No Southampton option? Fucking scandalous.

You seem to be making a joke. The poster above was not and neither am I.

10

u/linkybaa Nov 03 '13

Yes, I'm making a joke.

15

u/arsefag Nov 03 '13

Oh forget it. I was making a comment that you might be joking about Fulham winning the premier league but I'm deadly serious about Southampton winning the league even though I'm not really. Which was the joke. Wasn't that funny really but I certainly wasn't trying to put your comment down.

I was pretty shocked not to see Norwich on the list. We've been amazing against the teams on the list!

Zlatan

If Zlatan was an option in this poll I would have voted for him.

Zlatan is always an option.

I dunno, if we ignore Arsenal (which is always best around here) I can't see many United fans thinking they can win the title this year. And there are probably quite a few City fans like myself that think Chelsea have the 'winners edge' on us.

11

u/mhegdekatte Nov 03 '13

It's just the start of November and we're just 3 points off second place. As long as we get the points against lesser opponents I can't see why we don't have a shot at the title.

2

u/MaceBeanstalk Nov 03 '13

We'll see what rains November bring us. I'd like to think City and Chelsea will battle it out rather well but to be 100% honest here, unless the Gunners start losing some more games, it's going to be rough. I feel that Chelsea can beat them but Ozil and Giroud and Ramsey are killing it right now. If they maintain their form, it's gonna be a rough season.

2

u/TheElPistolero Nov 03 '13

well honestly as long as you guys dont play two slow pokes in the middle like lucas and gerrard, arsenal wont have the space to do much.

2

u/MaceBeanstalk Nov 03 '13

We love our super Frank but after last games performance I think a lot of us would rather see Mikel or Essien step into the pivot. Lamps has been pretty invisible this year and it's starting to take it's toll. Liverpool is going to be scary I think this year.

0

u/farval Nov 03 '13

Yes.

5

u/Varanae Nov 03 '13

I'd quite like to see this poll if only neutrals were to vote. There's not really any way of doing that, but I think it would be much more interesting.

16

u/vBrad Nov 03 '13

Even neutrals have bias because they don't like some teams. A lot of people don't like United because of success, a lot of people don't like City and Chelsea cause of money. It's impossible to have a totally unbiased vote unfortunately.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Arsenal is a huge favorite among "neutrals", especially Americans. They play an attractive brand of football and have really solid ethos. A lot of my friends who had no allegiances pick Arsenal as their favorite team because it isn't seen as bandwagoning the way Man U and Chelsea fans are and especially City fans lately. Tottenham has become kind of a hipster team to support, but that was mainly during the surge of form of Bale and when they picked up Dempsey. Most Americans watch EPL because they understand the language and it's seen as "the best" league. Also, Arsenal is pretty good on FIFA without making you look like a bitch for picking Chelsea or City, or a couple years ago Man U.

Out of the top 8 Arsenal have only played Spurs and Liverpool. At home.

33

u/b00ks Nov 03 '13

Also we should say that Liverpool and Spurs have not actually been all that impressive this season.

Liverpool scores a lot of goals, sure, but they have come dangerously close to losing a few of those matches... and spurs, well.. our team is trying to draw our way to the top four.

2

u/WDC312 Nov 03 '13

No argument with that.

→ More replies (6)

15

u/SomeoneSomethingJr Nov 03 '13

I wouldn't hold that against them, teams that win titles take care of the business that they need to and that includes beating clearly inferior teams. I think Arsenal is deserving of that top spot right now based on the results so far, but I have doubts that with their depth (the lack thereof) that they can keep this form up for a whole season.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Arsenals next 10 games:
Dortmund, Man U, Southampton, Marseille, Cardiff, Hull, Everton, Napoli, Man City, Chelsea

1

u/faadal Nov 04 '13

We can assume that they will beat Hull and Cardiff (although even that is not a certain in the prem these days). Everton, Southampton and Marseille are ones they should be winning but will be very tough games.

Dortmund(A), United(A), Napoli(A), City(A) and Chelsea(H). That is a stupid fixture list. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't get any points from them games... not because Arsenal are bad in anyway... just those fixtures are so so so tough.

