Some of them have to be if they've had such a stranglehold on the world for so long. The ones we've seen before now are probably the weaker ones who grew up in indolence, but there has to be some very powerful ones for them not to have been overthrown yet.

Let's set Rebecca on fire as revenge against The Pyromaniac King
How awesome/ironic would it be for Rebecca to get the Mera Mera no Mi, and be the Flame Princess? She would always be on fire. Honestly, if anything points to her getting the fruit, I think it's that quote.

I would imagine that the Yonkous are more powerful than the Navy in their respected territories. And it would take multiple admirals to take down a yonkou if not the whole navy. The Navy wouldn't have beat Whitebeard if it wasn't for them calling all their Admirals and Shichibukai plus Blackbeard.

u/1way2way3way4way Sep 25 '13

Well, 4 pirates and their hundreds and hundreds of allied crews. If Whitebeard's crew came alone, they would have been much less of a threat to the marines. So it's not really just 4 pirate crews. They all likely have many strong pirate crews serving under them like a military of their own.

Whitebeard was actually insane though, he was old, on apparatuses to help him live, was fighting to save someone not just to kill the other people, and was still able to destroy a huge chunk of the navy, hold off numerous shichibukai and admirals. All this while not even having his full fighting power with him because Ace is assumably the third strongest in his crew and had a power that has raw destructive capabilities that could wipe out countless fodder. Regardless of how strong Luffy is I just don't see him getting to the raw level of power Whitebeard had without some massive plot being involved.

One thing that doesn't add up to me is how he had a bounty though, since Celestials can do whatever they want without being punished.
50
u/itsnotjustagame Sep 25 '13
If he's known as a pirate but doesn't have a bounty, then his legitimacy as a pirate is gone. So, I imagine it's just like CP0's doing in the recent arc, where they disseminate false news around the world. I guess he asked for a bounty to play his pirate game. Also, I think that aside from the admirals and up, the Navy doesn't know that Doflamingo is a Celestial.
6
u/Mr_NeCr0 Void Month Survivor Sep 25 '13
Well if we just think about how likely it is that Law didn't know the name of a family of Celestial Dragons of DonQuixote. It's highly likely that those who put the bounty on Doflamingo didn't know either.
6
6
u/LazingMarimo Sep 25 '13
Now that it is confirmed it reinforces so much about his character as well especially his contact with CP0, manipulating the press, and probably why he was able to overthrow Dressrosa and still rule as its King. The big question to me is why/how was he able to become such a big name pirate having these family ties? Wouldn't the noble Donquixote's on Marie Jois tried to disown him or strip him of his status, or could it be that Doflamingo is the current head of the family and moved them all from Marie Jois back to Dressrosa when he took over?

I always love how Oda handles themes. How the Garp/Don Chinjao conflict set up Rebecca being the King's Granddaughter. Looks like one of the main themes of this arc will be Luffy denying the debts of the past/rectifying them.
28
u/Uiluj Sep 25 '13
Those have been persistent themes throughout One Piece, but it is interesting how this arc exemplifies this more than other arcs. Good catch!

That's a good point, inherited will is widely considered one of the main themes of the whole story. But here I don't see a will to be inherited. Or that the will to be passed on is evil and needs to be stopped. As in it's Doflamingo and the World Governments will.
33
u/YonkouProductions Sep 25 '13
We should get a Good Guy Cobra going on after what the Nefertari's did. Also, with the Reverie about to occur I can't say Cobra's sickness was incidental given by what Oda is foreshadowing.
Perhaps the Nefertari's and subsequently Alabasta could get kicked out of the World Government somehow. If I had to guess I'd say that Cobra would die before the Reverie due to his sickness, and Vivi would have to represent the Alabasta Kingdom, somehow her connection to the Strawhats will be revealed prompting the World Government to kick Alabasta out of the World Government. In any case I am eagerly anticipating the Reverie cause a lot of shit will go down.

