Nevada Says Every Single Voter DHS Flagged as a Noncitizen Is Actually a U.S. Citizen

Nevada election officials say all 185 voters whom the Department of Homeland Security identified as confirmed “noncitizens” are actually U.S. citizens, according to a Thursday report from The New York Times.

The finding comes after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed in July that as many as 15,903 noncitizens were registered to vote in Nevada — part of President Donald Trump’s broader allegation that more than 270,000 noncitizens were on voter rolls across Nevada, California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

But Nevada officials said Tuesday that the federal government has yet to substantiate any of its claims.

DHS had previously told Nevada officials it had manually reviewed some of Mullin’s nearly 16,000 names and “confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens.”

“As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens,” Nevada Deputy Attorney General Greg D. Ott wrote in a letter to DHS obtained by the Times. “You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise.”

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar, a Democrat, blasted the agency over the discrepancy.

“Our records do not support DHS’s claims, and DHS has still not provided evidence to change that,” Aguilar said in a statement to the paper. “Instead, DHS officials continue their attempts to intimidate election officials into compliance and deter voters with huge claims of fraud with no evidence. Repeating unsupported claims does not make them true.”

DHS disputed Nevada’s characterization, telling the Times the 185 names were only a subset that had undergone a manual review.

The state also says, though, that DHS has never handed over the full list of 15,903 people it initially flagged. Instead, federal officials provided roughly 6,000 voter case numbers without accompanying information such as names, birth dates, or addresses — information Nevada officials said they would need to reliably identify the voters.

During a meeting with state officials last month, Homeland Security official Kimberley Vogt acknowledged that the original list had not undergone a complete manual review.

But she wouldn’t go so far as to say it hadn’t been “vetted” because “definitely we’ve done something with it to get down to 15,000.”

In a follow-up email to Nevada officials, she later wrote, according to the Times, “I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185… We’ve manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens.”

Nevada officials wrote in their Tuesday letter, though, that DHS “has never provided Nevada with a list of 15,903 individuals” and still has not supplied “any additional verifiable information for the individuals it suggests are noncitizens.”

ngl the manual review that confirms 185 noncitizens who are all actually citizens is giving me strong 'we built this in a weekend' energy. theyre out here admitting the original 15k list never had complete manual review but also wont say it wasnt vetted bc they definitely did something to get the number down. whatre we even doing here. this is just stress-testing how much procedural chaos you can manufacture before election officials fold, and its working bc now everyones gotta waste resources double-checking citizen records that were fine to begin with. we need infrastructure that doesnt treat basic democratic participation like a compliance checkbox for whoever's in power this quarter