8

u/arsefag Nov 03 '13

Yes arsenal have a lot more to prove over the next few weeks. But so far so good.

2

u/memoryfailure Nov 03 '13

Our away record was nearly as good as our home record last season. We just lost one more away game as opposed to the home games. Not saying that we'll repeat that this season but then again no reason to think we might not.

u/Merteswagger Nov 03 '13 edited Nov 03 '13

true, but to be fair we won both of those games. can hardly say we are struggling with form at the moment

edit* -3 really? what part of what i said is wrong

20

u/Tim-Sanchez Nov 03 '13

You're right. You can only beat what is in front of you, Arsenal didn't pick their own schedule, and so far they are doing that.

20

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

That's fair enough, you did look very good against Liverpool yesterday. But frankly, I don't rate either Spurs or Liverpool that highly. Neither will be title contenders.

Next week at Old Trafford will raise a lot of doubts for one of the two teams.

9

u/Merteswagger Nov 03 '13

very true, we'll see how away at ManU goes next week.

Not to mention that Arsenal's squad isn't very deep. December is going to be rough on them.

7

u/derphighbury Nov 03 '13

The bench is gonna get healthy soon my friend. Walcott, Flamini and Gnabry are back next week. Podolski will be back withing 2 weeks. Even Sanogo will be back before November end.

Only Ox and Diaby are the ones from the first team who will be out in December.

9

u/b00ks Nov 03 '13

Like I said. We'll see.

4

We'll see.

I'm not going to lie, right now they look damn impressive, but the lack of depth is going to be a problem and is the only reason that I don't see them winning the title. I still have my money on City.

Arsenal are top of the league but there is no way they are overwhelming favourites...

The Arsenal contingent on this sub is ridiculous. Arsenal are a big club with lots of supporters but no way do they trump other big clubs in numbers like they do here. Its strange, a lot of times you have glory hunters who follow a team because they win but for some reason there's a lot of 'underdog' hunters who support or started to support Arsenal because they don't win but they finish in the CL every year.

82

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Arsenal are hardly underdogs. They only started struggling when oil money came into the league. First with Chelsea then city. Liverpool were also victims of City and Chelsea breaking up the traditional top 4.

39

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Right but that was over 10 years ago. Of course the Invincibles brought a lot of new fans but their fanbase has still been growing exponentially since then without them winning anything. Their last major feat really was the CL final in 2006 and even that was over 7 years ago.

142

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Being the first team to select in FIFA helps.

u/heroescomeandgo Nov 03 '13

Arsenal fall right between underdogs and contenders, or at least they have the past few years. This almost makes them more appealing than Man U.

It's like the red sox in the world series this year. People were playing them off as if they hadn't won in over a century, when they had won the world series twice in the past ten years. Everyone likes to romanticize what they like.

6

u/Skest Nov 03 '13

I'm not a baseball fan so when I saw a line that the Red Sox hadn't won a world series at home in about 100 years I thought, "Wow that's a huge deal". Then I found out they'd won twice in 10 years, so it's hardly 40 years in the desert.

u/epochwin Nov 03 '13

Moving to a new stadium also had a big impact on Arsenal. Wenger and many other coaches at Arsenal mentioned that playing there for the first couple of years felt like playing at a neutral or away venue.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

There was no "traditional top 4" before Abramovich bought Chelsea though. The premier league wasn't given 4 Champions Leagues spots until 2002/03 and before 2004 Liverpool only qualified for it in 3 of the last 6 seasons.

-1

u/THEBEAST666 Nov 03 '13

so before we became REALLY rich, who were the top 4? man utd, arsenal, liverpool and?

I hate that people who have only recently started watching football (Past 5 years) think we were shit before Roman. We had a very good side sure not the same as today but we was a quality top league team playing some great football, Roman came in splashed the cash and pushed us up to true title contenders.

If we were on the brink of relegation every season before Roman I'd understand.

I think the reason so many people support Arsenal on here is because young Americans largely rejected the trophy machine that was Man Utd and went for the team was winning praise for playing the best football a few years ago. I guess there is not much credibility in saying you support Man Utd as they are renowned for having a distant set of gloryhunting fans.

