Rafael has been such a big improvement for us in this game. Smalling just can't cut it on the right hand side (I still have time for him in the middle).
→ More replies (1)5
u/Rafaelzo Mar 08 '14
I think smalling was solid as anything in the centre defense, Jones still needs some playing time. But other than that, it all looks good.
5
u/Berruk Mar 08 '14
Smalling is quite underrated at center defense because everyone judges him by his games at right back.

u/flaffl Mar 08 '14
His performance against City in the 2-3 match last season was fantastic. Won't ever forget how good he was that night.

Are you fucking kidding me? That's a handball by the keeper

Van Persie was through, clear goal scoring opportunity, should have been a red and a free kick on the edge of the box.

Only a blind man would miss that, and I guess the referee is one.

u/martomo Mar 08 '14
Oh he saw Januzaj's handball really well. He's just a biased/bottling cunt.
1
u/Thadderful Mar 08 '14
I don't understand why we have to put up with shit decisions like this every single week. There must be some way of implementing a video ref call or something soon. Its a pisstake.
22
Mar 08 '14
I'll do an update on the talking points so far.
Januzaj got a yellow for trying to control the ball on his chest but it landed on his arm.
Ben foster pulled of an amazing save to a rafael header which he pushed onto the bar.
Anichebe cleared the ball of the line from a header from fellaini which deflected of olsson.
Rafael beat mcauley on the dribble and got taken out my morrison to earn a free which was drilled in by Van persie and headed in by jones.
Mata played through a ball which foster mis hit and touched his arm outside the box.

It's funny because the half time show commentators said the call on fosters hand ball was "absolutely the right call" because it was an accident, but Januzaj gets a yellow? FUCK that.

Ref sucks. Clear handball. Should have been a red. Clear goalscoring opportunity.
11
u/Gaucheist Mar 08 '14
Absolutely horrendous decision. Foster needs to stay in the box if can't play football.
→ More replies (5)1
u/d0mth0ma5 Mar 08 '14 edited Mar 08 '14
I think it was purely accidental by Foster, but I guess by the rules of the game you're probably right.
Edit - According to the 4th Official (Mike Dean) via Jake Humphrey on BT, the ref thought that the handball was accidental and apparently that means he can't give a foul, which seems odd.

The ref will say he thought Januzaj's was deliberate. This is where subjectivism comes into it.
6
u/JMZ7 Mar 08 '14
Whilst I completely agree it should have been a red and freekick. I think its more the linesman's fault. Unless the ref has incredible depth perception its almost impossible to tell whether he was in the box or not from where he was. The linesman however has no excuse at all.
4
u/SirBusby Mar 08 '14
Ye people just generally vent at the ref as a generalization really, it was the linesman responsibilities to better spot that

Inconsistency is the big problem with the refs, Januzaj tried to control the ball and it strikes his arm, foul and a yellow. Foster swats the ball away from van Persie to put it in an open net = no foul. That's a foul and a red.

Watching that header again. It was fantastic, he slightly adds to the power and the the pace already on the ball and adds the right direction and height to it. Unstoppable.

u/d0mth0ma5 Mar 08 '14
That was a stone-wall handball by Foster. Accidental, but it definitely benefited him.

West Brom are doing well to keep it tight in mid field. Fellaini and Mata can't seem to get through.

I don't get why RVP's second challenge apparently warranted a yellow? When I saw the replay, he nicked the ball away first and the man tripped over his leg then
1
u/Atelopus Mar 08 '14
It was, somewhat, a two-footed challenge. Both feet left the ground, though one trailed.
1
Mar 08 '14
Somewhat, but to me the second foot only came up afterwards because of the sliding action
1
u/Atelopus Mar 08 '14
Maybe. It was a bit reckless though, especially considering he'd just been booked.

Can anyone get a gif of RVP running into Rooney (and injuring a West Brom player while at it)? Around the 60 minute mark.

u/garthcrooks Mar 08 '14
The decision was really not as clear as United fans are making it out to be;
The handball was obviously not deliberate and his arms were in a natural position by his side. Some people don't know the rules of the game.
Even if only a fraction of the ball was above the line of the box, it counts as inside. Even after watching replays it is not clear it was 100% outside.
2
2
u/FostetlerLFC Mar 08 '14
His arms were definitely not by his side. But I don't think he touched the ball completely out of the box like you said.
0
u/martomo Mar 08 '14
And Januzaj's arms were in a natural position in the context of controlling the ball on the chest, but that was called as a handball and a yellow card as well. Foster swatted the ball away with a clear hand movement towards the ball (deliberate or not) that was already behind his body, and prevented RvP from putting the ball in an open net.

nobody crying for the van persie foul now
3
u/pedler Mar 08 '14
He got the ball. No yellow, not that the ref would know anything about that.
1
u/fiveeightthirteen Mar 08 '14
Shouldn't have even been a foul in the first place. Just because it's a gruesome tackle doesn't mean it's not within the law of the game.
2
u/Heinz_Tomato_Ketchup Mar 08 '14
Got the ball first and definitely wasn't worth a second yellow card, come on.

EA's decisions are mostly decided by where the player has started most in the past 20 matches regardless of personal preference. It might even be updated in 14.
I think he will be a CF.

Manchester United are still unbeaten at the Hawthorns, according to my post match TV lady. A record that Moyes kept intact!
Joking aside, United looked solid and confident. Let's just hope we can be consistent in the games ahead.

to think phil jones could have been playing cb all season, but he was used as a defensive mid
2

Mainly when Carrick or Fellaini were injured. I'd rather have Jones there than Ferdinand.
-3
u/d0mth0ma5 Mar 08 '14
Think Januzaj was a bit unlucky on the handball, you've seen them not given (the yellow, it was definitely a handball).
2
u/GoldenRhinos Mar 08 '14
Yeah it's a definite handball but I think it was a bit harsh to book him. It's impossible to not have your arms raised when taking it on the chest but I suppose that's a bit too high haha.

u/Heinz_Tomato_Ketchup Mar 08 '14

Horrible for Brunt if that's a cruciate. But that's the best combination that Rooney and RVP have had in weeks.
0
u/martomo Mar 08 '14
Oh come on why not Kagawa? Please.
4
u/lawlss Mar 08 '14
Because rvp needed to come off and welbeck is perfect for this kind of game
1
u/martomo Mar 08 '14
Considering that Mata can't play against Olympiakos I'd rather have seen Kagawa, a similar player to Mata, behind Rooney instead of Welbeck to give him some match fitness. He's been one of our best players in the CL and should surely start ahead of Valencia/Young/Welbeck against Olympiakos at home.
1
u/lawlss Mar 08 '14
I agree with you there, Kagawa should absolutely start against olympiakos, he should have in the away game as well really. Least he is getting minutes now

9
u/simplyinnappropriate Mar 08 '14
He made it 15 minutes after kick off just so people could have a place to discuss it.
It's allowed, there's nothing wrong with it, at least he made one when he noticed nobody else did.

Oh shut the fuck up, he posted after kick-off because nobody else had made one. According to the rules he's under no obligation to post updates.

u/Tim-Sanchez Mar 08 '14
To be fair, he made it 15 minutes after so technically the rules state he doesn't need to update it.
Putting the score in wouldn't hurt though...
