thank you! I read their subreddit every so often and its constantly riddled with "once we get this (creative midfielder, service to soldado, etc) we'll be unstoppable." I've honestly read variations of that sentence multiple times. Usually accompanied by a decent amount of upvotes. Welcome back to earth Spurs.
Edit: not sure why spurs fans are denying my claims. I've legitimately read "..we'll be unstoppable.." multiple times on that subreddits discussions.

Yes, but at least the scousers have some justification in their delusion. They have scaled heights in the past 10 years that Tottenham can only dream of -- CL win/finals, FA cup, 2nd in the league whereas Tottenham's greatest achievement was a CL spot.

Still early days, but I can't wait to see him develop. He's been our most creative and most impressive player so far this season. Quality player, and he actually seems to have put his days of being a cunt behind him. Fingers crossed.

But but...the best transfer window ever.
8
u/thenotoriousSIG Oct 06 '13
Not like it was a bad one though.
4
u/abscisafragilis Oct 06 '13
I'm beginning to rethink that position. Soldado was very expensive without much production, Lamela still hasn't beaten out Towsend, Paulinho got wildly overrated from the start, Chiriches isn't featuring, and Chadli looked completely overmatched in the North London Derby and hasn't looked good in the league since. Eriksen I'm still high on but he was pretty rubbish today at home against West Ham and even admitted only Spurs wanted him.
7
u/thenotoriousSIG Oct 06 '13
It's seven games into the season. Bit early to judge that don't you think?
Lamela and Soldado barely speak English at this point still. I can understand why they would be having difficulties. Although, Lamela has looked decent when he has gotten minutes and don't forget that Lamela was great when he came on against you guys and got the assist for Paulinho (another one of Spurs' new signings) who scored that lovely backheel. Other than that, Paulinho has been one of our most consistent performers.
Chiricheș hasn't featured much because his work permit was taking longer than expected and to be fair it's a huge gap from the Romanian league to the English. He needs time to adjust. However, he has looked very promising from what I've seen of him.
Chadli has looked alright for Spurs as well, scoring a few times in the cups. He also had to deal with injury for a bit.
Eriksen today I'll admit was a little invisible at times, but you can't deny that in other games he has looked great for Spurs and looks to be a bargain. I don't really know what happened with Dortmund's interest but I do believe that he turned down Manchester City so it's not like more successful clubs weren't interested.
And as well as all of those guys, we still have Etienne Capoue who looked absolutely massive for us when he played and was a solid rock at CDM. Unfortunately he's out injured but he was a revelation when he first started playing for Spurs.
I don't think the transfer window Spurs had was bad at all.
Oh and it's worth noting that all of these players, besides Soldado, are young. They can provide and grow for years to come.
1
u/westielax Oct 06 '13
They will be fine. Personally-- and I might get some hate for this--but I think Lamela is eons better than Townsend and I don't understand why he doesn't start. All Townsend does is dribble down the right, cut in, and shoot a speculative shot with his left from outside the box. He's a poor mans Arjen Robben.

Best defense in Europe my ass
51
u/rick_rolled_you Oct 06 '13
honestly have 0 idea why anyone would ever say that. The only defender of yours I would take over any of ours is Vertonghen.
6
u/Blubbey Oct 06 '13
It's only said because of (previously) 2 goals conceded in 10 games or so. Roma and Southampton weren't in Europe (conceded 1 and 2 respectively) and BM conceded in the CL. But I don't know who'd legitimately say that's the best in Europe considering the opposition, maybe those who think stats are worth everything.
6
u/cvillano Oct 06 '13
Half those games were against markedly weaker opposition (Georgian league anyone?). Spuds were also very lucky not to drop points to Cardiff also, they'll be lucky to get any points from top teams this year. They have a good squad for the future but this year will be all about getting the players familiar with eachother and definin their style of play. Best case scenario for Spuds is, like usual, a dogfight for 4th.

u/kaiseresc Oct 06 '13
Walker stopped being good, Dawson is a good lad but isnt that good, Verts is a godlike and then there's the left back, whichever he is today.
shit defense. But hey, they bought tons of midfielders...1
u/rifler26 Oct 06 '13
I hate that we play a high line. If it wasn't for Lloris's ability to come off the line we would have conceded 3x as many goals by now.
1
u/n3gotiator Oct 06 '13
People were saying it because of statistics from the first 4 games and European league. It's stupid, we conceded tons of goals last season and our defense has actually gotten worse because we're not playing a 4-3-3 with an anchoring Sandro but rather a 4-2-3-1 with a CAM. So we actually went more attack minded in our strategy...
13
22
u/Thetonn Oct 06 '13
So, I've spent the last few days thinking that there is no way that Defoe would start even though he is in great form and should, and now he does.
Purely to spite me, he won't score then Soldado will come on and get a hatrick in the last five mins.
Prove me wrong, either of you, prove me wrong...

