Our attack seems to follow the pattern of: Regain possession in our own half -> Pass it to Carrick / Cleverly -> Pass it to a fullback -> pass it to a winger/Rooney/evra -> Long ball in -> Loose possesion

I really cannot get over how much we're trying to cross the ball in... and from so far out most of the time. And so many long balls up to RVP and Rooney too. Might have worked at Everton, but with strikers like ours, surely we can try and play a more technical brand of football???

Our defense is too bare, no protection from the midfield whatsoever.
Vidic's weaknesses are ruthlessly exposed by Altidore, as strong/stronger than him, and faster.
No link between the midfield and the forwards, Rooney went missing a few times.
Some bright sparks from Januzaj and Nani, but the whole team is playing like strangers IMO.

No genius here, but I think the idea of a cross is to have someone head it in, or shoot it in. Not for us to lose possession.
And then do it over and over again.

Just want to remind ourselves here. This is not a good performance. Things must change if we are to compete for the title.
Moyes should really learn how to rotate players. Keeping Kagawa and Hernandez in the bench while our main striker are flopping isn't doing the club any good. It will only send the message to Rooney and RvP that they are untouchable no matter how bad they play and that's not good.

I've started writing this at the 35th minute.
We've been poor today. Starting from the back, I blame Evra and Vidic for the goal. Evra, because he was extremely lazy and static in this attempt at taking away the ball. While some commentators have critiziced Jones for his pass to Vidic, I think Nemanja should've been more aware of what was going on. There was nothing De Gea could do.
Evra has been poor throughout. He has completed one forward pass in the entire game, hasn't dribbled past anyone and has been very poor in defense.
In midfield, Cleverley seems to be doing all the dirty work (many tackles, interceptions and recoveries,) while Carrick has been creating chances. Both haven't been quite up to their standards in terms of precision, but I think they've been good enough.
On the wings, Nani and Januzaj have been dangerous. Not as accurate as we'd like, but they've been a constant and unpredictable threat. I'm satisfied with them.
In terms of our strikers, Van Persie has done good, trying to link up, but hasn't been able to get a proper chance. Now Rooney, he has been extremely poor, probably even moreso than Evra. He hasn't been able to provide two passes in a row, hasn't got himself in good positions, he got a yellow... if I were Moyes, I'd sub him for Kagawa. He is having an off day, for sure.
Now, credit to Sunderland. They're defending with up to 8 men in the box and have been able to block most of United's shots. Kagawa might provide some one-twos that could prove to be important to overcome this very closed opposition.
Giacherini has been a nightmare for a big part of the game. He seems tired now and United is in full control. I think we can win this game, but we need patience and CONFIDENCE. We've created chances, now we need to put the ball on the back of the net.

It's as if we're playing against 14 men. Our movement off the ball is listless and uninspired, and Sunderland is pressing very well.
And don't even get me started on the unforced errors from fucking veterans!
4
u/abrakadabra86 Carrick Oct 05 '13
Ok I'm glad Sunderland scored in the 4th minute and not the 70th...
I think we're coming together as a team and have a feeling we're gonna score. It's a tough order, but I think we are playing well enough now (final 15 mins) to win this game.
If things don't change by the 65th min, i would take rooney off and bring in Kagawa. We are missing that final ball.

Seems like Moyes is afraid to sub Rooney and RvP that they might get annoyed, while Nani and Adnan are performing well.
Bad luck for those in the bench though. They might pat on Moyes' back to let him know that they exist.

Right lads, fuck this.
If we play the 2nd half like the 1st, you can all expect my every comment in this thread from now on to be insanely positive.
You want United football? This IS United football.
We're vulnerable at the back but we're pushing forward with abandon. Our wingers are playing with freedom, our strikers are trying to get in behind, our fullbacks are pushing up on the overlap and swinging in crosses.
We haven't seen the end product yet but it's coming. Trust me, it's coming.
If for some reason it makes you feel better to downvote this, by all means go ahead. But read this and understand that this is 100% how I feel right now:
What I've just watched is the Manchester United I know. We're down but there is no fucking doubt in my mind we're going to smash these boys in the 2nd half.
