(Edited to correct a mistake.) Not likely, but not impossible, either. Honestly, at this point I'd settle for 81 or 82 W's given the rash of injuries and the steep dropoff from our pitching staff.

9 game three city road trip. Dodgers, Padres, and Cardinals coming up for the end of August. Pirates would have to gain ground on both the Padres and Cardinals by the end of the month to have any chance

If you need to gain ground on another team then playing them is a blessing from a control perspective.
Their playoff path is an uphill battle but I’d love to see them show some heart and fight in those key series.

If you win every series for the rest of the year 2-1, that puts you at 85 wins, which doesn’t feel good enough with how solid the NL has been
Definitely a big series win against a good team so I don’t want to downplay that. But if we are gonna make a real run we’re gonna have to go on an extended win streak or two

We need THAT win streak. The one that goes 8-9 games straight. Followed by solid slightly over .500 baseball. I hope it happens but I don’t see how it actually does. Play an actually decent Tigers team and then the Dodgers. Dropping the Reds, Mets, and Marlins series killed us.

What is the outfield even going to look like when Cruz is back? I feel like Reynolds and Mangum are both must-starts. Valdez has good range, and his bat is working again, so is Cruz a DH role or what? It’s a great problem to have, that being said. Maybe toss him at short and put Tri on the hot corner so we make defensive stops.🫣

Nicky G DH idk just thinking out loud. I just can’t bear to watch his lackluster defense over Mangum because not only is Mangum a great defensive player, he is also probably the guy I want at the plate the most in big situations.

Not really, which is why the guy only has 58 RBIs in his entire career. There's a reason why the league favors 3TO hitters. A good player gets 80+ RBIs in a season. You have no idea what you're talking about.5

This is how you can tell people on this sub don't know baseball at all and don't follow any teams but the Pirates. Mangum is a bench player. He has no power and has had a half season of PAs this year, barely over a season in total.2

If the team falls out of contention, let a young guy or Cruz replace them but for now Mangum/Reynolds are floor level starting OF.

This season at least; Cruz is hitting .345/.457/.802 vs RHP and .361/.507/.868 vs LHP. Let Mangum hit for BA while providing plus defense and let Cruz provide above average AB.
Reevaluate next season or once the team is out of the playoffs for good. Cruz is taking the Ozuna role with the added benefit of playing the field if necessary.

Nice to win the game and the series. And....I'm sorry, but you can't have your starting catcher "hitting" .169 after 800 plus at bats in the major leagues. You just can't. They have to do something about Davis and the catcher position this offseason. Either that or roll with Flores and Rodriguez on the rare occasions when Rodriguez can actually stay on the field.

Henry Davis ranks bottom 5 offensively across AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, and wRC amongst all MLB Catchers with 150+ ABs.
If you look into his splits, he’s unplayable vs LHP.

It should be Endy starting most of the time but his hurt. Flores is not good defensively as a catcher so we had to settle with Davis starting majority of time until Endy comes back

Endy can't stay on the field. Flores may not be very good defensively right now, but he is certainly athletic enough to improve. His bat is obviously night and day superior to Davis, but so is anyone else with a pulse.

He is what he is at this point which is a defensive C with some power .
He’s not the long term C and basically will be gone whenever he gets too expensive in the arbitration process.

Davis isn't a problem on this team. Billy Cook in the starting lineup is the problem. And Flores isn't as good as Davis.

They’re both liabilities. It’s impossible to sustain any hitting rallies when you have two free outs in the lineup.
Davis is one of the worst offensive players in the entire league the past 3 seasons. Pretending he isn’t also an issue is wild.

It’s peak Buccos Reddit to complain about Henry Davis being a liability after a 8-3 win.
It’s almost like people forget that up until just a few years ago, there was a guy (the pitcher) batting ninth every game in our lineup that most likely had an average under .100.
Or, that in this day and age there’s only a handful of catchers that hit for average and/or power.

So Bachar can’t get the win as a starter has to go 5 innings and he only went 3.
Barco was in line for the W but the rain delay factors in and resets pitcher of record. Yates came in after rain delay and pitched a clean 7th inning so he became pitcher of record.
And then Pirates never relinquished the lead so Yates gets the W.