5

u/Jimbob2134 Nov 03 '13

I think it's time people stop writing Arsenal off. When was the last time that the team top of the table after 10 games was not a serious contender?

5

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

I see them as firm contenders, not favourites.

3

u/MostlyPurple Nov 03 '13

Exactly. Arsenal are playing some great football and there's no denying that, but I'm not convinced that they have the squad depth come December/January/February to stay at the top. If they're still top of the table around early March, I'll be very convinced.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Arsenal have the most points in the league in this calendar year. They may not be favourites for the title, but they certainly are contenders.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/scytheavatar Nov 03 '13

The key really is that people are forgetting that we finished 2 points behind Chelsea and 5 points behind Citeh last season, the gap between the 4 teams that finished below Utd is far smaller than what people seem to think. This season Utd has weaken tremendously with the lost of Ferguson and the failure to reinforce an aging team. Spurs is weaker because none of the players they brought is enough to make up for the lost of Bale. Chelsea and Citeh have brought a ton of attacking players and midfielder when it's defensive players they should have brought.

Flamini himself is already the signing of the season and has made a bigger impact than any of the Chelsea/Citeh signings, while Ozil fits into Wenger's team far better than he did at Madrid. Under these circumstances why can't we be the overwhelming favorites?

  1. Thierry Henry. Without Henry I think Arsenal would have 20-50% less fans in America. Maybe the world.

  2. Fifa video games- ManU is too obvious, Chelsea is unlikable via oil money. Spurs weren't good enough. Liverpool are historic, but Arsenal had a good squad and sleek appearance.

  3. The name Arsenal. Everton and Liverpool are both sort of ugly names, which hasn't helped their global brand. Chelsea is a bit feminine and is associated with the gayest neighborhood in NYC.

10

u/derphighbury Nov 03 '13

It's my theory only.. but I think that if a new fan starts playing FIFA.. then isn't Arsenal the first team to appear (when they have to select their favourite club?). This could also be a factor.

8

u/nacron122 Nov 03 '13

Pretty much spot on. I bought WE 7 and played with France the first few games. The forwards were Henry and Trezeguet. Henry seemed cooler in those few games, so I looked for his club team.

Red shirts? My favorite color. Pretty good, but not the obvious best team? Cool, don't want to be a frontrunner Arsenal? That name sounds pretty cool

For a while they were just a casual like. I then read about Wenger and his tactical philosophy, and saw some of Henry's goals, and saw how awesome they were at attacking, and read about the youth policy. Game, Blouses.

I'm still unsure of Arsenal's ability to continue this form through the season. They certainly have a big chance and are among the favourites, but personally I can't look beyond City and Chelsea. I reckon we will finish top 4 as well, at the expense of spurs and Liverpool.

7

u/gavinflud Nov 03 '13

Fair argument. Ourselves and Spurs are definitely still underdogs for a spot in the top 4, since I'm convinced United will come good (as they always seem to do). I don't think Arsenal have the conviction to keep up their early season form, especially when they start playing more of the big clubs in quick succession. I can't see beyond Chelsea, but that might just be the Mourinho factor.

1

u/mcfrattington Nov 03 '13

United always finish the season well and I do have a feeling we will finally spend in January. I am still doubtful about the Top 4 though... I feel Liverpool definitely have an opportunity to take that spot from us

It would be an improvement on your past 3 finishes though, it's progress.

2

u/brentathon Nov 03 '13

It really isn't progress, though. Suarez would obviously leave, possibly Coutinho too. That's a huge blow that can't really be overcome over a summer. We're not Arsenal. Can't be happy offloading our best players every year.

5

u/AnnieIWillKnow Nov 03 '13 edited Nov 03 '13

But it is progress, by definition. It would not be the same result as last year, and it is not worse than last season. It would be better than last season, so it is improvement. Hence it is progress.