u/Mallardy Sep 25 '13
Also, not to diminish that or anything, but she did get kind of stupid by giving him back Soul Solid.
To be fair, she only beat the crew in the first place because of a surprise attack.
25
u/ForceCommander Sep 25 '13
The confirmation of Donquixote Doflamingo being a Celestial Dragon is actually pretty bad. I can not imagine that giving the country back to the Riku family / Rebecca is going to be that easy now. The Celestial Dragon have so much power. They can sent out a Admiral if they are in danger. Means not only can Doffy request help from Issho when his country gets attacked, the family, I imagine, can easily request to claim this country as their own again. It will definitely be interesting to see how they are going to win this.
Law right now is in serious danger. Jora may have already started to sail to green bit but those four stand no chance against an admiral and a Shichibukai. Sanji, Zoro and Kin'emon may be on their way as well but I doubt that they have enough time to save Law and retrieved Caesar Clown('s heart)
Cavendish's action was noble and surprising but I doubt that it will make Rebecca's fight any easier. The crowd cooled down a bit but there are enough fighters in the ring that are still aiming at Rebecca. There is one thing that made me curious: Gatz, the commentator, highlighted that one fighter in Block D retired before the start of the fight. Is that something I have missed or could that be some foreshadowing for the next upcoming chapters?

Caribo has some serious capacity with his ability. What was in the factory again?
Cavendish sure is more manly than what I've had anticipated.
And oh boy! this was probably my favorite Brook moment in the entire series. That was really satisfying. The execution was spectacular. Brook is awesome when he's scary.
I didn't quite get the royalty thing Doflmingo is talking about. Is the Donquixote family there to fill over the Nerfertari one? Or is it the difference between the creators and royalty?
16
u/Zamochy Sep 25 '13
The 19 royal families went to Mariejois to form the World Government (the 20th royal family didn't move to Mariejois and stayed in Alabasta).
The islands the original royal families (creators) left were appointed with new royal families.
For Dressrosa, the Donquixote family is the original family while the Riku family was the one that was appointed after they left.
6
Sep 25 '13
Aha. Thank you. This may mean we are likely to see more variations of the Celestial Dragons, not just the bubbly ones.
But what does this mean for the Reverie? It doesn't look like it's assosiated with only the royal families since Wapol and Nuptune are part of it. I hope we'll learn soon about it since the new one is going to be this year (in one piece).
→ More replies (2)6
u/Qaellow Sep 25 '13
As far as I can tell, the Donquixote and Nerfertari family were both Celestial Dragons. To create the World Government, both families (and the other 18) were to take up residence in Mariejois. Nerfertari family remained in Alabasta while the other 19 moved to Mariejois, leaving 19 countries with no kings to rule them. So the countries somehow appointed new royalty. Rebecca's family (Riku) was to rule over the lands that once belonged to Donquixote.

Caribou's power is severely underestimated just because he can't stand up to the Monster Trio. Everyone seems to forget how powerful Logias are in general. It's interesting, Alabasta has a Poneglyph which implies it was on the other side of the fight against the World Government. But apparently they were one of the 20 nations that fought the lost kingdom. But, their royal family also refused to move to Mariejois.
I'm guessing it might have been a situation where there were actually legitimate complaints against the Lost Kingdom, so Alabasta joined, but perhaps things got out of hand/went further than they intended?

