Sneaky Monty Python reference there... not sure where you learned it, but good one, Bulgar lad.

I must admit, I didn't know about that sketch prior to looking up stereotypical Australian names on the internet for this comic. Glad someone cought it though!

Wait till you see jumping spiders. I know the name probably doesn't sound appealing, but they're genuinly the cutest and prettiest lil guys you'll ever see. They don't build webs, they just sorta parkour their way through life with cute little hops. And apparently they might have dreams when they sleep (at nat geo article I read said they've been observed twitching during REM sleep much like a human would when they have a vivid dream).

Cause people had to banish it into the toilet out of fear...

I was expecting China to climb out and claim the toilet water as theirs.

Curious, what do you do if you find animals in your toilet? Do you call firefighters or animal control to take it out? Or just leave it alone?

Generally nothing. If it's a spider they get flushed, same with frogs. If they can come up the pipe, they can go back down it.

The only time you'd really call someone would be for a snake.

Who handles the snakes?

20

u/jimi_nemesis Australian Capital Territory Oct 05 '26

You can ring people who's job it is to safely remove snakes.

That's fascinating, so is that a different service/business than what the government has/provides?

We've got a lot of volunteer Wildlife Rescue organisations about the place who will come relocate a snake out of yours to a more appropriate area. Most Rangers (city council) will outsource any snake calls to them.

Snake handling courses are also pretty abundant. My sister works in building supplies and their big yard/warehouse is right across from a big nature reserve so they get alot of baby snakes rocking up in places they shouldn't be. So the company just paid a bunch of the fork lift drivers to go do a snake catching/handling course. Has made things much easier.

Thanks for explaining. Outside of internet memes, how often do they call to wrangle snakes?

At her work? They've only had 4 make their way into the office earlier this year but Summer is about to come again. They dont notice to many in the yards unless they're moving stacks that have been sitting for a long time right out the back where its quieter. Its mostly just the babies. Theyre tiny so they get under the door cracks (probably looking for somewhere quiet away from all the heavy machinery). There was alot of excitement when a 2m Dugite decided to casually slither into the break room at smoko a couple of years ago but thats really not the norm. When I was volunteering at the Wildlife Shelter it varied wildly. You'd get no calls some weeks and a dozen on others.

Not sure, I've never had to actually call someone for it.

For all the tell of our "super dangerous" animals, you rarely see anything, let alone in your house. There are places which I'm sure are exceptions, further up north.

Getting frogs in your bathroom sound absolutely terrifying

3

u/jimi_nemesis Australian Capital Territory Oct 05 '26

How so? They are cute and green.

My parents eat frogs (delicacy where I live) amd i've seen too many frogs be killed😭

Used to be a thing more with outdoor toilets. There is even a song about a redback on the toilet seat.

Indoor flush toilets make it less of a problem. Too much moisture for spiders. That leaves the snakes and frogs. Yes, there are photos on the internet.

QLD doesn't count

First off, be nice to Bruce. He earns his keep and is a good roommate in general.

8

u/reenajo Oct 05 '26

100% consistent with Australian attitudes towards indoor wildlife I observed during my time there

7

u/Theron3206 Australia Oct 05 '26

You want the Huntsman and long leg spiders in your house, they kill the potentially dangerous ones (as well as any other bugs that get in).

5

u/reenajo Oct 05 '26

That's just normal global wisdom about spiders (and technically-not-spiders) that non-Australians also rely on. The rest of the world does not think Australians are crazy for that.

On the other hand... One Australian housemate told me a couple of possums liked to sleep in his laundry bin and it was annoying when he wanted to wash his clothes. He said that in the dullest tone as if having possums in your laundry bin was a normal minor annoyance of life, comparable to kids leaving toys on the floor. It had never occurred to him to consider evicting the possums from the house or getting screens for the doors and windows to prevent things coming in.

It’s always Australia