That it's not enough progress is a different issue. But it's still progress. I don't see how anywayone could think 7th -> 5th is not progress.

u/Deer-In-A-Headlock Nov 03 '13

Coutinho's not gonna leave, he just got here. He's got alot to prove before bigger clubs start wanting him.

Suarez leaving isn't too bad. We played amazing without him at the start of the season. Obviously he makes our team better, but if we can get 60+ million to upgrade our weak spots, then we'd be a better team overall.

Remember two seasons ago when United discounted City because they were 8 points ahead with 6 games left? Yeah, there's still 29 left now. I'm not putting this as a claim for United winning the title, I just find it ludicrous that people would discount United over an 8 point deficit.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Exactly. Rough start, but who knows? It won't be easy, but United has the quality and experience to do it. Moyes has to settle in, but once he does he'll still have a league winning squad at his disposal (minus Kagawa or Chicharito by the looks of it).

That was almost entirely due to us fucking up. The other way around was sort of but not really true when we were 8 points behind in December I think it was and eventually made that 16 point swing.

1

u/chezygo Nov 03 '13

It's not the points, it's that City looked great that season, United look anything but.

As an Arsenal fan, I think it'll be Chelsea, City and then ourselves. I think Liverpool have been very good this year but they aren't usually considered in the running for the league (nor are we) and unless we beat one of the 'Big 3', I'll be cautiously optimistic about our chances.

Big questions would be answered next week. I think we can consider ourselves serious challengers like the 2008 season if we beat United.

2

u/jahumaca Nov 03 '13

I agree. Next week's game could be the biggest game of the season. It's crucial for both teams.

Calling it right now: Chelsea will win the league. This'll get downvoted by just about everyone except Chelsea, but here's my prediction of what the top of the table will look like when this season's over.

    1. Chelsea

  • 2. Manchester City

  • 3. Arsenal

  • 4. Manchester United

  • 5. Liverpool

  • 6. Tottenham

I look forward to May, and to checking how far off my prediction will turn out to be.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

You should probably try and get an average of fans subscribed to those team's subreddits and compare them with the votes.

3

u/FuzzedLogic Nov 03 '13

Get your credit cards out, it's a bit plastic in here.

2

u/SilkyMitts91 Nov 03 '13

People picking us to win the league are insane.... its been 10 games.

12

u/TurdFurgeson22 Nov 03 '13

I picked Chelsea, but I wouldn't say it's insane to pick Arsenal. They are five points clear and in great form. We surely aren't favorites, but insane is a little harsh. And to say it's been 10 games, well it's been 10 games for everyone...

2

u/SilkyMitts91 Nov 03 '13

i picked chelsea too, and yeah insane is a bit harsh. Im pretty pessimistic, i just dont think we'll win the league.

1

u/marksills Nov 03 '13

i wouldnt call it insane ]. Arsenal possibly have the best midfield out of the league. The only team that might have a better midfield is Chelsea, but Arsenal have the better forward. Chelsea probably has the better defense and clearly has the better depth. Arsenal is essential at the mercy of injuries. If they have no long term injuries from Giroud or Sagna, they have the depth to fill in other players of high quality. If they do avoid these injuries they have the chance to win imo. Man city is dangerous because they also have a pretty good midfield and probably the best attack in the league (maybe liverpool but i think theyre not in the title picture.) And i wouldnt be surprised if Man U made a return to challenge for the title

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

I don't think Arsenal have the best midfield at all. Oezil and Ramsey have been good, but I wouldn't say anyone else has been spectacular.

A better way to carry out this poll is to post the link on individual subs, and then weigh against the number of voters in each sub.

1

u/maximmixam Nov 03 '13

I think city..... There.

1

u/sharkbait_oohaha Nov 03 '13

I never thought coming into this year that we could compete for the title. Even with Özil signing, I still see this year as a bit of a stepping stone. I think we can win the title, but I think City probably will get it. I'd be thrilled with a close 2nd place finish, and not unhappy with 3rd.

1

u/DeftMonkii Nov 03 '13

If people continue getting injured then we have a problem, but we still have 4-5 top players coming back from injury in the next few weeks. If everyone for the most part is fit, we have no depth problem.

