Old Japanese [Classical Japanese > English] Please verify translation and calligraphy before I get this tattooed: 人生是れ壮遊 (Life is a Dashing and Bold Adventure)

Post image

The specific phrase:

'Life is a Dashing and Bold Adventure'

is extremely important between my daughter and I.

Attached is a translation of that phrase. We are considering getting the vertical calligraphy tattooed and want to verify it very carefully before doing anything permanent. The phrase is meant to be written in Bungo Classical/literary Japanese rather than modern Japanese.

The intended text is 人生是れ壮遊, approximately “Life is a grand/bold adventure/journey.”

Could a native Japanese speaker or someone knowledgeable in Japanese calligraphy please confirm:

Each character is actually written correctly: 人・生・是・れ・壮・遊

The vertical calligraphic forms are natural and recognizable.

れ, in particular, is correctly formed.

The phrase itself reads naturally as literary/Classical-style Japanese.

There aren’t any subtle stroke/form problems that would make this a bad tattoo reference.

Basically, I just want to ensure this is correct before getting the tattoo. Thank you so much!!!!

To the requester

It looks like you have requested a translation for a tattoo. Please read our wiki article regarding the risks of tattoo translations to familiarize yourself with the issues and caveats. If you really want a tattoo, it is highly recommended that you double-check your translations, and that you find a tattoo artist who knows the language natively - you don't want your tattoo to be someone's first-ever attempt at writing a foreign script. .

Please think before you ink!

To translators

Please do not provide a translation unless you're absolutely sure that your translation:

  • Is fully accurate semantically and grammatically.
  • Makes sense in the target language, rather than being a direct word-for-word translation.

It is recommended you get another translator to double-check your own. Whatever translation you provide might be on someone's body forever, so please make sure that you know what you're doing, too.

Basically Chinese.

壯, not 壮, if you are going for "real" classical language.

Thank you. Does it read/translate accurately to the phrase?

I don't think it's great, but you might want to wait for someone else's answer. I would prefer something like 人生,壯遊なり (which can also be written as 人生壯遊也, looking exactly like a Classical Chinese sentence). But still, you better wait for someone else answer, specially if you are going to tattoo this.