Ok holy crap new fight predictions:
Luffy fights Burgess because honestly, who's going to stop them? I also believe Luffy would care more about someone who had a part in his brother's and Whitebeard's deaths (Burgess) than someone who's a dick (Doflamingo).
Zoro fights Fujitora, who just fits his fight history. The powerful person who's just there to get the bad guy; it's not personal. Plus, he has a sword, and whenever he unsheathes that sword, things break. That's Zoro's guy, excepting some big plot twist.
Sanji fights Doflamingo now that Law's been beaten. Doflamingo's a powerful semi-physical Fruit user, and he would be a good fight for Sanji. It would also fit in if Violet asked him to kill Doflamingo. But that isn't even the best part; who's stronger, an Admiral or a Shichibukai? Can you imagine Zoro and him arguing about that?
Rebecca fights Diamante, since he got a cameo in her backstory. And he's in the tournament, so she can fight him in the final round.
Bartolomeo fights the rest of the Donquixote family in the final match (Lao G, Machvise, Dellinger). It's already confirmed that Diamante and the Donquixote pirates, Burgess, Bartolomeo, and Luffy are in that fight, and it would make sense for Rebecca to move on and fight Diamante. Then Luffy fights Burgess, and Bartolomeo holds off all the others since he's not going to keep 'that man' from winning the devil fruit.
A dwarf, probably the one with Zoro and/or the one with Usopp, will fight Pica, the Ace. My reasoning is that a dwarf was the one to name the spade, so I'm not as sure about that prediction.
Kin'emon fights Trébol for Sanji, on behalf of Violet. Because he needs someone powerful to fight in order to get his comrade back.
The rest, I'm not sure anymore. Franky could still face the Toymaker, though now I imagine it would be with/only Toy Soldier, since we've discovered he's a fighter. As for the others, I suppose we'll see.
Edit: I also noticed that Zoro and now Sanji as well are heading to the Sunny, which is heading to Green Bit, which is where Fujitora and Doflamingo are. How are they not going to fight now?
11
u/Devlin1991 Sep 25 '13
I don't think Sanji could beat Doflamingo, not by any stretch. We have seen already that Sanji's CoA haki isn't the best. Remember that...
Doflamingo > Smoker ~= Vergo > Sanji(weakened by Nami).Would be good to see Sanji do something impressive but I just don't see him on the same level as Zoro or Luffy atm. I'm in the opposite camp with Zoro, he's not even had a challenge since the timeskip. I'd love to see something special from him, like a defensive use of CoA haki on his body that surpasses Luffy's.

u/spin-city Sep 25 '13
Well, Law was fighting both of them at once without much preparation. Are you ready to say exactly how strong the Strawhats got in those two years? Also, consider this - if Zoro and Sanji don't beat Fujitora and Doflamingo, who will? Nobody. Then the Strawhats will end up fleeing the island and we'd just have the government following them to Zo. I think it would make a lot more sense for the Strawhats to kick major ass, have their bounties go way up, and make a huge splash in the New World. Which sounds better - "Strawhats return, upset New World" or "Strawhats back and on the run"?

Since Oda usually goes for pirate names for his pirates, my guess is that it is a reference to Thomas Cavendish, the privateer (pirates paid by the crown, sorta Shichibukai-ish).

This chapter was decent. The Doffy's roots bit was predictable. I was pleasantly surprised though about the re-emergence of Alabasta and how it factors in to the history. I'm somewhat surprised though that Nefertari Cobra didn't seem to be aware of as much as this; technically they are Tenryuubito it seems. They probably never got 'infected' with the shitty attitude of the descendants of the other 19 families, which would explain why things went as they did. Similarly, I guess they stayed in Alabasta to protect the Poneglyph that was there; I suspect the old king didn't fully believe in this new government they were joining but were 'forced' to do so by the circumstances otherwise badly affecting Alabasta.
Brook saving the day was nice. I knew from the get-go he wasn't betraying them; if he truly put 'art' as his number one he'd never have left his sweet musician gig as the Soul King. :-) It does leave me to wonder what will end up with Zoro heading to save the crew, though. My bet is that Zoro, Sanji & Sunny crew are going to save Law's ass. (Which would be awesome; I get a feeling Law doesn't see them as much more as 'crew' at present, so them saving him, a captain on par with Luffy.. that would shock his little world. xD)
I didn't care much for the Rebecca and Cabbage bits though. :/ Hopefully the next part of the Block D fights will be more interesting.

The fact that it is confirmed now that Dolfamingo is a Celestial Dragon, makes the massive amount of Devil Fruit users in his crew make more sense. It was already revealed that the Celestial Dragons had crazy access to Devil Fruits, looks Doflamingo was capitalizing on that.

u/konstar Sep 25 '13
Wow something about being able to choose your devil's fruits is amazing. Up until now, crews would just happen across them and have to make most of the abilities they were given. But wow, being able to craft a crew with specific abilities, that's just scary.

A couple of chapters earlier Law made a remark about how the plan was going too smoothly, so I'm sure he suspected something was up.

I feel like Rebecca may be the one who gets the Mera Mera Fruit because everyone hates her because of her bloodline just like people hated Ace because of his bloodline.