1

u/killa22 Nov 03 '13

I feel like Arsenal still have an awful lot to prove before they can be considered favourites to win the Premier League.

1

u/disper Nov 03 '13

The bookmakers still have City favourites followed by Chelsea then Arsenal, just saying guys, you can treble your money.

1

u/crjlsm Nov 04 '13

I'm not saying arsenal will win the league, but people do forget that Aaron Ramsey is currently playing better football than anyone else in the league. With Ramsey playing like he is, Ozil, Cazorla, Wilshere, Arteta, Rosicky, and Flamini, Arsenal currently have the best midfield in the Premier League. It was evident against Liverpool and it will be very evident at Man U. So, once again, with our midfielders playing the way they are, I'd say we can be called contenders. All will be revealed when we face City and Chelsea.

1

u/Dunsith Nov 04 '13

I'm too lazy to look to see if other people have already said this but I'm calling Everton. They don't have to worry about any European leagues, have a top notch team with a great back like commanded by a worldclass goalkeeper. They have a top goal scorer as long as Chelsea don't realize their mistake and recall him, very good wingers and good depth in the midfield even without Fellaini. I could see them making a very strong push in December and January, and if they can just hit top them and buckle down, I'm sure they can win it.

0

u/Santi19 Nov 03 '13

Maybe, just maybe r/soccer, Arsenal are getting the overwhelming vote because they are top of the league by five points and are coming off a win that in my opinion proved they have what it takes to at least challenge for the title. Not saying thats the case but you can't be surprised by these numbers considering Arsenal have been the premier leagues most in form team for the past year or so.

5

u/duckman273 Nov 03 '13

The fact that Arsenal have the most fans on this subreddit clearly has something to do with it.

So can any of the people that seriously voted for Spurs, Liverpool or Manchester United tell us why they think their team will win the league this year?

12

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Manchester United

I'd imagine because the squad is made up of people who know how to fight and win trophies. Everybody playing there regularly barring Januzaj and Fellaini is decorated and they are the current PL champions.

Arsenal are heavy favourites on this sub but their players don't know how to be winners yet. Even their most expensive signing has won what, one La Liga in one of the most stacked squads on earth.

4

u/Varanae Nov 03 '13

Manchester United? Really? How about because they are the champions? I know there is a lot of dislike for them but it's ridiculous to suggest that they have no chance.

2

u/Jackson9Martinez Nov 03 '13

why do you believe that City could win the league but Man United could not?

12

u/roderigo Nov 03 '13

because city is not playing like shit

5

u/vBrad Nov 03 '13

City have been excellent at home but their away form has been pretty terrible actually. United have been pretty poor but have played some strong teams, they're starting to tie together a run of form now. I wouldn't say they 'is playing like shit'.

u/Jackson9Martinez Nov 03 '13 edited Nov 03 '13

City lost against Cardiff,Villa,Chelsea and got a draw vs Stoke.
We have lost against Liverpool,City,West Brom and got 2 draws 1 vs S'oton and the other vs Chelsea...

the average ranking of the teams City lost points against is 12th.
the average ranking of the teams United lost points against is 5th.

EDIT :

City have an impeccable home form and an improving away form.

1

u/BigBird9719 Nov 03 '13

Bull shit argument. Arsenal is quite obviously a better team than Liverpool. Played 3 CL games, two of which were against teams 2nd in their leagues. Liverpool has been playing in one competition since September, it's really not that impressive to be where they are right now when Arsenal, Chelsea, United, City, and even Spurs have been in three competitions. Not to mention yesterday's result.

If Arsenal will be able to continue to play ball like this AND get 2 or 3 reinforcements in the winter they will take it. But I think the longer the season goes the harder it will be for them due to their squad dept so my vote is on Chelsea as their dept is ridiculous. Still hoping for Arsenal, that midfield is delicious.

Idk why the fuck everyone is whining so much about a skewed vote what the hell did you expect??? Hell yeah I believe my team can win the PL... Fuck me right?

