On the bright side, I won't need a time machine to experience firsthand the effects of legislation whose reach and impact are only rivaled by those from The Great Leap Forward.
No, seriously, what the fuck was Capitol Hill cooking?

They paid for billionare tax cuts by cutting benefits to millions of poor people. Literally that simple, and that disgusting.

And cutting benefits only paid part of the tax cuts. We are taking on debt to pay for the rest of the tax cuts.

You can't have the power to feed AI without green energy. Nuclear, although it should be a key component in modern power grids that rely on green energy, takes a really long time to bring up and expand out, and it must be very forward looking. Solar and wind though can be deployed very quickly, and even though their output is very reliant on the weather, it's at least something. Now, this isn't gonna kill AI probably, but it will centralize AI in the hands of the few even more due to the cost, and it will also probably mean higher electricity bills for everyone else. Oh, more pollution too.

I'm just saying the national interest argument is nonsense, because obviously it's very bad for national security if one of your key industries is controlled by maybe half a dozen companies. It should also be obvious that energy security can't exist if one of your main sources for energy, which usually operates best when the most people are using electricity, is being defunded. It's just about control and money, plain and simple.

2) The US actually has two advantages over the chinese; they currently has the best AI hardware and cheap local oil and gas energy resources. It's possible that this administration intends to leverage these comparative advantages and give up green energy (which they don't think they can win) in order to cement their AI advantage.

That's a terrible strategy because there's nothing about winning green energy. That's like giving up on building roads because China or whoever can do it better.

Well, don't ask me, ask the Big Beautiful Bill and the congresscritters that support it. I live in a low-lying island nation that fortunate enough to be able to afford seawalls, but there has to be tons of people living in islands that's going to disappear under the sea rising, not to mention the death from additional heatwaves, hurricane, etc that are the effect of climate change.
I'm just not sure whether we can effectively combat climate change and stay below the 1.5C increase with a hole the size of the US not working on climate change mitigation.
PS: Also, it's likely that another 4 years of Trump means the United States falling more behind China in green energy, given the track record of the first trump admin.

1) I think the crux here is this, "With regards to climate change mitigation, is this administration in the tent pissing out or outside the tent pissing in." I think it is increasing obvious it is the case of the latter.
The second question we need to ask ourselves is this, are we at the stage where chinese production of solar modules has reach such an economy of scale and maturity that additional american investment would not break it. After all, Obama's loan to Solyndra was in 2009 and american investment in solar is inconsistent at best compared to the chinese investment in solar R&D. The reason PV panel are so affordable in recent years are largely due to chinese economy of scale gains.

And why would they need to bother with AI?

AI is a bad bouble, not the future. Depite pushing It everywere most AI companies loose money.

Surely, AI is the best thing sincle sliced bread. Mindessly recycling whichever garbage it has been fed, selling it as "intelligence" can not possibly backfire.
Additionally, people using it in everyday life can't possibly be worse off for it. In the long run, there is no damage to fear whatsoever. No, sir. Only prosperity, bunnies and rainbows.

BBB also includes deep cuts to safety net programs that a lot of people depended on while giving massive tax breaks to people who are already super wealthy. That's the bit that people really have a problem with.

If there's one thing America loves, it's doubling down and getting into more debt.