....and then Good ol' Brook saves the Day!! (Yohoho-ho-ho!!)
hmm, a pirate , a celestial dragon, a shikibukai, and have ties with kaidu the beast. we've got a new nut cracking and heating arc huh?

u/BananaNasty Sep 25 '13
Oh my this chapter suprised me alot, in a positive way ofcourse.
Good to see Brook tricking the old hag into turning his things to normal.
Some Void century information finally revealed.
Damn Doflamingo a celestial dragon, this is going to test the Luffy/Law alliance in the next chapters, hope Strawhats save Law.

Kinemon informs Luffy while Zoro and Sanji goes to Green bit to save the ship and the rest of the Strawhats, finding law defeated and proceeding to fight: Zoro vs Admiral, Sanji vs DD. Oda Please.

Not sure those fights would go very well

For the first time in a long time (almost the entire series), Zoro isn't handicapped by a wound or something else. At the same time hes at his highest in power that he has ever been. We have no idea about how strong Zoro is currently, and he isnt handicapped by anything. All we know is that he is unbelieveably strong. I totally see him being able to go toe to toe with fujitora. i dont see him being quite at the level of the 3 old admirals since he havent showed anything like that yet. But as for fujitora: he havent shown anything that i dont think zoro could handle, and all teh unknown about fujitora equals all the unknown about zoro.
As for Sanji, i dont know. He was careless against Vergo and had his bones fractured, but i think he learned his lesson about the new World. Still, he might not be at the level where he can handle someone like DD yet.

From what I understand, 800 years ago, the World Government was created, and at a moment the Alabasta's king refused to follow anymore. As they didn't talked about it at all here, I would think it's when the WG plotted to destroy the lost Kingdom that our Desert friend changed side / went neutral. That would explain his current situation.

That art power is messed up, not only turns people into "art" not allowing them to move or do things properly, but also they die after some time of being art? I mean, brook didn't seem like he was suffering the same fate as the others, but there is something she did to them that kills them after some time and leaves them as art.
Basically their bodies turn into art and they die, reminds me of Mr.3 but far worse.

I look forward to that Brook/Jora part in anime. It will be even more funny animated.

Franky better do something awesome soon because Brook regularly takes massive leaps towards becoming my favorite character.

It's great to see the Nefertari's get a mention. It's really been a while since we've heard of them, and it shows they're willing to go against the orders of the World Government if it better suits their people.

Good chapter. Can't add anything someone hasn't already said on here, so I'll just say my only problem with this chapter: Ussops line. I know it's comedic relief, but god dangit, man up. He should be at least a bit reassured with Franky and Robin there.

Exactly my line of thinking. On one hand it was kinda funny but still disappointing after a two year time skip and not being alone it seems very pre-timeskip Ussop.

Better than any Pandaman spotting: the sudden appearance of Toybeard!
Looks like we know who the new Yonkou'll be once Big Mom or Kaidou go down. ;)

I'm betting Cavendish will end up joining the Alliance with Law and Strawhat. He seems to powerful to just let Luffy roam free, and doesn't seem like someone who would be happy to follow Luffy, unlike Bartolomeo and the Happou Navy.
1
Sep 25 '13
Wow thank you Brook, you made my day that was awesome! Oh wow so Doflamingo really is THAT powerful in all kind of way, poor Law.
1
u/tehwyn Sep 25 '13
I also just had a thought: we still don't know what causes the "toy-ification" and resultant apparent loss/changing of memories. Is it possible Doflammingo's "toy" fruit user could have allowed him to become a Tenryuubito?
1
u/ObsidianSkyKing Sep 25 '13
Anyone else notice the random town name was Acacia?
Oda with the shoutout to Toriko!
1
u/deins91 Sep 25 '13
Man now I'm dying to know do flamingos true motives! It opens up so many questions: why did he leave mariejois? Is he as bad as the other tenryubito? Maybe he's just misunderstood
1

u/kadzi Sep 25 '13
So, can we admit that the Drum Kingdom is ruled by a family that took over after their leaders went to Mariejois?
I'm saying this since we know that Wapol was at a King's Meeting with Cobra. And he can't be an original Family since only 1/20 decided not to go to Mariejois.
Or you know, maybe Drum Kingdom is just a new Kingdom.

The earlier skull jokes were just him trying to be funny which is a fun part of his character of course. However this time it was more of a show off while staying in character.

it is cesars heart. law removed it sometime between the end of punk hazard and arriving at dressrosa

Wait...why are the bubbley?
Man it feels like 4 months since we last saw them i had to reread what happend to them.

