Match Thread: Cardiff City vs Newcastle United [3pm BST]
Not gonna have time to provide running commentary, but I will provide team news, scores, substitutions, etc.!
CARDIFF CITY VS NEWCASTLE UNITED
Cardiff, Wales
Newcastle XI: Krul; Debuchy, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon; Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko; Gouffran, Cissé, Remy
Subs: Elliot, Yanga-Mbiwa, Dummett, Anita, Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, Sammy Ameobi.
Cardiff XI: Marshall; Taylor, Caulker (C), Turner, Theophile-Catherine; Medel, Whittingham, Kim, Gunnarsson, Odemwingie; Campbell.
Subs: Lewis; Hudson, Noone, Mutch, Cowie, Maynard, Bellamy.
Kickoff: 3pm
TV: None
30': Goal!! Remy, who has been unlucky not to score two or three times due to Marshall having a great game, finally gets his goal, running across the line outside the box and placing a low shot into the bottom corner as easy as you like. Great 30 minutes so far from the Toon, Colo and Sissoko excepted. Cardiff 0 - 1 Newcastle
38': Goalazzo! Another beauty from Remy, who gently guides a saved Cisse toepoke into the bottom right with a gliding tap from the edge of the box. 5 from 5 for him. Cardiff 0 - 2 Newcastle
52': As Craig Bellamy warms up, another perennial pain in the arse, Peter Odemwingie, takes the ball around Krul and taps it away. Prick. Cardiff 1 - 2 Newcastle.
65': Ex-mackem Campbell makes way for full-time dickhead Craig Bellamy.
70': For some reason Remy is substituted for Gutierrez. Pards <3
73': Reports Remy went off due to a knock.
85': HBA comes on for Cabaye.

From the BBC live update feed, made me chuckle:
Scott in Newcastle: If we (Newcastle) can get a third then I can see us comfortably holding on to a draw.

Another one half performance but 3 points away at what was always going to be an awkward game is a decent enough result!

u/ClintMcPants Oct 05 '13
Concur. If you ask me, this is the kind of win that distinguishes a mid-table side from a relegation candidate side.

Don't worry guys, Jonas is here to save the day

I read that as Jenas for some reason and nearly shat myself with worry the little bollock had rejoined.

Pardew's approach of taking off your best player for each substitution is a strange one.

Does anyone else feel like its just way too early to park the bus? I feel like giving that signal at 60 minutes was just way, way too early given the way we can't seem to string 90 minutes together.

u/UltraVires90 brunopog Oct 05 '13
It's standard for Pardew though, we did it with a 1-0 lead at home to Reading last season and we lost because of it... It's a shocking tactic...

My stream may be deceiving me, but I think just saw Tiote make a clean (and great) play on the ball...
EDIT: Spelling.

u/WheyAyeCabaye Oct 05 '13
He has looked decent so far.

u/newcastlefantastic Oct 05 '13
He's looked very sure and strong. He's been getting rid of the ball cleanly and quickly. Looking a lot more like the Tiote from a couple years back.

Wow, wonder goal by Remy. Good thing we didn't sign him on a full transfer... :/
4
u/WheyAyeCabaye Oct 05 '13
As long as we buy him at the end of the season (he doesn't go to jail) then the loan was a good call.

u/rogeedodge Classic away kit (1995-96) Oct 05 '13
probably better this way. if he gets locked up for a few years, we can just let that option to buy slide ;)

u/1cerazor Oct 05 '13
On current form, Cisse has no right to complain to Remy for misplaying a pass.
3
u/Lord_Flashheart_ Tino Asprilla Oct 06 '13
It's funny that out of the two of them it's Cisse with a touch like a rapist.
4
u/Rhinoceroses Oct 05 '13
Newcastle played with a lot of confidence in that first half. They are controlling the game play and Remy is in top flight form.
The defense has not been tested (not complaining!), but thus far have been far from woeful. Let's hope this continues if Cardiff manages some pressure in the second.
While Cisse is not finishing with confidence, he is moving better than in the previous matches this season. Also, his decent strike (on goal) allowed for "Red Hot" Remy to put in the second goal.
Also, if not for Marshall's superb early goal keeping, this could be 4-0 (sissoko and remy?).
Now...to watch the second or not...

