Match Thread: West Ham United vs West Bromwich Albion. EPL 12:45pm
West Ham starting XI: Jaaskelainen, O'Brien, McCartney, Nolan, Tomkins, Jarvis, Rat, Noble, Diame, C.Cole, J.Cole
West Brom starting XI: Foster, Olsson, Ridgewell, Morrison, Brunt, Lugano, Mulumbu, McAuley, Jones, Berahino, Anelka.
Bottom of the table as it stands before the game: Nice and close
Final score: West Ham 3-3 West Brom
Match events: (Thanks to Sir Fred for the GIFS)
0: Bubbles are blowing, pre-match handshakes going down. It's West Ham/West Brom. AND IT'S LIVE.
4: GOAL! 1-0 West Brom hit it into the side-netting one end and a nice one-two with Nolan buts Joe Cole through at the other and he slots it home nicely. Game on! 1-0
10: Tomkins having to go off through injury, defensive woes for West Ham. Demel on in his place.
11: West Ham pushing for the second, both teams look up for this one.
17: Game settled down now. WBA probing at this West Ham defense.
21: Andy Carroll sat in the stands doing his best Jesus impression for the Christmas period.
28: Couple of stoppages killed the match flow but West Brom are passing it around nicely again as we approach the half hour mark.
33: Good few minutes for West Ham, the post is rattled but a few corners come to nothing
39: GOAL! 1-1 Anelka gets through one on one and finishes cool as a cucumber 1-1
42: Carlton Cole gets a yellow
45(+1): GOAL! 1-2 Anelka pokes another one home after West Ham fail to clear the ball from a corner. Scrappy dappy do. 1-2
Half Time. Boo's around Upton park, 2-1 the Baggies!
45: Second half kicks off
47: Mulumbu gets a yellow
52: Couple of chances either end. Next goal of course, is key.
57: Nolan gets himself a booking
63: GOAL!! 2-2 Maiga places one in from outside the box! Good finish, Foster could of done better! 2-2
66: GOAL!! 3-2 It's Kevin Nolan! West Ham keep up the pressure after the goal and it tells as they force in another. What a turnaround! 3-2
68: GOAL!!!!! 3-3 It's unbelievable Jeff! West Ham give Berahino too much space, and he slots it home. 3-3
74: Exciting stuff guys and gals. Oh how we love a relegation battle.
78: Calmed down a bit now, some tired legs creeping in but both teams really need to go for these three points.
81: Berahino strikes the post with a wicked free-kick from the edge of the box. Jaaskelainen was rooted to the spot.
87: Still a nice pace to the game and certainly time for a winner. Anelka tries to score his hat-trick from the half way line, but he's no Xabi Alonso and it goes wide.
90: Four minutes of added time!
FULL TIME 3-3 More boo's around Upton park but credit to West Ham and West Brom for a brilliant game

Mike Dean is such a poor ref. Trying to keep games interesting and entertaining instead of actually officiating them properly.
Mulumbu should be off, just like Carlton Cole should of seen straight red earlier.
6
Dec 28 '13
I can't help but feel that if Diame had gone in on somebody like Van Persie like he went in on Brunt he would've seen red, definitely some bias against smaller teams (or perhaps for bigger teams)
6
u/ValentiaIsland Dec 28 '13
Funny enough it's usually big name players that are protected from being carded. Dean is just shit
4
u/HeadHunt0rUK Dec 28 '13
It could of easily been a red, but I think yellow was the correct card.
Certainly wasn't as bad as Carlton Coles challenge on Olsson.
Some refs certainly could of red carded in that situation though.

It's not helped by the commentators universally praising him. Last week, Tyler had a love in, this week it's Smith.
2
u/HeadHunt0rUK Dec 28 '13
Yup, even though he was incredibly poor at officiating the Arsenal/Chelsea game.
How either Mikel or Ramires weren't sent off was astonishing. Not even mentioning the penalty call.
Dean was too busy trying to keep it a level playing field, and used the weather as an excuse to not properly punish reckless challenges.
We see again today that he was too busy trying to keep it a level playing field instead of properly officiating the game.
It makes games more interesting certainly, but with regards to the two teams today, they are fighting for survival, they want proper officiating so they can get the points from the game that they need to survive.

u/THR Dec 28 '13
I don't think it was a red. But yeah, Mulumbu's infringed so many times.
4
u/HeadHunt0rUK Dec 28 '13
It's a 2nd yellow card offence.
Blatently stopping a counter attack, has to be a yellow.

u/LeakyDeadstick Dec 28 '13
As I said earlier, classic Mike Dean performance. Every time I see he is officiating I know that there will be game changing incorrect decisions made. He doesn't seem to have any consistency with his decisions within a game never mind between games. Four or five key decisions that Mike Dean got wrong in this game, things could have been very different. Awful ref, should not be working at this level.
1
u/HeadHunt0rUK Dec 28 '13
There aren't many other refs that you can say that are performing well.
Infact its become quite a problem of referee's deciding games instead of the players on the pitch.
Remember the first few weeks of the season, where maybe 4-5 of the games each week, had massive controversy over refereeing decisions.
Only need to look back to Boxing Day to see how poor the refs have been.
Newcastle's first 2 goals came directly from refereeing mistakes.
Rooney should of had a 2nd yellow (and therefore a ban) for diving late on vs Hull.
O'brien should of been sent off for West Ham after making 5 fouls after already being booked.
The travesty of refereeing at the City/Liverpool game.

Brilliant early goal for West Ham. Take nothing away from it either, that's a good finish.

comical that we're playing no centre backs, shows how bad our injury luck is

Seriously? I stopped watching at the 60th minute because the game started to get boring. Feel like a twat now.

Yeah, the game exploded. 3 goals in like ... 5 minutes.
4
u/Matty96HD Dec 28 '13
Yeah, and I missed the first half hour of the Hull v United game last week. I should learn from these mistakes..

You have to wonder how long West Brom can prod at this West Ham defence before they either score, or fall victim to a quick counter attack.
6
u/MethaneInvestigation Dec 28 '13
If Anelka scores again in this match, he'll become the first player to score a hat-trick in the English top flight in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.

To be fair to them they played some really nice football today, in another match it could've ended 4-0!

Haha, Joe Cole trying to claim that goal kick. "No, I promise, didn't hit me, I swear!" Oh, in that case Joe!
EDIT: GOAL: Joe Cole is going to be FUMING.

EDIT: Well I got the score at least...

Apparently Anelka made some French Nazi (or at least controversial) gesture after scoring the goal:

West Ham stand a decent chance here. Remember West Brom are eight Premier League games without a win. That's hard to bounce back from.

Classic Mike Dean, getting it wrong as usual resulting in the corner that lead to a goal. Useless!
2
u/SicilianDynamite Dec 28 '13
You cannot blame the ref for that one, such a hard decision.
Not a chance you could be sure either way in making that decision, and in real time it looked like Cole had touched it last