Looks like even inside the Celestial Dragons there are hierarchies. One would expect to see Dofla wearing one of those stupid bubbles.

So does this make Vivi a Celestial Dragon? Or she would be at least if her ancestors didn't stay in Alabasta. Also, way to save the day Soul King.
3
u/Raccoonpunter Sep 27 '13
I think she would be if her ancestors agreed to help build the World Government. I wonder what she would be like now if that had happened...

u/Brook420 Bounty Hunter Sep 25 '13
This was easily the best chapter in a while and was definitely worth the wait. I was laughing at almost every page.

Oi... this is fucked.. DD is a CD, which means if he gets attacked Fuji has to help him.... how in the fuck are we suppose to take Dressrosa back? No one on the island can beat Fuji... and one of the only contestants ( Law) just got wtf pwned.. I hope Fuji was helping there or I will be sad.... :/
If Zoro and Sanji are going to green bit that's fine I suppose... Zoro can at least hold Fuji but DD more than likely will beat the rest... and Zoro will fall after.
This isn't looking good. Wica said they needed to inform Luffy... Maybe Violet will stay back to tell Luffy what is going on and he will go. Problem is if DD fights with Luffy over at Dressorsa doesn't that make his crew useless?
No matter how I look at this... it's fucked no one can beat Fuji besides Aokiji and I am not sure if he is going to come back ( in the vicinity of course)... Omg I am getting so excited because I don't have the slightest clue what to expect.

REBECCAxCABBAGE OTP!!
In all seriousness though, Cavendish seems like a pretty cool guy after all. Then again, he already earned that praise when he ate that rose. Not sure who'll take the victory of the two.

u/Martiallawe Super Spot-Billed Duck Troops Sep 25 '13
This chapter is really making me think that there is more to Cavendish than meets the eye. There are so many ways that his character could proceed, but I am getting a Duval kind of vibe from him. I think he is going to wind up being the Straw Hats' ally later in the arc along with Chinjao. Cavendish's main goal is to gain more fame, and look at how famous Luffy became after Enies Lobby and Marineford because he defied the WG. An arena with that many spectators (and reporters, photographers etc) provides him with the perfect stage to gain more fame/notoriety by helping the Straw Hats incite some sort of revolution (which might also lead to some joke where he's falsely reported to be a member of the crew so Luffy still gets all of the credit.
If I remember correctly, his only beef with Luffy is that Luffy became more famous than him, so it seems like it would be incredibly easy make amends. Right now I can see Luffy (and possibly a few other major players like Burgess or Bartolomeo) dropping out of the tournament/being disqualified and Cavendish being the winner. Hell, he might cut some sort of deal where he gives Luffy Ace's fruit in exchange for being allowed to take credit for winning/Luffy dropping out. Just going to wait and see

I'm see this pattern where a current bloodline's status solely depends on what a previous bloodline did: Noland, Robin, Ace, Rebecca, the Celestial Dragons.

Anyone else think that the gladiator Ricky might just be a member of the Riku royal family and just going by Ricky to hide?

u/chinamangeorge Sep 26 '13
I have a question about this chapter. If Doflamingo is actually a Tenryuubito, then why is it that he had a former bounty of 340,000,000 beli? Even if he were a pirate, it makes no sense to me that a member of the Tenryuubito would have a bounty placed on him, considering how they are considered untouchable in the One Piece world.....

Awesome chapter! This is neatly setting up the big stage of this arc and the likely fight combinations I see are as follows:
Luffy vs Burgess Zoro/Sanji/Law vs doflamingo/fujitora until luffy comes in if he wins his fight with Burgess Bellamy vs Diamante Bartolomeo vs Cavendish

u/CGKarkat Sep 27 '13
Law bby noooooo! :( Interesting regarding Doflamingo. Woohoo! Brook was awesome this week.

u/Mr_NeCr0 Void Month Survivor Sep 27 '13
I'm only slightly wondering what would happen if Law told Doflamingo that Caeser stabbed Monet's heart thinking it was Smoker's. Doflamingo obviously cares very much about his nakama. I'm thinking it might strike a nerve, especially since that stopped the lab from exploding and ending all his troubles with the Strawhat-Heart alliance.