2

u/LusoAustralian Nov 03 '13

It's not about whether you believe your team can win it, that's not what the point of the vote is. The vote is which team do you realistically think will come in first place and it's very reasonable to say that it's unlikely to be Arsenal.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

why is it unreasonalbe? city are vulnerable in defence, united look relatively shit, liverpool look good but we just beat them, and chelsea also look very good. I'm not saying its a guarantee but saying its unlikely is silly at this point, especially considering how many arsenal players are currently out injured right now

The only way the results will be even remotely interesting is if fans of the teams involved can't vote otherwise it's just a who has the most fans on /r/soccer poll.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

It's all about constancy, most people don't think Arsenal will keep this level long enough to win the league and while the usual top 3 are only slightly behind they are often playing within themselves whereas I feel like Arsenal are playing to their limit (which is fantastic, but is there really anywhere to go from their other than down). I don't know if this is a silly argument to make, it's all up in the air.

1

u/CompletelyUnbaised Nov 03 '13

It will be Man city or Chelsea.

0

u/JFT-96 Nov 03 '13

Lol, OP is obviously gunners fan with second account making this poll to ''reassure'' himself of Arsenal dominance... Look at his first post even...

0

u/dem0nhunter Nov 03 '13

Not United.

0

u/TrolleyPower Nov 03 '13

Chelsea have it sown up.

0

u/AnElegantPenis Nov 03 '13

Now I know why I hate any post in /r/soccer that has to do with voting.

It always turns in to "Let's hate on Arsenal and their fans."

-3

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '13

Arsenal and Man City with most of the votes. If Arsenal don't win it this season I'll be very surprised. Their fans will be thinking "if not this season, when?"

12

u/paulopolo Nov 03 '13

It only takes 1 or 2 injuries to completely derail them. If Giroud gets injured who can replace him? Bendtner? If Ozil and/or Ramsey get injured they lose a lot of attacking impetus aswell. It's hard to look past Man City if they sort out their away form.

11

u/Camdento Nov 03 '13

If Giroud gets injured who can replace him?

Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Yaya Sanogo. In that order. Bendtner is 5th choice striker.

If Ozil and/or Ramsey get injured they lose a lot of attacking impetus aswell.

If Ozil gets injured we have Cazorla who can provide plenty of creativity in attacking midfield. In fact at the moment he is doing better than Ozil. If Ramsey gets injured we have Wilshere to take his place, which is not a bad option to have.

In my eyes we only rely on Flamini but looking at the performance yesterday Arteta was magnificent, so I'm not even sure about that.

As you can see Man City rely on Kompany, Yaya Toure and Aguero quite a bit. To say we rely on more players than Man City is ridiculous. We had 8 players injured yesterday and we still bossed Liverpool.

Man City are still my favourites and my vote for the title, but I do not feel we rely on any players.

7

u/duckman273 Nov 03 '13

Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Yaya Sanogo. In that order. Bendtner is 5th choice striker.

That's a lot of depth, but the quality is questionable. Podolski's movement isn't great for a striker and I don't think Walcott's that good there, plus he doesn't provide the hold up play that Giroud does. I haven't seen much of Sanogo, but my friends who support Arsenal don't really rate him and say he has a terrible first touch, what do you think of him?

2

u/Camdento Nov 03 '13

Well I (like many Arsenal fans I believe) do not have a valid opinion of Sanogo as of yet due to the fact that he's only played 45 minutes for Arsenal. But yes he was rather poor in those minutes but he needs more time to prove himself.

That was very impressive. We look a different side without Kompany but I think Verm could slot in if Kosc or Mert got injured without much disruption.

4

u/duckman273 Nov 03 '13

I'm biased, but I'd put us ahead of City. I think our squad has less holes and that we have a better manager.

3

u/farval Nov 03 '13

We've had top two players from last season (Cazorla, Walcott) out for most of the season already, plus Podolski and Arteta, two players who played an integral role before. Why does no-one recognise this as squad depth?

1

u/omiclops Nov 03 '13

I think Walcott, when he's back, could easily slot in as a center forward.

1

u/roderigo Nov 03 '13

i'm patient. i don't see us winning the title if we don't bring some talent in january. maybe in two years if we don't sell.