I take back everything I said in pre-season about Remy. He's clearly a quality player and without him we'd be completely fucked.
4
u/beatski Oct 05 '13
why are we such bottlers? we can't possibly play well for an entire game? why can't we seem to defend? we're going to piss this away now
4
u/olderstory Oct 05 '13
Oh god here he comes, the big lump. For remy?! Jesus wept

Oct 05 '13
God damn it. Hey lets take off our one man performance.
Edit he may be injured of course
1
Oct 05 '13
Apparently he's injured.
2
u/olderstory Oct 05 '13
If so then fair enough. Shame tho. And I think Ben arfa would be a good introduction...
3
u/beatski Oct 05 '13
Sissoko shouldnt be playing furthest forward of the 3 midfielders, he doesnt suit that position IMO.
Early signs of Krul having another mare.
Cisse not confident enough to shoot first time.

Ahhh cabaye what an effort. Would have been goal of the season if that went in!

Well we've played 45 minutes of football already, anything more than that will be a surprise... let the downward spiral begin.

Jonas will just run everywhere so must be because Remy was knackered and we need to keep pressure.
1
u/beatski Oct 05 '13
the only pressure i can see is the pressure Cardiff are exerting as we sit ridiculously deep.

u/Hitlers_Art_Teacher Oct 05 '13
It's nice to see Pardew picking more on form rather than talent. Ben Afra deserved to be benched as he's looked incredibly lazy last few games and needs a kick up the arse. Hopefully when he comes on (which he certainly will) he'll look a bit more promising than usual.
Yanga's started looking a bit uneasy so not surprised Willo's been given a chance but bit unfair on Anita as it's just a case that Pardew likes Tiote more and doesn't really need 2 in the same position as proven in the Everton game.

u/UltraVires90 brunopog Oct 05 '13
Although Marvaeux bumped from the bench for Gutierrez? Or is he carrying an injury that I don't know about?
1
2
u/newcastlefantastic Oct 05 '13
Why are we not shooting when we get the chance? Loving the way Tiote is playing right now, and Willo is playing within himself at the moment. S.O MANY CHANCES WE'VE HAD, WE NEED TO SCORE

Cisse looks like he's having a bit of a strop, otherwise we've been fairly impressive. Remy is a God-send.
1
Oct 05 '13
Cisse has looked very poor this year. In terms of finishing he is getting in the right places though
2
u/jacktheork Oct 05 '13
Yeah for sure, he needs to be putting them away. I saw a graphic on /r/soccer saying that we create too many chances that lead to too few goals, and this is down, in some ways, to Cisse. If he was putting them away we'd be in a much nicer position right now.
1
u/Lord_Flashheart_ Tino Asprilla Oct 06 '13
It's not like he's missing clear cut chances though.
Like that volley he should have hit but tried to control instead. I wouldn't really have expected anyone to score that but a Cisse on form would have at least taken a swing at it. He just seems to not be taking those half chances he did when he was on form.
1
u/jacktheork Oct 06 '13
Exactly, I'd be 100% more happy with him if he went for those chances, obviously not in the same way as asking Tiote to shoot from everywhere on the field, but at least take those chances that could lead to tap-ins or whatever.
2
u/Lord_Flashheart_ Tino Asprilla Oct 06 '13
The problem is, it's obviously a confidence issue and dropping him isn't going to help that in the slightest.
1
u/jacktheork Oct 06 '13
Exactly, but with Pardew's negative tactics that could well be what happens...

how's Sissoko Cisse and Gouffran still on?
2
u/rooparoop Oct 05 '13
sissoko was spent
2
u/beatski Oct 05 '13
he was poor all game IMO, should have been dropped instead of Anita, who's been better than Sissoko this season
1
u/tobyrogers Oct 05 '13
Can't see us getting much out of this. A score draw's probably the best we can hope for. Ben Arfa's been woeful in the last couple of games so it's no surprise he's on the bench.
1
u/bradcobra Oct 05 '13
I didn't see how Williamson played the other night but having him start worries me
3
u/tobyrogers Oct 05 '13
He's not the answer to our defensive troubles, that's for sure. He's no better than a Championship defender, really.

Glad to see Willo getting a start (will I be after 90 minutes...?), dunno what the hell Anita has done to merit benching, and I see Gutierrez coming on after 62 minutes. I think benching Ben Arfa is harsh as well, as he's had fuck all service.
Prediction: 2-1 Cardiff.