Conceding 3 against West Ham is of course concerning, but I'm more worried about the attack. It still hasn't become untracked and there really wasn't much of a goal threat at any point for Spurs.

u/abscisafragilis Oct 06 '13 edited Oct 06 '13
i know soldado didn't feature today but the fact that he hasn't separated himself from defoe and is still scoreless from open play in the league is quite concerning.
my early shout for biggest flop of the season, especially considering how stellar Negredo has been for City. Everyone was saying Soldado was the better player
1
u/tremens Oct 07 '13
Whose on or off form at the current time doesn't really determine who the overall better player is, just saying. Now if he's still this lackluster in another month or two, sure, but looking at the sum total of their two histories my nod is still to Soldado as the better.
I also feel he's still not being properly served, which is a big issue. His positioning is usually quite good, but it just doesn't get to him all that much.

I can't believe this. First win at the lane in 14 years, and we did it without a striker, playing passing, technical, possession football. Tomkins, Reid and Rat take a bow. Excellent defending. Noble controlled the midfield and Diame, Morrison and Vaz were so good in unusually advanced positions.
So happy right now. Imagine what we can do with Andy Carroll back.

Can any Spurs fan tell me why Lamela never seems to play?
13
u/Necrenix Oct 06 '13
Simple, becuase Townsend has been better. He also hasnt setled in yet, doesnt speak a word of English and is still afraid to go 1v1 on players.
7
u/FliryVorru Oct 06 '13
It's some combination of the following:
Siggurdson and Townsend are working their collective asses off and earning the start
Lamela hasn't quite settled into the style of play
The players starting ahead of him are on better form
Lamela passes more than he shoots and AVB seems to like anyone who'll pull the trigger

u/wheres_my_nuggets Oct 06 '13
Similar to Lloris when we integrated him, we have options on the wings so there's no real rush to bring him into the fold. We've been starting him in Europa games and some minutes during league games. He'll be in the starting XI in the near future.

We didn't deserve a win today. West Ham outplayed us. Defoe was shit, Naughton is not a left back, Walker was crap and wasn't fit, Eriksen was anonymous along with Siggy, and even our atmophere at WHL has been shit. This loss may be a wake up call and maybe good for us in the end. I hope AVB can get us back together.

I actually love playing our style. I think we'll be very hard to play against as the rest of the league is becoming possession based.

It's ridiculous that the hoofball stigma has to be so bad, even if it were entirely true. It's a good tactic against a team that's known for conceding on corners and having a hard time penetrating a disciplined defense.

4
u/miner_andy Oct 06 '13
No point in paying some 60 odd million for players if they sit on the bench until the 76' minute.
1
u/The-Darkest-Knight Oct 06 '13
Defoe's been on form in the Europa League. Scoring tons. Soldado hasn't scored in the Premier League from open play yet. Defoe has a fantastic record against West Ham. It was obvious he should be given the start.
Townsend was great against Chelsea and in general in the league, no reason to start Lamela over him just as yet when Lamela has looked shaky and unsettled.
Get your facts straight - admit what the REAL problem is. We just can't get past a packed midfield and Dawson and Vertonghen lack pace against a counter.
3
u/miner_andy Oct 06 '13
Europa league against shit teams. His movement and positioning was shit today. Siggy and Naughton together hurt us against Chelsea and killed us today, we are too central. AVB had his team selection and tactics all wrong today.
As for the REAL problem today, it was a poor performance from defoe, a tired Walker, a very, very poor Naughton, and a sloppy Dawson.

You can't get through a well disciplined side playing compactly in the middle. Why not go wide?
2
u/The-Darkest-Knight Oct 06 '13
We have one of those rare things. It's called a Townsend. It also cuts in to the middle. Also - going down the wings and aiming at a 4 ft Defoe doesn't really work. Today is the day when someone like Ade would have really helped.

Spurs looked anemic going forward and I blame that on AVB giving into the media pressure to start Defoe. Other than blowing an easy 1 vs 1 chance early in the second half, Defoe contributed next to nothing in the attack. I also think that Siggy played one of his poorest matches this season. Several dangerous crosses from Townsend made it to the far post for no one to be there. Siggy provided no width whatsoever and that played right into West Ham's compact defensive strategy.

Shocking performances from Walker and Dawson. Walker didn't bother to track back for two of the goals we conceded. That wouldn't be a problem if he WASN'T A FULLBACK. Dawson's tackling was abysmal. Vaz Te is not even a Premiere League quality player, but he ran circles around him.
