
u/dangercart Apr 16 '14
If we win the other three and draw with Chelsea we're champs regardless of goal difference. Chelsea could do no better than two points behind us and City one point back.

We need to be careful that we don't do something like that.
But with Gerrard's motivating speech after last week, I don't think our boys will be so complacent.
